      I'd say that of all modern Doctors, he is by far the one with the kindest heart. He is the one that actually held on to all pain and suffering and chose to do the opposite. Capaldi is my favorite Doctor (even if the writing was a bit shoddy at times)

    • @einezcrespo
      @einezcrespo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +94

      Tennants Doctor tends to grandstand more. I felt Capaldi’s Doctor is the more dangerous one and had more emotional nuance. 12th is harder because he's the most vulnerable.

      @@einezcrespo honestly and I might get murdered for saying this but up until 13 the 10th doctor was my least favourite doctor of modern who as 11 was the doctor that turned me into a doctor who fan, and 12 is honestly my favourite doctor, 9 and 10 are actually pretty even but I think I like 9 more as it's all we got from Christopher Eccclsion so his series feels more special, but honestly I love all the new doctors aside from 13 who is performed well, it's just what she is being asked to perform that's the problem

    Sometimes I get the feeling that Moffat’s plan, deep down, was for Capaldi to close out the show in its current form. He always wanted him because of Peter’s versatility and charisma as an actor. 12’s journey from anger and bitterness to compassion and love resolves the arc started with 10’s “Time Lord Victorious” monologue. This soliloquy is the Doctor’s way of realizing that he’s spent so many ages trying to help others as a way of avoiding his own grief and guilt. This scene feels like a resolution for the reboot’s entire story. Alone in his last moments, the Doctor finally becomes a doctor to himself, and comes to peace with his past, present and future. The End....for now.

      Love has been butchered to the point where it's meaningless. Most people think love is a positive emotion of affection, a feeling, when the Ancient Greeks understood that is only the weakest form of love.
      Putting others before yourself? Do good to others, even if they don't deserve it? Do good for others and not expecting anything in return? Putting someone's very safety and life before your own?
      Those things are love. True love is death to yourself and life to others. To the world the greatest forms of Love are Foolish, but I believe they are wise. The kind of love the world lifts up IS Foolish.

      I really like that too. Capaldi's Doctor didn't want to go at first, but ultimately came to accept that it was time. He was able to reach a place emotionally that Ten couldn't at that point in his life, and it's great how the series shows that through the parallels in those final lines.

      @lhuras. 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      The difference is, that the 10th did not know, if there would be another regeneration as until then the Timelords only knew up to 11 possibilities. He was concerned about the one cancelled regeneration in Stolen Earth thanks to his Hand. That's the reason, why the 11th checked his body right after his generation for any missing parts AND later while living this very long time in Time of the Doctor as he was then afraid even more. This only changed after River Song "gifted" him her regeneration phases (however this might be possible .. but that's probably Timelord/TARDIS logic 😅)
      After reciving this gift the 11th wasn't that scared of a new regeneration anymore.
      It's Kind of a cheat by Moffat to not to be blamed that there can't be anymore Doctors after he took over the Story.
      I think that's btw probably the reason why they weren't afraid of a female Doctor, as they could point out, that the new regeneration circle was gifted to him by a woman. Therefore new possibilities.

      -The Master's arch of nearly 50 years was finally completed with them returning to being the Doctor's friend
      -All companions had their stories wrapped up.
      -The Doctor finally knew who he was and died fighting to save others even going back to the beginning by running into his first incarnation and convincing him to continue on.
      -Behind the scenes a majority of the staff left not just Gold, Capaldi, and Moffat.
      -And as stated Capaldi embodied part of all of his past.

    I really love how 13 is introduced here. Murray Gold's original theme for the doctor adds some great mystery while also establishing Whittaker as the Doctor. We get a nice build up from seeing only her feet, to seeing her in a reflection, to actually seeing her. Then she looks kinda confused but smiles and just says "brilliant". It's a great first line for a Doctor who might have some more anxiety than other Doctors, but has a cheery optimism on top of that. I just wish the rest of her era delivered on what was here, because I really love Jodie in this scene.

      No one liked Capaldi at first because he didn't have the light hearted personality the Doctor usually puts on to cover up his pain.
      This one was different in the way that he hides his pain behind a more guarded, eccentric, bossy personality. However, each Doctor had his flaw, Ten's was his rage, Eleven's was his running from his pain, Twelve's was his coldness. Thirteen follows the Mary Sue tradition of making female characters flawless. They haven't demonstrated that she has a vulnerable side, and therefore is not a relatable character

      @Zel Zwrd it is very wrong. Here's why, doctor who is and always has been about flawed people trying their best to correct it.
      It would be a betrayal of the truth for the doctor to be anything else. S/he has always been "an idiot" who cannot help it. Especially in new who, s/he is the hybrid of the messiah and pariah complexes.
      In fact, it's pretty clear that the doctor is depressed, deeply, s/he is conflicted by their need to be a good man and their self image of evil. They cannot be perfect because they view themselves as so deeply broken and evil. From the tenths "time lord victorious" to the ninths "just this once" s/he is convinced that the universe won't allow them to be at peace. The twelfth doctor even going so far as to consider ending their lives.
      S/He cannot be perfect because s/he cannot view themselves with humility, to explain I'm going to use something i was told growing up, "humility is not putting yourself down, but accepting your place, high or low as it may be."
      They can't. They refuse to. The vanity is palpable throughout each life. They view themselves as one extreme or another. To have that all change with a new face feels like a "it was all a dream" cop out. It removes the strife and struggles the doctor is built on. It removes the tension and realism of the doctor.
      Much as i love thirteen, we dont don't get much in the way of their ancient and terrifying self loathing.
      Edit: spelling

    • @user-cw1lq6qr8q
      @user-cw1lq6qr8q 4 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      @Zel Zwrd in a sense yes, the regeneration creates a new personality and certainly a new approach. However, core traits do not tend to change, and a core trait of the doctor is guilt. Take the master/missy for example, while each of the incarnations is different, the core traits remain, the progress we see in the missy is very realistic, it is slow and there are setbacks. I am asking for story telling, for the new doctor to show that she is the doctor, the oncoming storm, the predator of the daleks. I'm asking for her to be more than a female "superman", because it regresses the purpose of feminism, the show writes present her as no threat and only a helper, whereas she could be more complex, more dangerous. This would prove the point that women are equal and, like men, can be very dangerous If cornered. The doctor is, by nature, helpful yes, but also very intimidating.

    I just finished watching this episode yesterday.
    Words are not enough to tell how much I loved Twelve. Peter Capaldi's performance is amazing, thanks to his acting skills but also, I guess, his love for the "Doctor Who" universe. The speech is beautifully written, the music is on point, and the dramatic tension is perfectly balanced, between sadness and acceptance.
    I haven't cried this much during a regeneration since Tenth's.
    Thank you so much. M. Capaldi. Steven Moffat, even if I had doubts at first. All the team behind these seasons, writters, musicians, technical teams.
    It's thanks to you this masterpiece that Doctor Who is can keep going, and make us cry with moments like this one.
    All my love.
    From a silly french fan.

      I love 12 and so wish 13 had gotten a fair shake-she had so much potential but was crippled by Chibnall's bad direction and writing. Prepare for a rough ride and a disregard for established canon that would fundamentally change the character. I really wish Jodie had gotten a fair shake, maybe she will in an anniversary episode or with Big Finish. Chibnall did Doctor Who dirty and I hope RTD can fix the Timeless Child mess.

  • @MattLeger
    @MattLeger 2 ปีที่แล้ว +133

    You'd think that by now the Doctor would know better than to regenerate in the middle of the TARDIS Control Room! It ALWAYS wrecks the ship. But jokes aside, this is probably the finest regen scene the series has had to date. Outstanding acting by both Peter and Jodie, terrific writing by Steven, masterful (mistress-ful?) direction by Rachel, an appropriately poignant and dramatic music score, and as complete a statement of the Doctor's personal code as we're ever likely to see on screen. Well done, all, and let's hope #13's regeneration to #14 (due this August) lives up to the standard set here.

      Totally. Nice throwback to the RTD era - when "I don't want to go" sparked silly tabloid speculation that RTD and Tennant were being forced out. Not the sort of thing that would bother Moffat but very much the sort of thing he would tease Russell about 6 years later. He also kinda gets to tease the "Moffat must go!" section of the fanbase by pretending that it's necessary to reassure everybody that he's going of his own free will. Along with the "I know they'll get it all wrong without me" he is poking a bit of fun at his own ego here.
