In this Video Editor Reacts, I react to Taylor Swift - Out of the Woods alongside my father who is also a video editor! During this Taylor Swift reaction, we talk about all the editing and production techniques that made Out of the Woods so amazing - all while reacting to it at the same time!
This was our first time watching and first time listening to Out of the Woods and it was such an amazing music video! It honestly blew my expectations out of the water! Taylor Swift once again didn't disappoint.

I’m sure someone has commented this already but this was the last music video of this album and the dress she wears in this video is significant. Her next album’s first music video is Look What You Made Me Do, which you already reacted to. At the beginning of the video in the graveyard, Zombie Taylor is burying a coffin with herself in that dress, signalling her transition from Out Of The Woods to Look What You Made Me Do.
OMG 😳 And then people ask why are we crazy for Taylor Swift 😩❤️
Isnt New Romantics the last music video like she did for the song Red and video? Where it's just tour footage. I don't Google just try to remember everything that I can. Lmk if I'm wrong, but as a video that didn't use stock footage from tour I would consider OOTW the last music video I guess?
@@1989TaylorsVersiom New Romantics video was more of a trailer for the 1989 World Tour video on Apple Music as Taylor intro'd it and talked in the middle as well, plus it's not actually the performance of New Romantics as other parts of the concert are cut in when there's a chance. That said it's a great little video but I wouldn't regard it as a music video of NR. Strangely the audio is actually the studio version NOT the live version she is promoting. (Confirmed by listening to the line "The rumors..." at 1min44 on trailer is much different to that on the concert video. I have just compared them.)
@@1989TaylorsVersiom Technically yes. But I meant non tour video. :)
Also, her pose where she seems to become a tree (inspired by Daphne from the myth about Apollo and Daphne - so much symbolism there about escaping a toxic relationship/female independence) with the fireflies around her returns in the music video for "...ready for it?"
This MV was a masterpiece!! Her career has insane cinematography and it's getting better and better
Ok katarina
@@catchickenleg8878 I really need to change my username this was from 2012 💀
@@ThatKatGuy nooo 😭
Her music videos now aren't as impressive (maybe Karma)
@@fosminclorin yea i kinda agree ever since she start to direct her mvs
its the fact she was actually filming in New Zealand Queenstown mountains, and the director posted pictures of how cold and snowy it was.
I knew it! That's I believe where the scenes of Rivendell were filmed (Lord of the Rings)
@@Videoeditorreacts yes !! there's a whole tourist attraction where they kept a lot of the sets from the movie. it's called hobbiton, and you can go into some of the hill houses and also eat and drink at the restaurant / bar
they also closed hobbiton for a while because they were using the sets to film the amazon spin-off show 'rings of power' :)
Interesting. If you hadn’t said anything, the rocks offshore would have made me think this was shot at Moro Bay on California’s Central Coast.
@@sla6hedI went there, such a magical and incredible place ❤
There is some behind the scenes footage. The wolves were real, the mountains were real. They had to get special permission to film on that particular beach for environmental reasons. Taylor commented that, despite all the snow in the video, the coldest day was when she was crawling thru the mud.
Thank you so much for breaking down the editing in this video. Fascinating!
From Wikipedia
oseph Kahn directed the music video for "Out of the Woods".[59] The video's filming locations in New Zealand included Bethells Beach and the mountains of Queenstown.[60] During the filming, a severe storm struck, causing a one-week delay.[61]
Kahn said that Swift "suffered for the art"; she did not employ a double stunt and did all the action, such as crawling through the mud or running through the snow, by herself.[64] Media publications remarked on the video's visual effects and cinematic storytelling.[65][66] Amanda Bell from MTV News compared the video's cinematic quality to the Harry Potter series, and commented that the video's message "serves as a clear metaphor for her very public relationship history and how she transformed each conflict into her own personal victories, one in particular
You have something to learn from your father, it's not just about the effects, he can really understand the meaning of the story with every shot. When he said that the transition between the forest, the fire, the snow it's how she feels about the relationship, men he was so on point. Good review.
I am a BIG swiftie and honestly, this is my favourite song of hers. The way she uses the woods as a metaphor for anxiety in a relationship is something to be congratulated. Not only that, the pace of the song and the repetition of ‘ Are we out of the woods yet?’ Implements a deep understanding of what she felt. It’s absolutely insane and the video is beyond words ♥️
I know nothing about video editing but I really enjoyed this video! Your father is an amazing person his commentary was sooo delightful.
Thank you so much! That means a lot!
you should react to the behind the scenes of this music video !
I can't wait!!!
It’s insane, she’s committed and determined ❤
Do the BEHIND THE SCENEA
@@VideoeditorreactsWE can’t wait
@@Videoeditorreactswhen will u!?
Nice hearing your dad’s opinions as well
Taylor didn’t use a double for any part of this video. It was filmed on location in NZ ans she did all the actions scenes herself, including walking through the snow, crawling through the mud, etc.
I take media studies in school and it’s so interesting and fun to see you react you Taylor’s music videos since i love her so much. Learning so much
Thank you so much!! I'm glad you're learning! I don't know how she just keeps producing such amazing music videos lol. They're all great!!
In her acoustic performance of this song (and a few others from 1989) for the Grammy Museum she explains the song source. She talks about the relationship being super fragile and feeling like you couldn’t count on it being there tomorrow. It is about Harry Styles (she went on a ski trip with him and they got into a snowmobile accident & he ended up in the hospital with stitches- which she references in the song).
Great reaction!! I loved your father's participation, please bring him again more often. ❤
This song is about her relationship with Harry Styles (she mentions the paper airplane necklace they wore, the bridge even talks a little about an accident they suffered together etc.) and the foxes and the trees represent the media and everyone trying to tear them apart. Her comment on the track: “It kind of conjured up all these feelings of anxiety I had in a relationship where everybody was watching, everybody was commenting on it. You’re constantly just feeling like, ‘Are we out of the woods yet? What’s the next thing gonna be? What’s the next hurdle we’re gonna have to jump over?'”
It's awesome to see her music videos through the lens of a video editor! Gives me even more appreciation for them
This is by far my favorite music video by her.
Just a little bit of context and one easter egg: if you look at exactly 3:12 in the music video, you can see an "HS" written in her arm. HS as in Harry Styles ;)
I love that you picked up the theme of the relationship. She wrote this song about a relationship that she was so riddled with anxiety over. That's why she keeps repeating "are we out of the woods yet?"
I’ve spent time with wolves that were socialized at a sanctuary. They were very friendly and playful.
the end scene is literally what the end message says *she found herself* if you notice the symbolism is on the dress. the one standing has the "immaculate/new dress" and the one coming out has a torn dress, which is just saying SHE came out of the woods a changed person carrying the "trauma" of the relationship, but somehow after all that she came out on the other side, *knowing* herself a lot more and what she is capable to deal with and what she is willing to give up or not give up for someone.
The transition from OOTW blue dress to LWYMMD blue dress Taylor is perfection ❤️
I wish you had reacted to this first, so you could have made the connection in LWYMMD lol. Her mind is always working and it's so much fun
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE how much yall LOVE this video. This has been the most enjoyable reaction you have done because you and your father are great together. Its like yall can finish each other's sentences. 💙💙💙
Thank you so much!! This was a blast to film with him. Can't wait to have him on again! We have one more we filmed together and I can't wait to share that one too!
@@VideoeditorreactsScreaming 😱 omg. I can't wait.
It's so cool hearing your dad's takes on this top tier MV, can't believe he meet abu that's amazing, but how he never told you 😂
Right?? I'm jealous! Lol
You two just helped me calm down after one of the worst nightmares i had. I love Taylor with all my heart but i don't understand ANYTHING about editing so I just adore seeing you explaining details cuz I'll never imagine it'll take THAT much work 😂 thank u so much, sending lots of love from Argentina to you two ❤
Ok so your video made me look up the bts of this one and now I’m dying for you and your dad to watch that and then have all your guesses confirmed or not…cus 1. You were right about New Zealand and 2. There are more practical effects than we would’ve ever guessed! SO COOL!
Can't wait to check it out!!! Thank you!!
This music video gives me chills every time. So cool to watch you and your dad break it down.
Welcome to the 1989 rollercoaster!!! So cool to learn from all your experience. Between the two of you nothing got missed in this video!
Except…did you notice the vines spelled out out of the woods!!
@@enbrill Wait- WHAT? OK- Now I have to go back and watch again.
Did you notice the roots at the beginning, only for like a split second, are spelling out Out Of The Woods? It took me so long to notice as I am not an English speaker lol but when I did it a few years (!) later it blew my mind 🤣
LOL I actually didn't notice that at all! Thank you!
The things you both pointed out is SO interesting. I love that your dad saw the orange hint. You both have such sharp eyes. Loved this! Also. Absolutely saw your inner child come out for a moment when you heard he met abu. Like. How DARE you not at least TELL me daaaad 😂
Will be happy to know there is actually a behind the scenes of this music video. And also the look what you made me do video. Fyi love the shenanigans between you and your dad. He's so awsome. I can see where you got your lovely personality
All the videos from 1989 are amazing! Joseph Khan did an amazing job. Video wise I cant pick a favorite video from the album. Thank you for continuing your Taylor swift journey 💙 a Swiftie
YES!
i love this mv so much!
This music video was amazing!! I agree!
Posted 13 days after you reacted to the last Taylor Swift Video. I see what you did there! (I don't even know if it was intentional but I couldn't help but notice) LOL. Btw amazing analysis and loved seeing your dad on the channel. Show him LWYMD video....get his expert opinions!
Lol, may or may not have been on purpose! Oh he saw my reaction to it. He thought it was amazing! Thank you so much!
@@Videoeditorreacts thank you so much for giving us a gift of reacting to Taylor for the very first time again!
Its so underrated this MV deserves more! The music industry 🫶🏻❤️🔥✨
the behind the scenes video explains so many of the things you guys were questioning. it's definitely worth a look. you can see the cliff's edge shot for example with the crane
Two heads are better than one when both are knowledgeable. Thank you both.
There is a behind the scenes for this one and they are in New Zealand on location- you should definitely watch and react to that!
Love having your dad here too- so cool to see 😊
this song she says represents her anxiety, which was the feeling she felt the most on the relationship that inspired it. so you’re absolutely right with your takes! that’s why the chorus is repetitive, cause she kept thinking “is this over yet so i can BREATHE again??” which makes a lot of sense with the music video and how she felt exposed to heat and cold and just anxious to leave and be ok again
Such a great duo reaction!
It’s so fun seeing you with your dad! What a treat. I wish I’d had that ‘darkest black’ advice about 15 years ago when I was taking 3D animation in college, haha.
She does her own stunts and yes she did this all, in the snow, during a storm. Its all her!
i would love to see your reaction to wildest dreams by taylor, its deffs one of her most visually beautiful videos ever!
Nice to see your dad back again!! Would love to see both yours and his reactions to Ready for it. Its a video with a lot of really well done CGI so would be great to see both of your reactions cos its one of her best. Out of a whole giant list of awesome tho lol. Also you were talking the other day at liking one takes, Taylor has her own called We are never ever getting back together. Its so immaculately done that a lot of people dont even notice lol.
It was AMAZING to see you and your father share knowledge and experience like that. WOW!
now she directs her own mv things are even better she’s a genious and has EVERY reason to be at the top of the world right now! everything she does is FLAWLESS and sooooo well thought! the lyrics the album eras the concerts the perfomances the music videos EVERYTHING i mean no one in this f world could say she doesn’t deserve to be the BEST right !!! i lovvvve this reacts of yours!
This song is such a fun bop that doesn’t seem too serious but then paired with this music video it brings so much emotion to the song!
I love Taylor Swift so much and this MV is such a masterpiece, it was so different from all the other music videos out there. It had a complete story compacted within a few minutes. Also, I love your Dad and yours energy together. You should do more videos with him.
It’s very sweet watching you and your father. Loved this reaction, bring him back for Look What You Made Me Do.
love love love this!! i would adore seeing more of these, you both add so much insight to many things i would have no idea about even after years of being a taylor fan and seeing these videos countless times. your laughs at the end made me smile and laugh too! 💜
your dad is hilarious! love hearing both your insights and getting to rewatch taylor's music videos with a fresh perspective!
This reaction was amazing and your dad's commentary made it so much better.
So happy you did this!! I totally wanna see you react to her “I Bet You Think About Me” music video. Its one of my favorites from her, even though the special effects aren’t particularly crazy until near the end. I promise it’s worth watching!!
I’ll never get tired of watching people breakdown this MV it’s truly a masterpiece, Taylor’s we’ll know for beautifully written lyrics and stunning music videos. New to your channel as of this video, so if you’ve already checked it out feel free to ignore this but if you haven’t I highly highly recommend ‘all too well the short film’ Taylor directed it as she does with many of her videos, but there’s something about all too that is really captivating
This was the best and most enjoyable critique of a video I've ever watched....amazing break down....
Really REALLY enjoyed this. Bringing your father in was brilliant. His added insights truly enhanced the experience. I hope you'll continue down this road. I'll be back for it.
i just wanna share that this music video alone made me a whole swiftie im a just a casual listener of hers but when this music video came out im blown away! the song meaning, the instrumentals and with this music video, how could you not? and im happy seeing reaction videos of this masterpiece because it really is. im glad you’re doing Taylor Swift mv reax. i have subscribed immediately!
Thank you so much! Welcome to the channel! I agree- this video was INSANE!
Im so happy! This is my favorite taylor swift video ever ❤❤
11:28 yes!! I love those types of scenes. There is one in Happy Death Day 2 (I think its the second movie that has this scene) but its so good!!
or she walked up from off camera where the waves are coming in and the waves washed away her footsteps lol.
i love that you did this with your dad!
The video is good and all. This song is amazing live. Smacked the hell out of my local arena!!!
this is awesome! I love listening to people who have the passion for what they do, you can hear the eagerness and happiness in their voice :D
this is one of my favorite taylor music videos, and i love both of your breakdowns !!! please bring your dad back more if you can ♡
Your videos are great but both of you together is just fantastic! I love the funny commentary!
This music video is amazing. It’s one of my least favourite songs on 1989 but I can appreciate how wonderfully done this music video is. As someone who requested this, I was so excited to see this upload.
Thanks for listening to our requests! We knew you would love it and I love dad too!!
I love how you still paid attention to the lyrics and the symbolism in this video ❤❤❤
So cool you finally reacted to it !! As always I loved your reaction and really enjoyed this video with your dad!
So glad you loved it! The storytelling is some of her best in my opinion, especially without it being a literal telling of the events like a lot of her earlier videos tended to be. Also on a sidenote the dress from this video is probably my favourite look from her ever, so excited for it to be my Eras tour costume!
Wow thanks for digging into this masterpiece! 🎉 Taylor has always been known for her lyricism and imagery into her songs and of course into music videos like this. Every scene has their unique meanings. She worked with Joseph Khan here and they all did amazing together 💎
Cant wait for 1989 TV on Oct 27 🩵
Wait hahaha I didn't see it until the end of the video...
Your dad is wearing The Chosen shirt... coooooll
She has some great music videos, but this one is the best for me! Love your reaction!!!
I like your dad and the dynamic between you two.
the eyes of the people that are involved in films are truly amazing. you guys can catch the tiniest glimpse of things and pay lots of attention to the details!❤
Oh my god your dad AND a cat in the same video???? Just that already made me love it, but it's also a Taylor Swift' masterpiece ❤️ i love the reaction, thanks!! I was waiting for you to point out "out of the woods" written with the moving tree branches in the beginning
She also has behind the scenes videos so you can see how they made the trees and the locations :) its so beautifull!
Thanks for the video! Loved it ❤ Wildest Dreams, cardigan and willow are another recommendations of beautiful looking MVs 🤤
This was a fantastic reaction- please do more TS reactions with BOTH of you!!!!!!!! Oh, and yes, there is a behind the scenes for this video, and it was shot on location in NZ
It was really fun to watch you and your father interact and discuss what was going on. A lot of years of experience between the two of you and a lot of knowledge to go along with it. Both this and the Niall videos have a lot of variety in their transitions between scenes, but so very different. It was interesting to hear what you felt was live vs. studio green screen. CGI is getting so good in the affordable range, it has become more difficult to tell. Thank you much.
I love this collab reaction. more like this please!
of course with more taylor swift music video.
This music video is a masterpiece 🙏, btw the necklace she is talking about at 13:00 is a necklace that harry styles gave her, it also features in her music video "style". I love your vidoes they honestly make my day.
what a fantastic choice! one of my favorites of her early songs (the one i'm most looking forward to on 1989 TV) and probably my favorite of her videoes. thank you gentlemen!
I think the 23:51 scene is like her realization in the back of her mind that despite of all those anxiety and pain, she got herself of where she is now and it's Good for her.
That's a great observation!
1989 Taylor's Version will be out in a week or so. I can't wait to listen to it on repeat!
OMG you and your dad are so cute together! You both clearly love your vocations!
I love your videos and learn so much, but I can’t express how great it is to have your dad on board! These are so cool!
Thank you so much! These videos are so much fun to do!
the "the chosen" shirt ❤❤
nest one HAS to be the Ready for it mv
Not me thinking the wolves were CGI. damn! I love this music video, there is something simple about it but also complex at the same time. The way it gets more intense as the song does is awesome.
This was a great reaction and dissection of this video. Thanks y'all!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I’m here to learn, I know nothing about filming.
Thank you for explaining this. You are very informative, interesting and helpful.
Loved having your dad's perspective as well so much
I love a dude that can recognize NZ ❤ Well done, that was Queenstown, what a magical place
I'm REALLY addicted to see you reacting videos!! Love it!
Thank you so much!!!
Love your dad’s The Chosen shirt!
i've never been so early 😭😭😭 so excited for this
Lol, I can see why now! this video was perfect!
Super great to see your relationship with your Dad! He looks so good , I mean I don’t know his age but just assuming from you he looks good :)
Just Taylor being legendary
Absolutely loved your guys' commentary!!!! And there is indeed a behind the scenes... multiple I think? If you want to do a followup reaction to that I would LOVE to see it!!!
Your dad is awesome, what a great video.
Thank you!!!
Love this!!! Please make more videos with your dad!
