I was very glad to chill and watch FTR today… my 7 year old goldfish passed away this morning and this cheered me up a bit. I went on a 3 day trip thinking I could trust my family to follow simple instructions to take care of my pets but I was way wrong apparently. Luckily my 9 year old cory is fine, but still, my goldfish was so special to me. (Also, for context, they weren’t in the same tank lol. My tanks are all beautiful, proper sized, properly maintained, and planted.)

@@mrlag7532 I genuinely don’t know... what I do know is that he wasn’t fed every time he was supposed to be fed (although that was likely not the cause). Also, I tested the water and it was pretty normal and the other goldfish in the tank was completely fine. Something seemed off about the heater and filter but they are completely normal now. I really wonder what could have happened but maybe it’s better I don’t

Hey! Its great that youve learned a lot but id recommend doing a lot more research on sororities! The minimum is often a 20 gal and even then a large percentage of them fail.

    • @snakewithapen5489
      @snakewithapen5489 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I would also second that you should increase the size of your sorority tank. Everything else you're doing sounds amazing! But a 10 gallon is small for 4 betta-sized fish even if it's planted, and especially for bettas which even the females get quite aggressive and nippy with each other, they establish a pecking order of sorts. They will surely benefit from a little more room and places to hide from each other ^^

btw, the tank at 8 minutes is a biorb
the water does a circular motion (their big selling point)
I had one up - same type 8 gallons for a year with guppies. It was fine. But imo not a good tank for Bettas though. I also grew out/quarantined some Mollies in it before moving them into 38 gallon last year.
I gave it to a co-worker for guppies and/or shrimp.

I’m currently recovering from a hip surgery (labrum tear + osteoplasty), but my worst bone break was when I crashed a racing bike down a mountain due to a brake failure 50miles into the ride. Tore all the cartilage in my chest and back, broke all the ribs on my left side in multiple places, broke left collarbone, and collapsed left lung. A year later I was riding 100+ mile events through the mountains again. My biggest piece of advise is when ur doing physical therapy, take it seriously and don’t skimp out on your stretches and exercises! You got this! Get well, Chirs!

When I was 3, I 'drove' down the staircase on a push Care-Bear car with beanie babies stuffed under my arms.
The Care-Bear car hit friction with the first step, and stopped, and I went barreling down. Tried to stop myself at the bottom and snapped two places in my arm, resulting in 2 surgeries as a 3 year old.
I have full movement of my arm; hell, even a little more than I should. It's a miracle, really. They thought I would never have a full extension again.

Spine, L1 compression fracture, back in February.. Now I'm finally able to stand for a decent length of time I'm trying hard to reclaim my tanks from algae. I couldn't drive and I ran out of Co2 in the first week, I couldn't stand for more than 2-4 minutes before the pain was unbearable so water changes became a weekly slow task instead of 2-3 times weekly and green thread/hair algae is an absolute nightmare.
I spent a lot of time laying flat on my back in between doing ultra short tasks. Laying down reduced the pain, a bit, but also kept my spine straight. I lived off muesli bars for a week , then freezer meals for a few.. To keep myself company I had a tv in my bedroom so I watched TH-cam, anime, tv shows, movies. Once I got well enough to sit up I began drawing while listening to audio books, I crocheted a blanket. I listened to music more than I had in quite a while. I set myself goals like making quick 5 minute meals etc, anything to get me up and moving regularly, but only for short intervals due to pain. I included some vitamins and supplements to help with my diet being utterly inadequate. I sent my friends pictures of my stupid drawings/projects. Above all else I reminded myself that it was going to take time, most likely would heal okay and to be patient with my body, I still felt totally useless intermittently. I'm almost there, my last appointment is later this month.. Try and stay positive, dig into hobbies and interests that have fallen by the wayside and Good luck with the healing!

speaking of bettas not supposed to be living together, by the end of last year I did a little breeding project for my red galaxy plakats. I traded the males for food in the shop I bought the parents from and kept two of the males that caught my eye and all the fems I kept in my pond as a sorority. Well while feeding my girls last week I spotted one that kinda didn't look female but I shrugged it off thinking I was mistaken, well earlier this morning after feeding I saw it again and decided to catch it and put it in a small tank to check it out. We'll turns out he was male which was surprising because when separated their brood I asked a friend to gelp me so we both missed him and he went on and lived with his sisters XD he didn't make a bubble nest in the pond so I wasn't suspecting anything and he wasn't bullying any of the other live bearers nor his sisters, but for the time being I put him back while trying to think of a plan.

As a nurse, I can't tell you if it's broken, but I can tell you you did a good job! Lol I wish you a speedy recovery! I can recommend hot/cold compress 15 minutes on/off/on or hot/off x 15min/cold/off/hot. Use rolled up towel under shoulder while sleeping on your back. It'll help support your arm. If you're in pain, take your pain meds as prescribed. They've been given to you for a reason. Do your physio as prescribed/tolerated. Be patient! :) and ask your doctor all the questions! Write them down if needed! Lol I'm sure you'll have lots of questions

Yo I've had a shoulder injury for half my life and all I can say is that pillows will be your best friend while you sleep. I use a small pillow under my armpit to help elevate my shoulder and to give me something to rest my arm on. Also bunching up a blanket in front of you to support your arm will make sleeping easier.
Rest up chirs, hope my tips help and you heal fast.

I have broken so many bones, figuring out a good sleeping position is most important, and with collarbone you’ll probably just want to lay on your back. The good thing about a collarbone break is you can probably lose the splint fairly quick. Hope it heals up quick!

Wide necked t shirts are your friend - sore arm goes in first. Take your pain meds, use extra pillows for support to sleep. Wait for the all clear to start the rehab exercises , other arm can do whatever you want if it's comfy enough. Source: husband survived his a few years ago!

QOTW: I’ve broken several, and will happily regale you with the goofy stories that go with them. My 1st was when I broke my nose doing a super-man dive into my bed’s headboard when I was about 5. Just had it adjusted back into place. The 2nd was the distal phalange of my left middle finger. Broke it catching a wet nerf football when I was 12. That was never fixed so it has a lump and is forever slightly bent. My 3rd was when I was hit head on by a car when I was 21. A chip of bone broke away from the proximal phalange in my left pinky and lodged itself in my proximal interphalangeal joint. They had to dig it out, and pin that back in place. It meant my pinky was stuck in the classic “British cup of tea” pose, and I had to have my hand forced into a fist and tied in that position for about 20 minutes 3 times a week for 3 months. After they untied it I had to then flex it a ton. Sometimes using strength training squeeze tools. All to try to regain my range of motion. That hurt, but fun fact your pinky is the finger that basically determines grip strength. Until it was working again I could barely pick up 5lbs. Which wasn’t fun since my 1st daughter was literally born within 12 hours of me getting out of the repair surgery. My 4th, and final break, was when I was bar hopping with my friends at 23. After we called it a night, and were at the hotel, I tried going down a flight of stairs. I was 2 steps up from a landing, and hopped down to the landing. My right ankle rolled (major sprain), my leg caved under me with my knee going out sideways from my body (hyperextended the knee joint and almost tore the cartilage), and then my full body weight landed on top of my right foot snapping all 5 of my metatarsal bones in a straight line like they were twigs. I was drunk enough I was able to hobble back to the room unaided, but 2 hours after I fell asleep the alcohol wore off and I woke up screaming. That actually only required me to wear a soft cast, stay off my feet for like 6-8 weeks, and then take an extended walk for 15-30 minutes daily.

I’ve broken 2 of my fingers in my left hand, I was standing in the sliding door of my moms minivan, I think I was about 5? I had my hands on each side of the door and my mom had the passenger door open. She shut the passenger door on my hand and broke my middle and ring fingers. Luckily it was winter in Buffalo and she was able to stick my hand in the snow while she ran inside for an ice pack. I got a happy meal out of it but my knuckles are quite flat now at 27. Rings that fit the same 2 fingers on my right hand don’t fit on my left.
I also dropped a 300lb dresser on myself a few days ago lifting it into a uhaul 😢 luckily didn’t break any bones, but I’ve got a gnarly bruise on my arm and chest 😅

My brother in law and all 7 siblings have broken multiple bones.... praying for a quick recovery for you ❤‍🩹

Thoughts on Bettas in community tanks:
Bettas, domesticated that is, are descended from a bunch of different populations, but recent genetic research has turned up something really interesting.
At some point, a population of bettas was selectively bred for red pigment and aggression. Different breeds of domesticated bettas are somewhere in a family tree, either north or south of this population bottleneck. Animals that are on the otherside of this bottleneck are documented to be more aggressive and more likely to *stand and fight* instead of *running* when they come into conflict with other fish, particularly other males.
In the wild, bettas (in the Splendens complex) will flare at each other for three primary reasons.
    1) To mate and show off
    2) To threat posture
    3) To *signal* to each other and other species of fish that they are there and getting too close. In black water, flaring is a bit like wearing a reflective vest when taking a walk in bad visual conditions. In the wild, bettas are risk adverse in the vast majority of interactions. This signaling keeps everyone safe from getting bit by each other, and allows time for all parties to safely disengage.
Bettas also have relatively small ranges during nesting season. (Small sections of a massive body of water that has entire trees and dense thickets of jungle vegetation providing natural filtering, don't abuse your fish) that they form and patrol, welcoming females and chasing out males.
In the context of an aquarium, bettas who are closer to their wild counterparts can be kept *together* provided they have extremely dense vegetation that breaks line of sight from other fish, and lower temperatures replicating wet season. They will flare, they will posture, but if one is careful to find less aggressive males, or better yet wild types or close to breeds like aliens and plakats, it is absolutely possible to have multiple males. It's a lot of hassle, and a lot of risk, and not worth it unless the betta keeper is highly experienced and has successfully kept a betta sorority and applied techniques they have learned there. Doing this in a long and low aquarium is essential.

I thankfully have not broken any bones (somehow). My worst injury was when I stepped on an exacto knife! It was when I was pretty young, so I don’t remember it all too well, but it was brutal. I jumped off of the bed onto my moms bag, and she forgot to put the safety cap on her exacto knife… one ER trip later and I was all stitched up!

I have broken so many bones over my 45 years. On separate occasions I broke multiple bones in my hand and then in a foot. Also broken my arm, fractured my skull before and broken ribs on multiple occasions. They all suck, but having my dominant hand in a cast was definitely the most inconvenient.

I have never broken any of my bones, but my worst injury was falling off my bike and being dragged by it down a gravel path. I still have a lot of nerve damage, but thankfully I have full mobility of my knee. When I was recovering I read a lot of fantasy books and tried to help with small tasks in the garden my Papa kept. He let me hold the water hose and pick tomatoes.

I'd initially had hopes about getting some sewing done (i'm a crafter) but my body was stealing so much of my energy to heal i had nothing left. but hey, you can walk! good luck! dont push it too hard, rest and let ur body heal. eat protein.

When I was in high school, I jumped the last 8 steps on a staircase and fractured the arch of my foot. Barely felt it but I would get a little twinge whenever I walked and my folks 'called my bluff' and took me to get an xray. Imagine their surprise when I was actually hurt! Then a couple of years back I got caught in a 5 minute blizzard that laid an inch of ice on the road, and while going down some switchbacks went headlong into a rock wall. Engine moved back about a foot, car started rolling the rest of the way down the hill, and I miraculously walked away from the accident with just the ends of my radius and ulna snapped off. Actually walked, too, the ambulance couldn't get closer than about a half mile from my car and there was too much ice and snow to roll a gurney on lol.
I kept myself occupied watching youtube mostly, couldn't do much else because I live an hour away from the closest town and couldn't drive.

I've broken my collar bone before, and it'll be almost a year before you can do upper body exercises. Bones heal by fusing back together, and with most collar bone injuries it fuses ontop of each other. When it heals, you will notice your shoulder not being as symetrical as before, it will either be lower or higher. It's not that bad, but when you do exercises like benching or shoulder press the form will be a bit different.
Once you get the OK from the doc to do exercises, maybe the first few months stationary bike then the next few months you can incorporate leg exercises. Depending how fast your bones heal, around 4-6 months you can add in leg exercises , 6-8 months add in abb routines.
Taking collagen supplements may help speed up bone healing, do your research and consult with your Doc. But like most docs they don't really do that much research on supplements or home remedies.

Hello! The other day I was at a friend's house while his sister was having a birthday and all of a sudden a bunch of the family's kids come in and one of the little girls has a baby turtle in one of those plastic animal carriers with the brightly colored top, and only a wet paper towel at the bottom. I was absolutely flabbergasted and asked where she got it and she said her yard at home. I think it's actually illegal to have that type of turtle captive in my state. I told her she should let it back into nature or it would surely become extremely stressed and probably die. I think she was surprised I didn't just go "oh cool a turtle" lol

I think the best exercises to do when you have a broken collarbone are probably sit ups, leg lifts and working on your arm that isn't in a sling(depending on whether or not that's painful for you)

Clavicle fractures are no joke…. Especially in adults. You X-ray shows multiple fractures and displacement, so please take it easy. They take months to heal. You want to follow all instructions from your ortho and be religious with that sling. Also, you should use siphon method for all water changes…. Do not do any buckets, even with the other side for some time. Sending best wishes on your recovery from a licensed health care provider in the US.
