    some great choices and a few bands I have to check out. My picks:
    Chicago II (or I could have picked III). Early Chicago was a heady mix of jazz-rock, jazz-fusion, classical elements, country even (on III especially), hard rock, experimental rock, they basically had it all.
    Queen II. Again I could have picked any of their early albums.
    Metallica - And Justice for all - I think this album particularly is quite proggy while remaining very much a metal album. Lots of epic tracks, with complex arrangements, time and tempo changes.

  • @knightvisioniixv
    @knightvisioniixv 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Queen II - My favorite album of all-time should qualify for this topic. Very hard to categorize, and glad about it, if truth be told, as I tend to gravitate towards albums (and artists, in general) that defy neat and easy categorization (not to mention that I was never too big on labels.)

This episode was an excellent topic and Rick’s brief history near the end was a great commentary. But special props to Anthony for including Todd Rundgren’s AWATS - a favorite album for me since its release from an artist followed now for more than 50 years. Fantastic concept guys! Always wanted you folks to cover this topic. Some really spot on picks that echoed my thoughts like mercyful fate! Anyway these are my picks
    David bowie-ziggy Stardust and the spiders from Mars (since it's a concept album with a lot of beatlesque elements and the variety along with the instrumentation makes it prog)
    Gojira-from mars to sirius (lots of time changes, tricky moments and dynamically very prog. Also common themes across songs sounds quite epic as times too)
    Megadeth-countdown to extinction (extremely tricky and off kilter parts with really complex songs compostion wise like an extra chorus or a few solos/harmonies here and there. Ashes in your mouth is the embodiment of what prog thrash means)
    Casopiea-self titled (jazz fusion band from Japan that was extremely eclectic with elements of smooth jazz, funk and even rock. Very dynamic and groovy)
    Bo hansson-music inspired by lord of the rings (an album often ignored during prog discussions. Extremely cinematic and more like a Swedish version of Mike Oldfield. Really cool artist and albums that were definitely inspired by the prog movement. This came in 1972)

  • @einarassipavicius1991
    @einarassipavicius1991 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I have a lot for this topic (maybe because I have a broad sense of what prog is?).
    Toto - Hydra
    Talk Talk - The Colour of Spring (most people talk about Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock being proggy, but The Colour of Spring for me is definitely a prog-pop album)
    Steely Dan - The Royal Scam (and Aja too)
    A lot of Ulver stuff, Themes from William Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell and Wars of the Roses are the two that have a lot of prog elements and more from a conceptual perspective, not musical.
    Led Zeppelin - Presence (most complex stuff from LZ and my favourite LZ album)
    Black Sabbath - Sabotage (although Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die might be even more daring)
    The Who - Who's Next (probably all their works from Tommy to It's Hard are to some extent proggy).
    Jefferson Airplane - Long John Silver (at this point I think JA is still a psychedelic band, but proggy elements are starting to dominate in their music... and sadly that's their last classic era album)
    The Crazy World of Arthur Brown self-titled (psychedelic but has early prog elements and you can say that Arthur had interest into making prog music and went on to found Kingdom Come)
    Megadeth - Rust In Peace is kinda proggy to me.
    Metallica - And Justice For All is also kinda proggy, but without a bass :D
    Faith No More - Angel Dust or even King For A Day
    Many albums by Manfred Mann's Earth Band (from Messin' to Watch)
    A Forest of Stars - Beware The Sword You Cannot See (from all of experimental psych black metal they do, this one is the proggiest)
    And I consider ALL of Asia albums prog. And for me Asia is far more prog than GTR. And I don't understand why Supertramp, Pink Floyd, Hawkwind and sometimes even Wishbone Ash and The Alan Parsons Project are even questioned to be prog. For me they are 100 percent prog.

    Fantastic choices - Loved Rick's treatise on the origins of Prog. As he said his version of Moontan has 6 tracks on it it will be the original Dutch version that is now the standard CD release, whereas the US/UK version had an updated version of Big Tree Blue Sea - which I think makes it even more prog - in place of Suzy Lunacy and Just Like Vince Taylor - the 1987 MCA CD has that version as well and has a different cover with a close up picture of a golden earring (wonder how whoever did that cover thought of that one?) Props to Anthony for mentioning Iron Maiden - you could take one or two songs, maybe more, from all their albums that have prog DNA running through them up to the present day - a lot of Dance of Death and what about Empire of the Clouds on Book of Souls?
    Nice to know that I've got most of what was discussed as well, though a few I'll need to track down , however if Anthony is the Chris Alo, George is the Ryan Skow of this group with those great more obscure bands that he mentions - and for which You Tube can be a godsend - just listened to both the Toxic and Tension albums, and I can see what he means about them.
    I'd add in the first couple of City Boy albums, more so Dinner at the Ritz, and their fifth , and to me best, album The Day the Earth Caught Fire; I'd also add all of Queen's albums up to A Day at the Races.

    This is entertaining. The group is more in their wheelhouse here than Power Pop. My jaw is still on the ground at the omission of Rockpile and even Fountains of Wayne. UK is my pinnacle for prog rock. Genesis' Trick of the tail comes close. IMO, a great prog rock album need an element of fusion. Tot actually mad a decent prog rock album - Hydra. Rick raises an excellent point about the beginnings of progressive rock with the Beatles and others. My view is that every genre of rock had an "earlier beginning". Many many people credit King Crimson as the inventors of prog rock, and I agree, but the earlier beginnings included work done by the Beatles and the Moody Blues, and as Rick points out, A Quick One While He's Away by Pete Townshend of the Who, was its own mini rock opera and arguably "prog”. Another example of what I am talking about as "earlier beginnings" to a genre: In my book, David Bowie, Brian Eno, and Roxy Music were the "earlier beginnings" of New Wave.

    Journey's debut album is a great choice. My favorite album of theirs. I consider this album to contain Neal Schon's best work. Very intense, fiery axe playing, especially on "Kohoutek" and "Topaz". Two brilliant jazz fusion instros. I wish he had done more stuff like that. And I'll add a another one not mentioned. I'd say Al Stewart's "Year of the Cat" is pretty proggy at times.

    • @maddysmith8846
      @maddysmith8846 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with you - it’s not classic prog, it’s inflected with prog alongside as you say folk/blues rock and it’s this special combination that makes it so fantastic. I have an original pressing and was a one of my records that I selected to take to my hi-fi specialist Graham’s in North London to hear it on high-end decks through B&W speakers, which I have - absolutely fabulous, but does mean I’m heading towards a rather expensive deck 🤣. I also think Pilgrimage has some prog colours, probably my second fave Wishbone album. Another seriously amazing proggy folk rock track would be Sloth on Fairport Convention’s Full House album - fantastic Swarbrick/Thompson composition that builds and builds with great intensity, do check out ppl. I’d also include Be Bop Deluxe’s Futurama and Sunburst Finish, which Pete has given a lot of love to - the Esoteric deluxe re-releases with remasters and remixes have totally changed the way I hear these albums 💜

In an interview with Andy Powell, he said that he's strongly influenced by Fairport Convention and maybe that's why most of the melodies on Argus sounds like medieval folk tunes.

      @@crossroader71 In May, 1974, a car load of my big brother, 5 of his friends and me (I was 14) drove from Lander, Wyoming to Denver to see Fairport (w/ Sandy & Swarb!) at Ebbet's Field. To make a long story short, they were fantastic (it was worth the drive with rowdy, weed sucking, uncontrollable older teens -- even driving aimlessly lost for 3 hours in Denver in a '69 Plymouth that was beginning to overheat). There weren't many people there, but the ones that were seemed to be dedicated fans. The main thing I remember was how everyone got strangely quiet and attentive when they launched into "Sloth." You could feel the power slowly intensifying as the song progressed -- Jerry Donahue was AMAZING, nobody could have played a more perfect guitar solo for that song that evening. The whole show was great. Memories to cherish forever. They became my 3rd favorite band of all time that evening (my 1st is Procol Harum, followed by The Sensational Alex Harvey Band -- 4th is Steeleye Span). Cheers...

    Up Above Our Heads by the Scottish band Clouds from 1970 is the beginning of Prog. And although they later became one of the leaders of the prog movement I consider the second album by Yes-Time And A Word-also from 1970 a giant step in that direction.

    I would consider Spirit's "12 Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus" is closer to prog than Tubes, but they're both close. Gabriel compared to Genesis focused on the experimental aspect of prog, whereas the band stayed with the 70's English standard of prog until they faded slowly into pop.

    Great show, guys! I really need to check out all of these. I would like to mention a few other albums that could be considered prog rock albums.
    The Mothers of Invention - Absolutely Free
    To me, this is where progressive rock truly began. You have the little snippets of songs all flowing together seamlessly, a strong jazz influence and some dynamite guitar playing from Zappa, unconvential time signatures, and a little influence from classical influence. It even predates Days of Future Passed by several months.
    Television - Marquee Moon
    While also a punk album, the lengthy jams and virtuoso playing from Tom Verlaine certainly gives it a proggy feel. It's also just a really amazing album. Even if it's not prog, I highly recommend everyone here give it a listen.
    Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy
    No. Fucking. Quarter. If that's not a prog song, I don't know what is. Not only that, but look at songs like The Rain Song, Over the Hills and Far Away, and The Ocean. All of them shift between different sections to keep things interesting. You also have more keyboards on the album thanks to John Paul Jones.
    Radiohead - OK Computer
    Honestly, this and Kid A could both be considered prog albums. However, this one is more closer to conventional prog. The lyrical themes and soundscapes are very Pink Floyd-esque, and the extensive usage of synthesizers gives it a strong prog flavor.
    Yes - 90125
    It's more of a pop album that happens to be from a prog band, but there's still enough classic Yes elements to make it not sound out of place. Changes has some pretty crazy time changing, and the instrumental Cinema is badass.
    The Who - Tommy
    One of the first major rock operas, there are several progressive qualities to this record. John Entwistle plays both bass and all the horns on here. Not only that, but the extended jams of Sparks and the Underture, the songs all linking together to form a story, and Keith Moon's powerful drumming all make this a prog album in my book.
    The Beatles - Abbey Road
    I think this one is kinda obviously prog rock. I mean, you're telling me the Abbey Road Medley and I Want You (She's So Heavy) aren't prog epics? Even Here Comes the Sun is a little proggy with the time changes and Indian influence. There's even Moog synthesizer on several of the songs, which was pretty ahead of its time.
    I feel like a great topic for the show would be proto prog. Albums before In the Court of the Crimson King that could be considered prog rock. I know albums like The Sound of '65 or A Quick One have some pretty proggy moments. Hell, take a look at the live version of Spoonful on Cream's Wheels of Fire album. 16 minutes of jazzy improvisation and heavy rocking. Is that prog? There's other albums frequently cited as the first of the genre, like The Thoughts of Emerlist Davjack and Shine On Brightly. I think it could make for a great discussion!
