Jason Bateman was NOT FIRED from Silver Spoons, Derrick was supposed to spinoff into his own show but the producers realized to late that they didn't own the rights to the character so it was retooled as It's Your Move. IYM was then put up against Dynasty and couldn't break the top 50 shows and was cancelled. Not long after the same production team created Married... With Children on FOX. Trivia: in the first episode of IYM, River Phoenix is one of Matthews friends as he's plotting in his living room.
Yes I was hoping throughout this video that he would have mentioned that. I had heard that not only did they have trouble with ownership of the character but the creative team behind that would be spinoff (which was to have Derek and his mom moving to St Louis) they wound up selling their pilot for Small Wonder into first run syndication and scrapped the spinoff to go do that awful series
So many tv shows made this mistake. I remember it was either Bob Newhart or Jerry Seinfeld or perhaps both had said that they were okay being upstaged, as long as they had those viewers laughing.
Jason Bateman’s popularity was jeopardizing the integrity of the show specifically about a boy and his father. It was the right move to remove him. At least he got his own show. Silverspoon survived without Jason Bateman. Steve Urkel had to be the highlight of that show because the casting of the Winslow’s was mediocre at best and I don’t think they had enough star power to last more than two maybe three seasons at the most. That also was a good move to put Urkel in the forefront yet not getting away from the Winslow family dynamic.
You make some valid points! The dynamics of casting can really shape a show's direction, and Urkel definitely brought a unique energy that many fans loved.
I remember this, it wasn't a secret that Bateman was fired to appease Ricky Schroder, the central character. Big mistake. Plus, I do think Alfonso came on after Jason left, as a replacement. Too bad It's Your Move didn't find a home with the audience, but he found success in other tv shows and movies and still works today. I don't know about Ricky or Rick Schroder though. Also, the people that produced It's Your Move went on to create Married with Children.
I think the producers bet on the wrong horse. Bateman has had a long, successful career that is still going (his latest movie, Carry-On is set to be released next month and he has Zootopia 2 after that in post production, plus Black Rabbit, a new TV series in production). Rick Schroder, on the other hand, had his last movie released in 2010 and last TV appearance was a Dolly Parton Christmas movie in 2016. He seems to have spent his time since harassing Costco employees. Whatever the writers and produces wanted to do with Silver Spoons, it wanted to go in a different direction with Bateman. Our loss. Who knows what a classic it could have turned into.
You make some solid points! Bateman's career is definitely on fire, and it's interesting to think about how different things could have been with Silver Spoons. It’s always a gamble in Hollywood!
If only Little House had done this with the James and Cassandra characters nobody wanted and focused on the existing cast instead.....! Haha! He did well for himself without either one, though!

I really appreciate your knowledge on this topic! It’s amazing how much history these shows have behind them.
I loved him in the 1986 “ Valerie”.
Same. I thought that was a great show. I hated when Valerie left it.
It's called "The Fonzie Effect"... where what was supposed to be just a supporting character [surprisingly] becomes the "star" of the show.
Totally get what you mean! It’s wild how some side characters just blow up and become legends. Love when that happens!
They should have kept him. It would have pushed the ratings up.
I agree. He was by far my favorite character when the show was in it's initial run.

*At least he came back big time in Arrested Development now!* ⭐️
Absolutely! It's great to see him make such a strong comeback in Arrested Development. The show really thrives on its quirky characters!
They should have given him a spin-off or something. I loved Jason Bateman on Valerie / The Hogan Family when I was a kid.
I totally agree! Jason Bateman's charisma really shone in that role, and a spin-off would have been a fantastic way to see more of his talent.

Liberty Willam’s was on Chico and the man
Yep. Good memory
I remember Jason Bateman being an instant star. Instant! He overshadowed Blondie easily.
The best part about Silver Spoons was him I thought too.

Yeah I really liked 'It's Your Move'. It should have had a longer run.

I saw the thumbnail and thought you were sean Strickland, lol
Sean Strickland? Wow, I’ll take that as a compliment!
@Mugwumps-dh1si 👍

Haha, I know, right? The original crew had all the charm! Sometimes less is more, and those two just didn’t bring the vibe!
