Sorry, I picked Guide Vocal - Genesis, Paradise Lost - Symphony X, Sugar Mice - Marillion, Fish - Garden of Remembrance and my top choice is the Wait for Her/Oceans apart/Part of Me Died suite by Roger Waters; the absolute best song I know about unrequited love, melancholy and regret. The honorable mentions included A Long Day's Life - Kevin Gilbert, Second Love - Pain of Salvation, Believe - Savatage, Death Whispered a Lullaby - Opeth, Neverland - Marillion.
Good pick on 'Jon & Vangelis - I'll Find My Way Home'. I just watched it on TOTP 1982. As a kid I loved that song. I was very unique for the time. This is probably the first time I had hear anyone from Yes.
I'm glad "Kayleigh" by Marillion squeaked into Pete's honorable mentions -- I almost named my daughter after that song. (I was... overruled.) Both of the Kansas songs I would have named got mentioned, but I'll add one from the (mostly forgettable) John Elefante era: "Chasing Shadows." I'll also throw in a couple from Jethro Tull: "Slow Marching Band" and "Home." And, because they never get mentioned enough, "A Gift From God" by Magenta.
I'm exactly the opposite. I like Vinyl Confessions just fine -- it's not a great Kansas album, but it's decent enough and there are a few gems like "Chasing Shadows" on it. Conversely, there's nothing on Drastic Measures that I have any need to hear ever again. But as Mr. Pardo often says, we all hear these albums differently.
“Old and Wise” by the Alan Parsons Project, sung by the great Colin Blunstone - and for an instrumental, “To the Unknown Man” by Vangelis. Both heartbreakers for me. And does “A Salty Dog” qualify? You mentioned some of my favorites tonight: One Time, Turn of the Century, Funny Ways, I Talk to the Wind (I like the Judy Dyble version too). I love the live version of C’est La Vie that’s on In Concert and Works Live. As for Loreena McKennitt, I heard “All Souls Night” on the radio many years ago and was entranced by it, and bought her whole catalog. I once saw her live from the front row - I remember “The Bonny Swans” was the song where she gave her electric guitarist the chance to rock out. My favorite of her albums is The Book of Secrets. Thanks guys!
Old And Wise, Alan Parsons Project’ album, Eye In The Sky is one of my favourite songs and singles! Beautiful! Also ‘So long Ago, So Clear’ on Vangelis’ (RIP!), Heaven And Hell. ‘Nevermore’ on my favourite album of all time, Queen II!
In Too Deep- Genesis Your Own Special Way- Genesis Marooned- Pink Floyd Grantchester Meadows- Pink Floyd Lavender- Marillion Babe- Styx Dust in the Wind- Kansas Legend of a Mind- The Moody Blues
Rush-The Garden (probably their most beautiful and poignant song and what a way to say "goodbye"). It Bites-Ice melts into water. Opeth-Burden. Just thinkin' about those 3 makes me shiver! Cheers.
'One Summer Dream' by the partly prog E.L.O. I have always loved this song very much since I bought the FTM vinyl back in the day. On the pop side of E.L.O, 'Strange Magic' is also another song that I never get tired of hearing...
1)Which Way The Wind Blows - Anthony Phillips 2)Dont Give Up - Peter Gabriel 3)Panacea - Rush 4)Dust In The Wind - Kansas 5)Home - Jethro Tull 6)Babe - Styx 7)Happy Nightmare - Focus 8)Lend Your Love To Me Tonight - ELP 9)Dusk - Genesis 10)Dont Let It Show - Alan Parsons Project
Cannonball- Weather Report Dawn- Mahavishnu Orchestra Different Strings- Rush Epitaph- King Crimson Matte Kudasai- King Crimson Dust in the Wind- Kansas (will never get tired of this song) Entire Damnation album- Opeth And many others that I can’t think of right now.
I also saw Steve Hackett several weeks ago, in Carmel, Indiana. Played every song from the "Seconds Out" live album. Amazing show from start to finish. Didn't want it to end!!!!!
Elke by Camel Dusk by Genesis Yesterday and Today by Yes A Pillow Of Winds by Pink Floyd (featuring fretless bass by David Gilmour) Beautiful by Marillion Honorable Mentions: Do I Love You? by Annie Haslam You’ll Never Get To Heaven by It Bites Spider and I by Brian Eno For Absent Friends by Genesis Wallflower by Peter Gabriel Mother Of Violence by Peter Gabriel Voices In The Sky by The Moody Blues Watching and Waiting by The Moody Blues
You are, I'm delighted to say, so right Rocio! I should have said, that nothing says 'smoochy song' like Opeth! 😂😂 Thanks for taking it in the spirit it was intended! 🤘🤘
'Home' by Jethro Tull has always been a favourite of mine. Doesn't get mentioned very often, if at all, but it is just so beautiful and really conjures up feelings of nostalgia and sentimentality. When I hear the words 'Down steep and narrow lanes, I see the chimney smoking. Above the golden fields, know how the robin feels', my imagine takes me to those scenes.
Hello Greg, that's a good one (from Stormwatch, isn't it?) There's another Jethro Tull song that blew me away the other day - which is "And Further On" from the "A" album. I used to OWN the album but when it came up on TH-cam the other day I thought, "what is this, some kind of bonus track?". But it's not, it's the album closer and it's altogether brilliant.
@@kevinmcgauhey9813 Hi Kevin. I've still got the vinyl records of both of those albums. Stormwatch was my introduction to Jethro Tull, hence my affection for 'Home'. However, I really like a lot of the songs off that album. Even though I don't rate 'A' as highly, there are some standouts for me, like 'Black Sunday' and '4WD (Low Ratio)'. I'm guessing many hardcore JT fans probably find the latter song not typical of JT, but I always enjoyed listening to it and I still do....another one I absolutely love (not sure if you'd call it a softie) would be 'Slow Marching Band' off Broadsword and the Beast. Oh the list could go on, even if I just stay with the discography of JT.
@@greghansell5115 Stormwatch really is a good album, I will have to replace my long lost cassette of it. I agree that A is not as great, but I might have to replace that long lost cassette too, (YES! to Black Sunday but my other favorite track is WorkingJohn, Working Joe !) I was very unhappy with Broadsword initially but the MANY excellent reissue bonus tracks made me scarf it up.... and though it's worth getting JUST for those bonus tracks, now I am starting to like the whole thing.
My pick’s softy’s are 1 Genesis ripple’s 2 pink Floyd. Great gig in the sky 3 procol harum. Luskus delph 4. Steve Hackett. Hoping love will last Randy Crawford beautiful vocal gorgeous 5 Steve hillage palm trees love guitar from green.
Hey Ken, don't pay attention to the person who said you talk too much. First, this is a show where people TALK about music! If you have something to say, say it! That goes for everyone on the panel. I prefer a lively discussion instead of sighs and deafening silence. Second, you don't talk any more than anyone else. So, in short, forget the haters. Keep doing what you're doing. Thank you! See you next week😉
Thanks Kimberly. I find comments like his to be humorous. As long as I get some kind of reaction - good or bad I’m happy. I’m here to generate an exchange of knowledge and hopefully do it in an engaging way.
@@lasercd7851 I'm glad you see the humor in it. I just thought the comment was rather rude. But as they say, you must be doing something right if you get a reaction, particularly a bad one. I think the lot of you are entertaining even if I have no clue what you're talking about half the time. I've never heard a Yes album but, after listening to you guys, I know Drama is good and Heaven and Earth is the turd in the prog punch bowl. And The Final Cut is basically Roger Waters' complaints about war. Keep up the good work😉
Forget Soon (that's a cheat pick! ...and you absolutely cannot have it without the preceding 20 minutes), To Be Over is a gorgeous softie and a perfect ending to Relayer.
Chad’s choice of "Oh Life (There Must Be More)" by Alan Parson Project has David Pack on vocals. This whole album “Try Anything Once” maybe one of the most under appreciated APP albums. David Pack’s vocals on the Ambrosia albums was phenomenal, and easily many softy prog songs are on those. Of course APP essentially started with Ambrosia included.
Lover-Caravan. Nights in White Satin-The Moody Blues. Bedside Manners are Extra-Greenslade. Turn of the Century-Yes. Different Strings-Rush. The Book of Saturday-King Crimson.
A great subject and a great episode! So many mentioned in this episode are my favorites. Many of my favorite prog songs are "softies". Here are some of mine. Genesis - The Carpet Crawlers (I like all versions including the later remake) Genesis - Blood On The Rooftops (I am surprised this one was not mentioned). Van Der Graaf Generator - Refugees Pink Floyd - Cymbaline King Crimson - I Talk To The Wind Uriah Heep - Circus Strawbs - Starshine / Angel Wine (The first part is a "softie" and the second part is less so... a great combination). ...and there are so many by Marillion ...and The Moody Blues are a given of which I absolutely adore. EDIT. How could I forget... King Crimson - Islands (I really like the latest live version, oh so good!)
Yes! Finally some love for Loreena My top 5: 1.Marillion - Easter 2.Spock's Beard - Ghosts of Autumn 3.Loreena McKennitt - Penelope's Song 4.Yes - Time and a word 5.Dream Theater - The Spirit Carries on Hon. Mentions: Peter Gabriel - Mercy Street Opeth - Hope Leaves King Crimson - Epitaph Genesis - Afterglow Flying Colors - Peaceful Harbor Pink Floyd - Green is the Color Steve Hackett - Serpentine Song
I like Kate Bush's The Kick Inside album. Dave Gilmore produced it so it has a cool mellow Pink Floyd sound to it. ELP From the Beginning and King Crimson I Talk to the Wind are favorites too.
As someone who actually loves, or even prefers ballads and mellow, atmospheric tracks, I could never narrow this category down to only 5, but I'll give you five that came immediately to mind. I'm keeping it to one song per band, though, or the whole list could be just Moody Blues or Marillion with Hogarth... 1) The Moody Blues "Isn't Life Strange" 2) Marillion "Season's End" 3) Mystery "My Inspiration" 4) Barclay James Harvest "Nova Lepidoptra" 5) The Beatles "She's Leaving Home" (and yes, latter day Beatles were definitely prog)
I live in the same town in Ontario Canada as Loreena McKennitt. She's super nice and very talented.(...the same town which later spawned Justin Beiber...sorry.)
Van der Graaf Generator Refugees, Renaissance Black Flame, Comus The Herald, Gentle Giant Think of me with kindness, Family My friend the sun. Honourable mentions - Steve Hackett The Hermit, Anthony Phillips God if I saw her now, King Crimson Cadence and cascade.
In no particular order - Wishbone Ash - Persephone (There's The Rub) David Sylvian - Maria (Secrets Of The Beehive) Caravan - All The Way (Blind Dog At St. Dunstans Jon Anderson - Days (Song Of Seven) Cockney Rebel - Tumbling Down (Pschomodo) (pushing it with this one, maybe ?)
Hey Eric. I recorded a version of Matte Kudasai a few years back . Instrumental . I think it turned out quite well. Sax for the vocal and 2 bass guitars for the solo. I can easily send you a copy of the Cd. Not sure how to contact y tube celebrities. Let me know if you have any interest.
Great show! I was thinking about Renaissance, wondering if it would get a mention, sure enough but I had to wait for the very end. I think I would've mention some Italian prog, like "La carrozza di Hans" on the first PFM. Thanks everybody for those great listening ideas!
Wish you were here - Pink Floyd. One of the greatest songs ever written. Love of my life - Queen. Intimate and the vocal delivery is spellbinding. Untouchtable Parts I & II - Perhaps the most beautiful piece of music I've heard in the last decade. Blackbird - The Beatles. Perfect. Silent lucidity - Queensyche. Rych doing Floyd, what's not to like. Ship of fools - Robert Plant. lush...
Some of my favorites, in no order... - Washing of the Water - Peter Gabriel - Wond'ring Aloud - Jethro Tull - Sweetness - Yes - For Absent Friends - Genesis - Runnin' Away - Ambrosia - If Anything - IQ
A few of my favourites are - Nektar - it's all over Camel - summer lightning (with a great extended guitar solo) Pallas - something in the deep Barclay James Harvest - the song they love to sing Jethro Tull - and further on
Yes, Pallas are very underated and from your neck of the woods I believe, I saw them at Hammersmith on the Sentinel tour back in the day, great gig and very theatrical. Just listened to Runrig's live farewell album, was really impressed by the musicianship and some great songs, never listened to them before, also from your part of the world. Keep up the good work on the channel, I think you add a great dynamic with your extensive music knowledge and the way you articulate it. All the best Gary.
Great show guys. For what it's worth my 5 would be: IQ - Ocean (The Road of Bones) Anthony Phillips - God if I saw her now (The Geese and the Ghost) Peter Gabriel - Mercy Street (So) Vangelis/Jon Anderson - So Long Ago, So Clear (Heaven and Hell) Big Big Train - Endnotes (Common Ground)
Anthony Phillips - "God If I Saw Her Now". Phil Collins best vocals. Lovely song. The Incredible String Band - "First Girl I Loved" Matching Mole - "O Caroline"
The Incredible String Band - "A Very Cellular Song" May the long-time sun shine upon you All love surround you And the pure light within you Guide you all the way on
Hmmm...define 'softie' again. I wouldn't have had Epitaph as one but it is excellent. Genesis are possibly the kings of the prog softies - Ripples, Afterglow, Entangled, More Fool Me, even Your Own Special Way are all excellent. I'd also mention Floyd's Grantchester Meadows and any number of Peter Hammill's solo songs - let's just mention Ferret and Featherbird in particular.
I fear I might stray off into art rock, but let's call them 'prog by proxy' Robert Wyatt - "Sea Song" Peter Hammill - "Slender Threads" Be Bop Deluxe - "Night Creatures" Saga - "Time's Up" Renaissance - "Mother Russia"
I know I am stepping out of the prog genre a little here (or maybe not?) but I have always liked this song and I find it fascinating as they never really recorded anything else quite like this. On the surface its a unique ballad but there is something eerie and sinister beneath the surface, that I can’t quite put my finger on and it makes the song even more interesting. Iron Maiden- “Strange World” “A look at love, a dream unfolds Living here, you’ll never grow old.”
I'm another big fan of that song. With regard to your comment "they never really recorded anything else quite like this", I'm thinking maybe because it's from the early era Iron Maiden with Paul Di'anno. IMO, those first two albums are very different from what followed. I think they may have been a bit more prog-like back then...them maybe not...
5. "23/24/11" off The Living Tree, by Anderson/Wakeman (2010) 4. "Stuck in the August Rain" off Roots to Branches, by Jethro Tull (1995) 3. "Hygge" off The Depths of Winter, by Tiger Moth Tales (2017) 2. "Immortal Beloved" off Symphony of Light, by Renaissance (2014) 1. "Proper Jack Froster" off Welcome to the Planet, by Big Big Train (2022)
"Prelude - Song Of The Gulls" King Crimson "Afterglow" (Seconds out version) - Genesis "In My Time Of Need" - Opeth "Long Distance Runaround" (Acoustic version from QPR) - YES "Song Of the Seagoat" - Pete Sinfield
Nice show, thanks! These comes to my mind for now: - Kate Bush "Moments of Pleasure" (also "And Dream of Sheep" & "Mother Stands for Comfort") - Peter Gabriel "Wallflower" - Pink Floyd "If" - Queensryche "Killing Words" (MTV Unplugged version - amazing!) - Saga "Intermission" (what a great guitar solo by Ian Crichton!)
I dont get the 'this was boring' comments below , I found it to be a great and enagaging discussion between a group of interesting and very knowledgeable people, and as Sean said its the shade element of the light and shade/ hard and soft of the music we love to listen to. New Trolls - Secondo Tempo - Adagio (Shadows) from their Concerto Grosso - even thogh I only first heard it in the mid 2000's it evokes memories of the 70's when I was growing up. PFM - Dolcissima Maria form L'isola di Niente - the English version Just Look Away is metioned in the comments below but I tend to prefer their original Italian versions. Justin Hayward - Forever Autumn from Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds - another song that takes me right back to the late 70's when it was originally a hit. Barclay James Harvest - Galadriel from Once Again and Berlin from Xii - Galadriel mentioned below and though it was originally on Once Again I prefer the non orchestrated version they did as a BBC session. Berlin is just a total unadulterated classic - maybe Les Holroyds greatest moment. Jethro Tull - Home and Elegy form Stormwatch - both already mentioned in the comments but both just great soft songs from perhaps my favourite Tull album the melodies Ian and Dee Palmer wrote are just to die for. Honorable mentions - all the songs in the lists below and mentioned on the show that I have heard - there are a few that I havent which I'll need to check out.
Wow, I'm quite amazed that not one of my all time favourites was picked : 1. Curved Air : Melinda (More or Less) (from 'Phantasmagoria') 2. Pink Floyd : Julia Dream (Single B-Side) 3. Genesis : Dusk (from 'Trespass') 4. Van der Graaf Generator : Afterwards (from 'The Aerosol Grey Machine') 5. Le Orme : Gioco di Bimba (from 'Uomo di Pezza') Great pick by Ken with Loreena McKennitt - what a stunning voice! I got her complete catalogue on CD, but I'd rather put her in a Clannad Folk Rock corner than on the Prog Seat.
Mitch wrote Garden of Remembrance (Fish great lyrics). He is the absolute mastercraftsman of somber, sad emotional tunes. Listen to his Lonely Robot albums. The Last Escape on Map of the Past.
Another terrific outing, guys. Brilliant theme, too...could have been two shows, minimum! Outstanding picks, as aye...oh and welcome back to Chuck...missed those mellifluous tones! I know it got a fleeting mention, but I utterly love Book of Saturday by Crimson. Heard it when I was around 13, in 1972...how that impacted one so young, I know not...but it did...still does. My honorable mentions go to Anthony for Stay...a Floydian gem...and Steven for Tuesday Afternoon...a stone cold classic from the Moodies. In The Prog Seat...just goes from strength to strength... 👏👏👏
@@ericporter344 Pleasure, Eric. Great choice of Entangled, by the way. Saw Genesis play it live back in 1976 and then Steve on Genesis Revisited, couple of years or so, ago. Both, magnificent...
Fabulous segment ! Kudos to Ken for promoting The Strawbs and Loreena McKennitt ( 2 musical treasures ) , to Eric who continues to sing the praises of Camel ( finally heard some respect for their 1st album ), Kudos to Steven for steadfastly recognizing the genius of Steven Wilson and PT , and finally to both Steven and Louis ( first time I have ever agreed with Louis , in fact rarely have I heard most of the albums Louis likes ) for recognizing the masterpiece that is Fish's final album. Kudos to Pete for recommending Scheherazade 's Ocean Gypsy .Now a question for a man ( Ken ) who's opinion I have come to greatly to respect . I'm probably a bit older than all ( turn 70 in November ) . Do you have any positive feelings at all for a) Barclay James Harvest or b ) Bound For Infinity from Prologue by Renaissance ( Annie's first appearance ) or c) a little known or appreciated album by a King Crimson offshoot , entitled Mcdonald and Giles . I find a b and c to still all be stimulating after all these years . Enjoy your commentary each time I'm lucky enough to see SOT and especially find your knowledge of Krautrock to be top notch , although I've never heard you mention Tangerine Dream .
Kevin I like 70s BJH particularly Time Honored Ghosts and Once Again but I'm not a massive fan. Not sure they ever played in the US so maybe that had something to do with it. Love the Mellotron. Prologue was a solid album but I think a foreshadowing of better things to come. Was never a fan of the McDonald and Giles album. I bought it 45 years ago and couldn't get into it. Maybe If I revisit it now I'd have an appreciation for it. With respect to Tangerine Dream I was a fan all the way into the 90s. While Electronic Meditation and perhaps Alpha Centauri and Atem can be considered krautrock I wouldn't categorize them that way once they discovered synthesizers. We don't talk about the band much because I don't think too many of the other panelists are into them (I could be wrong).
Pete mentions Ocean Gypsy by Renaissance. To me, one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard is Carpet of the Sun, and the version I know is from Renaissance Live at Carnegie Hall.
Good show gents, my choices would be “Shadow of a Lonely Man” - Alan Parsons Project "Grantchester Meadows" - Pink Floyd "Fallen Dreams & Angels" - Pendragon "Winter Wine" - Caravan "Galadriel" Barclay James Harvest
Great show guys; to Ken Golden - thank you so much for mentioning Loreena McKennitt - a much beloved musician here in Canada. It brought to mind another artist, Eva Cassidy. Are you familiar with her rendition of Sting's 'Fields of Gold'? Unfortunately she passed away far too soon, but what a beautiful, "pure" voice that we all should hear. Thanks Ken.
Oh Kenny, you've no idea! Never mind the car troubles, but now they regularly close the M80 for roadworks after 10pm and create the vaguest of diversions! Always a not so magical mystery tour! I'll find my way home - sometimes about 3AM in the morning!! 😂😂
1- Herbie Hancock : Butterfly (the ultimate softie) 2- Happy The Man : At The Edge of This Thought 3- Genesis : Entangled 4- Jean-Luc Ponty : Nostalgic Lady 5- Rush : Losing It
In the End-Rush Ice-Camel Of a Lifetime-Journey (From their first album-very proggy) Can't get it out of my Head-ELO Soapbox Opera-Supertramp Late November-Pavlov's Dog
@@martinkulkarni3569 They probably don't qualify as prog, although they are pretty little softies. I was more thinking does the band qualify as a 'prog' band, generally speaking. I guess it's open to interpretation.

I'm glad "Kayleigh" by Marillion squeaked into Pete's honorable mentions -- I almost named my daughter after that song. (I was... overruled.) Both of the Kansas songs I would have named got mentioned, but I'll add one from the (mostly forgettable) John Elefante era: "Chasing Shadows." All of those are great choices! Thanks for watching!
Personally I love Elefante/Kansas album ‘Drastic Measures’, but the Kansas album before that ‘Vinyl Confessions’ is the only one I never play.
Jethro Tull "Reasons For Waiting"
Soldier of Fortune by Deep Purple
Entangled by Genesis. Love the guitars and the mellotron.
Carl 👍
Perfect selection.
Pure prog too. Great choice.
'Wonderous Stories'. !
Yes absolutely to Loreena McKennitt - got her whole catalogue, too. What a stunning voice!
"Silence and I" by Parsons is also hauntingly beautiful.
In Too Deep- Genesis
Your Own Special Way- Genesis
Marooned- Pink Floyd
Grantchester Meadows- Pink Floyd
Lavender- Marillion
Babe- Styx
Dust in the Wind- Kansas
Legend of a Mind- The Moody Blues
Fun fact: Your own Special Way is the first song by Genesis to get air play on American radio...
Excellent choice!
The Professor Of Prog blindsided me!!! Silent Lucidity is a great pick!!!
He blindsided us all on that one Drew! Great pick!!!
he finally picked something predictable!

For me, the ultimate Prog Softie is: "North Star" by Robert Fripp
1)Which Way The Wind Blows - Anthony Phillips
2)Dont Give Up - Peter Gabriel
3)Panacea - Rush
4)Dust In The Wind - Kansas
5)Home - Jethro Tull
6)Babe - Styx
7)Happy Nightmare - Focus
8)Lend Your Love To Me Tonight - ELP
9)Dusk - Genesis
10)Dont Let It Show - Alan Parsons Project
An obvious one- Dust in The Wind by Kansas.
Great show Prog Gentlemen. Great picks. I would include Vision from Peter Hammill, Camel’s Long Goodbyes and Big Big Train’s The Wide Open Sea.
Thanks for watching Sal…Camel 👍
Cannonball- Weather Report
Dawn- Mahavishnu Orchestra
Different Strings- Rush
Epitaph- King Crimson
Matte Kudasai- King Crimson
Dust in the Wind- Kansas (will never get tired of this song)
Entire Damnation album- Opeth
And many others that I can’t think of right now.
I also saw Steve Hackett several weeks ago, in Carmel, Indiana. Played every song from the "Seconds Out" live album. Amazing show from start to finish. Didn't want it to end!!!!!
Amazing indeed
Styx Man in the wilderness
My second favourite Styx song after Pieces Of Eight!
Elke by Camel
Dusk by Genesis
Yesterday and Today by Yes
A Pillow Of Winds by Pink Floyd (featuring fretless bass by David Gilmour)

I feel musically inept sometimes listening to you progsters. It can be the most obscure band or song and Chuck would be giving the thumbs up.
Don’t Jason, I haven’t heard a few of these, I have some homework to do
Nice job, Ken for mentioning ‘Soon’! I agree it is one of the best pieces of rock music I’ve ever heard. Powerful stuff for sure.
I love "Afraid of Sunlight" by Marillion. The live version is amazing; Hogarth's vocals are absolutely beautiful.
Yes!! One of my all time favorites!
My pick’s softy’s are
1 Genesis ripple’s
2 pink Floyd. Great gig in the sky
3 procol harum. Luskus delph
4. Steve Hackett. Hoping love will last Randy Crawford beautiful vocal gorgeous
5 Steve hillage palm trees love guitar from green.
Porcupine tree Lazarus
“Entangled” is one of my favorite Genesis songs.
Lavender and Kayleigh
Just Good Friends Fish(Love the version with Sam Brown)
Have all Sam's solo albums. Great musician & singer!
GREAT picks Stephen. I'd add A Gentleman's Excuse Me from Fish as well.
@@TranquilityFireReid forgot that one
A great subject and a great episode! So many mentioned in this episode are my favorites. Many of my favorite prog songs are "softies". Here are some of mine.
Genesis - The Carpet Crawlers (I like all versions including the later remake)
Genesis - Blood On The Rooftops (I am surprised this one was not mentioned).
Van Der Graaf Generator - Refugees
Pink Floyd - Cymbaline
King Crimson - I Talk To The Wind
Uriah Heep - Circus
Strawbs - Starshine / Angel Wine (The first part is a "softie" and the second part is less so... a great combination).
...and there are so many by Marillion
...and The Moody Blues are a given of which I absolutely adore.
EDIT. How could I forget... King Crimson - Islands (I really like the latest live version, oh so good!)
Off the top of my head I could make a whole top 20 of nothing but Moody Blues & related stuff like Hayward/Lodge's "Blue Jays".
Yes! Finally some love for Loreena
My top 5:
1.Marillion - Easter
2.Spock's Beard - Ghosts of Autumn
3.Loreena McKennitt - Penelope's Song
4.Yes - Time and a word
5.Dream Theater - The Spirit Carries on
Hon. Mentions:
Peter Gabriel - Mercy Street
Opeth - Hope Leaves
King Crimson - Epitaph
Genesis - Afterglow
Flying Colors - Peaceful Harbor
Pink Floyd - Green is the Color
Steve Hackett - Serpentine Song
Matte Kudasai by King Crimson.
👍
Shadow Of The Hierophant - Steve Hackett, is one of my favourite soft tracks. Though the second half of the song when done live can get very heavy
I like Kate Bush's The Kick Inside album. Dave Gilmore produced it so it has a cool mellow Pink Floyd sound to it. ELP From the Beginning and King Crimson I Talk to the Wind are favorites too.
She's a genius!

Moody Blues Candle of Life
Alan Parsons Project Old and Wise
“Entangled” is one of my favorite Genesis songs Eric, I was on the fence about choosing that as I didn’t feel it to be a true softie.
👍
As someone who actually loves, or even prefers ballads and mellow, atmospheric tracks, I could never narrow this category down to only 5, but I'll give you five that came immediately to mind. I'm keeping it to one song per band, though, or the whole list could be just Moody Blues or Marillion with Hogarth...
1) The Moody Blues "Isn't Life Strange"
2) Marillion "Season's End"
3) Mystery "My Inspiration"
4) Barclay James Harvest "Nova Lepidoptra"
5) The Beatles "She's Leaving Home" (and yes, latter day Beatles were definitely prog)
Julia Dream by Pink Floyd
Life’s a long song-Jethro Tull
Lucky Man-ELP
Pillow of winds- Pink Floyd
Book of Saturday - King Crimson
Jennifer-Faust
I live in the same town in Ontario Canada as Loreena McKennitt. She's super nice and very talented.(...the same town which later spawned Justin Beiber...sorry.)
Van der Graaf Generator Refugees, Renaissance Black Flame, Comus The Herald, Gentle Giant Think of me with kindness, Family My friend the sun. Honourable mentions - Steve Hackett The Hermit, Anthony Phillips God if I saw her now, King Crimson Cadence and cascade.
In no particular order -
Wishbone Ash - Persephone (There's The Rub)
David Sylvian - Maria (Secrets Of The Beehive)
Caravan - All The Way (Blind Dog At St. Dunstans
Jon Anderson - Days (Song Of Seven)
Cockney Rebel - Tumbling Down (Pschomodo) (pushing it with this one, maybe ?)
Incense and Mihr- Arch Matheos
Another day- Dream Theater
The Garden- Rush
We all need some light now- Transatlantic
Ariel- Anathema
I always liked 'A Gentleman's Excuse Me' by Fish and 'Wait For Sleep' by Dream Theater.
Great show! I was thinking about Renaissance, wondering if it would get a mention, sure enough but I had to wait for the very end. I think I would've mention some Italian prog, like "La carrozza di Hans" on the first PFM. Thanks everybody for those great listening ideas!
Wond'ring Aloud (Again) Jethro Tull
The Carpet Crawlers Genesis
Trio King Crimson
Onward Yes
Lonely Wind Kansas by Steve Walsh not Livgren....
‘Soon’ is part of the track Gates Of Delirium, so not a separate song. Agree with everything said it about it though!
Does "stay with me 'til dawn" Judy Tzuke count (sorry I really am prog lite)
My first thought was genesis-mad man moon. Also really dig the virgin and the gypsy off hacketts solo album Spectral Mornings.
Great picks, thanks for watching
The Lamia by Genesis
Wish you were here - Pink Floyd. One of the greatest songs ever written.
Love of my life - Queen. Intimate and the vocal delivery is spellbinding.
Untouchtable Parts I & II - Perhaps the most beautiful piece of music I've heard in the last decade.
Blackbird - The Beatles. Perfect.
Silent lucidity - Queensyche. Rych doing Floyd, what's not to like.
Ship of fools - Robert Plant. lush...
Some of my favorites, in no order...
- Washing of the Water - Peter Gabriel
- Wond'ring Aloud - Jethro Tull
- Sweetness - Yes
- For Absent Friends - Genesis
- Runnin' Away - Ambrosia
- If Anything - IQ
A few of my favourites are -
Nektar - it's all over
Camel - summer lightning (with a great extended guitar solo)
Pallas - something in the deep
Barclay James Harvest - the song they love to sing
Jethro Tull - and further on
I love the Pallas choice Gaz. Wish I'd thought of that one!
@@gaz6295 Thanks for that Gaz, really appreciate the support!
Well done. Nektar doesn't get enough love.

Anthony Phillips - God if I saw her now (The Geese and the Ghost)
Peter Gabriel - Mercy Street (So)
Vangelis/Jon Anderson - So Long Ago, So Clear (Heaven and Hell)
Big Big Train - Endnotes (Common Ground)
Great shout on Vangelis/Anderson So Long ago, So Clear. It is on my list!
Short and sweet: Jethro Tull - Cheap Day Return
Anthony Phillips - "God If I Saw Her Now". Phil Collins best vocals. Lovely song.
The Incredible String Band - "First Girl I Loved"
Matching Mole - "O Caroline"
The Incredible String Band - "A Very Cellular Song"

God if I Saw Her Now is just gorgeous.
Pete, I think the only radio station in the world who plays Kansas’ “Hold On” is WPDH. 😂😂. God, I love that song.
Love that whole album! All Kansas catalogue is musical perfection!
"Think of Me with Kindness" Gentle Giant
I fear I might stray off into art rock, but let's call them 'prog by proxy'
Robert Wyatt - "Sea Song"
Peter Hammill - "Slender Threads"
Be Bop Deluxe - "Night Creatures"
Saga - "Time's Up"
Renaissance - "Mother Russia"
Is Mother Russia a softy?
I would mention some Focus tracks such as Janis or Love Remembered
I know I am stepping out of the prog genre a little here (or maybe not?) but I have always liked this song and I find it fascinating as they never really recorded anything else quite like this. On the surface its a unique ballad but there is something eerie and sinister beneath the surface, that I can’t quite put my finger on and it makes the song even more interesting.
Iron Maiden- “Strange World”
“A look at love, a dream unfolds
Living here, you’ll never grow old.”
5. "23/24/11" off The Living Tree, by Anderson/Wakeman (2010)
4. "Stuck in the August Rain" off Roots to Branches, by Jethro Tull (1995)
3. "Hygge" off The Depths of Winter, by Tiger Moth Tales (2017)
2. "Immortal Beloved" off Symphony of Light, by Renaissance (2014)
1. "Proper Jack Froster" off Welcome to the Planet, by Big Big Train (2022)
"Prelude - Song Of The Gulls" King Crimson
"Afterglow" (Seconds out version) - Genesis
"In My Time Of Need" - Opeth
"Long Distance Runaround" (Acoustic version from QPR) - YES
"Song Of the Seagoat" - Pete Sinfield
Camel - Ice
John Martyn - Small Hours
Genesis - Many Too Many
Gentle Giant - Aspirations
Yes - Onward (Keys to Ascension live version)

- Peter Gabriel "Wallflower"
- Pink Floyd "If"
- Queensryche "Killing Words" (MTV Unplugged version - amazing!)
- Saga "Intermission" (what a great guitar solo by Ian Crichton!)
Another great discussion. I'll add Todd's Utopia 'Eternal Love' from the 'Ra' album and Steven Wilson's 'Song of Unborn' from 'To The Bone'.
Reasons for Waiting from Jethro Tull. From the Stand Up LP.
Forgot Watching and Waiting by The Moody Blues.
Fabulous Show!! Excellent idea!!!
Yes-Onward, Genesis-Carpet crawlers, Pink Floyd-Paranoid eyes, Jethro tull-Slow marching band and Marillion-Easter
Nice list Terry!
As for the boring comments, I don’t get it either, but you can’t please everyone I guess. Good to hear you enjoyed the show!

Do you have any positive feelings at all for
a) Barclay James Harvest or b ) Bound For Infinity from Prologue by Renaissance ( Annie's first appearance ) or c) a little known or appreciated album by a King Crimson offshoot , entitled Mcdonald and Giles . I find a b and c to still all be stimulating after all these years . Enjoy your commentary each time I'm lucky enough to see SOT and especially find your knowledge of Krautrock to be top notch , although I've never heard you mention Tangerine Dream .
Thanks for watching Kevin!
