Another thing people don't realize is she was also struggling with an eating disorder for a period of time which obviously effected her stamina and support during those long, intense live shows. She's in a much healthier place as an adult and it shows. :)
I read today that she said she's the happiest and in the best place she has been in her entire life so yeah I'm happy she managed to get through all the shit she got thrown at her
I really think this is a huge factor. It’s insane how healthy she looks now, and I mean she must be. Just watching her during the Eras Tour, there’s no way she doesn’t have a personal trainer and nutritionist.

Does it ever? She does 3 hour concerts with choreography and still sounds great at the end! and she doesn't sing to a track either. It's all her! It's insane someone could even do that!
Absolutely. Feeling winded/tired makes it so hard to keep breath control and if you're not breathing well, it's hard to sing well. Add to that dancing/moving around on a stage, it's understandable that she maybe wasn't at her best. Besides all that, I think it's clear that she's really worked on her technique and expanded her range, and began to use parts of her voice she hadn't before.
I read once that Taylor is a songwriter who sings her own songs, not a singer that writes her own songs and I think that kind of describes it perfectly.
She can hit the notes when she wants but it’s not what she strives to do, instead she strives to tell stories.
She’s a singer songwriter. Cause she Can sings almost anything and sound great, all the covers she had done are so good. There’s others who are songwriter who are not very great at singing but they do, Taylor is singing for 3+ hours. But everything she sings is her creation and it has to be a story tell through music, lyrics, interpretation and performance

Taylor leaning more into her lower vocal range is the best thing she has done for her singing, as well as taking care of her body properly. She is singing better than she ever has before.
I completely agree. I also believe that people tend to equate great singing with higher notes. When you can be a good singer with a longer range. I mean look at Toni Braxton. And I think that Taylor’s lower range gives her more power to her voice.
Agreed, I tell my husband it’s her soft wispy vocals are my favorite.

Because anyone knows that disorders need treatment and medical care and they ignored and minimized them in the documentary. Leading anyone with critical sense to see that it could be a lie and that she didn't know how to talk about it.

Very big swiftie here. We love new fans and we’re always here to answer any questions you may have! The guy you showed is her guitarist Paul Sidoti, and he has been with her since the beginning. I went to see her in 2018 at the reputation tour and he was in my section saying hi to fans and I was lucky enough to meet him. He’s the sweetest and we even got a picture together!!! If you wanna hear her lower register more I recommend All Too Well (Ten Minute Version). ‘I still remember the first fall of snow, and how it glistened as it fell’ she takes that note on fell LOW low. Also one of my faves is My Tears Ricochet. Also Tolerate It. I could go on and on lmao😂

one of my favourite things is when people realise most of her band (the agency) have stayed with her since Speak Now (aka 2010), or earlier, like her bass player Amos or even her background singers who came in later and have stayed for years. It speaks to her character in my opinion.

This really helped made the Eras Tour so much more rich. Muscle memory for her voice and moves.

You are correct about the 2014 performance, she was sick with laryngitis and you can here in interviews that she did before and after this performance that she had absolutely no voice so this performance is very good considering she had laryngitis and couldn't talk

Taylor mentioned in the Time Person of the Year article that she ran on the treadmill singing the entire 3 hour Eras tour setlist every day for 6 months. She would run during the fast songs and either jog or walk during the slower songs to help prepare her.
That makes sense. I was in awe that she could sing like she was during the tour, long show and it definitely sounded live.
She definitely has a lot of stamina!
The guitarist is Paul Sidoti and he, as well as her bassist, Amos Heller, have been with Taylor since 2007. Many of her musicians and back up singers has been with her for years.
I was lucky enough to see The Eras Tour in Arlington, Texas (night one.) She was incredible.
Everyone that she includes have been with her since the fearless tour I think and the only thing that really changed is her dancers

I'm a Swiftie and have been for a long time. In my uneducated opinion, she forces her upper range too much because that's more "poppy." Devloping her lower range and leaning into it is where she really shines.
I half agree with you here. Of course I’m no vocal coach expert however I am an aspiring musical theatre performer and hope to one day be on the west end, so I have pretty good knowledge about how to keep my own voice healthy and supported, so here I am slightly projecting onto Taylor.
Taylor’s lower register is indeed beautiful and her voice is more comfortable in lower tones, however I don’t believe she forces or pushes her upper range. If it was forced, you would be able to tell as it would strain her voice beyond repair due to how often she would be straining it. She has learned how to support her voice when hitting notes which perhaps aren’t where her voice comfortably sits, and she’s extended her range from there. Her upper vocal register is very strong, supported, and holds the passion and emotion that her more lower range songs with typically more emotional value have, so she’s not just singing a pop song but she’s taking each note in

@@jenrenbyi mean she does a 3 hour singing show multiple days times a week with pretty low to high notes, so if her notes were strained or not supported, she would have no voice and that’s like certain. she is a very good vocalist in terms of like, she is consistent and knows what she needs to do.
She’s only really had these low notes for the last few years as her voice matures and stuff apparently
I see a lot of singers with her range say they can’t go low like Taylor because of their age being younger and less mature

Taylor Swift is such a talented person in general. The effort it takes to write songs, play piano and guitar, and sing THIS good is crazy. Taylor’s also just so kind, and you can see that it’s not an act. She’s my forever fav artist. 💖

Love this! Just want to note, maybe it has already been mentioned, but around 2011-2014 or so, Taylor had a progressing ED that made her feel faint on stage. She mentions this in her special Miss Americana. That is why, for a few years there, you can see her taking a lot of big breaths for belting notes that didn't need them or sounding/looking nervous or off. So glad she's recovered now and looking, feeling, and performing even more amazingly than before.
I think she has mentioned that she can’t look at her photos from the 1989 era because when she does sometimes I think it made her revert back to that

If you want low notes, I recommend Carolina (some of her lowest notes are here) and her Long Pond Studio Sessions movie.
She's improved her vocals a lot through the years.
and for vocals like basically any surprise song at the eras tour, especially the piano ones like exile, evermore, you're not sorry, I feel like her voice reall ygets to shine in those acoustic perfomances

@@owenmattes7619 her register is A2-E5 from what I know. There's a girl on tiktok who tries to find Taylor's lowest and highest recorded notes and these are the ones she found. Her actual register may be wider, who knows. I think her vocal coach said that he register is wider than people think, she just chooses to use notes she's more comfortable with.

I love her lower but softer voice vs when she sings loud. I have really noticed this in Reputation and Eras but also with her first 2 albums. I have always loved that soft voice.

Taylor has always struggled with televised live performances. I think it gets to her that the whole nation can see and hear her and she freaks out and tenses up

Not a huge Swiftie, but I do think the best she'll ever sound belting is performing Don't Blame Me. Her writing on that song is incredible. Sound in general, lower notes and her chest voice is where she lives most comfortably and I think really shines.
during the red era, she’s spoken about how she went through a time of starving, her body and that really affected the way she sang and how she sounds especially life because she talked about how she felt like it was so normal to just be absolutely exhausted when she was performing so a lot of her live performances surrounding that time sound different because of that

what I've noticed a lot about taylor throughout the years is that her performances from award shows(which are where a lot of these videos are from) are usally her shakiest cause she's nervous but during her live shows she's comfortable and her vocals are confident

taylor is my favorite artist for so many reasons. it’s insane how much her vocals have improved over the years. i went to the eras tour in june and it was easily the best day of my life. there were so many times when i was in shock because of how good the vocals were.

I thought in the Era Tour her voice was the best ever. She ran on a treadmill and sang all 44 songs to prepare for the tour. She did this for months. Plus she ran on a treadmill for stamina. With fast songs she ran faster and slow songs she slowed down to a jog but she sang all 44 at one session.
The 2021 snl All Too Well performance is not my fave live performance of hers! I distinctly remember hearing it at the Eras Tour and being BLOWN AWAY at the difference.
My favorite clip of her singing is her in the studio recording Don’t Blame Me and she just belts out such an insaneeeee phrase. So good, gives me chills.

This is not Taylor Swift related but what you said about girls' voices changing and growing tired due to puberty - I wish someone had told me that when I was 15! I had a sore throat for about 9 months and no one could tell me what the issue was! I went to doctors and specialists and even talked to my singing teacher - it was so frustrating but nice to finally have an answer XD

I loved this! Your analysis was so thoughtful, and it’s wonderful to hear someone willing to go beyond just “yes, this moment was good” or “no, this was bad” and give balanced commentary on possible reasons why or how a performance might be better or worse in that moment. More than that, it’s always great seeing someone open and understanding of the fact that people grow. Too much of the criticism of Taylor’s vocal ability is based on years-old performances, from when she was still a teenager or in her early twenties, and comes from people unwilling to recognize the work she’s put in and the growth she’s experienced since those times. If those same critics would judge her ability now on the performances she’s giving now, I honestly believe we could finally put to bed the rampant idea that Taylor can’t sing live. Again, love this, really great video!

First of all, I want to say you are adorable!
I think you are spot on with your critiques. I never listened much to Taylor Swift until recently. I am terribly sorry I did not follow her throughout her entire career. The woman is a genius! Her superpowers are her everpresent bravery and a willingness to share herself with the world. Intuition and intervoice are her trusted friends.
Perhaps what makes her so appealing is her nack for being real. Couple that with her playful, yet highly intelligent nature, you might find yourself investigating up in the lore. The illustrations she creates are so well thought out and manifest in such a variety of ways that she honestly is a one of a kind, multi-faceted superstar. I am blown away by her never ending increase in knowledge of her trade, her unmistakable generosity toward her employees and fans, and the way she is able to remain humble and Taylor through it all!

This is an actual analysis and very helpful critique. I would love to see you more react to Taylor Swift. I genuinely enjoyed this. This might be one of my favorite reactions of her.
I’m a more recent Swiftie, too. I listened to a handful of her songs when she first started making music, but so many people around me didn’t like her, so I just didn’t listen to her music. And then folklore/evermore came out and I was hooked. I’ve gone back and listened to all her music now. I feel weird calling myself a Swiftie because I’m not a Swiftie to the level of devotion as some other people, but I do really enjoy her music.

i'd HIGHLY recommend the miss americana documentary to every "new" swiftie. that doc gave me such a better perspective on her live performances, especially from around 2012 to 2014. at the time, she was suffering from ED and, later, said she felt weak and like she would pass out on stage. that's another reason for why now, being healthy on top of being an adult with a developed voice, she KILLS IT on stage. she owns it. not only her music, but her voice and own body.

My husband and I saw her in St Louis in 2011. She had a very brief wardrobe malfunction but didn't miss a beat, she was so composed and flawless.
I really enjoyed this commentary. It was so nice to hear this technical analysis and understand her evolution as a vocalist, which is something we don't always get to see when it comes to singers in the public eye. It's also really enjoyable to hear yiu giving the exact same advice and explanations my own singing teacher has given to me over the last 18 months, and I can attest it really does make all the difference to remove all the tension in your body, and improve your placement.
the last time I performed for entertainment (9 1/2 years ago), my mom gave me the tip of not singing too loudly into the mic because it would do the volume work for me. It really is good advice (especially considering the song was Let it Go)

Brava Hannah!! Such wonderful and insightful vocal analysis. I'm not a taylor swift fan and as a singer myself, I often get frustrated when people try to critique her vocally because they either just sing praises because they don't want to upset her fans or they are just ruthless without being constructive. You've toed the line of being constructive but kind so wonderfully in this reaction video and you also are teaching new singers great techniques and habits that they can do. Absolutely great video!

In 2014 Taylor had an ED. The whole 1989 tour. She’s talked about it before that she’d thought she was supposed to feel like passing out during or after a show. She’s healthier now and SO confident. Before she always seemed nervous and scared but today she looks like she has so much fun.
This video makes me happy. I haven't kept up with Taylor Swift, but she was everything when I was in late grade school and junior high. Best friendships were forged swapping favorite lyrics. "Mary's Song" was always my favorite from her early stuff.

That’s so cool to hear that as a teenager we may have difficulty singing. I remember as a teenager being very out of breath and I thought that just meant I was a bad singer 😂

Yeah her lower register has become amazing! You can hear it especially in her more recent albums and songs (from Folklore on), the first time I was really struck by it though, was in Carolina (a standalone song for some movie). Oh and yes that guy in her band has been with her since basically the beginning.

- the thing with nervousness, yes, Taylor, especially back in a day, got really nervous while singing at awards shows, cause it was televised live, in front of thousands of people, while at her own concerts she feels much more comfortable and sounds much better

Love this reaction! I'm a huge Swiftie. Didn't read through all the comments, but yes, Paul Sidoti, her guitarist, has been with her since 2007! I've been obsessed with her low notes for years. They are so rich! It bugs me that I have to raise the key when I sing songs from folklore, evermore or Midnights. I'm working on developing my lower range now.

About her preparation for the performances she talked about it in the time interview that was released yesterday, specially for the eras tour, that she started preparing six months before by running everyday while singing the setlist, and that until this moment she’s been working out three hours per day to keep “in shape” for it.
I so so so love her rich lows especially in evermore and folklore they’re so comforting and then her sharp highs all of 1989 is so crystal clear sharp and I love it
I’m not a swiftie or anything. I casually listen to Taylor Swift now and then and have been since her early days cuz we’re the same age. I love how you did this breakdown, pointing out stylistic stuff, her vocal evolution, and giving vocal information kindly. It actually kind of made me appreciate her more.
