    I use silicone on my hull and propspeed on the running gear. Saves a ton of time cleaning and I get an extra half knot due to the super slippery surface. I think it’s the best thing in bottom coatings since canned beer.

      I don't know if it is the amount of work, so much as how intolerant they are of neglect. So you have to actually DO the work. Also, while it wasn't the case with this episode specifically, a large portion of the work they show was stuff that they probably wanted to do as part of the original refit, except they got to the point where they just needed to get out of the yard.

    Matt I really do think that your application of a silicon based product will help for the prop especially. Typically silicon based antifouling products do need some speed to work effectively, and well as you said your boat just doesn't have the legs for running at the speeds that paint would like. The prop though would have lots of water flow over it's surface so as long as you actually use the prop on occasion the stuff should come off. I'll be watching with interest the SeaJet as I had at one point been interested in the product. It fell off my radar as I just don't hear much about the company, but will try and visit their website to get the scoop on their products. A lot of the wide shots feature Georgie supervising all the work going on...

    A few questions for Matt - what is hard growth, is it a plant or animal? What would happen to elements if you used coppercoat? Notice loads of bottom job videos recently, is there a time of year to do it or was it coincidence?

    • @mattjohnson6716
      @mattjohnson6716 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some paints (typically hard non ablative) can only be out of the water for a short period of time before they start to lose their effectiveness. For boats that are hauled every winter, it then makes sense to paint before launching in spring instead of right when you pull the boat in fall. Beside that, I can't think of any other reason that you'd see more videos posted now.
      Coppercoat would cause galvanic corrosion with our aluminum hull. Some are now advocating a thick epoxy barrier coat and then copper paints, but I'm still a bit leery of this process. I'd rather paint more often than risk the chance of eating away our hull :)
      We had a lot of slime on the hull the entire two years... this is plant based and this paint was horrible at stopping this. The hard growth were small shelled animals trying to hitch a free ride on Elements.... maybe 1 ever 6 square inches. It wasn't as bad as the zebra mussels we'd get back in Michigan or the barnacles from the caribbean, so I'd consider the paint successful at preventing hard growth.

    • @mattjohnson6716
      @mattjohnson6716 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The bottom paint did go on blatchy with the first coat. A lot of it was the large roller and uneven surface of the metal boat, but it was also the paints thickness and fast drying that made it a bit more difficult than some others I've used.

    i would of let the primer and everything sit much longer between coats (no sun) and sanded it down a little between coats to make it smoother. it was fun to watch you both work while georgie supervised from the top. then watch matt work while jessie took her mandatory union break.

      i dunno what you used at that company? according to the sealjet companies specs it say that.
      sealjet primer 015, surface dry 15min-40+mins, min overcoating interval 2-5hours, maxium overcoating interval none. source www.seajetpaint.com/en/products/primer/seajet-015-underwater-prime
      so they recommend to wait 2-5 hours depending on the weather conditions before applying an overcoat. matt waited the appropriate time according to the manufacturer and a little more. i myself would wait longer due to it being on the bottom. thats me i would of also taped out the area where the stands were so its they come out as nice boxes to work on later to prime/paint when they are moved the next day.

      We heard the dent was from a hurricane way before we bought the boat. The forward keel was damaged with a much larger dent, but we cut that out during the rebuild process.... the remaining dent is in a diesel tank and we didn't want to deal with the issues there so kept it.

      We had the yard hang our boat in the travel lift overnight and we painted the spots. It's not the recommended time between coats, but we've never seen the paint fail because of this in these spots. It was a dent supposedly caused by bottoming during a hurricane before we bought it. The dent is in one of the diesel tanks, so hard to repair without major surgery.... we decided to was just fine the way it was. When we bought the boat, it also had a much larger dent in the forward keel from the same event. This was cut out and replaced.

    • @mattjohnson6716

      We originally used Pettit Aluma Protect (two coats), which is a zinc chromate primer, followed by 4-5 coats of Interlux interprotect. But we've had better luck with just the Interprotect on freshly ground aluminum, so used just that in these spots.
      Interlux used to advise doing a conversion coat (alodine and alumaprep) before priming with Interprotect, but they've found that they get good results with just the primer. We did the alodine treatment for half the hull and see no difference there either. Time will tell.

      I hadn't heard of Seajet before I started researching the copper free paints late last year. But everyone in the yard from Europe knew the brand and had good things to say... I hope they break into the US market.

    Love it when they offer to give it for free! Its good that companies recognise the power of social media and advertising.
    So do you literally wait till the end and move the supports at the end and do all the priming and coating just on those spots or move them as you go?

      We actually cover that at the beginning of the next episode, but in this case the marina put us in the travel lift the night before we launched. That gave us the opportunity to access and paint areas that had previously been covered by the jackstands and straps.

      I've seen even within the US some states are going away from copper (Washington). I don't know how much damage the recreational market does, but free of any heavy metals must be good.

      @@mattjohnson6716 I believe Marina Del Ray marina in Los Angeles, Ca chased out ablative paints. I have copper paint on my boat in Long Beach Ca. Some guys in Southern California go to Ensenada Mexico to get the old school, really toxic stuff. It works great but is terrible for the ecosystem.

    Hi guys...look, I've been watching MJ Sailing for a long time (obviously I have enjoyed your content in the past - I'm still watching), but I have noticed a LOT of just you two talking into the camera lately (e.g. it was almost 10 minutes into this episode before there was any content other than you two talking into the camera). You are both charming, but...maybe more content, and less chatter? Or chatter over video of something actually being done or happening? Just a thought...
