Back to zero ang buhay namin. Naubos ang dalawang palapag na bahay namin at bubungan na lang ang natira. Nakakalungkot pa din sa tuwing naaalala namin yun. Pero tuloy pa din ang buhay.

Thank you for showing me the immense beauty of the Philippines. Since you mentioned the 1991 eruption in the video, I thought I would give you my personal experience. I was stationed at Clark Air Base for 20 months, but we weren’t able to travel at that time because Americans were being targeted by terrorists. I especially enjoyed how amazing Mt. Pinatubo looks today. The only thing I knew about that mountain is that it was the reason I had to leave the Philippines early.
Mt. Pinatubo was about 10 miles from Clark AB (now Clark International Field) and was a direct threat to the base. We first started hearing about it being a volcano a couple of months before we left. They even brought in scientists to decide what to do next.
Then they told us that everyone had to leave Clark, AB. In one day, about 15,000 people and several thousand cars made a caravan to drive down to Subic Bay Naval Station in Olongapo. We did it all at the same time for our protection because of terrorist threats.
The first day or two was like being on vacation. I had a cushy cot in a gym used by the Marines, complete with hot showers, tons of towels, etc. I was also surrounded by people from my unit, so we all knew each other. I have no idea how many times we sang Jimmy Buffett’s song, “Volcano.” Basically, we were having fun in the face of potential disaster. I wasn’t really concerned, as I had already gone through a major volcanic eruption at Mt Saint Helens, in Washington State. I was about 65 miles away on McChord Air Force Base when it erupted in May 1980. I figured it would probably be about the same thing. Mt. Pinatubo was NOTHING like Mt. Saint Helens.
Thinking everyone was safe for the moment, the commanders were scrambling to come up with a plan on how to get the combined 20,000 people safely out of harms way. Then the mountain started erupting within two days of the caravan. As the ash shot into the air, it mixed with a tropical storm and basically rained wet concrete right on down on top of us. We took shifts shoveling the wet ash off the roof where I was at, but many other buildings collapsed.
The ash also left aircraft unusable, so the order came down to bug out aboard ships. The ship I left on was the USS Arkansas (CGN-41). Like us, the crew also had been working shifts all night cleaning the ship as the ash fell. I was told that the weight of the ash initially pushed the ship’s draft down another 17 feet (roughly 5 meters) into the water. They were still cleaning off the ash as we left Subic Bay because they only had one of the three radars working and the ship still was still too heavy.
Our group added another 242 men, women and children and various pets to a crew of over 600. Some of the crew gave up their bunks for us and hot racked, which is basically a time-share plan for a bed. We sailed overnight down to the beautiful island of Cebu.
The USS Arkansas was too big to go into the shallow port at Cebu, so they sent some ships out to pick us up. Then we were bussed out to an old, abandoned air field. There we were met by military aircraft that flew us to Andersen Air Force Base, Guam. I spent a day in Guam getting processed. Then they flew us on a commercial flight back to McChord Air Force Base, Washington, by way of Wake Island and Hawaii, because we had to stop for gas. From there, I went on to my next duty assignment, Langley Air Force Base, Virginia where I retired in 1994.
Again, thank you for your videos as they show me what I missed. Keep up the great work.

I remember the day Mt Pinatubo erupted, I was on my very late teens that time. Manila was not spared by the ash fall as the ashes fell like snow.

Most foreign bloggers focus on the south and the beaches. I'm glad you started out your Philippine adventure in the north. There are so many other beautiful places in the Philippines. Try to check Batanes Island. It has a a very different terrain. Even the houses are different. There is also Pagudpud with it's sand dunes and beaches. There's also the Quezon province with it's gorgeous small islands. Camarines Sur and La Union with it's waves and surfing. Even in the nearby Bulacan area there are rivers and caves. Explore our country and it's diversity. Mabuhay!

Way back in the 90's when Pinatubo erupted, thousands of people got displaced, entire cities, municipalities, villages, rivers and infrastructures were destroyed by the pyroclastic debris it spewed. Its ashes launched to the skies, enveloping the entire world, making the Earth cooler by 1.5 - 2 degrees and damaged a lot of aviation and vehicle engines and now its an awesome trek spot with the rain water that collected in its basin that now served as a lagoon.. Hope Pinatubo stays calm so we could enjoy its natural and awesome beauty in its own right. Enjoy!

Well, we have 7,641 islands so beaches are par for the course. We have very few provinces that are completely land-bound. Still, we have a lot of the usual land forms and bodies of water.
I hope though that foreigners will get to see that more than natural resources, what is truly amazing here is the people.

Never knew you could go to the Pinatubo (pee-nah-too-bo) crater now... such majestic beauty after so much devastation. And those drone shots--absolutely breathtaking! (wish the shots were longer). Didn't think you could top the rice terraces drone shots... but you did. You're bringing the country closer not just to foreigners--but to the Filipinos themselves. Keep on surprising us, you two!

When I trekked Mt. Pinatubo, I must admit I wast just dragged into it. But I was glad I have friends who really force me to go out. Hahaha. I really enjoyed it. We actually crossed the lake on boats. I was nervous at first but then seeing the volcano from the other side made me appreciate the whole place more. You could say the erruption on 1991 was both a blessing and a curse. But knowing Filipinos, I won't be surprised that Filipinos would look at it more positively. And that's what the lake symbolizes - the beauty that's borne out of a tragedy.

Guys, you - well, from what I have seen, so far - are the first vloggers I know - from foreign, or even local - to scale what's left of Mt. Pinatubo. And the scenery is just Beautiful. Love how you go out of the beaten tourist track to explore places, even most Filipinos haven't been. Thank You for traveling all the way up there and showing the World what the Philippines additionally has to offer. Take care on more of your Philippine travels. This vlog, the scenes, & you, two: AWESOME.

I had thought of that too, that they seem to do things that most other travel vloggers Don't. I think I realized partly why that is. Almost all of the travel vloggers that do promoted trips use like only 2 travel companies: Contiki and Topdeck. FTN use Intrepid, which I believe do smaller groups and more sustainable and authentic itineraries using more locals for guides and planning. I wonder if That's the main difference? I'VE definitely noticed a difference in the types of activities and things they do whenever they do an Intrepid tour. Also, idk if you follow any of the other bigger travel vloggers, but they're the only ones I've noticed who don't PUSH the fact that they're on a paid or promoted trip (as much anyway), like when they work with the Aus tourism board. Some of the other big channels can be just a Tad annoying with that part sometimes imo :)

The place is a sacred place for the Filipino aborigines -- the Aetas. That's why number of tourists is controlled. The water is acidic so to take a swim is a no-no. You can just imagine sleeping in one of the most active and mean volcanoes in the world. Beneath those peebles and soil is a smoldering lava.
