I am 60 years old, owned 45 motorcycles, ride 30-40,000 miles every year for over 40 years, the 2018 Honda Africa Twin DCT is by far the best all around motorcycle I have ever owned
I've had mine since 2018. Its a 2016, bought with 4k miles on it. Its feb of 2023 and has 95k miles currently and has barely missed a beat. Some fork issues (known problem, swapped in ATAS fork bodies to solve) and a misfire due to clogged air filter (fixed). Other than that, its used for trail, touring and daily rider. Best bike ever, ill never willingly sell her.
It’s a fantastic machine, Mark. I got mine new in 2016 and I’m still in the honeymoon phase. I ride off-road on technical trails and blast down the highway. It’s also my daily driver. It does it all. If/when you get one- enjoy ☺️
Mark! Get one (for those big long trips). It's the way to go! Fit your Wolfman Dry bag on the rear rack (temporary back rest for Nay). Gotta keep Max! 👍😁
The CRF1000 is absolutely fantastic value for money compared to ANY other ADV platform - Tuaregs and T7s are all at premium prices. That exhaust sounds awesome. Reliability is no worry whatsoever. Massive luxurious load carrying mile muncher which can do sketchy terrain if you're really keen and able. Great bike.
I think back to one of my favourite videos - Coober Pedy: The Hard Way. How perfect would this be? It can do everything that Harry can and more, plus for what it's worth it will be a great addition to the channel and should help attract more people!
A mate of mine got an Africa Twin & loved it, he asked if I wanted a go & I asked if it came with a ladder he’s over 6 foot & I am 5’ 6” on a good day, it’s a BIG bike, too big for a short arse like me😊
Thanks for the great review. I too have a DR -never sell it! I'm looking at getting an Africa Twin with DCT. Really appreciate your comments. Chers from Sydney.
I have decided to sell my 2017 KTM 1090R and buy a 2018 AT. I do NOT like all the complicated electronics on the newer bikes and living in remote Colorado, USA there seems to be an infinite number of beautiful paved roads and off-road trails to keep a rider exploring for 3 lifetimes. Great video,. thanks for sharing!
Hi Mark I'm from Port Elizabeth South Africa and I've had my Africa Twin since 2016 and absolutely love everything about the bike. I've fitted my Old BMW GS 800 top box which has a padded back rest and my wife sits back and almost falls asleep on long freeway rides. If you want I can send you some pics. Very easy to put on and remove from the bike. Sold my old DR650 and never looked back.. love your vids and been following your channel for many years now. Thanks for the great content.
Mark I'm with you mate, that's one sexy looking bike. I think one parked in my shed would be great. Great video as always. Keep up the good work mate...
I can tell you’re smitten. Sell the cruiser, buy the AT. Perfect for those long outback rides with Nay like the run to Coober Pedy you did. ATB Jason 👍
I agree Mark the ATs do look great, the one down fall that they have is lower fuel capacity and shorter range. One of my mate had one on our ride from Bourks to Bourketown, he was only getting 240ish km fully loaded, he had 2 fuel bladders and was fueling up everytime we stopped. Just something to consider. Great Vid.
Sounds like you're already on the verge of pulling the trigger mate, go for it! AT would easily replace the cruiser and be a way more versatile machine 👌 Good vid mate
Great Vid Mark, you couldn’t take the smile off your face. The AT fantastic bike for those longer tours single or two up with a Givi Top Box with back rest, like Pete’s and mine. It will be interesting what you think of the big GS1200 /1250 more like the Harry cruiser feel but the the adventure and remember the offer of you test riding my GS850 Adventure Rallye is still available any time mate for full comparison between the AT,T7 and Beemer’s. HWY Hal
Interesting Mark. I bought the 2018 AT Adventure Sport and love it. But, now have a DR in my garage and selling the AT. Awesome bike and it will be sad to see it go but its all about the DR for me!!!
Well you've done it now. No going back it's time my friend to change and get one. You know you wanna lol. I must admit when I first got my AT, it felt daunting when I first sat on it feeling really big. But once I twisted the throttle and lifted my feet it all went away. Love mine. Shame you can't keep it just a little longer enjoying watching you enjoying. Keep on keeping on.
Dont worry, the AT has an all black model for every year in its production. All Africa twins sold in Australia come with a center stand from factory. If it came without one, the dealer fkd up. Its a great machine that is well balanced and once rolling even at walking pace, the weight isn't an issue. As long as ypu can pick it up after a tip over its very capable offroad. Ive had mine for almost 2 years and I'm still smiling after every ride!
G,day Mark, like the look of the wood burner stove, problem with the little ones is you have to feed twigs constantly and they go out really quick as you don't get a good fire bed, think the bigger one is going to be a winner.
Mate I've had my twin since 2016 and over 70,000 ks so far, and have had a few off's on it and never broken a thing. I did have a DR650 before this and regret selling it. So I'm in the market for another DR, but definitely keeping my A'Twin for a while yet.. you won't regret buying one.. and if you're going to do a lot of two"up riding, maybe look at getting a DCT Twin. My wife has one and it's really smooth with two people on it.. food for thought..
That exhaust sounds awesome. I may have a new favourite pipe to look into. Oh... and if you pull the traction control lever and hold it, it will turn it off completely.
I have had them all, AT, KTM, T7 and a Dr650, just a warning if you ride 2up on the GS1250 you will buy one I did they are expensive but worth every cent.
My dream bike !! Africa twin has always been king of the road !!! I had the old 750cc early nineties ! It was a beast and went round Europe no worries 👍
I own an AT and I love it. It's black and red with a splash of white - beautiful. The exhaust note on yours is much like mine although mine is stock so the sound is excellent either way. If you have a choice buy one - you'll be very happy. Simon
Hello Mark, yes its a fantastic bike, when moving it, your right hand would be on the rear passenger handle so you have a better grip; Remember my Triumph Tiger 900GT You rode it and you loved it and it comes in black...LOL....The choice is yours.....keep safe....
Honda know how to engineer a bike mate , that thing's a beast and that exhaust note , what's not to like . If it makes you smile it must be good for you. Cheers 👍
Great review Mark ... I can't see you regretting the Honda after your first 5hrs in the saddle on an outback adventure ... if you choose to purchase one.😉
I’ll never sell my DR but sold my R250GS because of size and electronics overload I’ve just bought a 2019 Africa Twin so very excited. Thought it would compliment the DR brilliantly. Thanks for you videos really enjoy them. Cheers. Ps did you buy one?
I have a 2020 DCT Mark and it broke my heart exchanging my Triumph Tiger but the fuel costs were way to high. Boy am I glad I did. Absolutely love the bike and it is a Black edition with Gold wheels to. I then had a go on a friends Triumph GT Pro a 2020 model where he informed me it now has the MPG fixed with a much better range and lowered centre of gravity I went out and bought a 2021 which is even better and as someone already said also comes in Black. After twice being ripped of by BMW I will never advocate that brand but I never advocate any brand. If the bike is good enough for the everyday man then get one. Any brand. The Africa Twin and Tiger 900 GT Pro are both more than capable bikes and adverts for how far bikes have come in the last five years. Most important for me though Mark is since I have owned these bikes my nagging back issues of many years have disappeared so I am going to love them anyway. Great vid Mark. Oh I use the Twin for Adventure and the Pro for Touring.
Now that is a jump cut. Having a back rest, that is just how she got used to riding as a pillion, that feeling of being locked in... but unless you are doing something stupid the pillion doesn't go anywhere, but putting a bag back there gives them the same feeling as the rest. The Twin... can do the hard stuff just as well as the DR, you just got to get out of the showroom mode and just use it like it was built for. Knew a few 5foot nothings that rode 1200GS's, used to mount them like a horse, if coming to a stop rest arm on a tree, or do the dismount and roll and leg over to get going.
Have to say I've also been lucky to have test rides on two africa twins, the standard an the big one with the huge fuel tank. Both awesome bikes an so much poke I'd love to be able to own one. Although i prefer the DCT version. For me a game changer.
Nice bike , got me wanting to go bigger as light trail riding and hauling camp gear but lots of hwy miles to get to these places is where this bike would shine🤗 My KLR gets me there but yah it just gets me there😂
Cool video Mark, I have been looking at T700 a lot and I may get one. Like you I won't get rid of my DR650 I would sell all of my other bikes before getting rid of it. I think both the Yamaha and Honda have great features, maybe you could do a side by side comparison video? I do believe the T700 is a bit lighter than the Africa Twin, But both are very capable bikes. I have feeling Harry may be moving on.
G`Day Mark, as a previous comment, the AT has a wide following so may bring a lot more views and subscribers to your channel, just hope Nay likes the pillion riding position, it is a bit high compared to Harry.
Hey Mark, great review on the Africa Twin, I borrowed one a few years ago, great bike, but I think I would rather go for the Tenere 700. You should spend a few days on the Tenere and do a back to back, see what ya think. Both are brilliant bikes though, cheers mate... 🤘👍👍😎
great video my dude. if you had to pick between this or the suzuki v-strom 1150, which one (for your moneys worth) would you go for? thanks for the sweet ride along mate, and i'll see you in the next one.
loved your review but honestly mate, i dont think you have ever seen a bike you didnt love. Try out the a.t.'s little brother, cb 500 x. Its the one bike you have never mentioned.
Soooo....I owned a 17 AT and while it definitely was a fun machine...it really wasn't the end all be all. It does have plenty of power and it rode smoothly for the most part but like most bikes it would benefit greatly from some suspension upgrades. Mine just wasn't all that nice off highway. She's a beast to be sure as well. I also didn't like how the seat kinda sloped forward pushing my man package into the tank......a bit uncomfortable. After owning one for 3 years I can honestly say I wouldn't have another....
Turning the traction control up to mid level it will compensate for any over energetic use of the throttle and makes the bike so much easier to ride. Using a high gear off road on the AT too, it will reduce the loss of traction and make the engine run a lot smoother at low speed.
Awesome, you sound smitten. Soo selling Harry? Looking forward to seeing you ride the GS. I agree Honda looks better however i reckon the bmw will be nicer to ride!
I’m with you mark, absolutely love the look of it 👍 and it sounds awesome with that end can on it 😁 ………..if it puts a massive smile on your face……then why not, if you can afford it go for it 👍 you’re only here once 😉😁
Hi Mark, I've been looking around at several bikes from the Dr650, suzuki v strom 1000 and the honda africe twin possibly the DCT model. I know you enjoyed the africa twin, but since then you have ridden few other bikes. Out of the 3 bikes i mentioned i have leant towards the africa twin, in your opinion how does the africa twin stack up compared to the other bike you have tested? I love your videos keep up the great work.
I love the look too! But the price puts me off a bit, I too have the dr650 not worried about minor falls and damage, I would be to afraid to drop it...but still 1000cc hahaha that would be nice
What’s the problem with the AT ? Not many … but the switchgear is shite and there is no cruise control. Apart from that, they are a trusted alternative to the GS albeit a bit down on power!
Honda always wins on presentation. Graphics, lines plastics all perfect. So much better than the plain black or grey Matt finish garbage that is inflicted on us. Enjoy your new A T.
Take the puppy home, here's some food, keep him over the weekend, and if you want to bring him back Monday, we'll take him right back........enjoy your weekend. He he he.
My father has a 2018 africa twin adventure sports with the dct and I own a 2007 heavily modified dr650 and he leaves me in the dust on the road. I leave him in the dust on the trails lol.
If the T7 was around when I bought my AT I would have seriously looked at it. Stay Japanese! The BMW is fine but it's a different animal for a different rider. You've got your head screwed on right Mark, the bike is big and heavy so some riding adjustment is necessary but as you found out, once moving it feels like that KX80 you shoved into the tree in your backyard!
Always had a soft spot for the AT, fantastic looking machine! I'd have one quick smart if I was allowed two bikes (ahem, I mean , if I DECIDED to have two bikes, *mutter, mutter*). Couldn't part with the DR, can't beat the reliability, versatility and fun factor (and lighter weight)!
I am 60 years old, owned 45 motorcycles, ride 30-40,000 miles every year for over 40 years, the 2018 Honda Africa Twin DCT is by far the best all around motorcycle I have ever owned

Me same with 2005.ktm 950adventure.
Sold only because had to. Most people keep her for life, prices are insane for almost 20yo bike
Mark, I’m torn between loving the looks or the beautiful exhaust note the most. Definitely the complete package in my book for long adventure tours!
It’s the best looking adv bike out there imo, especially in this colorway; it just looks mean, rugged and ready to take on anything
Great bike.
You can get top boxes that have padding on the front for the pillion to rest back against. Givi are one example.
I think back to one of my favourite videos - Coober Pedy: The Hard Way. How perfect would this be? It can do everything that Harry can and more, plus for what it's worth it will be a great addition to the channel and should help attract more people!

Just bought a 2016 AT can't wait for it to arrive.great video as always.👍
Great vid, Mark. Just sell all the others and buy one mate. You know you want too..
Loved the review. I can se you looking online for one right now.
Thanks for the great review. I too have a DR -never sell it! I'm looking at getting an Africa Twin with DCT. Really appreciate your comments. Chers from Sydney.

Lovely looking bike, you see quite a few couriers up in London riding them, which speaks volumes about its reliability.
Mate I've had my twin since 2016 and over 70,000 ks so far, and have had a few off's on it and never broken a thing. I did have a DR650 before this and regret selling it. That’s why I bought my AT, because I do two up touring and the extra suspension travel is awesome.
Great review Mark ... I can't see you regretting the Honda after your first 5hrs in the saddle on an outback adventure ... if you choose to purchase one.😉
I’ll never sell my DR but sold my R250GS because of size and electronics overload

Africa Twin! 👍
Nice bike👍👍👍
Damn that’s a killer sound out of that exhaust.
I love mine on road and off road 2 up it does a great job
Awesome bike Mark!
Try the DCT version I have the 2017 model in black I love it..Great video subbed n liked
145kph naughty mark
loved your review but honestly mate, i dont think you have ever seen a bike you didnt love. Try out the a.t.'s little brother, cb 500 x. Its the one bike you have never mentioned.
So true! Yeah that would be a good bike to try! 👍
I like bike. I hope Na likes it as much as you do.

I love your videos keep up the great work.
G'day Rodney, yeah it always comes down to personal preference, but for me the Africa Twin wins!
@@BikerBits
Thank you Mark.
Thanks for the video!!
I love the look too! But the price puts me off a bit, I too have the dr650 not worried about minor falls and damage, I would be to afraid to drop it...but still 1000cc hahaha that would be nice
Hi! What tires do you use for travel? Which tires are best for you off-road?
Dunlop D606
Mark, I believe Honda are reviving the Transalp which will be an 850cc.
What’s the problem with the AT ? Not many … but the switchgear is shite and there is no cruise control.
Apart from that, they are a trusted alternative to the GS albeit a bit down on power!
Mark, that thing sounds ##cking sweet!
Buy it Mark, YOLO!
He he he.
In AUS 🇦🇺 what's the options price for the African twin vs tha pan america?
Not sure but it would be way cheaper I think!
@@BikerBits in the USA there both about 17k equally optioned. About the same as a gs1200
My father has a 2018 africa twin adventure sports with the dct and I own a 2007 heavily modified dr650 and he leaves me in the dust on the road. I leave him in the dust on the trails lol.
So do you like this better than the Tenere 700 ??
Yes for the use I want! T700 better in other ways though👍
have you test rode a T7 Mark?, ive got a dr650 but wanna update to a Twin or a T 7
ok just seen the T7 vid ....do a head to head
Will be doing a proper review of the T700 when Pete gets out of Lock down!👍
Get it Mark, it's only money and you only get one ticket to life.
I bloody am getting one Cheers 😅
If the T7 was around when I bought my AT I would have seriously looked at it. Stay Japanese! The BMW is fine but it's a different animal for a different rider. They are not really in the same class but would choose the Africa Twin unless I was replacing MAX the DR650. Then I would choose the T700
Looks like Mat is not getting the AT back.
Pleasant to the Eye, Sweet sound to the Ear, Japanese, Plenty of snot, Comfy, It's ticking boxes.
Yep that's for sure! 👍
Next Video: Mark sells all his bikes and buys an Africa Twin…..
Im 5.6 and i need to lower it 1.5inch
Great vid mate now I have to go get her in the bush 👍
Always had a soft spot for the AT, fantastic looking machine! I'd have one quick smart if I was allowed two bikes (ahem, I mean , if I DECIDED to have two bikes, *mutter, mutter*). Couldn't part with the DR, can't beat the reliability, versatility and fun factor (and lighter weight)!
that sound tho omg
