Laura, what an amazing woman and now with an incredible family truly living the dream. Thank you Kika and Dan for providing this window into their lives.
Back when those lawsuits were going on it was all over the media here in the Netherlands and everyone had an opinion. Funny thing, every sailor I knew (including my dad who sailed around the world) thought she should go if she wanted to, most people who were really against it had never sailed.
I remember watching it in the news here in the U.S. and them giving updates when she checked in at different points. It seemed like most Americans thought it was pretty neat that a young teenager was going to do it.
But still, it's a 14 year old girl alone, circumnavigating the world. And it's a big world, with a lot of crazy people. And she could encounter a lot of problems alone, 14 years old. But, who am i to judge, at 14 years of age, i still did my weekly paper round, complaining about cleaning my room, and fixing my own bike.
@@PSimonsen in the interview she explains how her 6 year old knows how everything works on the boat, and when you see the images of him hoisting sails you believe that, picture that boy 8 years older, always on boats. Laura did exactly the same it appears, as she says in the video "born on a boat, grew up in a boat, never lived on land for more than months, helped build boats, fix up boats, loan boats, sail boats, talk boats" .... by 14 years of age she was way ahead of people twice her age. B. on dealing with crazy people here is a link with an interview where you see more about how she thinks, at 8, at 14 and after. th-cam.com/video/ArzDw830MIc/w-d-xo.html
What a great interview! I love that you got to share Ms Dekker's continuing story. I remember watching the movie about her with my kids. Her early life is such an empowering and supporting story and how great is it that she's still bringing that to the new generations! Thank you Dan and Kikka! You're such great interviewers.
Lovely to see this get together of some of my favorite sailors. Laura has certainly charted a unique course in life as have you as well. I found myself smiling throughout so much of this video. Thank you for the visit.
I really loved this video this week. I am an old sailor and to see young people inspired like this and so knowledgeable in sailing just made my day. Tight lines and trim sails mates.
Watched the Laura Decker Documentary several times. Was very inspiring to see a young girl circumnavigate. Seeing her with a family and still sailing is just incredible to me. This might be my favorite Sailing Uma episode to date and that says a lot considering how good your content has been for years now.
That was an amazing interview! Thank you so much. I read up on Laura and I am so fascinated by her character. I'd totally trust her with my daughter's life once she's old enough.
Same! ❤ Laura’s life story led me to Delos then Vaga & Uma… and the years sailed on and on, more and more sailing channels have become my teachers & touchpoint to my dreams! ⛵️ ☀️ 🌊
Sick! Laura movie/documentary was my first taste of sailing (via screen lol), and just a few days after seeing it I saw my first Uma video about Dan surviving that tornado on board! Then ofc went directly to chapter one and started watching Uma from the beginning, so cool seeing you together!
I watched Laura's self made documentary about her circumnavigation of the world on her you tube channel and I was mind blown that such a young woman could pull that off!! I believe it was seven parts. It is a must watch for anyone who hasn't seen it!! Great to see you got to meet her!! She is a very inspirational person, and she has become a very beautiful woman!
I had been following sailing and cruising since my parents and I lived on boats in the late 70s early 80s. I followed Laura's story pretty much from the beginning of the court issues. It was national news. I'm so proud of her now and thanks for sharing this update!
I'm so in awe of Laura it just feels surreal seeing her relax with other sailors I only know at a distance, with her family, with her plans, with her school, etc.. The feeling of awe is special as it makes you really take in everything you can about a person. What a lovely family and life she's made, it makes me very very happy.
What a great segment. I remember when Laura's case was before the courts and it made the world headlines. Parents don't willingly put their children in harms way and Laura having sailed all of her life was well experienced in the sailing craft. Her story is well worth showing to the world the out come of this adventure. Now other youngsters can make the adventure through their sailing school. Doesn't get better than that. Great video by the UMA crew.👍
I remember it very vividly as well. But as much as I understand that the entire legal battle was very hard on Laura's part I also understand the courts for looking into it very carefully and not letting her go just like that.. In general... there are very valid reasons why 14 year olds are usually not left without supervision or guidance of a parent/adult, let alone for more than a year and out on the ocean. If she would have died everyone would have been quick to blame her parents and the Dutch state for allowing her to go. And in the end it was just about setting a world record.. if it was mostly about travelling the world she could have done it four years later without any issues or resistance.
Laura Dekker is an inspirational New Zealander! Thank you for this update. It is so great to see her doing well and living a good life of service, love and adventure! I think we will see many great things from her yet!
I got lucky to see you as a main attraction at a conference I attended in Denver a few years ago... And, now I'm a fulltime liveaboard retired and never been happier... Got-for-it Laura...
Two of my heroes meet a third of my heroes and a fourth hero appears - goosebumps! I'm so happy you know each other and share your amazing experiences! You're such accomplished sailors! It's one thing to go blue-water sailing for an extended period of time, but to master all the crafts needed to restore and maintain a sailboat in addition to being that kind of a sailor is really, really impressive! Well done! ❤
Thank you for sharing a beautiful story of a family sharing their own story of sailing, very much like yourselves, giving us an insight into how those who love the sea continue to delight us with your love and enjoyment with others who share there own story. Keep doing what you have been, giving those of us who love the sea and adventure, a life we will never have. Thank you Alan
I love her story and the documentary. I tell people about it all the time. I got really stoked to watch this. Love to hear she's still out living her dream , sailing, and passing on the passion.
Thanks for sharing. I followed Laura and her adventure. Its so great to see what she’s doing now and she’s still living the sailing life with her own family.
Your absolute best episode in the 5+ years we have watched you. EXCELLENT job of interviewing Laura, Kika. Dan obviously linked up well with the fellows. Loved it.
Amazing you met up with Laura. We have followed her from the beginning and have vicariously enjoyed her travels and success. Very heartwarming to hear of her program for young girls. Thank you for this great interview with her new family and boat.
Solo circumnavigated at age 14! I feel inspired. Their boat, a work in progress, is fabulous. I really like ketch-rigged boats for a number of reasons: balanced sail plan, less stressed spars, and redundancy should one spar fail. I haven’t seen a catamaran that is ketch-rigged, but it would seem to be a solid way to go for larger cats. Anyway, this was a very interesting interview and tour.
Is that the same 38 foot ketch she had to get to continue her around the world journey? Dan said "77" at one point but I missed the info about shifting from one boat to this seemingly larger one.
Such an amazing family interview ! ! Thanks for including this in your truck travels adventure. From time to time, I've wondered what's up in Laura Dekker's world. Now I know. That in one amazing story. I couldn't be more impressed with what Laura's doing.
This was an amazing episode. How she started as a very young sailor, sailing around the world by herself and now she a mother with 2 children. I think one day dan and kika will be great parents
What a superb film! The years seem to have flown by following both your and Laura's adventures. The video covered both the human and technical sides very well, the reconstruction projects are both massive and so professional. What a wonderful childhood for the boys.
O-o-o very cool interview👍👍👍!!! Today are no more children like she, my nephew doesn't want to go half a mile to the store! I always give him Laura as an example! My big respect to Laura!🫶 Someday I will build a yacht!
What a nice interview of a special sailing couple! And as a Dutch person I was kind of proud of Laura who then sailed around the world. Look up her videos of her solo journey, truly incredible!
What a phenomenal young lady. Absolutely terrific that she's already sharing her experience and knowledge with younger folks. So important to learn life skills and get off of social media.
An awesome interview Kika. Dan the kids loved you! More like this please. Great to see you showcase Lauras work, she is an inspiration to young people.

The ability to work closely together is a great gift for children, particularly for those who don't get a chance in the school system. Welkom in Nederland! And thank you for introducing us to this amazing woman! And the old Martin Sheen jacket flip!! And showing off people changing the world, one crew at a time. It's Hope-full.
From Australia in one stretch to South Africa. I wanted to be at sea for a longer time. So peaceful. Not shit, Laura, I know which storms you encountered. I read your book. You made the local fisherman in Cape Town look green around the nose. I followed you from the moment you went up and down to England at 13. You're seriously tough!
Great episode. I knew of Laura's impressive sailing resume of course, but hadn't been following her closely. Lovely family, impressive refit, I'd love to be a young teen on a cruise with them! Thanks for this.

An awesome interview Kika. Dan the kids loved you! More like this please. Great to see you showcase Lauras work, she is an inspiration to young people.
Denk dat veel mensen zich helemaal niet realiseren wat een prestatie ze heeft geleverd destijds, respect voor deze hele slimme dame!
Laura, I am so happy for you. I wonder where have you been? I followed your trip, read your book, etc. You overcame all adversities… so much GRIT, perseverance…. Your knowledge in sailing and boats…is so invaluable to boat designer, sailing….. great inspiration. Thanks Kika n Dan
What a great episode! Great sailing family, very inspirational. I can see why you’d both be so drawn to them. Thanks for bringing this to us all!
i am so pleased to see this type of involvement. i wish her every success and happiness for many many years to come :)
Thank you so much for this interview, it was so cool. Laura Dekker is a hero of mine, I have been following her story since she first wanted to circumnavigate the world, then I heard she was granted permission and followed every bit if information I could. I have so much respect for her what she has done and what they are doing now. But I wish Laura would post much more regular video's of there progress and longer ones.
Such a beautiful boat and living space. It was cool to see her family and how her life and purpose has evolved since her circumnavigation. 😎
Brilliant interview. Thanks.
Wow, Laura is amazing, great interview !
Watched this episode on my own boat in Den Osse Netherlands where Laura's dad had his ship for several years. Spoke to Laura on a couple of occasions when hauling out. Her dad used to operate the crane and she and I would scrape of the barnacles. Don't know if I would have liked my son doing the same thing as Laura at that age but then again they're quite different types.
What an amazing and inspirational woman. So balanced with a lovely family. Great interview.

The only time that I recall seeing a child riding a bicycle in a life jacket!
It is a little early for them to worry but I learned, as a teen, never give a teenager a room with their own exit! Much trouble arises forthwith.
So nice to see Laura again. What an amazing woman.
Thank you so much. We love your work and this was an unexpected surprise!
Oh wow what an amazing step!
I have to say your vlogs are so fascinating and fun to watch.
Cheers from Southern California USA 🇺🇸 ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I love that you guys are/were in the Netherlands again and I really admire Laura.
Thanks!
Very good interview, both the interviewer and interviewee.
What an awesome chat! Thanks for sharing!!
Well done, Laura Dekker!
It is amazing to see all these sailing stories come together and to hear how far she has come since that Netflix episode featured her and when she made her epic journey! Also kind of like sailing bubbles and how Delos cross paths with him! When you look at the rolling credits at the end, you will see their name in the credits.
I saw the dokementry aboute Laura many many years agoe.
And was amazed then aboute her sailing competence at 14yrs old.
Wonderd what hapend to her after that.

I am impressed - by Laura and Family and by condensing all that life into this beautiful video.
Great episode. I am a big fan of Laura. She is so down to earth. Very happy that she and her family have found their space.
What an amazing interview with Kika, Dan and Laura.I am an old guy living in Cape Town but I was born in Amsterdam in 1942, so I am quite a bit older than all of you.
SO neat to see what she’s up to. I followed her journey when she was a kid.
the episode made me smile; i enjoyed watching the videos about her journey.
I soooo enjoyed this interview! I would watch Laura with anything she does! She’s amazing! Love everything about her 🌟🤩🌟
