@fish for thought I don't know what I'm doing here.....I don't even have fish. Lol. But for some reason I've been binge watching your videos. I do keep plants though so I really appreciate the beauty and life in the fish tanks you feature. As a plant person, I wonder why I only ever see regular pothos at the top of tanks!?!? There are some incredibly beautiful plants, including other pothos such as N'joy and snow queen that would really add a pop to the aesthetics of your tanks! I also want to add, I'm shocked by the size of some of these tanks.....I see them and I think vase or tiny terrarium. Lol.

I was explaining to my dad that goldfish shouldn't be kept in bowls because they will die and he said "no one cares if their goldfish dies anyway"...
On a positive note, he's seen how I've been raising my bettas (one in a 29 gal another in a 10 gal) and said he thought they only needed 1 gallon. When I said the smallest was 5 gallons, he actually respected that.
He doesn't own any fish, but I talk fish at him all the time now after watching FTRs.

Ah yes, I too made the classic mistake of putting a goldfish in a bowl, but I was 15. That poor guy lived for 48 hours, gasping for air all night at the surface. I never felt so bad for a pet like I did that 28 cent goldfish. That taught me the importance of actual tanks with filters & oxygen. Never made that mistake again, never used a bowl again, never bought a goldfish again.

As a parent, I just know that a) you don’t give kids every damn thing they ask for; b) when they ask for a pet, the family needs to bear responsibility for understanding the pet’s care; c) those people are like a fight and a half away from a divorce.

Agree 100%! And when my kids want a pet, I make them research first; give them a list of questions they need to answer (housing, food, lifespan, etc). If they don't care enough to do that, they really don't want the pet.

Single-tailed goldfish can max out at different sizes. It can depend on how they were raised or the conditions they were in before they were sold. 5 years ago I got two single tails that I found dying at the bottom of an almost empty betta cup at Walmart (idk why they were there, I think someone did it as a sick joke)
Anyways I ended up putting them in a 10g which regret so much now, but at the time I didn't know their tank was WAY too small, and it ended up stunting their growth. I later moved them to a 30g which they seemed to have maxed out in. After two years I learned that they needed a much bigger tank, and I did the best I could with my budget.
They are now in a 55g but so far they haven't seemed to have grown any bigger. One is about 7 and a half inches, and the other is almost 6 inches.
For now, the tank is big enough for them, and they are very happy and healthy. I'm going to be keeping them in the 55g unless they start getting bigger. I have plans to set up a big indoor pond for them in the next couple of years. But I'm pretty sure they are maxed out.
Even though I failed in the past with those fish, I still love them and I never want anything bad to happen to them. It makes me so sad to see people like the ones in the first clip treat beautiful fish like that

I still can't keep any type of anubias alive for more than a few weeks, so I cry inside when everyone recommends it as a "bulletproof" plant that's "impossible to kill". Idek. It takes a lot of trail and error.

This makes me glad that I did as much research as I could to get my first and probably only tank. I made sure they got more than enough space and got some Glowlight Tetras (the black ones with the orange stripes) yes the neons were more pretty but I heard they are inbred to heck and back and have a high death rate no matter how much you try. Months in they are thriving and even live with a single neon in their school since he had been the only neon in the store left and he'd been swimming around with the glowlights. He and his glowlight buddies are thriving so far, got them the best food, plenty of hiding places, floating plants etc. I have even spotted breeding behavior in them which tends to signify they are well fed and needs are met too. I really can't wrap my head around people buying fish and treating them more like toys/decorations.

I figured as soon as he asked about a vase he would have been bringing home a Betta Fish. Obviously a vase would still be way too small, but it would have been less egregious than three Goldfish in the same container.

My family had 3 goldfish when I was a kid, we kept them in a tank that was probably about 2.5 - 5 gallons (don’t remember the exact size cause I was about 8 years old) with a filter and plants. First and last fish we ever had but we kept them well for years with no pretty much problems (my little brother fed my fish a fried egg and it died, but he was trying to be nice 😭) and eventually gave them away to a good home when we could no longer care for them. I have some empathy for people who are ignorant about fish care if they’re willing to try to do better, but there isn’t much excuse when a family with 3 children who live in the middle of nowhere and have no internet can still accommodate fish properly.

I thought those fish were frozen too, it’s the only thing that makes sense to me, but look carefully and you’ll see a couple of them moving around in the background… that just makes it even weirder
Frozen fish feels almost shrimp circle and cory cult levels of creepy

I was at petsmart yesterday, i was looking at the at the betta fish. There was a mother and daughter looking at them as well. The mother was oh look these i beautiful im gonna grab one. The daughter asked where you going to keep it. The mum points to the bottom shelf and says I'll grab one of these bowls. 😢 my heart just broke for that fish.

When I was in middle school, I had a tank with gold fish. The tank was doing pretty good, but then I added plecos to help clean it. It all went to hell, no matter how much cleaning I did it would get extra dirty fast. All the gold fish died because the water wasn’t right. The plecos survived. What did I learn? Never put a pleco in a tank to clean it. especially when your tank isn’t big enough to add any extra fish. I also learned, research in advance before you get any type of pet. Also research during. And don’t be afraid to ask professionals questions.

I have worked at multiple fish stores now and usually the goldfish stay still from a very cold water change. Often fish stores are kept around 80 degrees so the goldfish tanks naturally get there each night. Then the next day they are given 50-60 degree water again in the morning to help keep their metabolism down for feeder goldfish purposes…. Kind of cruel but they go into a borderline shock state where they barely can move as they adjust to the 20-30 degree adjustment their body has to. Just another reason to train your fish to take pelletized or frozen food if you can

My fish at work, are always up and ready for their breakfast when I arrive. Maybe they turn off the electrics at night and have not realised that the fish are already used to this and compensate by being less active when air flow and filtration shuts down?

I told some people in my class that I've had my fish for 6 years. They assumed my parents just replaced it every day 💀
I had three, one died at about 1 year, then at 5 years, and the last one I still have today. They must assume that I shove three large goldfish into a Tupperware container or something 💀

I used to keep hornwort in my fish tank but my beta didn't agree with where I had put it so I think he thought he would try aquascaping himself also the goldfish at that pet shop were in Torpor aka they were hibernating because it was too cold for them they usually do this in the wintertime but don't worry they will be back to normal in the spring.

2:52 My little brother has had crabs for a long while now he keeps his crabs properly for some years now and I've watched him take care of them now I am getting a crab and it will be homed in a nice 40 gallon tank and with the species of crab being mostly small and freshwater crabs the 40 gallon is a perfect size. Not to mention the crabs we keep are native and are really hardy near to impossible to kill they live in our DRAINS.
