    • @chuckazeee
      @chuckazeee 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@nectarinedreams7208 thank you very much, I personally love Punk Music, yet it’s bands that progressed past the three chord shtick into what would later the “Post-Punk” movement. Wire was one of those bands that sounded radically different by the time the album “The Ideal Copy” was released.
      Their second album “Chairs Missing” and “154” was the band’s natural progression from edgy Punk to Avant/Psychedelic Pop-Punk.

    • @chuckazeee
      @chuckazeee 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Like any form of music genre, you can’t just single out the entire genre as schlock when there are so many great bands that are waiting for one’s ears and open mind to attend to.
      Wire is among so many of the band’s from the original British Punk scene outside of The Sex Pistols and The Clash that were far more innovative and interesting.
      The Adverts, Stranglers, The Jam, Buzzcocks, The Damned were all pretty much brilliant bands yet none could find a niche here in the U.S.

    • @StrappingOldLad
      @StrappingOldLad 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@chuckazeee I also believe all genres have potential for good music, but I have yet to find a punk band I really enjoy. I like some punk adjacent bands like The Limit, Killing Joke and Death (70's band), but that is the closest I have gotten so far. Sex Pistols and The Damned are ok, but not something I put in my CD/record player. I'll keep looking.
      I'll definitely agree that Wire is an interesting band, but I don't think they are the band I'm looking for. They had an hypnotic quality I can appreciate, but only one of the 10-12 random songs I listened to yesterday (A Question of Degree) did something for me. I might give them another shot, now that I know what to expect.

    • @chuckazeee
      @chuckazeee 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@StrappingOldLad it’s a mindset, truth be told as mentioned the Post-Punk scene was far more interesting, while on the American side the Alternative (Post-Punk) bands were just as brilliant.
      The Ramones after a while became stale due to the lack of inventiveness.

    Another great show gentlemen, and excellent topic. Everyone from the team brings much to the table, and it
    often amounts to a learning experience for me since Prog music isn't my forte. That said, it was good to see
    everyone step out of "character" a little bit and broaden their areas of coverage.
    I'd like to comment on a few of the responses and offer a few suggestions of my own.
    First, Ken's rant about KISS was hilarious. Don't hold back, tell us how you really feel!
    I understand they're an easy target for naysayers, and are one of those bands you get or you don't. I can
    appreciate both sides for and against. That said, Ken and Luis, you're both knowledgable and share terrific
    insights but be careful not to get caught up in confirmation bias and cloud your judgment. "Dynasty" is not
    a disco album, the next was a Power Pop experiment, and the musicianship rose up a notch in the non-make up
    years. Gripe about them all you want, but they've lasted till now with millions of records sold. Ask a band
    like GWAR how many albums they've sold in the last decade. Gimmicks carry you just so far.
    Steven: You were spot-on with Y&T as underrated! One of the best hard rock bands from the late '70s still in
    existence, though I think it's only Meniketti now. They should have become much bigger. I can still listen
    to records like "Down for the Count" and marvel at the guitar work and drumming. Awesome band.
    Eric: I respect your opinion about Punk music, and this may be presumptuous of me, but are you basing your
    opinion on those sort of "birth of Punk" bands from back in the day? The Ramones, Pistols, Clash, etc.
    carved out a stylistic niche in their time, but Punk's evolved over time and I'd like to call your attention
    to several bands that embody Punk, or maybe more fittingly, a metal-punk hybrid, that feature excellent
    songwriting and musicianship that I think might inspire you to take a closer look: Rise Against, Strung Out,
    Thursday, Propaghandi, and AFI (more Gothic, mainstream), great band for over two decades.
    I highly recommend you, and Pete for that matter, check them out and see if they don't change your mind.
    Chuck: I'd be interested to hear your thoughts about the aforementioned, and any others you'd suggest. I'm
    reeling these off at a moment's notice, and there are many more I'm missing.
    Guilty pleasures: Great concept, not to be taken literally right? How about Benny Mardones, apparent one-hit
    wonder of "Into the Night" fame back in 1980. That man could sing! Anything by The Knack, so much more than
    "My Sharona," and a very talented, musically tight band. Great stuff, keep up the good work!

Also Depeche Mode was great too.)
    Wish I have seen - The Rolling Stones
    Best live act - Prince (Seen my idol in concert numerous times when he was still living and every time I saw Prince in concert he put on an incredible live show.
    Little side note, I usually agree with Chuck's picks but I freaking love the Clash. They were the band that got me into punk when I was very young. Great show and I really enjoyed it.

    Kudos to Mr. Golden for mentioning two of my non-prog favorites: Squeeze and Joe Jackson! I’ve seen Squeeze in concert about 10 or 12 times and Mr. Jackson, the Jackanape from Jackaloop Junction, (sadly) only once. Squeeze always put on a great, lively show and it’s quite fun watching the ladies dance.
    I was at that Philadelphia Marillion show that Chad attended. My friend and l followed them from NYC to Philly to Washington, D.C. on that East Coast, USA swing of shows in 1992. Bonus points to The Chadster for mentioning The Fixx as well. Their debut album is a real corker, especially the deep tracks!
    Major props to Chuck for bringing up Beastie Boys and Depeche Mode. I really dig the Violator CD and saw DM live, outdoors, at a giant football stadium in New Jersey on that tour in 1990 or 1991. Excellent show.
    Yes! Luis brought up Tori Amos, big fan over here! Especially her Atlantic and Epic Records releases.

    Band that changed my life: Rush. I learned from them to be true to yourself, even when the world around you disagrees. The individual has to go up against society's rules and conceptions just like the man in the star logo. Everybody's got to deviate from the norm. When you're 12 years old, that's some chicken soup for the soul right there. (And their music's not too shabby either!)

    Eric, you lumped all punk together, but I suggest you listen to either The Damned or The Stranglers and you might like them. try “The Black Album” or Strawberries by The Damned and Rattus Norvegicus” “No more Heroes” by The Stranglers, also, more of a post punk band, but Siouxsie and The Banshees, specifically the albums with guitar player John McGeoch on them like “JuJu”. @@TranquilityFireReid It's a fact that the biggest bands like Kiss, U2, GNR, RHCP and back in the day R.E.M. are bands that many people on the whole get so frustrated by because of their popularity, which have made them difficult to avoid. I have a theory with music that we don't just listen to music, but also listen to the personalities/souls of people. For instance, when Chuck despises RHCP or Ken despises Kiss I believe it's also because they dont connect with the minds/souls of those people whose fingerprints are all in the music. For instance Anthony Kiedis fingerprints are all over RHCP's music, and are reflected in the music which George doesn't connect with, not only in the melodies but also more elusively in the band's interplay with his personality and musical predilections. Especially the more we get to know about a band the more we get to know about the band members personalites presence in the music (through visual content and interviews), and therefore don't just pay attention to the music but also to the personalities in those bands. With my absolute favourite bands I love them as people, which include their values and political inclination, their inclination when it comes to their art. Naturally other people are gonna dislike these bands for the same reasons.

      @@johansoderberg6546 I loathe and maybe even abhor Gene Simmons and his views and opinions, but I love KISS and their music. I completely separate the two. As for bands I don't like, such as U2 or REM, I don't think I've ever read an interview with either. It's the music I don't connect with not the individuals, because I don't know them.
      As for the interplay between band members, well I'd presume it's almost impossible for that not to come through in the band's music.

      @@TranquilityFireReid I am not saying you should read up on R.E.M, but should you in fact do that, I am quite sure you´d like em more than you do now, especially if you listened to Buck's and Berry's interviews from early to mid 80's. In their music there is no metal whatsoever, just IMO great ambience, smart musical choices and great singing. But all of them dislike if not hate metal, so that probably explains why the most notorius metal heads in the panel made a big thumbs up when George mentioned them on ITPS.

My brother had their early albums and I've heard later albums and I like pretty much none of it. Sometimes we connect with things and sometimes we don't. There's enough music out there for us all to enjoy in our own ways. I LOVED Ken's comments about KISS and can completely understand them - it made for fun discussion. Won't stop me enjoying them and neither it should, just as me not liking REM, or Sade for that matter, should diminish anyone else's enjoyment in any way.

But sometimes some music comes along that I just can't find anything to like about. I was a little taken aback by some of these "hates" - in most cases I would agree the cited bands were overrated but "hate"?? For me, the closest was Red Hot Chili Peppers. Mothers Milk was good, but talk about a band that went from good to terrible! Good musicians, bad writing. SO MANY other bands actually deserved the thousands of hours of radio airtime they got. So that's a band where I am with you, Chuck, on the hate vibe!

    Hey Pete and chaps. What about the subject: I've got the album in my collection, to complete the discography, but haven't listened to it more then 2/3/4 times. For example, for me that would be all the Yes post Drama stuff and Genesis, I Can't Dance and Calling All Stations. Frankly because they're all terrible and life is too short. Or even collections where each album has not been listened to very much eg. my Jon Anderson collection. Cheers.

    At least we’ll know the reason why if Ken & Chuck aren’t in future episodes 🤣🤣🤣
    I love CCR & was introduced to their music thanks to quite a few movies in the 80s, one of them being Twilight Zone The Movie.
    I prefer Kiss Alive albums to their studio albums, as the songs have more punch.
    As for merchandise, aren’t all bands doing that now, from toys, alcohol, comics, puzzles etc? Kiss were basically ahead of the game.
    We got to remember a lot of the bands back then were either paid peanuts or wasn’t getting paid at all even when they wrote their own songs due to dodgy contracts. Kiss were using their brains.

    As a form of penance for the sin of blasphemy against The Lizard King I hereby request a UK Connection episode where Steven ranks the songs on The Doors' debut album.

      @@tonypeake467 No, not particularly Tony. I don't dislike them but I'm not into them. Ginger Baker was a monster behind the kit though and I love his playing on pretty much anything he touched.
