Angry Video Game Nerd (AVGN) episode 184: Countdown Vampires for the PlayStation 1. Countdown Vampires is a survival horror game developed by K2 LLC and published by Bandai. It's basically Resident Evil, but with vampires instead of zombies. In Countdown Vampires, you play Keith Snyder, a tattooed celebrity bodyguard who has come to the ritzy Desert Moon Hotel on New Year's Eve 1999. When a fire starts in the hotel, the ceiling sprinklers go off. Rather than spray water, they drop an oozing dark liquid all over the glamorous guests. This liquid, whatever it is, turns the other guests into vampires. Now it's your job to find an antidote while fending off preying bloodsuckers, flesh-eating zombies, and bone-crushing monsters. Through the game you'll explore eight different locations--from woodland areas to bars to casino floors--to solve the mystery. It also happens to be one of the worst tank-controlled PS1 games of all time.

The opening cinematic of this game is actually pretty sick, especially when you compare it to how Lara Croft and her ilk used to look in their cinematics in the 90's. These character models are really impressive for the time.
I liked the style a lot. It was a great compromise between semi realism and animation. I somewhat miss it. Now, video games try way too hard with the cutscenes for "muh realism". Where has the artistic touch gone, now that everything has to look like live action movies?
But the time was 2000. FFX's cutscenes came out one year later.
Given so much of it didn't appear in the final game I would not be surprised if it was rendered at the start of what must have been a train wreck of a production

the main character's design is peak late 90s and early 2000s style the tribal tattoos,leather clothes and frosted tips.
The tattoo is the exact one George Clooney had in From Dusk Til Dawn.
I like how you brought back a slice of reality from those special yrs. I would take that look over a man bun any day.
I don't care for tattoos, but otherwise it's a genuinely great look. Style reached its peak back then. So much in fact that many of the companies and sellers that deal in such apparel and style are still around. It's such a timeless and likeable era. Compare that to all the man buns, half-shaved cuts, skinny jeans, lumberjack beards and so on today. Yeh...give me my "edgy" late 90s look, please.

More than Leatherface, he survived the ENTIRETY of that family. Remember, Leatherface isn't necessarily where the true horror of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but rather he's the most iconic of the bunch.
The file actually says he was "responsible" for his death. Guessing this was just a half-assed translation and it was actually trying to say that his partner got killed because he was careless or something.
It would be interesting to see the original version and find out if the Japanese voices were any better.

"What were they thinking"? Well, very smart actually. Most of franchises have no link with each other except for the name. By letting people who want to make Resident Evil make Resident Evil instead of say, Countdown Vampires 2, there will be more Resident Evil games that people will just eat.

Most likely Capcom saw their pathetic attempt at a game, and saw potential. Maybe with a bigger budget and an established franchise they can do well. And it turns out they did.

the PS1 title screen is sooooo great. Incredibly nostalgic.
A real return to form! The classic intro everybody loves, you’re in a Dracula costume again, and it really laid back and back to basics. We love just watching you kick back with one obscure, bad game and giving your thoughts.
Well, with how many classics there are in his Halloween collection episodes, I guess it makes sense for him to go with a "back to basics" on this one.

@@bubblegumxoNot at all. From what I remember it's basically the exact same game just with a few minor additions. I think the only big difference is the boss you fight half way through the game.
Also on the mini-game mode Prince of Darkness (wish AVGN covered both those two).
@@DarkXork So in other words it wasn't merely ripping off Resident Evil, it was copying Resident Evil 2 note for note.
Apparently some of those characters in the intro actually appear in the alternate story mode you unlock by completing the game in under 8 hours.

Japanese people use B because they don't have the V sound, so "Globe" probably was a literal katakana transliteration
that would be very sad if it were the case. Then again, I don't think anyone actually loves this game.
I think a literal transliteration of how you'd approximate "glove" in katakana would be "gurobu".
This is more likely to be "the item names were done by someone who didn't know their context in the game".
This is also the reason for the Varia suit in Metroid. It's literally just Barrier Suit in Katakana.
You'd think they have professional translators translating their game, but apparently the budget was too low for that.

Could have also been a localization error that was overlooked, there's no sound similar or the same in Japanese as an English "V" sound. It's a common mistake in lots of older games.

The Japanese sometimes have trouble with the letters B and V in English, because the phonetics are the same in Japanese for both. That'S where the "stun globe" comes from -- a Japanese person translated it wrong.
