I told myself I was gonna play WT and then play like Marisa or something. Welp I got 28 hours of Luke Style in World tour so now he’s all I can play. I didn’t expect it but now it’s like my hands only want to pilot Luke.
I wasn’t really interested in him in 5 and none of the characters grasped my attention in 6 but I started messing around with trials and man, Luke feels good.
Yes. Feels good. I may be a hardcore Gief main all my life but I am grateful to have a "pocket sand!..." sorry, I meant pocket Luke. Don't know what got over me there. 8v
Considering lore-wise Luke is Guille's student, Sand Blast just seem like Guille's Sonic Boom technique without the arm rolling motion first as startup like Guille does. Luke just throws it out with a punch, lol.
@@mrbdp932 honestly ive always kinda interpreted it as him almost brute forcing the sonic boom technique and inventing something new "okay luke youre gonna wanna--" "LIKE THIS GUILE? *WHAM*" "...no but i guess that works"
@@mrbdp932 Yeah, Charlie was The Ace in part because he could do Sonic Booms with only one hand or even one foot. The only other SF characters that I can think off hand who tend to need only one hand for projectiles without any implements are all among the heaviest hitters in the sitting since it's just Oro, Bison, and technically Akuma given his air fireballs. Oh. Gouken('s ghost?) also only uses one hand, but I had to honestly look that up to be sure. (It should be noted this means even Gill and Urien technically use both hands outside of Gill's one super.) So Luke is basically just built different, which makes sense if Capcom is pushing him as the new protagonist and don't want him to fail like poor Alex did. I guess those stupid Popeye arms of his at least sell the fact that he can punch the air harder than most even if I still hate to look at them personally, though they're better here IMO than they were in _SFV_ given his new aesthetic.
@@MusicoftheDamned If you look closely, Deejay also throws projectiles with one hand. His heavy shoots out two, but that's just him shooting one with each hand. In Ryu's arcade win screen against Deejay in SF6, Ryu mentions how there's not much depth to Deejay's fighting style, but no darkness either, which Ryu considers a good thing. It seems to imply that Deejay never really fights that seriously and is just jamming to the beat the whole time. Which begs the question how strong Deejay is if he's actually serious...
Great overview Sandblastjam! Being able to slow the game down to 50% in training mode has helped me so much to get the perfect flash knuckle timing down
Luke doing sand blast as Guiles student one handed reminds me that one handed projectiles while maintaining strength is in Street Fighter the sign of a master. Akuma can do it, Gouken could one hand AND charge cos he's built like that, etc. The fun lore of Dan having a dingy projectile one handed but does actually decent damage implying his latent ability but lack of discipline is also a nice touch. Considering sand blast doesn't keep going like most projectiles I wonder if the idea is he just brute forces his own style of sonic boom?
Just in case anyone didn’t know Sandblast is an actual thing. Sand is shot out at extreme speeds using either water or air to roughen surfaces. My assumption is that’s why it’s called that anyway lol
@@theSkarekro typo there I meant roughen, it can be used to toughen smooth surfaces or smooth surfaces as well as remove contaminants (from what I can tell on my 10 second googling). I didn’t want to get into the specifics with my initial comment to avoid confusion. But with that typo it totally did LMAO
Luke was obviously strong in SFV, but he feels so much cooler and unique in SF6 from the way he's designed around the new systems and rules. Great new protagonist all around.
I kind of miss some of his mechanics from 5 though. Being able to further enhance your perfect knuckles or his VT2 that gave him crazy juggles were all really fun.
For a cool drive rush combo if you get a medium charged knuckle you can follow up with DR HP into perfect heavy knuckle. Big dmg for only one bar of commitment. I stole this route from Kami, I see him do it a lot. Also use his back HP(suppressor) that move is stealth op. It doesn’t freeze throws anymore but it pulls your hurt box back like ibuki Vskill 1 used to. It’s great for whiff punishing jabs and shimmying throws in a similar manor to deejays sway, and you can go into cr MP after or confirm it into full charged light knuckle or ex knuckle or DR back HK. Really a sleeper normal, only -3 as well, very abusable in the corner and I doubt most none Luke players know he still has that move. also in the corner after light perfect normal, you can get drive rush heavy punch, fireball, heavy DP. Medium DP if you miss perfect timing. Good for like 100 or so extra dmg.
I'm afraid there isn't a trick to it, you just kinda have to do it. The good news is human muscle memory is pretty incredible for this sort of thing. I went from being unable to do it even remotely consistently to getting it about 70% of the time just doing luke's trials. Put in a little practice and it'll get easier for you than you'd expect.
You’ll get the PERFECT when you release around the moment Luke’s arm flashes to indicate the perfect frames. Once you learn the muscle memory from seeing the visual indicator you’ll get the hang of it after a while.

Neither of those characters rely on the mechanics to function, if you're worried about that. You can build your playstyle around your ability and build combo routes for either one of those characters that still do good damage without needing the "perfect" moves: You might be a little less meter efficient or do a little less damage, but you won't be so far behind the curve that it'll keep you from beating other players of your skill level.
