I’m amazed by the projects you complete on the boat while your moored out at sea. You must have a hidden workshop in the bilge. All the tools and boats supplies where do you have room to store that stuff. The enclosure project looks great. Heck, it would have taken me 3 months of going on and off the boat to measure, stitch, and cut. Oh, I’m still wearing my elements t shirt very proudly that I got from y’all.

Nice job on the dodger! A lot of work that wasn't shown. I sewed my own dodger with Sunbrella and vinyl two winters ago so I can only imagine. Literally took me three months to complete, cause sometimes I had to walk away. Don't think I'd do another one but I am proud of accomplishing it. Sail safe.
😂 Back in 2010 just after we bought our Sabre I had to replace the vinyl. I was working on it in the guest room of our house and it still took me four months to do because I hated the project so much.
When you get to Ireland, id consider adding a hard windshield to that dodger made out of 3/8" lexan, the upside of doing that is you can get windshield wipers. I have em on my boat and love having them in the fog and the muck! Of course I have a full hard dodger which is really great for keeping dry! I can take an 8' wave over the bow and stay completely dry! Looking forward to seeing the Europe Adventure!

Even the cheapest dinghy (ours) needs to be locked up down here. We bought the 30ft Masterlock cable in 2010 and it's been in use since then. It's been used and abused and still going strong. I highly recommend it. Matt

Recommend you run a ribbon of fabric over the edge of the vinyl on the trailing edges of the enclosure to add a little reinforcement -- that is the most vulnerable area as well as the area that will have the most traffic.
Exactly what we ended-up doing. I had a white sail tie on board and we cut that down to support the leading edge. But, being cheap webbing, that is the only part that has been affected by UV so far. Matt

I'm amazed at how much people are paying for those sunken boats. WAAAAY more than they are worth. I was basically given a 43 foot monohull back in 2002. I spent 7 years and about $40K working on it. AND way more time than I want to know. All the while I wasn't able to sail because all my time and energy and days off were spent working on the thing. When it was all "done" (able to put in the water), I had a boat worth about $35K. I mean ... I loved it. It was an awesome project. But I wouldn't do it again.
Yup. Same conclusion we've come to after spending two plus years working on this boat. We get a lot of emails from people asking if they too should rebuild an old boat... our standard reply is NO. If you're doing it thinking you'll save money, it's a really bad idea with low success rate. We didn't go into our rebuild thinking we'd save money; we did it for the experience and to learn some new skills, but it was financial and mentally draining nonetheless. The only people we've seen successful are ones that buy a wrecked boat and put minimal work into it to go sailing. They are not risk adverse or just don't know enough to be worried. I envy them sometimes :) Matt
Josef yep. Big mistake. I didn’t finish it. The interior still needed a LOT of work. So it’s only worth what someone is will to pay. It would most likely been worth a lot more finished. But the real mistake was thinking I would save money fixing up a bigger boat and having a live aboard for a home. I’d have been better off chucking up the money for a boat that was “ready” to go.
@@tna2me197 Ah, yes, I was thinking you had finished it. I'm planning to put $100k into a cleaner boat rather than put 50k into a fixer upper. Ain't got time for project boats.
Hi guys. I’m just searching back in time as I remembered the nice hard top dodger you have and the cool side temp curtains you were building in these vids. Nice job on the dodger cover guys. I'm curious to see how long you used it. Sure is clear while no saltwater has hit it. Did it gum up pretty quick? KEEP ON, SAILIN ON. cheers, RJ
Shockingly, the UV and salt have had no effect on the vinyl yet. We've lost a few stitches, but its survived a few months and 2,000 plus miles so far. We're taking it down to do the real Strataglass soon, but the stuff up currently will be recycled into a way to close the back of the dodger off when in cold climates. Matt
We are about 5 months into having it up and a few thousand miles and it has held up extremely well. Very little stretch and no UV degradation. We're finally at the point of doing the permanent vinyl (strataglass), so unfortunately, the experiment with cheap stuff will be ending. Matt
Hi Guys. Not sure if ye are in Ireland yet. I'm in Cork in Southern Ireland and would love to have a meet n greet. Also if you need a ride to wherever I would be more than happy to help. Sean

I knew someone would bring up that lack of seamanship :) We haul the dinghy out of the water with a halyard at night- the fender protects the dinghy from abradding on the aluminum haul. It's always secured to the side deck, but just happened to roll off this time. Matt
Ha ha I tried to be gentle ;-) If it makes you feel better I untied after lunch one weekend and dumped the dock line on the windscreen of our ski boat while I pulled out the dock and got us sorted. 3 minutes later and at cruise speed down the lake I thought to myself ‘now where did the line go?’ Needless to say west marine took more of my money.
Hi Herby and Maddie! We're currently on Sao Miguel, but will probably sail back to Terceria in December. Good luck with your boat work on the hard, ours is yet to come. 🙂
@@RiggingDoctor Our visas are up on Jan 1st, so we're heading to Thailand for three months (the cheapest cost of living place we could find) to reset our clock. We then need to do a bottom job and get prepped for heading North in late April. Where are you heading in the spring? What marina are you guys in? Quick question- Do you happen to know the cost for jack stand rental? I've tried getting info from both Praia and Angra, but haven't been able to get a price on the stand rental when we haul out. Thanks, Matt
We are in Angra. Yard and stands is about €5 per day (at the daily rate). It’s the same guy that rents them in both. When you get here, the marina manager will call and coordinate with them, then in a few days, he will show up and haul you out. Calling ahead does nothing for the timeline. It takes a little time but they will get you squared away nicely here. Praia apparently has some crime issues in the marina but Angra has a guard that patrols and we haven’t had any issues. In the spring or early summer, we’re heading to Portugal. We’re going to fly around the islands over winter while we are on the hard. When are you guys coming to Terceira? Herby
@@RiggingDoctor - Thanks so much for the info on the stand rental. We heard it wasn't cheap, but had no idea if it made it worthwhile to haul out here or in Terceira. Also, good to know about the issues of theft in Praia. Were boats getting broken into, or was it simple stuff being taken off the boats? We plan on staying in Ponta until early Dec then heading back to Angra... unfortunately, that seems to correspond with when you're fling back to the states. Matt
Hi Bill! The few times we've given Georgie to friends while being away from our boat, she does a great job. Usually the first day we're gone she'll sit by their companionway and cry....or hide. But then she starts to feel comfortable, begins roaming, cuddling, and by the end she acts like she's queen of the new person's boat.
So....I have to ask.....did the temporary dodger make it? Unless you had the smoothest crossing ever I have some doubts. It was however a great effort so I hope it made a good template.
We gave up on wintering in the U.K. We were all set to leave for Ireland in August but then decided we didn't want to sit through a cold and wet winter in the north. We'll still be making our way to northern mainland Europe in the spring.

@@williamdykes2750 "what's next...a sheet trailing in the water?" That is why we check each side deck to make sure no lines are in the water before we start the engine. You only make that mistake once :) Matt
You’re both great, feel sorry that Ruby Rose feel the need to pull you both down. Not necessary as your channel is great and I love your videos. Sorry Nick, not Teresa, as she is such a dignified lady and never says anything discourteous, but you are out of order in dissing M J Sailing.
Ruby Rose, and Nick, were not pulling us down at all. Nick stated a fact that Terysa and I discuss frequently and in depth....numbers vs engagement and TH-cam algorithms. We're both each other's support system through videos and social media, and anything related to putting our lives out there for everyone to see. If, as two sailing channels, we were not as close personally as we happened to be and I thought someone was making comments about us without really knowing us or our story then the comment Nick made could possibly be perceived as rude. But...he just happened to put out in a live chat what we're always talking about among ourselves anyway.
Annette Bates Nick here. Firstly apologies if this came across as pulling Matt and Jessica down. This genuinely was not my intent. We as sailing channels are close friends and so would never say anything derogatory about them. The point I was trying to make (albeit badly) is that if you increase your subscriber numbers through click bait, you end up with new subscribers that won’t watch future episodes. They are just there for salacious content. So by example, you have 50k subscribers and get 25k views on average per video. You then acquire (either through click bait or worse buying subs) 50k more subscribers. You now have 100k subscribers, but you are still getting 25k views per video. Effectively you half your engagement rate. It’s not good for the channel. Hope this clears it up. I now will make sure I buy both Matt and Jessica even more beer when they drag themselves away from South East Asia and we get to meet up. Fair winds
MJ Sailing in my defence how could I know whether you know each other? I watch all your respective videos and I’ve not seen you meet up, as with The Wynns for example. Nor have I heard any one of you referring to this friendship. If I had then maybe it could be identified as harmless banter. I was in fact supporting you both as a regular viewer and admirer.
Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose hi Nick and Teresa. Thanks for your reply, I think if you read my answer to MJ Sailing you will see where I was coming from. In all honesty I am a bit of a spontaneous speaker so I do get it. Sometimes we need to engage the brain first (Nick). I do get on well with “say it as it is” people as you generally know where you stand. Glad you cleared up the fact that you are friends and it was harmless banter. Teresa - keep on doing what you do, you’re a darling. Thanks for the apology but not needed now I understand. You two are an interesting combination xxx from the UK
In last Sunday's Detroit News there was a 3 page article on young female women being raped by the locales in Jamaica . Have you ever run across anything like these in your travels?
Poor women! I haven't read the story, and I wish her well on the recovery from that horrible experience. Luckily, we haven't been exposed to the darker side of any of the places we visit. We sailed to Jamaica in 2012 and it is one of the few places we didn't feel comfortable. The locals in Port Antonio were extremely aggressive and unwelcoming. We will try to avoid going back. Being an old married couple saves us from a lot of those experience. Most important rule we have that keeps us out of trouble; If any doubt about the environment we are in, we do not go out at night. Since we aren't trying to score drugs, sexual hook-ups or anything else, it makes it easier to avoid trouble. Matt

@@tna2me197
Ah, yes, I was thinking you had finished it. I'm planning to put $100k into a cleaner boat rather than put 50k into a fixer upper. Ain't got time for project boats.
one thing alla you adventure channels miss that i would love to see is some manner of date/ time in there somewhere
This video was shot at least 5 months ago. They crossed the Atlantic in July.
Hi guys. I’m just searching back in time as I remembered the nice hard top dodger you have and the cool side temp curtains you were building in these vids. Where did you purchase or did you construct the hard top? I have rewatched Project Atticus as they built their own. I like the fact that yours is supported by Stanton’s. Thanks in advance.

Matt
Chili Cheese Dogs for the Win!
Please post how the vinyl does through the trip. Does is stretch with time and/or tighten up in cold weather.
Sean
Thanks for the kind offer Sean, but we decided to stay in the Azores for winter. We were provisioned and ready to leave for Ireland at the end of Aug, but after talking it over, realised the mild weather of the Azores would be worth the trouble come springtime vs. wintering in the UK. We may hit Ireland on our way North in Spring, or may just go up the coast of mainland Europe to Norway and save Ireland until late summer on the way back down.
Thanks again,
Matt
Hi Sean, my last name is Cronin...they tell me it is a very common name in County Cork, is that so?
@@MAGAisacult the name Cronin is very popular in Cork and Kerry. I'm not sure where it comes from originally. My name for instance hails from Tipperary although quite common in Cork. Where are you from?
@@phdconstructioncork Thanks! Hope to visit someday! Wonderful country, great people!
@@phdconstructioncork Oh, I am in USA, Florida now. Came from NE USA, NY/Boston, quite a few Cronin's there, descendants of late 1800-1900 immigrants.
Eat the chili dogs! Tell the nanny viewers to mind their own beeswax...you don't need that negativity in ur life! :D
You need a Yesterdog!
@@hottubz1965 100% I can't wait to get back to GR and have about 10 Yesterdogs.

Totally agree! Passage-making food is all about comfort food and stuff that's easy to prepare. Go the chilli dawgs! Eat fruit and greens for fibre and nutrition but don't skimp on what makes you happy.
Did you manage to catch .. Follow The Boat .. and their dodger project ....
I feel bad for that fender @ 430!
I knew someone would bring up that lack of seamanship :) We haul the dinghy out of the water with a halyard at night- the fender protects the dinghy from abradding on the aluminum haul. It's always secured to the side deck, but just happened to roll off this time.
Matt
Ha ha I tried to be gentle ;-)
If it makes you feel better I untied after lunch one weekend and dumped the dock line on the windscreen of our ski boat while I pulled out the dock and got us sorted. 3 minutes later and at cruise speed down the lake I thought to myself ‘now where did the line go?’
Needless to say west marine took more of my money.
I noticed too! but kept my yap shut. LOL
Love me some Hormel with beans chili cheese dogs.
Cool setup!
We are also in the Azores (Terceira) doing some upgrades while we are on the hard.
Which island are you guys on?
Herby and Maddie
Hi Herby and Maddie! We're currently on Sao Miguel, but will probably sail back to Terceria in December. Good luck with your boat work on the hard, ours is yet to come. 🙂
We are heading to the states before December 1st because our visa runs out and will be back in early January. Will you guys still be here then?
@@RiggingDoctor Our visas are up on Jan 1st, so we're heading to Thailand for three months (the cheapest cost of living place we could find) to reset our clock. We then need to do a bottom job and get prepped for heading North in late April.
Where are you heading in the spring?
What marina are you guys in? Quick question- Do you happen to know the cost for jack stand rental? I've tried getting info from both Praia and Angra, but haven't been able to get a price on the stand rental when we haul out.
Thanks,
Matt
Matt
And the one thing I want to know...is Georgie ok after being on a strange boat for 10 days? Please update. Thanks. Bill, on Koh Samui, Thailand.
Hi Bill! The few times we've given Georgie to friends while being away from our boat, she does a great job. Usually the first day we're gone she'll sit by their companionway and cry....or hide. But then she starts to feel comfortable, begins roaming, cuddling, and by the end she acts like she's queen of the new person's boat.
Great work! Does Meijer have a store in the area?
Man, I wish! It's one of the things we often talk about missing from Michigan.
Matt
Eat all the chilli dogs you want, screw the haters and trolls!!!
We do love a good chili cheese dog. 😉
So....I have to ask.....did the temporary dodger make it? Unless you had the smoothest crossing ever I have some doubts. It was however a great effort so I hope it made a good template.
A few months and a few thousand miles and the vinyl is still doing fine.
Matt
Looks like you are still in the Azores. Did you give up mainland Europe?
We gave up on wintering in the U.K. We were all set to leave for Ireland in August but then decided we didn't want to sit through a cold and wet winter in the north. We'll still be making our way to northern mainland Europe in the spring.
Sorry Jessica, Matt was right saying Saba (Sahbah) not Saba as in (Sabre)
You say Potarto, I'll say Potato etc😁
I don’t think they’re concerned about how to say names correctly when they insist on saying St. Mar-in all the time.
Update on the eggs don't wash them they have a film on them that will keep for up to 3 months
We're u going in the uk or u already there I'm near Liverpool
We actually put Ireland and UK on hold until next year, opting to spend our winter in the more tepid climate of the Azores. 🙂
MJ Sailing it's crap here cold wet and windy its getting us back for having such a nice summer 😫
I've never had a chilli cheese dog....

A fender?? You guys left a fender out?? WTH??? LOL......
Yeah, yeah, yeah :) We haul the dinghy out of the water with a halyard at night- the fender protects the dinghy from abradding on the aluminum haul. It's always secured to the side deck, but just happened to roll off this time.
Matt
I know I'm being tacky, but I was thinking the same thing....kind of like "gotcha"..but, you two have done a lot more sailing than I have. So, we'll forgive the occasional harmless mistake, but my God, M & J, what's next...a sheet trailing in the water?
@@williamdykes2750 "what's next...a sheet trailing in the water?" That is why we check each side deck to make sure no lines are in the water before we start the engine. You only make that mistake once :)
Matt
Of course, I was being completely tongue-in-cheek. You two rock.
Looks damn Good ‼️👍👍. Stay Safe. Use Safety Lines when crossing ‼️ Vinny 🇺🇸
Am a little worry you guys are not eating real meals.
If you like chili cheese dogs then ear them. Screw them and what they think
Matt
Yea that’s not 35$
i smart person would have built a dodger back in the states...lol. just saying
Nice job. You guys are awesome.
