  • Epic road trip from Oslo to North Cape and back. Part one covers the trip to North Cape. In this video there are a lot of shaky handheld shots. I'm sorry for that! I will reduce the amount in the future videos.

    Watching this in 2021, with all the super chargers/fast chargers/50 kw chargers we have now shows how far we have come in 6 years but also how brave you were taking such a trip, and how patient Ammery was doing it with you. And this classic Bjorn is more or less the same as modern Bjorn - your cameras have improved but even back then you knew how to shoot a great video

    Your videos are awesome, I enjoy all of them. And this one is especially nice, with a kind of warm personal touch if I could say so. Thank you very much.
    Oh! And the Norwegian scenery is astounding.

    SJAJNO !!!

    Nice to see the "early" Tesla days. It also brought back lot of memories. We cycled from Trondheim to Andenes in 1993. No eBikes ;). And been back to friends we made in Risøyhamn many times in winter and summer. Been in Bodø couple of times. Still friends there. Also in Tromsø and in Alta. eBike trip 25 yr later planned for next yr.

    Top notch as usual, loved every second of it! Don't be so hard on yourself, everything was great from my perspective. I just might have to drive up to nordkapp myself now, what an adventure! Loved the white pearlescent Tesla, blue one was sexy too. The EV-community seems to be so welcoming and warm, I almost want to buy a Tesla just to be a part of the community. Ok so you are the crazy guy I saw with a Tesla in the North Cape! Amazing. Norway is amazing. I drove from London to North Cape it was incredible, but I get 1000km range per fill on my car so I didn't have as much adventure as you. It's pretty easy with a 70L diesel tank.

    By the way, i think while charging the Tesla can also show the KW (presently they just show Amps and Volts, Volt x Amps = Watt).
    I think instead of showing 12A, 16A (xyz voltage), it'll be standard and easy if at least Tesla shows KW (while charging too).

    • @mibars
      @mibars 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bjørn Nyland I've just watched your movie (hard to call it a clip when it's 91 minutes long :) ). That's amazing trip you've had there! You can really understand how good superchargers are when you cannot use one :)
      When Tesla is planning to lift that 26A limit? That extra 6 amps would make you love CEE red 32A plugs even more as it shoud replenish about 100 km of range per hour :)
      About that 16A standard plug: If you use Shuko -> blue 16A plug adapter you can use that portable "wall mounted" box to pull 3 more amps and as at low speeds battery managment eats some conciderable power it can shorten charging significantly. Or even Shuko -> blue 32A plug connected to UMC with current reduced.
      As you are clearly not an electrician :) That button and lever in that box is an RCD, kind of fuse that protects from current leaks (pops off when leakage current exceeds certain value). If test button doesn't work there is no power in the system (or RCD is broken, hence "test" name for testing RCD). Other protip: Circuit breakers (regular ones like Legrand S30X B16) are designed to represent heat effects in cables so they don't switch immediately when they detect overcurrent (they do if it's big, 3-5 times rated current for B series as a short circuit protection). You can draw 32A from regular Shuko protected by B16 for about 30s then you have to decrease to... 18-23A as this is the current range that switches off bimetallic long-period overcurrent protection in typical breaker... At 30 degrees celsius :) So when fuse box, connectors and cables are in the cold you might be able to pull like twice the rated current continously without switching off or damadging anything. Expect that cables and plugs will be warm to touch as this rating are based at 70*C insulation rating for cables. But Shhh... You've never heard that from me, ok? ;)
      Edit: Corrected mistake

    This is just a pure awesome video. Just so relaxed and enjoying it chilling out! I have a couple of questions though, for all those wine and beer bottles you had, do you need like a transportation inventory to show, in case police stops you? How does it work in there? And so cool we got to see your family this time, how did your family end up in Norway? and Lastly, you talked that your brother is in Prague, which made me wonder, are you planing a road trip to central Europe? That would be so amazing to see as well! Keep up the good work, I'm always waiting for a new video! :)

    Hi,
    Enjoy watching your videos, and I'm considering buying a model S myself.
    When you post statistics for the legs you drive, could you please also include the average speed and the actual power consumption (including utility as heat, lights etc), since the onboard calculation only include the motor power consumption (if I understand it correctly)
    Also looking forward to part II

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately, the car doesn't show average speed. I tried calculating average speed in my early videos. But it was too complicated because I sometimes have many stops to shoot videos. I also tried Google My Tracks. The problem there is that when the phone switches to EDGE-mode, there will be noise in my videos. To limit that, I sometimes switches to flight mode before shooting critical videos.
      There is no way for me to measure heat, lights, etc. Only Tesla can see those numbers.

    Woohoo new video thanks Bjorn XD
    I can see you will break the 200Wh/km barrier this spring !!
    Hey did you know Final Cut Pro has an digital image stabiliser function? But it will crop the footage a bit ..

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you :) Yes, I'm aware of the stabilization features. However, the shaky shots are just too shaky to be fixed by software. Especially when I enter/exit the car, the camera shakes a lot. I also tend to flip the camera too much forward/backwards.

    Hi, Bjorn. Love to see your video again. It is very long video but surprisingly i am not feeling sleepy. The views is more better than your usual videos and it is nice of you to show us your mom's place. It is a very long drive back to your mom's place. I heard that tesla is selling very well in norway so i think this will give some pressure for tesla to build more superchargers. Actually i am quite interested to know who is financing the superchargers ? Tesla by itself or cooperation with the property owners ? Is tesla has to rent the space with the property owners ? who is liable for the daily electricity bills ?
    One thing i salute on you is that you are patience man whom can wait for so long for the car to be charged and of course your wife too must also given the credit. It must be a tiring ride with all the waiting but i guess the country side views is paying off. Anyway, can't wait for the second half of the video. Cheers !

      Tesla is selling very well in Norway. It's the second most selling country in the world. Only USA sells more. When buying a 85 kWh Tesla, about $3000 is for supercharging. When Tesla sold almost 1500 cars in March, they get about $4.5 mill for superchargers. I also heard that the superchargers use the same chargers that are onboard in the cars. The price for a supercharger is claimed to be lower than a CHAdeMO.
      Yes, it's usually a very long wait for the charge. We spend the time eating, walking the dog (part 2) and getting some much needed sleep. So it's not really that bad. But of course, a 30-60 minute stop on SC would be a lot better!

    Love the Toyota rv4 electric vehicle part of the video! That the Toyota uses the general motor ev1 battery from the ev1 cars that all got recalled by General Motors that basically killed of the electric car for over 20 years .... and I love that the battery is performing like new after 14 years of usage...which kills the argument that battery's are bad for the environment when about 96% of the battery's uses today in Toyota hybrids and electric cars are recyclable .....

      Yeah, I love it too. People who haven't watched "Who killed the electric car" and "The revenge of the electric car" should watch them both before buying a Tesla :P

      You used to see a very small fleet of those RAV4s near me at the Niagara Power Project . . . but for some unknown reason you see no EVs or even chargers there these days. Down the road at the Falls, New York State Parks has some GEM vehicles, and there's a couple of ChargePoint stations in the parking lots, but not yet any SCs. Yet all of that world famous juice is being generated only a stone's throw away! :-)

      Yes, indeed! If you look at 71° north is where Siberia and Greenland is. Ice Road Truckers don't even drive that far north :) I don't think anyone have charged at 11 kW that far north :P

    I guess you would have to time and log length of all the individual runs, and add them together for the leg if one should keep track of the average speed. I guess that's adds a bit of work load when you make the videos (but it would be interesting to know...)
    Regarding the actual power consumption, does the vehicle range calculation take height for the additional power consumption for utilities when calculating the actual range? (does 390 km of calculated "true" range actually get you 390 km of range?)
    Also, It would be useful though to have access to the actual kwh's received (or used) per charge to keep track of the battery capacity (how else can you tell? The range calculation is based on previous driving, which consequently is constantly changing...)
    Anyway, just curious...I enjoy your video's anyway!

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would be great if Tesla added average speed in the trip meters. It's just a small modification. My previous BMW and Renault had it. The range estimation is based on a fixed rate. People claim that typical range is 200 Wh/km. But my own long trips indicate that typical range is 180 Wh/km. So when I charge to 400 km, I have to average 180 Wh/km to get that range. If I average 200 Wh/km I get 360 km.

    Hi Bjorn! Excellent video - really enjoyed it and looking forward to part 2! I stayed watching your videos because I am interested in buying tye Tesla and wanted to get an owners view! So you've owned the car for 7 months now! How does it rate in comparison to other cars you've own i.e. BMW 5 series touring! I k know that one of the main benefits of owning an electric car is that you never have to pay for fuel again but how does the ownership experience feel when you need to look for a charging point and knowing that you may have to wait for hours to continue your journey?

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The interior in BMW is still better, same is Hifi-Professional. But the ride and the big screen with it's remote access is just outstanding. So overall I'm very pleased with the Tesla.
      When traveling far off the superchargers, charging can be a bit boring. But I've gotten used to the 22 kW chargers. I will usually arrive to a city and only need to charge a few hours at a 22 kW. While I'm charging I use Facebook, call/message people (Easybring) or just relax.
      The limitation in the charging is just temporarily. In a few years it will be much better. So I'm not worried at all. This disadvantage is what we get in return of free toll roads, free ferries, free parking, etc.

    Great video again! Norway has a great countryview and a lot very nice people! Question: the Toyota RAV4 is homemade to a EV?

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you :) As far as I know, the Rav4 is a production car.

    • @mibars
      @mibars 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bjørn Nyland Rav4 EV was a production EV from California build in order to comply with CARB regulations. They were later changed and most EV's were scrapped as they were only leased, not sold, possibly to avoid later problems with the need of keeping service network for few unusual cars. Somehow Toyota sold, or was persuaded to sell some of their Rav4 fleet to public with some "no service no warranty" agreement and that's how it's the only surviving example of "CARB" electric cars apart form few EV1 in museums.
      I've seen an electric Rav4 in California 2 years ago as a National Park Service vehicle in Point Reyes.

    Nice trip, but weather's a little cold there in Norway, the full battery may not last for 400km on road, is it?

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      It can last 400 km even in winter temperatures. I have proven it many times in my previous videos where I drove 375-380 km in one charge and still had more left.
