There's a LOT to See on The Isle of Lewis. How Much of it Can I Get Round in a Single Day?

- After my video from Harris, I continue the journey north into Lewis to have a look at the rest of this fantastic island. Again it was a bit of a last-minute trip after another St Kilda cancellation, so don't watch this for an expert tour! But it'd be great if you came along for the ride :) Enjoy the video.

I don’t pretend to be a travel expert, but I love what I do and would be honoured if you came along with me. My channel focusses on the wide-eyed wonder and excitement of finding somewhere new, and my genuine reaction to it. You may not get a history lesson in my videos, but who knows, you might pick up some useful travel tips along the way, add a few destinations to your bucket list and hopefully be entertained by what you see. Thanks for watching, it means a lot to me :)
I do ALL of this myself. Planning, filming, editing, promoting, all with a weekly upload schedule, so please understand not every video will be an epic adventure. But my pledge is to always do my best in any situation and KEEP THE CAMERA ROLLING :)

FAQs:
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was born in Glasgow but have lived in Carnoustie, Dalgety Bay, Stonehaven, Edinburgh, Montrose, and further afield (Salamanca, Spain & Devonport, New Zealand)
WHEN DO YOU UPLOAD?
Saturdays at 10am Scottish time. Occasionally a bonus midweek video will pop up (in which case, likely to be Tuesday at 5pm)
WHY IS THERE A DELAY BETWEEN TRIP AND VIDEO APPEARING?
This is both my business model and a result of doing everything myself. Editing takes time and I also like to schedule videos a bit in advance in case of any problems/illness/cancellations etc. Keeping my uploads appearing every Saturday is important to me, so I don’t want anything to get in the way of it. Also, I occasionally need some time off to recover from trips! But more than anything else, it's about budgets. I generally need to film a number of videos on each trip to break even. And each one of these take a while to fall into place on a Saturday morning.
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
I film with a GoPro11 and my iPhone12. I edit on iMovie and use epidemicsound.com for music. I also use canva.com for thumbnails etc. I also have a DJI Pocket 3 (bigger sensor) for nighttime, although I’m still getting to grips with it.
WHY DON'T YOU SPEND LONGER AT DESTINATIONS?
The usual suspects I'm afraid - time and money! Hotel prices especially these days make my eyes water like a true Scotsman. Also my weekly upload schedule means I need to keep on the move.
WHERE'S ALICJA?
Alicja will feature whenever possible, but she has her own life and a proper job so it can take a while for our schedules to match up. Trust me though, I prefer it when She is there too!
DO YOU PAY FOR YOUR OWN TRAVEL?
Yes I do. I've only ever accepted a complementary ticket as compensation for a previous problem. All my opinions are frank and honest reflections of travel as I experience it.
WHY THE ADS?
It's my income, I can't do this for free. Notice I don’t have mid-roll ads though!
CAN I CONTACT YOU?
I used to list my email address but felt bad not having the capacity to respond to everything so took it down (and I got a LOT of spam so missed many genuine messages along the way).
HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE CHANNEL?
Watching my videos is of course support enough, but if you'd like to support further, I'll pop links in here for Paypal and Patreon. All kind donations are super-appreciated and will go 100% towards future filming trips.
DO YOU ACCEPT SPONSORSHIPS?
I don't like to upset the flow of my videos, so I don't even include mid-roll ads anymore (at significant loss of income to myself), so I prefer not to include sponsorships either. I'm open to a small slide at the start/end of each video, but I don't want to get into talking about products, it's something I don't like as a viewer myself (especially as a viewer who pays for TH-cam Premium). So it's probably a polite no, although all of this goes out the window if you offer me something which can give me the chance to make a video for my audience that would otherwise be impossible.

In 1266 king Magnus of Norway made a peace treaty at Perth with the king of Scotland, king Magnus 'gave' or more properly 'rented out' the Sudreyjar (Hebrides) and Mannin (Isle of Man) to the Scottish king for a yearly rent, Even if the Sottish king stopped paying the 'rent' after a few years, a breach of contract, nobody in Norway bothered to take it back. King Magnus was much critsized for this by his contemporaries, I think I will claim the islands back to Norway next year.
Even worse was that the king of Norway, who was also king of Denmark, let his daughter in 1469 take Hjaltland (Shetland) and Orkneyjar(Orkneys) as collateral for the dowry he should pay when she was married to the king of Scotland....he never paid those barrels of silver, and in 1590 the islands became part of Scotland, keeping their Norwegian laws (which are still valid, with the odelslov (Udal law) which makes it difficult to sell land out of the family. And that they own the land outright, like in Norway, not the English and Scottish 99 year, or 999 year leases that were introduced by some other Norwegians, but mixed with French; the Normans
Thanks for sharing!
I love "traveling" with you as you share places that I will most likely never be able to visit. I learn so much from your content. Thank you for continuing to explore.
Steve, what I love most about these videos is your editing style. No crazy effects or anything like that, just nice and laid back. It's brilliant! Great video
I like that and no hysterical looking thumbnails to promote his videos, either. I just stumbled across this channel but it's one of my favorite ones now.
And the audio recording is first rate too. Very clever to record the sound of your footsteps so vividly, it really conveys a sense of travel!
💯
And no background music,,, hooray.
Fantastic video! I was born on the Isle of Lewis. Left when i was 12. Re-ignited a lot of happy memories.
I am always fascinated by the way people lived at the high latitudes. As a retired sailor, I always look at the empty bays when the tide is out. Great way to see parts of the world you never see on BBC or National Geographic. Thanks for sharing your travels.
The small enclosures mentioned were a primitive shelter from the heavy rains used by shepherd's. Great video.
Stayed in the Royal Hotel in Stornoway, and the kind lady at the bus station made up an itinerary of the bus times and where to get off and see all the sights and places to see in Lewis, and I did most of it in one day, and the bus drivers were so informative as well. great place, hope you enjoyed it but you missed several places to stop and see. All the Best Steve.
Fascinating bringing back memories of our visit, it was lovely. One thing that struck me about Lewis and Harris is how everything closes on a Sunday, nothing at all open and people wave to be friendly. The rest of the UK should take a leaf out of their book. I would love to move up there.
Hi Steve, was lucky enough to visit Lewis and Harris in 2022; great memories but I was there in November. Bit cold and wet but amazing. Monument to Iolanthe sinking was very emotional
Steve, I am disabled having had my left leg amputated and had a stroke. I love watching your videos when I can but I would appreciate it if you did one or two about disabled ♿ travelling, especially for someone in a wheelchair. What is access like in trains, ships and planes.
Here too I went for my first weekend away since my cancer journey started but I've been in a wheelchair for 14 years now but I invested my step dad's inheritance buying a Batec ( electric bike attachment) to my mannual wheelchair so I can ride over grass and sand and uneven rural roads or uneven ground - it was great when I went to Cornwall 2 years ago and this weekend "rock the lakes" at tattishaw lakes musicfest with my two grandsons aged 4 and hubby Aaron who is a massive fan of you Steve as well as I am of you both. My all terrain wheelchair can't do everything but makes a huge difference than a normal chair. A company
Called cyclone make then to attach to your wheelchair or like me I bought ak 2nd hand one and suitable lightweight wheelchair to go with it and it's opened up my world everyone says it looks cool which is rare when your using disabled aids lol. Great film can't wait for the next one - so much want to go to Scotland once we saved up for touring caravan to take the grandkids away on half term and summer holiday xxx god bless you all Kylie, Aaron and Levi Sidney xx in west Norfolk near Wisbech
Bus shelters that don’t blow away in a storm
Amazing that you can walk amongst the stones!!!
Stayed a week in Lewis in 2005 after seeing the Stones in Glasgow. Amazing B&Bs, A few great pubs w music, and the food in Stornaway was superb. More old history than you could find almost anywhere else.. And the smell of Peat permeated the island. Almost moved there
And we ate at that Chippie shop twice
Reminds me of Orkney which you have done.the best holiday I’ve had .great to watch thanks Steve
26:56 have a dowse next visit. You'll be amazed at the energy and movement of the rods as you walk around the stones. Standing in the centre, rods vibrate. Not a circle, but one big cross 🤗. Lewis and Harris are amazing.
Hope you get to St Kilda. I took the trip from Uig on Skye. Yeah, had it deferred by two days re the weather, but hey ho, camping there for the week allowed loads of room for Skye's wonders also.
St Kilda...?...do the camping stay over! Wish I did!
X
Another great video of beautiful Scotland and I love your commentary. Thanks, Steve.
Wonderful video of a very remote spot. I'd love to visit there one day - so much of Scotland I haven't seen. As always very relaxed, informative presentation.
Making me feel a little homesick with all these vlogs ma man. Not for Lewis or Harris, I’m not from there, but just in general. All the vlogs of recent (Inverness pub crawl) have been delightful. I don’t know when you’ll run out of places to visit in Scotland, but I’ll be watching for sure until then. Keep up the amazing work. Love the footnotes at the end as well, a really nice touch.
Love this one! I know I'll watch it many times.
Thank you Steve! Watching on a lazy Sunday morning and this was a great tour. See you when you return to Seattle!
Another gorgeous video Steve. Who needs sunshine you have it all there on your doorstep in Scotland.
We were in the Hebrides just a few days after Steve. We took our camper van from Vatersay all the way to the lighthouse up at the butt. Most tourist sites were busy. The stones were very busy. The black houses were way too busy. Luckily the Norse Mill & Kiln was quiet. We visited several nice beaches (all with their own grave yards). Great to see Steve's adventures.
Absolutely beautiful scenes once again. Your a lucky man mate 🏴🏴🏴
Wow the tip of Lewis is beautiful and the sounds of the ocean sounds amazing. I could see myself living on the island….another beautiful journey ❤️🤗
The off roader Range Rover not daring to go off the road 😄. Super video Steve as always. You always capture the essence of every place you go to, especially weather conditions. Super camera work and editing.
Yet another cracking video. I can’t thank you enough for taking me to all the best places.
Another place to add to my imaginary bucket list. Great video. Thanks for the trip.❤❤
A beautiful area, for sure. Thanks for doing all the driving, so I could enjoy the scenery. 😆 Cheers, and ATB!
Fantastic video as always... Thanks Steve 👍
Awesome Steve, another good yin. Really impressed by the Calanais Standing Stones. Has me imagining druids, magic and summer solstice offerings 🧚♂️🧞♂️like your fish n chips. No seriously, great video about a wonderful place.
I've really enjoyed these videos as they bring back memories from visitng a couple of years ago - a stunningly beautiful place and one I hope to return to soon! With the exception of the most southern reaches of Harris, I was surprised just how great the roads around Lewis and Harris are with hardly any potholes. This was in stark contrast to what we experienced on Mull earlier this year, those single track roads will destroy anything that's not a heavy duty 4x4.
Gorgeous, thank you so much for sharing this with us😊
You are right, the windy wet weather made the places you visited all the more epic. Another wonderful video, thanks for taking us along.
Thank you once again for taking us with you Steve on your trip to Lewis & Harris... which gives us a better idea what Lewis & Harris are like up close & that time of year is perfect to avoid Hoards of Midgies & Hoards of Visitors & Tourists.
My wife & I had planned on a trip back home to Scotland early May & June as we have been away way to long.
I had been waiting ages for surgery on my Right Foot & weren't expecting the Surgeon getting OR time for months yet because of Doctor shortages so 5 weeks ago I had metal rods & pins inserted in the foot & this Friday the 4th cast comes off & the medical boots going on & June 24th Surgery for a Left Total Shoulder Replacement & if it's anything like the Right Shoulder its a long recovery & hopefully we will be good for next year.
Thanks again
Yet again another great video and the stone structures are shelter from the weather 🤓👍
An island I long to visit. A friend just came back from there but he was attacked by midgies & ticks!! I think you must have gone at the right time of year Steve. Callanish stones are on my bucket list. I SO love your island videos, can't wait for the next.
Great video.
Stunning place and great scenery.
Bus shelters are what they are, depending on what direction the wind is coming from, you can always get shelter
Aye and you need them in Lewis in winter the rain comes at you horizontally in force .
Island full great history steve. Loved stones also cocunut jam lol😊
What a fantastic trip around Lewis - thanks for taking us. I want to visit now!
Thanks for this Steve. Brought back great memories of the few days I spent in Lewis. A bit dodgy passing cars on the narrow roads, but good travelling on near empty roads. Good vlog, showing Lewis at its best! 😊 👍
🤩great as always, thank you and many greetings from Austria
I was there about 7 years ago on holiday. We went to the lighthouse and the weather was fine but the wind was strong, apparently its one of the windiest place in the UK. It certainly was when i was there, another great video.
Nature Ay ! wonderful. Stunning. beautiful
I am from northern Germany. I just love this guy. Especially the „wee(s)“.
Good video lovely views, and waters are so clear, so interesting, and thank you for sharing, 😊
I was on Lewis, briefly, many years ago. I ended up seeing the Dun Carloway Broch and the Callanish Standing Stones. I'm overdue a visit.
Steve ... just wanted to say 'Thank you' for the travel videos from the Isle of Lewis (Harris next !).
You have brought me right to the Butt of Lewis Lighthouse & wonderful scenery & commentary !
Outer Hebrides brought right to me.
Bernie McMahon in Minnesota USA
Thank you👍🏻cheers 🍻
An absolute pleasure Bernie! Thanks for coming along with me!
Stunning scenery Steve, Lewis & Harris have some spectacular views. Thanks for sharing them with us. 👍.
Your videos haven't been showing for me lately, loved this one! The broch reminded me of 'Highlander' the movie...there can be only one! Awesome video!
I've always wanted to do a video on Highlander location
Thanks for a great video! I agree the clouds make the picture perfect…
Another great lighthouse! I'm glad you visited it before the weather turned. You're certainly brave to get so close to the edges of the cliffs, but your efforts certainly pay off in scenic vistas. The whole of Lewis looks like backdrops for Shetland episodes. And the standing stones......Did you feel as thought you were at Craigh na Dun? I was worried when you began to touch the stones! Another outstanding video, and thank you kindly!
Thank you! Another interesting video!🙂so enjoyable!!
We did a similar trip last year, the memories ❤ Have to say, if you go back: don't miss out on the haunting memorial to the Iolaire - so many lives lost so close to the shore 😢
I love the honesty shop. Most where I am from are selling home grown produce/ vegetables and berries. Thanks for taking us to Lewis.
Excellent video yet again, Steve. I think I could happily live on Lewis. Hmmm, do Waitrose deliver, I wonder? 🙃
We live just a couple of miles down the road from there and we've never actually beeen to this sheiling. Now I know how it looks like inside!
I enjoyed it once again, thank you Steve , from me in Irvine 😊😊
Me and my family have driven from Glasgow to Ullapool. And then to get the ferry to stornoway. It was a very long drive but was well worth the journey. Me and my family went to the calanais stones. I would go again but I would fly. That A9 was a scary road for me. I only passed my driving test 9 months before. Anyway Steve love the videos.
I highly recommend going via Glencoe, Fort William and then the ferry at Uig on Skye as it’s a far nicer road up. The ferry takes less time, but you’ll make up the difference with driving. You arrive at Tarbert and then can drive up to Lewis. I much prefer doing it that way when visiting family up there. Also means that you skip the dangerous A9 and see far more scenery.
This was so interesting Steve. My maiden name is Lewis (which I had long imagined had Welsh origins) and as I’ve delved further into my family history, I now think it’s likely that I have Scottish (maybe Lewis) ancestors.
Another great trip, thank you 🖐🇺🇸
We were going to do the St Kilda trip from Skye, but it was cancelled for the same reason. Then we went around to look at the boat we would have gone out on: it was *tiny* considering a North Atlantic trip. I'd been thinking it would be at least the size of a CalMac ferry, but no it was big enough to seat 12 sardines in the cabin, and not much space on the back to walk about. I'm *so* glad they cancelled it, because it would have been tossed about like flotsam.
Suilven is a personal favourite of mine, although it’s not quite a Munro. Last did it with a West Highland Terrier who loved Munro bagging. From where I parked up it’s a long trek across the moors before you started climbing.
wow, those stones and that fish!
While you Swifties are recovering from yesterday, we’re enjoying your latest video. We’re planning a Hebrides visit and attaching it to a return to Shetland. Interesting display on Scotland and Canada. My maternal great grandparents emigrated from Islay to Canada. They were teatotalers. Imagine that, from Islay. 😅 Have a great week!
Mine too! From Islay to a community near Collingwood, Ontario known as “McMurchy’s Settlement”.
Mine were in Toronto briefly but then settled in and around Erin.
Haha thanks! And you are spot on with the recovery! :)
In Canada the official home of the leader of the opposition is called Stornoway .
Every days a schoolday
And Canada’s first prime minister was a Scotsman... John A. Macdonald.
Thanks Steve, ideal timing for us as we’ll be there next week for a few days.
Great video again Steve. What i like about them is you make it feel like we're with you on this journey :) Here's to the next one !
Excellent and informative as always. I can see what you mean about the weather at the stone circle. The forest in Stornaway seems a big contrast to the rest of the island!
You never disappoint, Steve. What energy must come from those incredible stones.
Nice video. I love the broch. The dry stonework always fascinates me. I’ve been to Scara Brae in the Orkneys, same great stonework
I guess the shelters were against the weather, designed for whatever direction it was coming from. A great couple of videos Steve. Thank you.
Absolutely beautiful 🥰🤗💙👍🏻👋🏻💯😀👌😍🩵
This place is so, so beautiful. If I lived in Scotland, I would never leave. I love how you could buy the little cakes using the honor system. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Wow, those cliffs and that boat ramp carved into the rocks are fantastic!
Once again Steve, a great video to watch. Love the relaxed style. Thank you.
I watched this video before our trip to Lewis and now we’ve been there it’s nice to watch again to see things with more context.
Never did find that amazing honesty shop though Steve, that was a real gem of a find!
Another great video Steve
The structure on the skyline on the left at 0:50 is the memorial cairn to the Park Deer Raiders 1887, constructed in 1994 in case anyone is interested. And talking of Berneray which was mentioned in the previous video of Harris, I learnt this week that Fish, one time singer with Marillion, is now a resident there. I liked the forecasting stone at 24:19, though I've seen something like it before.
Steve, another amazing video, you have a skill doing these sir, so laid back and informative. So proud to call Scotland my home, and you bring these incredible scenes into my home every weekend, thank you so much.
Thank you for the tour! As always down to earth and relatable. A gracious guide.
My gran used to live on Galloway street in Springburn. She used to tell me that the stone buildings were used during the Blitz as bomb shelters. This was 65 years ago when I was 5. After that they were used as the middens for people in the tenements
Am I the third from Aus? Thank you, Steve, I’ve always wanted to visit Stornaway - and your tour didn’t disappoint 😊
If you are ever in Shetland again Steve take a trip to Mousa, the most complete and largest broch in Scotland. Excellent video, love honesty shops.
Very interesting and enjoyable video. Just discovered you and your adventure to the outer Hebrides. Thanks for the ride. I think I’ll subscribe. ;)
great video what a place to visit, lots more inhabitants than i thought bet it is a delight to live there
Watching in Thailand, looks wonderful
The island looks stunning - from pictures I've seen, seems to have a similar landscape to Iceland? Scotland is such a beautiful place.
Awesome video Steve
That war memorial is INCREDIBLE!!
Just came across your video, I have subscribed and enjoying your
Second video well done Steve
Great video ! Thanks !
Unlucky with the weather for the St Kilda trip Steve, it's one I'd love to do one day to see the highest cliffs in the UK. Not looking forward to the 4 hour trip out there and followed by the 4 hour trip back though 🤢 You did well in only 2 days on Harris and Lewis but next time you must go to the monument for the Lolaire disaster just outside Stornaway. From it you can see the rocks where the boat hit and the tragedy occurred. It's the saddest war story I've heard. I'd also recommend the Eagle viewing area which is on North Harris. As we arrived there were eagles above. Incredible ! When are you rescheduling for St KIlda?
That's not a bad introductory tour of Lewis, Steve, though outside of Stornoway, eating places are few and far between, indeed. Although the hotel had closed, there was a place at Ness last time I was there, plus a wee tearoom in one of those cottage art galleries, on the seaward side of the road a bit to the north of Barvas and - miles out to the west - there's quite a posh restaurant in a house where the locals go - but you'd probably never find it unless you knew where to look! I think had you gone to Garenin - the thatched village at the extreme western tip of Carloway, you might also have been able to get something there. But yes, the season is a good deal shorter than on the Scottish Mainland. I've a feeling there's also some kind of cafe in the community centre at Kershader - which is a couple of miles to the east of the main road towards Harris and (I think) a little to the south of Balealain, the only village as such that the road runs through; but I'd not like to have to say what the opening times might be...! For future reference, Lews Castle - which stands at the top of the hill and in the woodland at Stornoway, is a really good museum and visitor centre, with a cafe you can get absolutely super meals in - though it's not the cheapest, I'm afraid. There are also Chinese, Indian and Thai take-aways in the town - and another nice cafe in the restored mill buildings right by the shorehead. The big Co-op supermarket up by the roundabout has a decent tearoom too. You missed the fort that is just beyond the point you turned round, beyond the Butt of Lewis lighthouse - situated on top of one of those rocky islets just offshore and connected by a metal footbridge, which although potentially vertigo-inducing is short and pretty stable, meaning that you can fix your gaze ahead and cross over it quickly; I have! Also St Moluag's Chapel at Ness - which you access by walking down a narrow grassy footpath... Very much on the ancient monument side of things, it is still used occasionally by the Scottish Episcopal Church services. Incidentally, another of Lord Leverhulme's schemes that were aborted by the first world war was the development of Carloway as a deep-water fishing port and a railway connecting it to Stornoway... The proposed trackbed is now the almost dead-straight unclassified road between the two towns - and if you look closely at the bridge carrying the main road over this as it arrives in Carloway, you'll see that is in fact built very much like a railway overbridge... I am fortunate enough to know someone who lives just outside of Stornoway, hence I've been chauffeur driven around much of these islands!
Mate fantastic, thank you 👏
thankyou steve i really enjoyed your videos of these islands but for me i liked harris landscape the best. also i like lighthouses stripey but i gues the brickmone at the butt of lewis would be more durable with the weather not wearing paint off!!!!
Another first class video Steve. Will you be going sometime to the "wild and lonely Isle of Barra" where Private Frazer came from ?
Oh I MUST spend more time there soon!
I've been there to the standing stones at Callanish, the Broch, the Black Houses, Stornoway. If you'd visited Cnip you'd have seen the bluest sky, the most turquoise sea, and the white sand of a perfect beach by the campsite. Of course, 15 minutes later it could easily be grey & cloudy, then throwing hailstones at you, then a windy squall. But the sun will come out again afterwards. Lewis & Harris - great to see. Including the Chessmen.
Thanks for another great video. You really are getting good at this...
Brilliant. The very first thing we did when arriving in Stornoway was park on that street and climb up to the war memorial. We then also went up to see the bridge to nowhere, ending the day with the long drive up to the Butt of Lewis lighthouse, complete with those incredible views over to Assynt.
However, we did Carloway and Callanish on a different day, also including the drive along to the Mangersta Sea Stacks. There really is so much to see across Lewis/Harris.
Love Lewis! Have friends who live there. The Scottish Episcopal Church in Stornoway is marvelous…. Great people. Love St Moluag’s Church, up near the Lighthouse in the north of the island, even more.
The funny looking cement items are bus stops so that no matter which way the wind is blowing you are sheltered from the weather.
Tolsta has two amazing beaches. The whole islxnd has amazing beaches.
