In this video, I react to Taylor Swift's music video, The Man. As a video editor, I not only do a reaction to the music video, but I dig into the editing techniques used throughout.

The "Leo" line is in reference to Leonardo DiCaprio, he is known to date women pretty much until they are 25 and move on, the media largely doesn't make a big deal about this. On the flip side, people LOOOOVEE to only focus on Taylor's relationships and not her work.

And his legendary yacht parties with like 20 models and himself.
And no one cared about George Clooney being a serial dater and self proclaimed life long bachelor before he was married. It was actually what made him more desirable.

The scene with the hands is basically a representation of what happens after a one night stand with a woman and a man. The woman is still sleeping after doing stuff with the man, meanwhile the man gets dressed and gets ready to go, basically ditching the woman and saying "I just wanted to bang you" and so he leaves and everyone congratulates him. All his friends are proud of him for using a woman for her body only. Yes, woman do this to to men sometimes, but it is more common with men bc you see their "bros" doing handshakes with the guys who got laid when it's really not an achievement 💀
and the women who would do this are hardly ever congratulated. Instead, they're called terrible names.

The hallway scene is reminiscent but opposed to a scene in the 1969 horror film called repulsion directed by Roman Polanski. In the film a hallway of hands grope and grab at the female protagonist reflecting themes of sexual assault- whereas In this version the hands high five the Man- I guess it’s depicting the way that sexuality in woman can be used against them be it in shame or sexual violence- whereas in men it is almost always congratulated and rewarded.
Acording to my son this is reversed these days. My son says women just want hookups and nothing more.
@@tedthurgate Yeah both genders do it a lot. But if you look at it in a way, men always do handshakes and get "hyped" for having a high body count. Women just get slut shamed and don't get the high fives like men usually do.
The tennis scene- the umpire is her dad! 🥰 but it is a call out about a situation with Serena Williams at the US Open. She did what so many men have done and yet it was blown out of complete proportion.
And in comparison - John McEnroe, who built his entire career around having mantrums on the court. Men literally get cheered for this. They did Serena SO dirty.

So what if she was in the wrong? Two wrongs don’t make a right. Warn her, yell at her but they completely treated disproportionally. It’s the “angry black female” has to be on her best behavior so not to offend anyone. It was disgusting. She is usually so professional, geesh not allowed to be human or show emotion.

Not only was it her the whole time, she also wrote and directed it. Her talent is astonishing.
She got coaching on how to walk and gesture as a guy but the one thing they couldn’t do is change her voice… so if you are going to dub over it, then might as well make it an iconic voice.

I kept thinking that the whole video would be more meaningful if they’d dressed Taylor as the man only to find at the end that it WAS her! That’s just how good makeup and prosthetic pros did but speaks also to how she aced men mannerismas!

The ballgirl at the end is called Loren Grey. Her fans are called Angels and when you see her she is rolling her eyes. In Taylor's song Cruel Summer she has a lyric that says "angels roll their eyes" so that's a small easter egg lol

So fun watching you realize it was her (and yes, it was her)!! To answer one of your questions: the sign for "If found, return to Taylor Swift" is in reference to her music, specifically her master recordings. You likely know she tried to buy them from her prior record label owned by Scott Borchetta, and he told her she could "work them off," meaning for every new album she recorded, she could buy ONE of her master recordings. So she left and he sold them to Scooter Braun (and you caught the "no scooters" sign!).
Also, you were right that was Dwayne the Rock's voice, but you missed the point: she was telling the actor to be sexy and more likable...that is what women in entertainment are *constantly* told. Oh and in the chorus, we hear: "When everyone believes you, what's that like?" because women are often not believed about anything important, especially if they are disagreeing with a man. Finally, a piece of trivia: the umpire at the end is Taylor's dad. 😊

I feel redeemed that a music video expert didn't figure out it was Taylor the whole time. I didn't either, but there was this other reactor who said everyone who didn't figure it out before the reveal was plain ridiculous. I was really pissed off when he said that 😂

The scene where all her albums and the sign “if found please return to Taylor Swift” refers to as she didn’t have the opportunity to buy her own masters which had already been sold to Scooter 🛴 (her record label had sold all the masters/albums to him without her knowledge or awareness) .
Karma is believed to be her hidden album by the fans but now its one of her singles.
OMG I just realized now he hasn't watched Look What You Made Me Do. It would serve him well to understand through that video why some fans guessed Karma was a discarded album of hers.
I think the idea w/ Karma began as Taylor just being Taylor. She dug into it deeper during tough times. She’s said there was never a scrapped album. She has already said what she wrote about during that time that she knew she’d never publish. Taylor, especially now doesn’t strike me as the kind of artist who would scrap a whole album.
Back to this MV, I think with “The Wall” it represents, encompasses the whole history and story of her deciding to re-record her albums. All the Past present and future choices and consequences.
Her first 6 albums are represented one way or another on the wall twice.
Karma as a song …if fans nag her enough, she will give them what they want…in a tongue-in-cheek way. Again I still think it’s rooted in a bigger picture which she has hinted about in interviews along w/ nods towards specific works of art.

it’s crazy to think this was her directorial debut! one of my other favorite video by her is 22 (she didn’t direct it but it’s a really cool video!)

It's really worth noting that this was the first full video Taylor directed on her own. (Christmas Tree Farm is pretty much just a bunch of old home movies so I don't count that). She was a co-director before starting in 2019.
Since The Man, all of her videos have been directed by her.
Just crazy how talented, and hardworking, she is.

The morning shot of the “man” sitting on the end of the bed in that body language of regret and emptiness…just for a second..and the woman laying with her naked back and the big window only lighting her up. I would swear someone is an Edward Hopper fan.
Although she didn’t direct it, to me, look what you made me do is a brilliant masterpiece you should react to by Joseph Khan. Man I am a swiftie and I LOVE her direction and sense of detail, but her epic comeback, which to me was a complete pop culture reset, is something everyone should study, filled with Easter eggs.
I agree. I loooove Taylor's style and direction, but her Joseph Kahn collabs produced her *best* music videos. I wish he wasn't so problematic but yeah
She has kept certain um flairs or characteristics in his style. Blank Space MV is very symmetrically balanced. Kahn has quoted Kubrick as an inspiration, specifically stylization, framing, & balance we see in The Shining… w/ the juxtaposition of telling a story about someone going crazy.
Lover MV which Kahn didn’t have a part of, we see the same symmetry in all the rooms which i really, really love & think that is one of many elements Taylor has picked up from people she has worked with to build up her own sense of visual storytelling. She has always been a great “student” in that sense.
That video is peak video production, a master class in direction, design, choreography and editing. Every beat is jaw-dropping (but especially the cut when the car slams into the pole).
In the subway scene in the beggining, you can see that the sign in the right side say BOSS SCOTCH: CAPITALIZE ON THE FEELING, and someone wrote GREEDY close to it. The owner of her old label who sold her music is called Scott Borchetta. You can do the math for yourself hahaha
About Tyler Swift: that is the poster for Miss Americana, her documentary, directed by LANA Wilson, which was released during the sundance festival.
I love this…this gentleman was so great at picking up shadows, editing and different nuances of the video, even recognized Dwayne Johnson’s voice. I saw Taylor swift in the first scene. Just goes to show you, in life, we all focus on different things.

19:20 yes, completely agree that’s what she’s saying about her own life, but it’s also every woman. Every woman is docked in talent, acknowledgement, respect, equal pay. Some women more than others. It’s not just about her, but she’s using her lived experience to show just how ridiculous the standard is for men.

I'm a senior in film school and i'm preparing for a post grad degree in post-production, this is the first video i watch of yours and i just want to say i really appreciate that you dive into explaining VFX techniques, color grading, blocking etc etc. Most people don't realize that being an editor means you have to understand the director's vision (and therefore techniques) and I think you really nailed explaining all the technical details from both the post production and on-set process. Ive seen other editors only focus on transitions and match-cuts, so this is a treat! Amazing video, im so glad i found your channel :)

3:04 the girl in the yellow hoodie, it says "Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince." this is one of the songs on this album. Also Miss Americana is the title of her Netflix documentary.
5:39 i think the girls are wearing yellow bikinis because Fearless was going to be the first rerecord (each album has a color), i think that's also why fearless is written backwards on the man wall, it was the first of rerecords.

The scene where he is running and high fiving the painted arms is, to my believe, a reference to how women are shamed for having one-night stands, but men are praised for it. So him walking out of the room to all of those hands to shake in congrats for a victory is a symbolism of that.

Honestly, this was an awesome video (all Taylor's videos are masterpieces, I think she had a lot of control there, even before she owned her work), thank you for understanding her message, most men just get offended and go on rants about how all men isn't like that, and it's kind of exhausting, it's not like we don't know this, but most of society still favor men and have double standards unfortunetely

"Karma" is totally her f'ng with us. There's a pretty uniform fan theory that there was going to be an album named "Karma" after 1989, but she never made/released it. Some think she edited the work and changed it to Reputation, or she just gutted the whole project. But she's got ALBUM names on that damn wall, and karma is just front and center.
"Return to Taylor Swift" references her albums that are still owned by Scooter dude.
Then of course on the other side is the "no scooter" beside the two albums she's rerecorded. (It should have been pretty obvious to fans that she was saying these would be the first to be rerecorded, but I wasn't a conspiraswifty then)
Last, Dwayne Johnson did an AMAZING job on Lip Sync Battle performing "Shake it Off" so I guess she reaches out when she had a spot that would be cool.

4:30 I love that Easter egg wall! The albums on the wall were her masters that were sold, which is why the “missing” poster was there, saying that her albums were missing from her collection. They were sold to Scooter Braun, who she has a public feud with, hence the “no scooters” sign. I feel like the karma spray paint meaning is obvious, and you were right about the “Tyler Swift” poster.
I think it was a hint to Taylor’s versions and I heard that Karma was supposed to be a full album

The scene with the hands is a metaphor for the one night stand double standard. However, I believe it also was a direct callout on Kim and Kanye's decor from the time. Kim had posted a picture in a hallway like that with an arm statue thing. (If my memory serves me correct)
Maybe there wasn't an arm/hand statue, but the hallway resembles the one in the mansion the kardashian lived in at the time.

the missing and found poster is for an album called Karma that it is rumored that her past label did not allow her to release it due to the scandal with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, that's when she released REPUTATION, that's why in the music video of look what you make me do, it comes out TS in a cage in an orange suit (orange is the representative color of her karma album) and also at the end of the LWYMMD video at the plane KARMA is crossed out and there is a TS in orange, also all the midnight karma video does reference to the "lost" album.
