Angry Video Game Nerd (AVGN) episode 186: Taito Legends. These Taito compilations are for the PlayStation 2 and include 68 games total. (Volume 1 came with 29 games and Volume 2 has a bunch more, with 39 games.) Extra features include interviews with some of the game designers, original sales flyers, and arcade cabinet art, but most of those are in Volume 1. Some of the collection includes: Space Invaders, The Newzealand Story, Bubble Bobble, Jungle Hunt, and a ton of Taito's shooters, fighters, platformers, and puzzle games.

Apparently Lick Joe's name is a mistranslation and he's supposed to be Rick Joe, which makes way more sense. Still, the mistranslated name is pure gold.
its mainly because the letter L doesnt really exist in japan. They usually use R instead. Because its hard to tell whats an actual R, and whats replacing an L, it's common for Ls to always be used.

Fan from Japan here. The snake like enemy in KikiKaikai is a monster (Yokai) from Japanese folklore that’s a woman with a long neck and is often called RokuroKubi. The title of the game KikiKaikai roughly translates to Mysterious World of Monsters

For decades, I remember seeing Gladiator in a pizzaria as a kid. I put in a quarter, but it was broken. Thank you for finding it and telling me it's name so that I can finally find it and play it.

so, when i was a young in the early 90s, i was in the hospital with pneumonia. i remember borrowing the NES from the play room and i was playing a game where i was some kind of ninja character and all i can remember is jumping around from tree to tree. i think this is the game and i thought that i would never see this game again. If you play Shmups, Legends 2 on PS2 is a must own. It has several classic Taito arcade shooters making this arguably the best PS2 game of that genre.
The snake was actually a Rokurokubi, a folklore legend of a Geisha that has an abnormally long neck and uses it to strangle its victims.
I was trying to remember the name of it when James mentioned it

It really is. I started playing it on my ps2 yesterday and I still can't put it down. No other fighting game has managed to give me this much enjoyment.
That "snake" is a yokai called Rokurokubi, a long-necked woman.
12:49 The long necked woman at this point is a "Rokurokubi" which is a Japanese folklore monster which roughly means "Pulley neck". Basically vengeful spirits in human form with different traits.

To be fair, all three are common villains in Japanese culture and fiction. The businessmen are often in league with the mafia and involved in shady, coercive real estate deals. Kind of like the one depicted in Food Wars, but they actually happen.

If you get the chance, I'd highly recommend going back to Hat Trick Heros (known as Euro Football Champ in the UK, and presumably Europe).
Not for the football/soccer. But you realise they have included beat em up mechanics in the game. Which makes it a much more fun experience, especially when finding the most creative ways to get players sent off for fouls.

As a new Zealand citizen, I can definitely say kiwis do indeed shoot bow and arrows, smoke cigarettes and and fly on geese. Frozen whales also are existing creatures and they are extremely common. It's almost guaranteed to spot one when you are looking into the ocean.

Man, Taito's arcade games seem so fun varying with colorful graphics. How did they run out of business? Specially after making Violence Fight?
It didn't, they're still around today, though they mostly make Darius, Space Invaders and Bust-A-Move games these days.

Square Enix bought them. Taito still exist though pretty fractured, most doesn't even released under Square Enix.
The fact that Arkanoid and Chase HQ are not included in this collection is a crime. Other than that, this looks like a cool collection. Love Taito, one of the best Japanese game companies.

You should know that Japanese people often confuse the "l" and the "r" when they try to speak western languages. So as they wanted to find westerners for the characters in their game, they probably didn't care if it was "r" or "l" and had to call their character "lick joe" instead of "Rick Joe".
I laughed more than I'd want to admit with that attempt at the Nerd "singing" the jungle hunt theme.
Then I remembered that one time he sang the Zyuranger theme song with the correct lyrics in a unnecessarily loud tone and I laughed harder xDDD

I liked the concept but it was too hard too quick. You died not even a minute into the game after there were bad guys all shooting at you at the same time

Gun Frontier is one of my favorite Taito games. I know it's not for everyone, but there's just something about shooting giant gun robots as a weird biplane that gets me.

I've played Cameltry. Fun game. I also remember Taito did port that game on the Super Nintendo as "On the Ball", which was compatible with the SNES Mouse. Also, speaking of Pink Floyd, I swear the BGM playing during Plotting sort reminds of reminds me of "Break in the Wall".

Fun fact, Plotting was actually released on the Game Boy (international) and Famicom (Japan only) as Flipull. Both ports are pretty fun actually and move faster than the arcade version appears to.
