A lot of non-metal and hard rock albums that I'm sure no one on the show likes but 1985 had a lot of great stuff
I fully agree with you on The Cure, The Smiths, The Pogues...and of course the genius of Hounds of Love album by Kate..they're all classic brilliant albums! I just separate genres for this show.
its always weird for me when i watch these panels because i was a complete Thrash guy in high school, but when i graduated in 90 i was losing interest in all the disappointing new releases of the last couple of years. then once grunge and 90s alt rock blew up i completely lost interest in new music and started investigating the previous 40 years of music i never really knew and a lot of my favorite music is new wave and goth and post punk of the early and mid 80s.
Thanks Bryce for picking the HAWAII album we put that out in 3 months some of those songs were played on the local rock stations..
Nice to hear some love for the Dead Kennedys on the show.

I used to have really bad headaches when I was fourteen, I went across the street to my friends to give him a tape of recorded punk stuff , I didn’t feel good, my head was throbbing so I knocked on the door, and he took the tape. In exchange he gave me a real cassette of hell awaits. I got it home, put it in and, wouldn’t you know, by the time the first side was over,I was okay. So there’s the beginning of my love of slayer.
1. Squeeze - Cosi Fan Tutti Frutti 2. Shooting Star -Silent Scream 3. Streets-Crimes in Mind 4. Producers-Run For Your Life. 5. Megadeth-Killing Is My Business... And Business Is Good

Metal Fatigue was my morning "getting ready for work" cassette! Love that one and the EP "Head Games". 🎸 Miss Holdsworth!
Almost 80k subscribers. Congratulations in advance
So deserved, a lot of work goes into this ch.
Great Year, Thanks HVS/SOT🤘
I only knew Mighty Sphincter. Never heard of the rest. :D Cool episode! All hail the Celtic Frost!
Great entertainment/ as usual. Thx. SOT 👍💯
I like that a new HVS tradition is roasting Bryce about WASP. Well done everyone! I also like that everyone is going quickly when Chris Alo is not on the show. I hope everyone saves their longest stories for when he comes back.
Iron Maiden: Live After Death
Tom Waits: Rain Dogs -Marc Ribot is one of my favorite guitarists
Rush: Power Windows -for several years now this has been my favorite Rush album
Great to hear Bryce mention LIZZY BORDEN..never heard them brought up on here before
HVS aren't known for their refined tastes.
Ralfs speedy album covers should be a repeat feature. Obscure covers and shout-outs from the Squares was a blast!
Yeah, if I do another specific year episode again I will ask Pete to let me go last so I don't step on anyone else's picks, good thing that Keeler was the only one that came after me. And it was cool flashing them when others mentioned them so I would not have so many at the end.
Pete, the Hudson Valley Squares is more a heavy metal/thrash/ black/doom metal thing of late. I love watching it mainly for the personalities. I like a bit of thrash but don't go more intense than that. (Recently attended the Anthrax gig in London) Iwould love to see maybe a different show like you do with the prog stuff but just on the less heavy stuff. I unashamedly liked hair metal back in 87, I like Southern rock, 70's Glam Rock, some of the bands I know you don't like I do (GnR, Motley Crue, even Pearl Jam) but I still would enjoy seeing them being talked about. I would love to see an alternate show where you might talk about the Doobie Brothers, Great White, Sammy Hagar, Triumph, Thunder, the Scorpions, Journey. All these bands you guys do discuss but I think some of the HV squares are more into the extreme stuff. I grew up on a good diet of Led Zep, ACDC and the Doors. Soft rock, rock, hard rock, starting to get heavy but not going into the extreme.
Yeah a new wave group would be cool.
Excellent stuff guys! This year had to be covered and love all the picks by you guys
My top 5
Slayer-hell awaits
Helloween-walls of jericho
Exodus-bonded by blood
Overkill-feel the fire
Megadeth-killing is my business and business is good
Honorable mentions

Kate bush-hounds of love
Ralf's vinyl collection! AMAZING.
For those who don't know. The Johansson brothers, that played on Malmsteens -85 album, had a father named Jan Johansson who was a famous jazz pianist. Died in a car crash in 1968 when the brothers were very young. He was very popular at the time of his death. His album "Jazz på svenska" (Jazz in swedish) where he combines old swedish folk music with jazz is still very popular and still sells pretty good.
Man!. I would have loved to have seen that Triumph-Mountain-Loudness concert. Guitar greatness!

Ratt - Invasion of your Privacy (saw them on this tour at Irvine Meadows. Had a power outage halfway through the show. They got it going again eventually)
Butch, I had King Kobra - Ready to Strike too. Loved it👍
Ready To Strike is a fantastic debut.
Surprised and very happy to hear Dead Kennedys mentioned on this show. I'm wearing the Frakenchrist t shirt as I watch. One of the first cassette tapes I bought was give me convenience or give me death, along with Carnivore, the Mentors, DRI , Subhumans and a bunch of other stuff mentioned
Got to see and hangout a couple of times with Jello Biafra and his band The Guantanamo School of Medicine, one night after a show I got Jello to sign like 16 different vinyl for me, every DK album and 7inch and all his side project and spoken word albums, he is a big vinyl collector so he was really cool about signing so many things for me.
@@countralfus6408 I've seen him show some of his collection on a video. He has a huge knowledge of obscure stuff and I wouldn't expect anything less truthfully. His unique vocal style is burned into my brain permanently made a big impact on my young mind.
@@philipibaugh2925 same here, his lyrics and delivery of them made me think. I seen that video about his vinyl collection.

Alcatrazz’ “Disturbing the Peace” is a stone cold classic from 1985. Graham Bonnet and Steve Vai deliver the goods big time on this one.
a classic for sure
Hi guys and Karen, Great show. My list from 1985 top 3 Subject to change. This is what I was listening to at the time. However, i would include Savatage Power of the Night in now. It appears Metal Church was reissued under Elektra in 1985. If that is the case that would be number 1.
1. Dokken - Under Lock and Key
2. Accept - Metal Heart
3.Loudness - Thunder in the East.
Invasion of Privacy is such a cool record. The cover and the production...a classy hair band record.
Indeed!🤘🤘
Warren DeMartini is Ratt's secret weapon, phenomenal guitar player.
Dipped just a tad from the perfection of OOTC but still a very good album and made my #2 here. Unfortunately they nosedived after this album.

Hails to Bryce for picking Chastain - Mystery of Illusion, a fantastic album
Chastain rules
For young gent like Bryce he has excellent taste and knowledge of music way before his time.
The singer of that band, is in my opinion the best female vocalist of all time. She really is without a doubt the female Dio.
Excellent to hear some namedrops for Black Hole, Bulldözer, Mighty Sphincter and Dayglo Abortions. Hopefully it'll lead to some people checking them out.
Grazie Karen...Black Hole is amazing!
I looked up the album on TH-cam earlier this year - since it wasn't available on Spotify - after Ryan Skow mentioned it on an earlier show about doom metal. I love it, though!
My choices are going to be hard rock or metal choices but who cares. I like what I like.
1. Listen Like Thieves - INXS
2. Songs from the Big Chair - Tears for Fears
3. Welcome to the Real World - Mr. Mister

When I first heard the album Seven Churches, it was on Montreal's CHUM FM metal show on Friday's nights at 11 pm. The host introduced the album like this: "Louder than Venom, faster than Slayer, here's Seven Churches by Possessed." Then, you could hear the theme song from "The Exorcist"... (the host always played the first two songs from each side.) I always think of that quote when I listen to that awesome album (which I bought the next day at 'Rock en Stock').
Seven Churches, To Mega Therion, Relentless, Hell Awaits, The Return...
1. Overkill - Feel The Fire
2. Gary Moore - Run For Cover

4. Ratt - Invasion of Your Privacy
3. Yngwie Malmsteen - Marching Out
2. Dio - Sacred Heart
1. Dokken - Under Lock and Key.
So glad Butch had Stryper included in his honorable mentions (I'd be surprised if he didn't). I loved when he said Karen you can put your hand up to your face all you want. People who never listen to Stryper and dismiss them because of their lyrics are missing out big time. Stryper is my 1st concert and 2nd favorite all time band!

Manilla Road - Open the Gates would be my number one with Walls of Jericho and Marching Out keeping it company.
Karen is a great addition to the group. Very knowledgeable and sounds like she's had a lot of rock n roll experience.

Nice to see you include them...The Church have got to be the most underrated band ever, fucking incredible 80s output, love them, have all their vinyl. Has this ch ever mentioned them?
@@seekah1 Thanks! I am only familiar with their 80s albums and i think they all are really strong (especially Starfish which is one of the best 80s alternative albums). They definitely deserve more recognition worldwide!
@@bartivo1233 I remember hunting down all their 80s material on vinyl back in the mid-90s here in NZ obsessively where they were quite common in ex used cond. I had a Goth friend who introduced me to them in those days and I was blown away immediately. They had a healthy crossover audience, I can't remember them touring down here much, even in their glory days. So unique, they never seem to stale.

On A Storytellers Night -Magnum
Rock A Little-Stevie Nicks
Brothers In Arms-Dire Straits. (Just for two tracks I still love that I know Mr Bray would hate)

wow! how can one pick JUST 3 greatest metal/punk albums/releases from '85 or for someone like myself with my eclectic taste picking a top 3 albums of all time from this years is like asking me to make world peace AND stop world hunger, i mean, THERE IS SOO MUCH great music from '85, and then there's the in what order, again IMPOSSIBLE with TOO many of them, but i got to give it you for being able to just pick 3 albums, even spending some time with it, like a week?, it took me 30 years to putting together my top 10 thrash albums of all time, goddammit, and being a phenomenon for me as a genre, and with hindsight, like you talked about, i don't have Frost on that list as Frost HAD thrash elements they ARE/WERE a black/death metal band, and Morbid Tales was a full-length, hence the US/Canadian release, which is the reason i own the Metal Blade press, and luckily Banzai released the CORRECT version of the Emperor's Return EP, namely as a 3 track EP, and speak of the devil, yes Karen Slayer sounded different as like one of my closest friends Gylve (who's insane with numbers, after all he is an amazing drummer, and you wouldn't know how good he actually is, cause he COULD play Rush or Watchtower, the latter being one of his fave bands, but in Darkthrone he still plays REALLY TIGHT and ON TIME, as his motto is after all, as is written on their new album, the metronome should be able to follow YOU as the drummer, AND HE MEANS IT, and he DOES IT, now being a thrash AND old death metal maniac like myself, alot of the early thrash bands, specially the non US bands were HARDLY thrash, a term that after all came from the H/C scene, but Hell Awaits has about 30% thrash riffs, the rest is death metal, fact, and yes Seven Churches IS THEE first DM album, Scream Bloody Gore was the first DM album MARKETED as SUCH , and too many forget Necrophagia's; Season Of the Dead released in '87 too, and another thing concerning Darkthrone, as Gylve is a big fan of Stryper's debut full-length, i myself only like the first mini, and the opening track on Soldiers.., and the Writings on the Wall from In God We Trust, VERY metal song, spcially the ending, but how many of you did hear the Stryper reference on DT's, Old Star? NO? thought so, and i don't blame you and he actually got very disappointed by that no one heard it, but i tried to explain to him a few things like, it's really NOT that obvious, it HAS TO DO WITH THE GUITAR SOUND on a particular track, i don't even remember which track off of Old Star it was anyways, but fun fact there, huh? 🙂) and many shout out's, like both Karen AND Ryan, who's the one of you i hve the most in common with at the end of the day, and Ralph, and even Karen, Land Of Mystery, didn't see that coming, CUDOS, though it WOULD not make my top 3, and CUDOS to Ryan for the MIGHTY English Dogs, just don't EVER mention Manowar when speaking of English Dogs again, don't get fooled by the epic metal album cover 🙂 and no i'm not a Manowar fan, a bit too over the top and well, i'll give them the fact that they were an influential and unique band, and have many die hard's, specially die hard's, i feel Ross The Boss made some good points in Rock Fantasy's special featuring him, as what he and i don't stomach that well with their outlook and well, boys club so to speak, as Metallica were the reason for them transitioning to metal punk on Forward... and coming full circle Epic Thrash on ala Metallica but ALL THEIR OWN, with their mighty and final album; Where Legend Began, now i have not only a love affair with thrash but with all things BRITISH in terms of H/C metal punk, thrash, crust(like the MIGHTY Sacrilege's ULTIMATE debut album; Behind The Realms Of Madness, PURE metallic Crust
1. Rush - Power Windows
2. Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms
3. Alan Parsons Project - Stereotomy
Heck yeah man.. Power of the night is my favorite Savatage album!! And yes Stryper!!
@Karen thanks for the Black Hole tip. Agree 100 percent - super lo-fi, unfortunately, but the music is great. Would love to hear this remixed/remastered. @Ryan - describing them as a Sabbath/Goblin combo works for me. Really enjoyed checking it out today.

SOD's Speaking English or Die created a lot of controversy in Quebec after its release. Many TV/radio hosts and politicians took issue with the album title (i.e., that French and other languages were relegated to second class importance). I even heard a very popular radio host having a segment about that album.

I’m kinda surprised but not surprised based on the crowd on here that Marillions Misplaced Childhood wasn’t mentioned
Karen's picks absolutely RULE!!! \m/ Three of the HEAVYest albums of '85 easily! Hell Awaits is Slayer's best album!

Totally agree with Helloween, Yngwie and Fates Warning. Can't believe Live After Death just got the briefest of mentions
Because live albums are a different topic entirely.
