I knew a woman who was going to America on the day of Sept 11 attacks. All the planes were diverted to the nearest airfield and hers along with many more landed at Newfoundland. She had nothing but praise for the people there who took them in their houses and looked after them. Like you, she said they were the friendliest people she had met.
Funny was crossing the Tower bridge in London the day a terrorist stabbed people on the neighboring bridge. They shut down the bridge and the subways (the tube) for several hours. When they finally opened it there were people diving on the top of full trains of bodies to get past the doors. I was stuck at some pub for quite a while, I refused to dive.
Every time my wife and I went hiking, we usually purchased hiking sticks and just donated them before we left town. Until the invented the 3 part collapsing ones we could stow in our carry-ons.
A 48 minute mid-week video, no wonder you're burning the midnight oil with the editing! Hiking videos that are this good are a rare thing on TH-cam, this one has made my day.
I worked at Cape Spear National Historic Site for six seasons while going to university. Quidi Vidi is pronounced "kiddy viddy." Many of the stairs and boardwalks, as well as some of the signage of The East Coast Trail have fallen into disrepair - donations to support its upkeep can be made at its official website. I love the barrens. My husband and I had our honeymoon in Newfoundland. Watching this makes us want to return, perhaps in a couple of years for our 10th anniversary. It is very rugged there. And we always miscalculated the time it would take for us to do a hike.

Wow! That was one tough hike. Well done to you both. What worried me was how slippery the trail got in places and it would be so easy to go over on your ankle and then you're in a world of trouble! When Alicja did the splits my heart was in my mouth because I thought she'd hurt herself for sure, but she's one tough cookie! Looking forward to your further adventures there. Still 5000km from our home on Vancouver Island but on the move all the same. We are on a 75 day trip that includes a couple of weeks in Ireland - Scotland searching family history... New Foundland is a gorgeous part of Canada. Coastline, forest, rocky cliffs, well maintained foot paths and trails. Groomed? No, but well labeled and looked after. What a wonderful trip. A little sunshine wouldn't hurt, but hey, you can't have everything! It is what I thought it would be. Coastlines tend to be rocky, windswept, and empty. Either that or forested, steep, and lonely.
That looked like a very challenging hike but worth doing, from my comfortable chair. The smells from the pine and sea must have been so refreshing. Well done to you both as usual.
That was some seriously spectacular scenery! And when you said in the video it wasn't the most scenic of the East Coast Trail it just blew my mind. Can't wait for the next video and fingers crossed you do manage a pub crawl because Canada has some great local breweries. 👍.

if youve never done it or anyone else coming to Newfoundland mistaken point is a must its a nice guided walk down to the oldest fossils in the world its a protected site so you cant go alone you have to book a tour guide but it is absolutely gorgeous
OMG ! I can’t believe you did that … I lived in St. John’s for 20 years, I would drive to Cape Spear, just for the drive. I know how long it takes. Steve, I’m a big fan of your channel and all your hiking/walking and pub videos. Your adventures with Alicja are fantastic and I’ve watched nearly all your hiking videos now. I live in upstate New York about hour from Niagara Falls, and really enjoyed this video very much. I especially like it when you say “We are broken.” As rotten as I feel after challenging hikes, I crave the satisfaction my broken body feels afterward. I suspect it’s the same for you. I haven't seen anything about Newfoundland for a while. There was a movie a few years back called the shipping new (I think) A bit of a dark story but a fascinating glimpse of NL. It doesn't look as if it has changed a lot since then. NL only became part of Canada just after WW2 after it became bankrupt
Well done! The video was so real on the big TV screen that at one point I actually raised my arm to push a tree branch out of the way 😂 I loved hiking cross country so much and hope to be able to do it again soon. In the meantime, I sort of walk with you ❤

We spent our honeymoon in Newfoundland and did a weee bit of the East Coast Trail. Good on you both. I wonder which of us traveled furthest to St. John's - we came from Vancouver Island and you from Scotland. We're now based in Nova scotia and enjoying the East Coast lifestyle. Your video brought back some good memories of The Rock - thank you, might now need to plan a return trip

I lived in Newfoundland for 7 years. That landing looked normal. I once landed where we couldn’t see the ground until we were basically in it. St John’s airport has a special system to allow for fog landings.

I've done a lot of hiking in the mountains of BC and Alberta. That is the roughest trail I have ever seen! And Steve you need boots with better ankle support - none of us are getting any younger...

Great at adventure guys, very well done! Newfoundlanders and other Maritimers are very friendly and hospitable; elsewhere in Canada people are less so. The trail looks exhausting, I'm sure you were both done in at the end. Hope you had a good fish dinner that evening. Looking forward to the continuation in the next installment.
A couple of years ago, my closest friend phoned me, and asked, "Do you know where I am?" He was standing at Cape Spear. I had absolutely no idea the pathway was so rough. Somehow, I'd assumed it was just a nice flat walk, maybe a bit uphill or downhill, but absolutely nothing like this. I've shared this video with him to bring back memories. So beautiful - all the way. Even the treacherous bits.

We really enjoyed visiting Cape Spear and Newfoundland in mid June to mid July for a month in our USA based campervan. We saw icebergs at Twillingate and puffins at Elliston! Rose & Michael

Steve, I’m a big fan of your channel and all your hiking/walking and pub videos. Your adventures with Alicja are fantastic and I’ve watched nearly all your hiking videos now. I live in upstate New York about hour from Niagara Falls, and really enjoyed this video very much. I especially like it when you say “We are broken.” As rotten as I feel after challenging hikes, I crave the satisfaction my broken body feels afterward. I suspect it’s the same for you. Wishing you both the best and keep up the amazing work.

Thanks so much for the wonderful video much appreciated everything you say about our wonderful Country of Canada is true. I was born in London UK and immigrated here when I was 19. I now live just south of London, Ontario . All that to say keep up the good work and do visit Ontario in the future as we also have a lovely Province also .
I haven't seen anything about Newfoundland for a while. There was a movie a few years back called the shipping new (I think) A bit of a dark story but a fascinating glimpse of NL. It doesn't look as if it has changed a lot since then. NL only became part of Canada just after WW2 after it became bankrupt

Well done! The video was so real on the big TV screen that at one point I actually raised my arm to push a tree branch out of the way 😂 I loved hiking cross country so much and hope to be able to do it again soon. In the meantime, I sort of walk with you ❤
Amazing video. Wonderful scenery and a tough walk/climb, even moreso carrying a camera. Steve and Alicja complement each other so well in these vlogs...nice balance and humour. Quite an adventure to reach Easternmost point of Canada (North America minus Greenland).

We spent our honeymoon in Newfoundland and did a weee bit of the East Coast Trail. Good on you both. I wonder which of us traveled furthest to St. John's - we came from Vancouver Island and you from Scotland. We're now based in Nova scotia and enjoying the East Coast lifestyle. Your video brought back some good memories of The Rock - thank you, might now need to plan a return trip

Hey Steve, this was a real adventure. I was worn out just watching the two of you climb all those hills. Coming down the hills was even more nerve racking. Don't ever worry about showing those legs of yours, they are in great shape. One of the best trips you've made yet, thanks for sharing. Take care of those legs 🦵

I lived in Newfoundland for 7 years. That landing looked normal. I once landed where we couldn’t see the ground until we were basically in it. St John’s airport has a special system to allow for fog landings.

I can't imagine doing 40k+ steps in a single day. We did 20k in Scotland one day in our visit last year, and my dogs were barking. Impressive for both of you. Thanks for taking us along and I'm enjoying the trip.

I've done a lot of hiking in the mountains of BC and Alberta. That is the roughest trail I have ever seen! And Steve you need boots with better ankle support - none of us are getting any younger...

Great at adventure guys, very well done! Newfoundlanders and other Maritimers are very friendly and hospitable; elsewhere in Canada people are less so. The trail looks exhausting, I'm sure you were both done in at the end. Hope you had a good fish dinner that evening. Looking forward to the continuation in the next installment.

A couple of years ago, my closest friend phoned me, and asked, "Do you know where I am?" He was standing at Cape Spear. I had absolutely no idea the pathway was so rough. Somehow, I'd assumed it was just a nice flat walk, maybe a bit uphill or downhill, but absolutely nothing like this. I've shared this video with him to bring back memories. So beautiful - all the way. Even the treacherous bits.

The most easterly land in N America is Semisopochnoi Island in the Aleutian Islands. If you want an inhabited place it's Attu Station. Both in Alaska.

We really enjoyed visiting Cape Spear and Newfoundland in mid June to mid July for a month in our USA based campervan. We saw icebergs at Twillingate and puffins at Elliston!

Whenever you've mentioned Montrose it reminds me to say that I live just south of the community of Montrose, California. The name was chosen in 1912 in a naming contest by local residents. It won by a vote of 8! I was hoping for a better Scottish connection! 😄If you make it to Cali sometime, I'd like to see your video from Montrose!
