Nay deserves a medal. I wouldn’t want to be the pillion with you doing all that nasty single track.

So, change the pillion helmet to a helmet without a peek, so then the passenger can hold on to you, no helmet bumping. Been doing it for years, it helps a bit, love your channel. Cheers.

Sounds promising Mark! Looks like an AT might be heading your way... Hope it all goes well and you get to enjoy an awesome bike soon mate. Well done Nay for hanging off the back for a blast, I know it can be nerve wracking but you have a good bloke there who's putting your comfort and safety first...

Nee's bouncing off the seat can be corrwcteded with suspension rebound and compression adjustments 👍

Gidday guys , thank you so much for that i dont think ive ever seen a pillion passanger talk about how a bike feels , please do this to as many bikes as you can you should make it a special interest video because there are a lot of people out there that want to know about this topic .
And the way you guys are honest about everything makes it a winning combination, keep up the great work looking forward to the BMW gs 1200 pillion ride .
Bloody great video thank you so much .

Good review Mark, with the proper suspension set up for two people and a bit of gear, they are a great bike. My tiger 800 is also a great all round bike for two up and solo adventure riding. These bikes do everything quite well.

Yep as the guys said. A few suspension tweeks for two up will make a huge difference to the bouncy bouncy. My wife felt on one road trip she was being bounced off the seat cornering on a road ride. Few tweaks later same road no issues.. Turns out she's not a big fan of wheelies either 🙄

I think others have already said it but back shock has 35/37 clicks adjustment so play around with that for a passenger. Great bit of kit ! I have the DCT which brings it up another level but thats just my opinion ! Stay safe ...from Scotland !

Hi Mark and Nay, great stuff. As noted in other comments, adjustments to the rear compression/ rebound may go some way to reducing the 'bounce' effect for the pillion. Looking forward to new adventures on the AT. Ride safe, cheers.

The handling would of been even better if you had increased the rear preload to compensate for the passenger and added a good bit more damping on the rear shock to control the extra weight and therefore stop the over bounce.

Sounds promising with the addition of a topbox, especially one with a pillion pad on the front. Alternative wildcard, add an extra wheel and try a Ural sidecar rig :D They even make the 2WD models in a left-hand-tub configuration to suit our UK and your Aus markets as of I think 2020.

I tried a little green Lane riding but it didn’t end well with me falling off took a while to heal bike was fine but muddy needed a new mirror and handlebars but after that I decided I was too old and stiff to try off road again however the Africa Twin Dct makes a fantastic road bike and country Lane ride I managed to get the OEM luggage for half price from Newcastle Honda and I’m back loving my riding there fantastic two up nice reviews mate 👍👍🇬🇧

  • @murraycharters6102
    @murraycharters6102 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Mark, The problem with a top box is you tend to put a lot of stuff in it. The riding you prefer now is off road.
The AT is a heavy bike so if you drop it ( that is when not if ) you will find it very hard to pick up without taking the top box off. That is the reason I suggested a back rest for Nay instead of a top box.

I'm glad you are doing this,I'm in the same boat I currently have a Honda St1300 for 6yrs now & I recently purchased a 2014 660 Tenere 6mths ago, the Tenere is ok for some I'm finding it average unless I throw a couple of grand in for the suspension upgrade it be going up for sale soon . The ST is great bike for two up all day with a good range on fuel, but I love my outback dirt roads. I love the sound of the Africa twin. The T7 is out of my price range,I love the old Lc4 ktm 640 but would love a ride on the adventure spec 690. The Africa twin is already there ready to go !!!

It is surprising how many people don't set up the bike for what they are using it for, even simple things like setting up the brake/clutch levers for better ergonomics for the rider can make a big difference. What do most people do when they get into a car move the seat, adjust the wheel, and mirrors.

I purchased the Yamaha super tenere xt1200ze as a 2 up tourer over the Africa twin as it was better for the missus on the back.
Suspension adjustable on the fly, preload and damping.
Rear seat is flatter than the Africa twin.
Low center of gravity, (awesome 2 up with luggage through the Grampians)
As a side note, comes with the nice for touring gadgets, cruise and heated grips.
Easy for me to touch the ground both feet.
If i was looking for a 1 up tourer it would have been the Africa twin though.

Sorry to say Mark but Nay is not really into the bikes. She never wanted the Virago or Whiskey, she obviously doesn't like the dirt riding that much but will ride the postie when she has to. I think she rides the bikes for you not because she wants it. If you didn't like bikes she would not make the suggestion and that is what tells the truth. My girl friend is the same. My point is, the bike is for you so you should make the decision and even Nay said that. Even when you ride Harry you take it on the dirt regularly and it is just not made for that. The seals, the suspension, the frame is not made for working in dust and corrugations. The Africa Twin suits your needs much more than Harry. So sell Harry and sell Whisky and buy the AT, you and we know you want to. Besides, that bike sounds so good and selling the others will be so much easier to do knowing what you will be getting. Just do it!

Recently got a CRF300L Rally and my wife has been asking me to take her on rides on backroads and dinner dates. Been thinking about selling my car and getting at 2020+ AT Adventure Sports SE so we can have a bike that can take us on longer trips since she seems to like that more than overlanding. We can compromise with an ADV bike and stay at hotels or AIR BNBs.

Hi Mark, You may remember I had a Boulevard exactly the same as yours. I traded it in over three years ago on a VStrom 650 XT.
One of the main reasons I got rid of the Boulevard is no ABS and no Traction control. Believe me , when you need ABS YOU NEED IT.
The AT is a beautiful bike, both you and Nay will be much safer on the AT.
Could you put a back rest similar to the one on the Boulevard on the AT.
I also agree that adjustment to the rear shock will remove the " bounce".

So the boss has given you the nod Mark. Operation Africa Twin Purchase begins. As an owner my only advice is a 2020 and 2021 model are a better overall bike than the 2018 and come in Black Edition models. One thing I have noticed watching you is just how expensive everything is in Australia compared to here in the UK. I bought my 2020 with only 978 kms on the clock for £10,000 which would have been about 18,000 Aus Dollars. I see my purchase as a great deal but I see buying in Aus Dollars as expensive. Why is stuff so dear in Australia. You also noted previously about the Twin being expensive after a fall to fix. I have had some pretty tasty offs but with the impact bars around the bike all I have ever had to replace was a front fender and that was not a crash but my dog chasing a cat. All I can say Mark is if you do get one get 2018 or newer as there is a world of difference in all performance of the bikes as in the 2020 and 2021 models are a step up again. I am no Tony Bou but my Twin has had some serious off road and bar the fender its been routine service and new back pads chain and sprockets and thats it. Interesting vid as well good to see Nay out joining you and enjoying the experience.

Damn wives and their insistence on top boxes, even when nipping down the road. :-) Next step is to learn standing 2 up off-road, makes a huge difference, importance is learning to spoon together when doing so, we've found if misses places one hand under your arm against your chest and the other on top of your shoulder she has lots more support and control. Suspension set-up is also important.

Cool, does the AT come with dynamic shocks? On the GS I can dial in single rider, single rider with luggage, pillion and pillion with luggage, makes the world of difference to the ride. Still, height of the pillion can be an issue (for the pillion) particularly in wind. Nay might miss that big screen on Harry.

Curious to know how tall she is? my wife's 5'8"-5'9" and cant stand a ride longer than about 45 minutes on my Yamaha Bolt R spec because the foot pegs have her knees above her hips. You're lady looks pretty stretched out and comfy on this bike!

Might have to sell Harry off to make room in the garage for the AT.

This is something ive done a bit of. Pillion shouldnt bounce. You are overwhelming the shock. Add rebound damping at least when you have a pillion. Also a top box with a pad is needed.

As I understand it, pillion refers to the seat, not the person sitting in it.

I think that bike is perfect for your long dirt roads but if I was going out to have some fun in the gnarly bits I definitely wouldn't have a pillion.
Just like me, you'll do anything you can to make your wife comfortable and happy.
On a different subject I noticed your road positioning on the twisties, I've been taking the same lines for 40 years.
Recently I watched a video with the British police and they took a different line to what we take.
They basically said "Keep away from the centre line, especially on the blind bends, because if some dick comes in too hot from the opposite direction, you're toast".
I've now started to take the same lines as the police, it definitely takes a lot of thought, but have a look at this video and see the difference.
