  • I'd couldn't leave Harris without doing this, it just wouldn't be right. So let's finish our time on the island in style. Enjoy the video :)
If you haven't seen my previous videos on Lewis and Harris be sure to check them out!
Filmed on Wednesday 1st May 2024

This video is not sponsored and all opinions are my own
I don’t pretend to be a travel expert, but I love what I do and would be honoured if you came along with me. My channel focusses on the wide-eyed wonder and excitement of finding somewhere new, and my genuine reaction to it. You may not get a history lesson in my videos, but who knows, you might pick up some useful travel tips along the way, add a few destinations to your bucket list and hopefully be entertained by what you see. Thanks for watching, it means a lot to me :)
I do ALL of this myself. Planning, filming, editing, promoting, all with a weekly upload schedule, so please understand not every video will be an epic adventure. But my pledge is to always do my best in any situation and KEEP THE CAMERA ROLLING :)

    FAQs:
    WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was born in Glasgow but have lived in Carnoustie, Dalgety Bay, Stonehaven, Edinburgh, Montrose, and further afield (Salamanca, Spain & Devonport, New Zealand)
    WHEN DO YOU UPLOAD?
Saturdays at 10am Scottish time. Occasionally a bonus midweek video will pop up (in which case, likely to be Tuesday at 5pm)
WHY IS THERE A DELAY BETWEEN TRIP AND VIDEO APPEARING?
This is both my business model and a result of doing everything myself. Editing takes time and I also like to schedule videos a bit in advance in case of any problems/illness/cancellations etc. Keeping my uploads appearing every Saturday is important to me, so I don’t want anything to get in the way of it. Also, I occasionally need some time off to recover from trips! But more than anything else, it's about budgets. I generally need to film a number of videos on each trip to break even. And each one of these take a while to fall into place on a Saturday morning.
    WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
I film with a GoPro11 and my iPhone12. I edit on iMovie and use epidemicsound.com for music. I also use canva.com for thumbnails etc. I also have a DJI Pocket 3 (bigger sensor) for nighttime, although I’m still getting to grips with it.
WHY DON'T YOU SPEND LONGER AT DESTINATIONS?
The usual suspects I'm afraid - time and money! Hotel prices especially these days make my eyes water like a true Scotsman. Also my weekly upload schedule means I need to keep on the move.
    WHERE'S ALICJA?
Alicja will feature whenever possible, but she has her own life and a proper job so it can take a while for our schedules to match up. Trust me though, I prefer it when She is there too!
DO YOU PAY FOR YOUR OWN TRAVEL?
Yes I do. I've only ever accepted a complementary ticket as compensation for a previous problem. All my opinions are frank and honest reflections of travel as I experience it.
    WHY THE ADS?
It's my income, I can't do this for free. Notice I don’t have mid-roll ads though!
    CAN I CONTACT YOU?
I used to list my email address but felt bad not having the capacity to respond to everything so took it down (and I got a LOT of spam so missed many genuine messages along the way).
HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE CHANNEL?
Watching my videos is of course support enough, but if you'd like to support further, I'll pop links in here for Paypal and Patreon. All kind donations are super-appreciated and will go 100% towards future filming trips.
    DO YOU ACCEPT SPONSORSHIPS?
I don't like to upset the flow of my videos, so I don't even include mid-roll ads anymore (at significant loss of income to myself), so I prefer not to include sponsorships either. I'm open to a small slide at the start/end of each video, but I don't want to get into talking about products, it's something I don't like as a viewer myself (especially as a viewer who pays for TH-cam Premium). So it's probably a polite no, although all of this goes out the window if you offer me something which can give me the chance to make a video for my audience that would otherwise be impossible.

I (a german lass😊) have travelled all around the world. And although the Hawaiian Beaches i've seen where nice, nothing can compare to Luskentyre. That has been the most stunning and beautiful beach i've ever been. I did a trip some years ago from Barra (whith loganair landing on the beach) to the Uists and then to Harris and Lewis. What can I say? I was there with you: in the car looking over the dash, the driving noises on different road surfaces, the sun in my face, the sand under my feet, the birds singing, the smell of the Tweed, the gentle waves around my ankles. It always feels like you are talking to ME, I forget about the other thousands of fellow viewers. By the way: what are you planning to celebrate the next milestone? At 30k you wore a kilt and looked smashing. Dancing a reel? Playing the bagpipe? Tossing the caber? Maybe at 200k, gives you time for training 😅

@@mf19856 You didn't look very hard then - Lews Castle in Stornoway is surrounded by them, and there are plantations by the main road south to Harris, as well as at various other, more remote locations. I think you may find that the wind and (in South Harris) absence of topsoil does actually frustrate such cultivated - or even natural growth: there are many places the money could be better spent and with much greater results. But you don't have to like it, and if noise and pollution of every sort is your thing - then you''re spoilt for choice elsewhere, I'm sure!

That was a wonderful trip and so well filmed and produced. Harris looks unbeatable in that sunshine. The landscape and beaches are so beautiful, I would love to visit again. When I was there in the 70s and 80s I remember seeing small piles of Harris tweed by the roadside outside the crofts. It was awaiting collection and left out in all weathers, I suppose a drenching of rain would do no harm. I never did see it being woven, thanks for showing that.
As an Englishman there is nowhere I would be than the Highlands and Islands so thanks for showing them at their very best.

Thanks for another great Video Steve. And for those people watching, I just have to add one thing. As Steve has said before a camera or video cannot possibly capture the truly awe-inspiring beauty of the colour of the beaches, the sea and the size of the mountains besides them. So many beaches on South Harris have views which cannot be described. You HAVE to experience them to understand. There's a small coffee shop/cafe near the southerly point of Harris where you can sit outside at the end of a loch ( if I remember correctly) with mountains rising out from both sides of the loch. It truly is heaven on earth!

Great video Steve! It took me back to my young days in 1984 when I toured Lewis and Harris on public transport. Took the train to Inverness, the bus to Ullapool, the ferry to Stornoway, buses around Lewis and Harris then the ferry to Uig, the bus to Kyleakin, the ferry to Kyle and the train back from there. It was a great trip. I remember being on the bus coming from Callanish and the driver flagged down the Tarbert bus so I could get off, run across the road and get on - out in the wilds somewhere near Leurbost. Took a bit of planning in those days - no google maps, internet or mobiles - just timetables, paper maps and a 'Freedom of Scotland' travel pass. Enjoy your Harris Whisky 🥃 Cheers! 😊

Loved that Steve. You may be right, Harris is probably the most beautiful island, but you’ve not done Arran, Islay & Jura or Mull yet…
Great to see you go to the Harris Distillery. The Hearach whisky is the main reason the distillery is there, but you you have to let the spirit mature for years and so a lot of distilleries have turned to gin and vodka to generate cashflow and establish their brand. The Harris gin though is the absolute best. Harris distillery is not the first one in the Hebrides. Abhainn Dearg has been going for about 15 years on the west side of Lewis. Barra will start making whisky shortly too and there is likely to be a new one in the Uists.

There aren’t many YT videos that get the ‘full screen’ treatment, but yours are always an exception. Just brilliant 😊

My mum’s cousin was Harris Tweed weaver in Stornoway in the1950’s, 60’s, 70’s + He was featured on a lot of the promotional material of the time, as they had started using more colour for the new designers of the late 60’s and 70’s.

Favourite beach? It's a coin flip between Eagle Beach on Aruba or Queen's Beach on Berneray. Took a trip with my parents back in 2022 and we did (among other things) Dunvegan and Berneray... and ended up having to take the ferry to Harris to drive to Stornoway to take the ferry back to the mainland. It was the week that two of the Calmac ferries went out of service.

What fantastic views of Harris…the beach and its approach road reminded me of Western Ireland (the Links beach) wow!!!
I have always loved Scotland (in my heritage) and its rugged landscapes but had no idea of how beautiful Lewis and Harris were…a trip for next year perhaps.
Thank you Steve for a wonderful virtual trip !

Luskentyre is also my favourite beach and I spent an August bank holiday on it having a picnic and I shared it with friends and another couple walking their dog. If it was on the mainland or in the Med it would be spoiled. You were probably there at the right time before the midge made an appearance. You did have some great weather and a very calm crossing although that crossing is a lot calmer than the Ullapool route generally.
