For some reason the OG trip videos are recommended to me. Watched them almost a decade ago....and now they are still great fun to watch. Tesla kicked ass for the Lord a decade ago...with superchargers (all 4 of them in Europe 😂) just working and the app as well. Lots of EV today still can't do what a Model S did back then.
I'd prefer the Model X, actually, but I know what you mean. That car is like a childhood dream... If they combine it with Google's automated car tech... I think I'd have to take a second mortgage ;).

Seriously the most honest reviews I have seen about this car from a real customer. Even though you had the "option" to edit out some of your "difficulties" you chose to put it in there and talk about how you worked through it. Yes, this is a new experience to be worked through and figure out, but clearly it has impacted your life in a fun and positive way! While I am a huge fan of everything Tesla, it is certainly refreshing to see someone talk and show things about the car without the propaganda from either side of the argument.
Thank you for the feedback :) Yes, I don't try to hide the flaws about the car. But I also don't whine too much about them. All cars I've owned had flaws. The best thing to do is to live with it and make workarounds.

I think it would be great if you could do a winter performance driving video where you show how the car handles in winter. I'm from Minnesota, where our winters are similar to yours in Norway.

Really nice video Bjørn.. my Ampera only gets half it's normal range here in the UK winter time.. Great to see that Tesla have overcome the 'potential' cold weather issues. I'm saving up my pennies to get one of these!
Thank you for the very useful feedback. I have read that Mitsubishi i-MiEV was able to do less than 100 km in winter, whereas the rated range is 160 km. That's a 40 % reduction. Tesla gets a 500 km -> 400 km reduction which equals to 20 % only. My theory is that a certain amount of energy is needed for the battery heater. So the bigger the battery, the better range and less % drop in range during winter.

the SCs in Germany are the main prerequisite for ordering a Model S for me, but I think it will not be 100, but maybe lower than the half. Currently there are 3 under construction I think. If you come to Germany please let me know. If you want you can overnight here and charge with 16 A. I'm in the North of Germany.

I love Tesla so it's great to see owners making quality videos of their everyday use and such. I'm surprised by how easily you have adjusted to electric, from the BMW estate car. I hope to purchase an electric vehicle when the prices have become more economical, but for now all i can do is drool over youtube videos. Before using an EV, I had to learn a little about the different connectors and understand the charging speeds. But other than that, it's pretty straight forward. Using an ICE car also require some knowledge. Like what fuel to use (diesel or petrol), what octane rating you need, how to check the engine oil and so on. Thanks for the feedback :)
I guess calculating charging time is just as easy as you calculate how much fuel you need for a trip with a conventional car. You need to use other kind of formulas, which formulas have been learned in elementary school. Am I right, Bjorn? :)
Hey Bjørn, lovely videos, I'm enjoying them allot and like some say, I'd love to see more as well! You seem like a very funny and yet interesting person to watch at with these video's. As far for my Knowledge there are not much Tesla's in the Netherlands but the ones I've seen this far are usually the Roadsters, I tend to like the Model S allot and with your video's you seem to teach me allot of aspects about this car! Perhaps you'd like to do more "close-looks" about your specific car? For now, I wish you safe Kilometers with it and hope you'll treat us all with these fine video's! Winter is not a problem at all. I use this car just like any other car I've owned. On long haul trips I still have to stop to eat and go to the restroom anyways.

I believe the reason the Tesla / Google mapping software was able to correctly display your position in the tunnel (even without a GPS signal) is because it was using triangulation from the 3G (cellular) towers to plot your position on the map. Not positive, but a guess.

Another very interesting video about real world use of a Tesla model S. I also like that your driving conditions are pretty similar to those I'd encounter here in Quebec, Canada. I'm a bit surprised that your using what's really a very expensive luxury sedan as a moving truck. But what better demonstration of the car's qualities could you make? I hope that some day soon, another type of storage system is invented, such as condensators, that allow for super-fast charging.
The car should be used as a car and not just as a showoff ;) So moving things is one of the purpose of the car. I am careful to not damage anything in the car while moving. And so far it's been good. It's the last time I will move birds though :P Condensators charge quickly, but the capacity is way too low compared to batteries.
Eco-friendly removal service/pet taxi ! Sort of. Maybe you had a tailwind on the return trip? That time you nearly ran out looked like a blizzard, maybe the winds were part of the problem. I suppose having to compact fresh snow with the tyres increases wh/km. Also cold temps = denser air, more air resistance, stiffer rubber in the tyres = more rolling resistance.

About navigation without GPS, that's what accelerometers are used for. Maybe car has one and tom tom doesn't. This is how submarine subs used navigation before GPS, by calculating small differences in positions you can track the way you move in a 3d space.
My TomTom GO930 has an accelerometer. When entering a tunnel, it will take the entering speed and use that one to calculate where I'm going. If I turn in the middle of the tunnel it should sense that too. But the system works only 50 % of the time. The other times it is just lost and doesn't want to guess where I am.
Great video with lots of detail. Question: What's all the crud on the back of the car around the 29:50 mark when you are unpacking all the stuff in the trunk? I live in Canada and we get pretty brutal winters also. But that doesn't look like slushy snow.
About the tunnel trip and Tomtom losing track of you, it's most likely the model of your Tomtom. For example, a rather old, but highend model GO920 has an accelerometer in it just for that occasion, when you lose track of satellites and estimates your movement based on accelerometer data and I've seen it work rather ok.
2:17 how do you know its not a scam ? what if you pay the sender 3500 kr and then never hear from the receiver and sender ? (and the sender/receiver address is false)

Do you mean the cover in the display? The display should reflect the car's color and equipment. But my guess is that graphics for Aero rims were never made. So it dislays the standard 19" 5-spoke rims instead.
Bjørn Nyland I guess the rims on your car look different than rims I have seen on other Model Ses. They seem to cover more of your wheel (and are a bit more plain) than others I have seen.
When you were charging at the Tesla garage in Trondheim, you seemed to have the charge rate limited to 16A. Surely that's not much faster than the 13A you were getting at your cousin's house?

It's reassuring Tesla is ready to help owners. Did you already tried the other public charging solutions like mennekes type2 charging points? I think they are existing probably at many places in norway, even with 22kW of power. Or not? Otherwise I hope the ferry companies may will offer an EV charging point onboard (even if not for free), that may be a good time saving feature when charging during the trip (if it's long enough of course). Generally ships (and ferrys too) are equiped with big onboard generator(s) actionned by the ship's main engine(s). Then I think the needed electric power is already available... I like your animated maps in your videos. Can you tell me what sw you use to make them? Still waiting for your next new video ;-)
Thank you for the feedback :) Yes, it's good to know that the Tesla will do about 400 km in winter conditions. I have tried 22 kW Type 2 charging points in Oslo. I get 100 km/hour rated range. At the moment there are more CHAdeMOs than Type2 chargers in Norway. But many Type2 are planned. Yes, I tought about charging on the ferry. But the trip was only 20-30 minutes long so it wouldn't make much of a difference. Besides, there's an environment aspect of this too. The electricity would come from a dirty diesel engine :P To save energy, it's better to just reduce the speed by 5-10 km/h. I use Photoshop to make the frozen lines and map first. And then I use After Effects and rotoscoping method to animate the line. This tutorial is very useful: www.videocopilot.net/tutorials/graffiti_writing/

Thank you for another great video Bjørn :) I am going to watch all your Tesla videos :) When there is slippery condition as you had over the mountain how is the Tesla when you release the gas pedal and the back wheels brake to regenerate electricity? Can this cause the car to slide or does the traction control reduce the regenerate braking if the car looses grip?
Thank you for the feedback and for watching my videos :) Yes, in really slippery conditions, the regen is actually powerful enough to lock the wheels. But right away traction control kicks in. But it's never dramatic or any problem with my Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 studded tires. Maybe this is worse on studless tires.
The in-car GPS systems normally have a connection to the wheel rotation or trip counter. That's how Google knows where you are. As they always do anyway... ;)
Bjørn Nyland This is probably because the wheels where not spinning. As Henning said, the in-car does probably not extrapolate from your speed when entering the tunnel, no need for that when it knows your actual speed, and also your steering input will give info on direction change in the tunnel as well.

Not the nail-biting range issue from last time, but a good video none the less. Thanks Bjørn. Impressive to get 375km on one charge in winter weather, and still have lots to spare. What did you do to conserve energy? Keep speed limits and lower heat?
Range mode, 19°C and 70-80 km/h was all I did. Driving slower is the best and easiest way to conserve energy. At higher speed, more wind will blow over the windows cooling them down faster. The heater will then have to use more energy to warm up the car. Range mode also seem to only heat up the front part of the car. No air was coming out of the rear vents.
So how much money would you save in petrol/gas if you were driving in a similar size petrol sedan? I love the Tesla EV and the free super charger stations. Looking forward to seeing them in Australia. Great video by the way.
Bjørn Nyland well i have a 24kw battery which 21 is usable. In current weather conditions which is spring in get about 6.5kw/h which rounds up about 136km. My daily commute is 30km so it's pretty safe even in harsh winter conditions.
well it seems he lucked out with the weather since low temperatures allow easier flow of electricity by lowering resistance in the wiring, therefore less work gets wasted and you can travel further on a single charge..
The wiring is already dimensioned to not give significant resistance. The gain in reduced resistance is much lower than the loss in the need of heating up both battery and cabin. I expect to make over 450 km on a single charge during summer. While I can only get about 400 km in winter.
The previous owner instructed me that the cat shouldn't get any food or water. It will do just fine during the 8 hour transport :) If it get water, it will pee.
***** Hot dogs on gas stations are extremely overpriced. I usually pay $8 there. But some places have hot dogs for $2. Yes, cars are very expensive in Norway due to heavy taxes. A typical premium car with good equipment cost $100k. But at least $50k of that are taxes. EVs in Norway are inexpensive because there are no taxes.

the SCs in Germany are the main prerequisite for ordering a Model S for me, but I think it will not be 100, but maybe lower than the half. Currently there are 3 under construction I think. If you come to Germany please let me know. If you want you can overnight here and charge with 16 A. I'm in the North of Germany.

I love Tesla so it's great to see owners making quality videos of their everyday use and such. I'm surprised by how easily you have adjusted to electric, from the BMW estate car. I hope to purchase an electric vehicle when the prices have become more economical, but for now all i can do is drool over youtube videos.

Before using an EV, I had to learn a little about the different connectors and understand the charging speeds. But other than that, it's pretty straight forward. Using an ICE car also require some knowledge. Like what fuel to use (diesel or petrol), what octane rating you need, how to check the engine oil and so on.

I guess calculating charging time is just as easy as you calculate how much fuel you need for a trip with a conventional car. You need to use other kind of formulas, which formulas have been learned in elementary school. Am I right, Bjorn? :)

As far for my Knowledge there are not much Tesla's in the Netherlands but the ones I've seen this far are usually the Roadsters, I tend to like the Model S allot and with your video's you seem to teach me allot of aspects about this car! Perhaps you'd like to do more "close-looks" about your specific car?

It's neat to watch a Tesla drive in Norway, I've only seen the supercharger map before this. Winter doesn't seem to be a problem for the car.
Winter is not a problem at all. I use this car just like any other car I've owned. On long haul trips I still have to stop to eat and go to the restroom anyways.

I am getting hooked on this videos. Tesla is a pioneer car and that gives sense of adventure even when planing the route.
I believe the reason the Tesla / Google mapping software was able to correctly display your position in the tunnel (even without a GPS signal) is because it was using triangulation from the 3G (cellular) towers to plot your position on the map. Not positive, but a guess.
Yes, it makes sense that Tesla/Google maps uses 3G to plot the position.

Hi Bjørn. I really like you videos. If you are planning a trip next year a little more south, we will have 3 or 4 supercharges in Denmark. We already have a lot of 50kw stations where you pay 2 Danish kroner per kw.

Another very interesting video about real world use of a Tesla model S. I also like that your driving conditions are pretty similar to those I'd encounter here in Quebec, Canada. I'm a bit surprised that your using what's really a very expensive luxury sedan as a moving truck. But what better demonstration of the car's qualities could you make? I hope that some day soon, another type of storage system is invented, such as condensators, that allow for super-fast charging.
The car should be used as a car and not just as a showoff ;) So moving things is one of the purpose of the car. I am careful to not damage anything in the car while moving. And so far it's been good. It's the last time I will move birds though :P Condensators charge quickly, but the capacity is way too low compared to batteries.
Eco-friendly removal service/pet taxi ! Sort of. Maybe you had a tailwind on the return trip? That time you nearly ran out looked like a blizzard, maybe the winds were part of the problem. I suppose having to compact fresh snow with the tyres increases wh/km. Also cold temps = denser air, more air resistance, stiffer rubber in the tyres = more rolling resistance.
I like your roadtrip videos and I think today's children haven't posters in their bedrooms about big gasoline musle cars, they dream about an electric beauty, like Model S! ;-) World is changing and it's lovely!

About navigation without GPS, that's what accelerometers are used for. Maybe car has one and tom tom doesn't. This is how submarine subs used navigation before GPS, by calculating small differences in positions you can track the way you move in a 3d space.
My TomTom GO930 has an accelerometer. When entering a tunnel, it will take the entering speed and use that one to calculate where I'm going. If I turn in the middle of the tunnel it should sense that too. But the system works only 50 % of the time. The other times it is just lost and doesn't want to guess where I am.

Great video with lots of detail. Question: What's all the crud on the back of the car around the 29:50 mark when you are unpacking all the stuff in the trunk? I live in Canada and we get pretty brutal winters also. But that doesn't look like slushy snow.

About the tunnel trip and Tomtom losing track of you, it's most likely the model of your Tomtom. For example, a rather old, but highend model GO920 has an accelerometer in it just for that occasion, when you lose track of satellites and estimates your movement based on accelerometer data and I've seen it work rather ok.
Yes, what you describes is what I also guessed. In many occasions, TomTom will use the entering speed in a tunnel and sense turning inside.

Can you tell us about your wheel covers ? I noticed in Dombas (6:30) that are Tesla behind you didn't have the same covers
Do you mean the cover in the display? The display should reflect the car's color and equipment. But my guess is that graphics for Aero rims were never made. So it dislays the standard 19" 5-spoke rims instead.
Bjørn Nyland I guess the rims on your car look different than rims I have seen on other Model Ses. They seem to cover more of your wheel (and are a bit more plain) than others I have seen.

When you were charging at the Tesla garage in Trondheim, you seemed to have the charge rate limited to 16A. Surely that's not much faster than the 13A you were getting at your cousin's house?
I was using a red plug which has 400 V, 3-phase 16 A at Tesla garage. It was a lot faster than 16 A 220 V :)

I was very curious how you will solve the charging problem when you was far from the first supercharger. It's reassuring Tesla is ready to help owners.
Did you already tried the other public charging solutions like mennekes type2 charging points? I think they are existing probably at many places in norway, even with 22kW of power. Or not?
Otherwise I hope the ferry companies may will offer an EV charging point onboard (even if not for free), that may be a good time saving feature when charging during the trip (if it's long enough of course). Generally ships (and ferrys too) are equiped with big onboard generator(s) actionned by the ship's main engine(s). Then I think the needed electric power is already available...

I have tried 22 kW Type 2 charging points in Oslo. I get 100 km/hour rated range. At the moment there are more CHAdeMOs than Type2 chargers in Norway. But many Type2 are planned.
Yes, I tought about charging on the ferry. But the trip was only 20-30 minutes long so it wouldn't make much of a difference. Besides, there's an environment aspect of this too. The electricity would come from a dirty diesel engine :P To save energy, it's better to just reduce the speed by 5-10 km/h.
I use Photoshop to make the frozen lines and map first. And then I use After Effects and rotoscoping method to animate the line. This tutorial is very useful:

When there is slippery condition as you had over the mountain how is the Tesla when you release the gas pedal and the back wheels brake to regenerate electricity? Can this cause the car to slide or does the traction control reduce the regenerate braking if the car looses grip?

Yes, in really slippery conditions, the regen is actually powerful enough to lock the wheels. But right away traction control kicks in. But it's never dramatic or any problem with my Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 studded tires. Maybe this is worse on studless tires.

The in-car GPS systems normally have a connection to the wheel rotation or trip counter. That's how Google knows where you are. As they always do anyway... ;)
I like using both GPS. When I was on the ferry, Tesla's GPS didn't register that I was moving while TomTom registered it.
Bjørn Nyland This is probably because the wheels where not spinning. As Henning said, the in-car does probably not extrapolate from your speed when entering the tunnel, no need for that when it knows your actual speed, and also your steering input will give info on direction change in the tunnel as well.

Not the nail-biting range issue from last time, but a good video none the less. Thanks Bjørn. Impressive to get 375km on one charge in winter weather, and still have lots to spare. What did you do to conserve energy? Keep speed limits and lower heat?
Range mode, 19°C and 70-80 km/h was all I did. Driving slower is the best and easiest way to conserve energy. At higher speed, more wind will blow over the windows cooling them down faster. The heater will then have to use more energy to warm up the car.
Range mode also seem to only heat up the front part of the car. No air was coming out of the rear vents.

I have driven 8000 km so far. And it cost me $50. If I drove the same distance on my previous BMW 525d it would cost $2500 in petrol, toll roads, etc.

Bjørn Nyland well i have a 24kw battery which 21 is usable. In current weather conditions which is spring in get about 6.5kw/h which rounds up about 136km. My daily commute is 30km so it's pretty safe even in harsh winter conditions.
well it seems he lucked out with the weather since low temperatures allow easier flow of electricity by lowering resistance in the wiring, therefore less work gets wasted and you can travel further on a single charge..
The wiring is already dimensioned to not give significant resistance. The gain in reduced resistance is much lower than the loss in the need of heating up both battery and cabin. I expect to make over 450 km on a single charge during summer. While I can only get about 400 km in winter.

Yes, cars are very expensive in Norway due to heavy taxes. A typical premium car with good equipment cost $100k. But at least $50k of that are taxes. EVs in Norway are inexpensive because there are no taxes.
