Boost Dynamic Range without using RAW or LOG or LUTs
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 18 ต.ค. 2023
- A simple easy way to lighten shadows and boost dynamic range WITHOUT using RAW or LOG or 10 bit or 422. Yes you can get more range from 8 bit jpeg and H264 mpg and mov video files WITHOUT using LUTs or color grading. Don't do stuff just because people are doing it on TH-cam. This is fast and easy right in the camera with little or no post processing or color adjustments! Photography just got easy and fun again. Use DRO dynamic range optimzer if you use Sony cameras and i.dynamic idynamic i dynamic if you use Panasonic Lumix cameras, as well as the highlight shadow curves. You don't need to wear a stupid hat or have a purple and blue background as a TH-camr to be trendy. Just do this and watch how much fun photography can be again!

As always concise, no nonsense high content information with no BS! Loved it!
Exactly my thoughts. 💓
I love this guy. So many amateurs tell us what to do and how to do it. It is nice to hear from a real expert who calls them out.
Panasonic G85 with idynamic boost is cinema glory. Although I hear the Canon R8 in C-log 3 is quite nice :)
But....
There is always a trade off
because all I want is the perfect camera
that does not exist
💖
The equivalent in Nikon cameras is active d-lighting. It is important to mention that, in any brand, it does not affect raw photos or video. Just jpegs or mp4/movs
It does matter though if you are exposing based on zebras on sony lol. I believe it also affects the embedded previews in the raws. I eventually turned it off because it drove me crazy when Lightroom builds previews lol.
It does effect the exposure. The basic mechanism of DRO or d-lighting or similar in other cameras is to change the exposure to prevent overexposing highlights or underexposing shadows with corresponding correction in jpeg. So if you have that optimization enabled your exposure in RAW files can be significantly off. On a sunny day you will get a lot of severely underexposed pictures.
All jpeg settings affect exposure, including WB, because camera evaluates exposure based on applied tone curve in jpeg. So if you are shooting RAW, disable every jpeg enhancement and choose flat tone curve.
Canon used to bake in the data into their RAW files, not sure if they still do.
By baking in, I mean if you went to Photoshop or Lightroom, the settings you had in camera, will be applied to the RAW so you can just adjust them back to flat style if you wish.
@@USGrant21st yes, it affects the jpegs. That's why the preview image may look good but the raw will be off
Yeah, so on Sony, I use zebras to show blown highlights, With DRO ON, I'll actually be underexposing *more* because the zebras are based on the jpeg preview lol, a very intertwined and complicated topic
Salut Markus, I have been a fan of yours for a long while but I never took the time to leave a comment. THANK YOU so much for your ever so helpful, practical and ingenuous tips and tricks. Over the years, the more I invested in camera gear and software, the more I've appreciated convenience and SOOC photos and videos. I own a couple of FF Sony cameras and GM lenses, a RX10 IV and RX100 VII... these days, I gravitate 90% of the time towards the RX10 / RX100 cameras which are still holding their own, especially for capturing impromptu family moments. Encore merci! Un fan basé à Londres. Christophe
Man. I just found your channel. I'm a total idiot when it comes to shooting, and I use that shadow boost function all the time as a lazy-man's way to get a decent result out of camera so I'm not editing and grading for hours. It looks more than good enough to me. And here you are doing it too, someone who's actually knowledgeable and legit. Just like with your crumpled paper white balance trick (I've been using kitchen paper towel), thinking I was being a caveman, but you do it too to great effect.
So awesome.
Mr. Markus, this was a very timely and informative video. And thanks also for all the before/after examples, it really (and quickly) gets the message across. What you presented in less than 8 minutes would've taken the usual YT 'talking heads' a half an hour to do.
Great reminder that it's more fun if we keep it simple, and we can still get the same great results. Love your videos!
Huge thanks for this. My Panasonic FZ-300 has i-Dynamic, but I never really understood how to use it properly.
You share terrific insights and with a terrific sense of humor.
Markus, your videos are amazing. Nothing like when PROS come to play. I'm so exhausted watching videos about LUTs, Logs, new cameras, etc. I'm a Pro Wedding filmmaker, Sony Alpha cameras (A7III, A6400, ZVE10). Never used Logs, never used 10-bit, never used 4K60. It's always 4K24 (I resample when needed), 1080p60, 8-bit. NEVER a client complained about image quality, color banding, or noise.
And having someone from the industry itself, time and time again shouting: don't be stupid! Learn to use what you have!... Is so refreshing. I had the chance to buy an A7SIII, but decided for the ZVE10 (yes!), just for the cost/benefit calculations. Of course, if I'm shooting with a big budget, even Arri Alexas are cheap in the equation.
But sacrificing lots of money for a 5, 10% gain, and sometimes disrupt completely your trusted and reliable workflow to accommodate huge file sizes... my gosh.
You're one of my biggest inspiration since April 2021. I bought the Samsung NX500 and shoot only in JPEG because of you. I watched your "Who Am I?" Video and it changed my life. I love you Markus. I post about you all the time. 75% of the accessories I bought is because of you.
😊👍
Thank you so much Markus! You made it easy for those of us who hate to read the manual. As usual, well explained and in simple terms down to earth. You nailed it man!
In Nikon there is D-Lighting. Active D-Lighting is a technology that optimizes high contrast images to restore shadow and highlight details that are often lost when strong lighting increases the contrast between bright and dark areas of the image.
the interesting thing is the I-Dynamic Curve adjustment is essentially the same, or a Similar process to LOG, its just remapping the Luminance curve to keep as much information as possible, but it gives you manual control over it.
Discovered this a few years ago and came to the conclusion that when the experts all agree (ie shoot LOG on everything) they are most certainly all wrong! You only need enough dynamic range to capture the image you are shooting anything more just adds noise. The further you stretch a pixel the more noise you get, pure and simple. Thanks for stating the simple facts.
You nailed it Markus!!!! Finally someone that knows what they’re talking about! I totally agree with you. You just forgot one thing… the click bait title! 😂
Part of the joy for me in photography is the post processing
Get it right “in the camera” is my motto too. Plus easier to match photos and videos. Love iDynamic in my Lumix cameras.
DRO is actually just post processing in camera. I believe Gerald undone did a video on this, and actually showed that the quality is quite poor. DRO will not give you better results with noise etc, than what you can achieve if you had DRO off and adjusted in post.
Now, since the point was not to use any Post Processing and going straight to jpeg from camera, then sure, let the camera do the work.
I think the example pictures speak for themselves. I tested this as well and got the same results as Markus. Great time saver.
great information, but what are the equivalent settings with Canon?
hdr modus
Thanks for the explanations! I realized what you explained not so long ago, but having your advice gives me more confidence to use those settings. Less noise, more details in highlights and shadows, that's great! And with Panasonic you can still shoot in raw if you want. The other thing that improved a lot the quality of my pictures, was to spot the exposure inside my focus area.
Thanks for the reminder - most people ( self included ) stopped using DRO way back then when it was a terrible thing to do. Should be interesting to revisit it and see how it does on the more up to date cameras.
For Canon users, starting around 2008, this has been the AOL setting - auto lighting optimizer. It has three stages in Canon instead of Sony's 5. I personally find Canon's maxed-out third stage to be a liitle more timid than some of the examples in this video but it certainly does preserve the detail. Still, it looks llke Canon might benefit from adding a step or two, now that this is an established technological approach.
I often see people describing their camera settings online, who treat this as one more unnecessary, unexplained setting but, as Marcus said, getting your dynamic range right is worth it and it can be pretty vital. Digital sensors tend to exaggerate contrast, just as fast ASA film used to do. Enhancing dynamic range with these settings gets one more thing done in-camera, and, to my eye, it seems to bring more information foward than just turning up the shadows would in post processing.
I usually leave my AOL turned on and placed at a mid-point setting. After seeing this video, I'll probably get more aggressive with it in certain situations. It really doesnt degrade anything, and often seems to help.
Canon's DPP software also has a slider for this. In both camera and software, I believe it kicks in as the final JPEG is interpreted from the RAW.
Appreciate the depth and clear exploration from actual scientific experience.
Testing, testing and more testing.
True inspiration. Thanks Markus.
Excellent presentation. It shows how much power and capabilities are in cameras if you know what to do!
That is just sick! I've done this for what... 40 years? I know this is a digital setting, but I never knew about it. There are settings that I just never mess with. Some of that is just pride getting in the way. I always try to remind myself, it's all about the image - but you caught me. Thanks for taking the time.
Wow! Wonderful feature! I use Canon R6. Do you have any idea if those adjustments are possible with my camera? Do you know the name that Canon uses for it? Your answer would be much appreciated!
Love your stuff…. Since finding this channel, I’ve started eating differently, filming differently and my son (14) is running about the house with a handy cam! He says it’s the coolest camera we have.
Thank you Marcus. The call it Dynamic Range in the. Fujifilm Universe.
I can't believe it, I've just tried with my ZV-E10 and it suddenly looks so much better 🤯
👍
Best channel for photography by far
Awesome Markus. I love this tip
This is fantastic. I have both the Sony rx100 and Lumix G7 and never knew what these settings did. Thanks!
Happy to help!
When it's hands-on experience, Markus is hard to beat. I have had my two Sony cameras so long on "DRO Auto" that I had almost forgotten that they also have manual DRO settings from 1 to 5. And you can even see what they do on the display as you step through.
Oh dear. This is why learning everything about the tools you have and their features is so important. Just tried it on my G7 which I have had for 2 years. It works!
Thank you Markus just got my G7 great video ..
Absolutely love this! Any tips on how to achieve the same result on Canon cameras?
It's the hat, for me, that makes this more professional. 🤣 Makus, thank you for another simple and informative video. I will be using these techniques when I am shooting this weekend.
Awesome video. Very educational and informative. My Panasonic G7 has iDynnamic but I never knew what it was or how it could be utilized in the way you demonstrated. I cannot wait to try it out on my next video. Thanks for making this video.
Well done! With all this extra time i have now not needing to spend hours editing, I get to WATCH more MarkusPix Videos :)
You're amazing!
Awesome Markus - Love your vids. I just cracked up when I saw the mannequin head at 5:05. It reminded me immediately of the 'Hybrid Shooter' - the guy that always says "Hello my friends" in his awesome accent at the beginning of his reviews... anyway, bit of a random post, but it made me laugh and I wonder if anyone else thought the same. Hope you are going well, Cam from NZ:)
Does anyone know if Canon has a similar feature?
I'm not certain about the new Fuji cameras, but my X-T3 has three Dynamic Range settings: 100%, 200% and 400%. Each of those however has a minimum ISO required for its use; base, 320 and 640 respectively. Thanks again for to the point info/tips. Have a great weekend!
Fuji is just more transparent about it. Other cameras will say iso 100 and just underexpose it by 1-2 stops without telling you to save the highlights, effectively making it an EI of 200 or 400
I shoot on Fuji and will always use the 400%. If it's a situation like Markus is describing, I'll set my shadows to -2 to get some more dynamic range. It works great.
This does work great but when I compared images shot in RAW, it seemed that the shadows had less noise when base ISO was used vs. DR400. Put differently, adjusting in post was the better route. IF I was planning to spit out JPEGs in-camera I would definitely use it as otherwise it can be hard to get the boost in the shadows you sometimes want.
@@matt88169 Absolutely... those settings are mostly about shooting jpegs I think.
That intro🤣🤣🤣 love it!!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Lol love your witty sarcasm and now I know what it is haha 😂 Cheers so much so convenient in more ways than one ❤
Great info! Thanks! I know it must be legit, because you have that purple background. AND, you're wearing a hat! Glad to see you finally turned pro! hehe
I have a Lumix G80 and Wow. I didn't know I could do that to lighten shadows. Great tip 👍
Thanks Marcus. I really enjoy your videos. When I click on a video subject I would like to learn aboot, I DONT want to see an old guy with his hat on backwards and those ugly pink/purple/blue background lights.
Amen.
You are as funny as you are informative. Back in the 90s I used a lot of color gels for backgrounds, funny to see it come back with the RGBW lights and everyone copying each other. Grazie!
I mostly make simple ten minute fishing and DIY videos. This even helps me. Thanks.
wow!! it really make a difference especially in the video. I recently find DRO setting in my NEX-6 and I didn't even know what it does!
Thanks alot
I have my first camera because of you dude!!! , i bought a lumix G7 and 3 lens i dont know how to use all lens yet , but ill put all my effort to shot good pictures . Thankz Markus
pd: my english sucks
Enjoy it!
Thank you for teaching this. I've been having trouble with dynamic range on my Sony ZV1. This should solve the problem 🙂
If only Hollywood knew this so they could save so much money on those fancy 16+ dynamic range cameras.....
Thanks, Markus for that amazing information. I just purchased a Canon M5 and I have seen this in the camera. Thanks Mark your doing a wonderful job. Have a beautiful day.😊
I like your videos the knowledge in it and your passion and your mindset!
Never give up, your such an inspiration for people like me :)
I appreciate that!
Really good video Markus. This is one of the features that I knew existed, but never made time to learn how to adjust it. This is great! Sharing with my facebook group!
I'm blown away. I have Panasonic and I was extremely unhappy with the in camera JPEGs for exactly that reason, if that's all I need to do then - WOW, just wow. I'll try this little trick next time I'm shooting.
Great video thanks!
markus is a genius... just make the best we can with the simplest stuff
for canon its called auto lighting optimizer i think (disabled by default on raw shooting) and theres an option to have highlight tone priority to retain highlight details (the lowest iso would be set to 200)
As other commenters mentioned "Active D-Lighting" is NIKON's variation. I've hesitated to use it, but will revisit it now.
Well done Markus 👏 thank you.
You forgot to say Like, Share and Subscribe 😁
😂
Also the "Buy my LUT Packs"
And the merch; don’t forget the merch. 😅
TH-cam likes you very much because you have a very good image quality in 1080p.
Thanks Markus. Will check it out.
I have a complaint 😂... you missed the neon sign hahahahahah😂😂😂😂
What would the setting be called in Canon?
Thanks, Markus! Another Great Technique Tip!
Markus, Thank You for sharing this much needed information! It will save everyone a lot of time & money.
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!! YES!!!!!!!
Markus is the man. Thank you for all your videos. You got me to buy a camcorder and a camera. Your videos on sound are amazing as well. I am recording and videoing live music events. Any chance you can go over best setups for sound and video? Thank you Markus! You are the best!
So helpful, based on experience and from the heart. Greatly appreciated!
Awesome vid!
The hat was the best 😂😂😂
Thanks!
This is a great tip that I never thought about taking advantage of. Thanks Markus! Can I use the DRO feature in my Sony camera while shooting video? I never used the S-log much so this could really help. Thanks again Markus.
Yes you can use DRO with video, I showed an example in the video th-cam.com/video/yIZ-l7fJjO4/w-d-xo.html
This is huge. Thanks, Markus
awesome thx 🥰 greetz from germany
.. and you have to wear a hat! love that you keep it fun!
I'd add that one advantage of shooting RAW with Panasonic is that you can, in camera, go back to your shot and select the appropriate i.Dynamic setting and boost shadows after the fact. You can thus adjust your shot on the fly, no need to export files to computers and boot up RAW processing software.
That being said, there are some problems. These settings effectively boost ISO in the dark parts of a photo, so they will boost the noise. So when using them, make sure to keep your ISO low so that when the camera boosts the details in the shadows, it won't become too noisy. And don't use them just to brighten up a very dark scene, it's just going to be a really, really noisy mess, especially on video. Sometimes, you need to embrace the dark and accept some parts of your photos and videos will be just black.
As someone who likes to replicate the look of film on my digital cameras, I rarely use these settings and like the higher contrast of just turning it off.
Awesome - Thank you for these golden tips Markus 🕶😊
Yeah! I develop my pictures - but in camera. Enabled this DRO after buying my camera. Because of this reason. Boost shadows automatically as long as the sensor has this 14 bin information. And i care more about the subject and composition instead of lightrooming 20min per picture.
I have a cheapo, Lumix G85X. I wodered what those settings were for and, will have fun experimenting. Thanks for explainning stuff!
All Lumix cameras are awesome, no matter how old or inexpensive
Thanks a lot, saved a life! =)
I would probably never looked at DRO option in camera.
Another amazing video, Markus!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Holy crap I did not know this stuff...what would be the best in camera settings for shooting somewhat decent night club DJ videos? Some general guidelines like these to battle the dreaded low light noise. without buying a Sony A7s Thank you so much Markus!!
As ever, fantastic and practical advice !
Would love to see you review the iphone 15 pro in cinematic mode with HDR + just add a lut on top of it in post. HDR, stabe everything needed for basic vlogging and youtube channels.
Thanks excellent
Thank you as always. Until the next lesson 👍🏼
Great master.... thanks for every video you posted
Nice work as always Markus
I just love your content. Very valuable information! I use a Nikon D7200, and I'm wondering if they have this option for boosting DR. Thanks a lot!
For Fuji is Dynamic Range/Dynamic range priority and the option to adjust highlights and shadows
Yoh Bro! The cap looks so good! Honestly thanks for the information
Great video! Thanks for sharing it.
Great one Markus!
Lol.. Markus you should have tell these to Casey(Camera Conspiracies).. He is about to go mad soon :)
Great advice and great video as always! Thanks Markus!
log is love, log is life! just swap a good lut on it, and call it a day when in a hurry.
For that nice dull look
Always a Masterclass. 🧑🎓
