In this Video Editor Reacts, I react to Taylor Swift - Shake It Off. This was my first time watching this music video and what a fun one to do a reaction to! I like that people use "she can't dance" as a dig about her to this day, when her career biggest single went "yep, i can't dance, here's a video about it."
This is one of the reasons I love her and believe she is a great role model - she always takes the digs people throw at her and turns them around to show that she 100% owns who she is and doesn't care what haters think.

Also she put in the hours going to ballet 🩰 practice almost every day during 1989’s lead up and after…that’s where all the paparazzi NYC photos came from during this era…outside of her dance studio and apt. Plus, she became one of the best dancers on stage on her Reputation tour and now! 🎉
And yes, those are fans at the end. The story for it is lovely, too. She cherry-picked 100 fans from Twitter, Instagram, and fan letters. They were all bused onto the set with no idea why they were there or what was going on - and at this point, no one knew Taylor had a new album coming out, either - and basically told “hey, new album, new song, wanna dance in the video with me? Just sign this NDA…”
(And shockingly, all the NDAs worked. No one, not a single person, leaked that she was filming a video. All the dancers, everyone on set, all the crew, signed NDAs. Cell phones were locked off site. Boom boxes were directed outwards playing metal so passers by wouldn’t hear a new Taylor song. AND everyone kept it a secret for TWO MONTHS! Can you imagine?)

@@NYandAZ Taylor talks about it in one of her secret session videos, and there was media coverage of it. If you Google, you can find information about it, including a couple of interviews with people who were there. ☺️
People love to hate this song but it actually says so much. The way Taylor leans into all the trash talk about her and embraces her inner dork is the thing that really made me love her.
I never go the hate for this song, it's like hating pure fun.

This music video made me so happy when it came out, she was continuously getting made fun of for her dancing at award shows, articles being written about how she “can’t dance” and how she was the epitome of “white people dancing” and that she should be embarrassed of herself. Then this music video premiered and it was such a “I know I can’t dance 🤷🏼♀️ but I really don’t care and I’m going to keep dancing, try and stop me.” And it was so cute, and I honestly think it was a big turning point in her career, because people were like, “oh shit, that’s just her being her authentic self and not caring what anyone thinks” and people stopped making as much fun of her. People started dancing with her at awards shows. She became a safe space for authenticity, which is one of the reasons I started liking her so much.
Ok but a separate standing ovation for the amazing background artists who were brilliant at the different skills 👏🏽

My favorite thing about this video is how it puts breakdancing and twerking on par with ballet.
When it came out, I was…uh…sleeping 20 hours a day… (long story) …but I remember people taking the twerking parts out of context and trying to make it demeaning. When IN context you can see that she goes over the ballerinas and under the twerkers, right? It’s another way of drawing parallels between them. And she’s failing at all the dance styles and elevating all the pros in a way that is clearly meant to say ‘all of these dances are fucking hard. Look at these incredible pros! I can’t do this shit, I don’t fit in here!’ And then finding her people, right? Her fans being goofy. And everybody taking a minute to let go of professional expectations and just have fun. But…clearly twerking is on the list of difficult pro moves! I appreciate that. I appreciate pros getting to showcase their moves and her highlighting how hard what they do is. Plus the reminder that the most important thing is to have fun and not care if you get it wrong.
There’s a series of behind the scenes videos-one for each dancing type. I really enjoyed them. Taylor REALLY went through it to record this video, haha. Maybe someday you can react to those, too, haha. If you want, of course!

RANDOM FACT: Taylor said she once was scared of horns but her producer made it sound good in this song. Guess she changed her mind!
She has said that she wants this song to be the song that plays at a wedding and that one girl in the corner that never dances jumps on her feet when her friends come running to get up and dance. These were all intentionally 'bad' version in comparison to the very skilled dancers for each style. This is her song about having fun regardless of of percieved ability
Shake it off is the epitome of dance like no one is watching. As someone that would never feel confidante on a dance floor, I do indeed dance to this at the weddings
Super polished black floors used to be a hallmark of the dance sequences from the golden age of Hollywood musicals too.

There is a multipart series - a behind the scenes "The Making Of Shake It Off" you'd probably be interested in. She was constantly being criticized for her "awkward" dancing at award shows so, she's really playing that up in the video to prove she doesn't care and she's more interested in having fun than looking cool. She's trying hard to stand out as awful in contrast to the professionals to prove the point and yet, there were still people who didn't get the joke, that were actually commenting about how awkwardly she was dancing.
Taylor Swift has the ability to laugh at herself and it shows. It’s one of her most valuable assets in my opinion. Dad jokes are appreciated too.

The first 2 guys in the silver suits are Phillip and Fikshun, they both were on the show "So You Think You Can Dance" in different seasons, Fikshun won his season.

You are becoming a real Swifty LOL. I have always loved the energy and joy of this song and how she took a lot of trash talk and hate and just made it fun. (And not for nothing, this was the turning point too where she became not just a country music star but a straight up STAR - of all the genres. And that's kinda beautiful.)
I also absolutely love how much fun she has and how little she cares about being cool. Which, of course, is cool. TS is awesome.

This song was her basically saying idc what ridiculous things haters keep on saying about me 😝 which I really admire because it most be really hard having EVERYONE picking apart every single thing you do/say.

To this day when any of my 4 son's are being super grumpy I play this song for them! Immediately they are annoyed... but they also laugh and smile. Mission accomplished.
this is the only music video that she has, others are movies not music videos, things like Wildest dreams, Delicate ,I Knew You Were Trouble, blank space and so many more that you will be amazed reacting to !

There is a really cool documentary-type video where she went through how she made this, and at the end the fans come out and she surprises them. It is really sweet.

That fact that she is not doing what the others are is a metaphor for not doing what is expected so “shake it off” and don’t always think you need to be like everyone else. 😅

Apart from maybe the twerking in the chains and animal print, I really loved the music video. She’s fun and goofy and my favourite part is her running between the ballerina’s legs.

The throw/toss/lift (idk the correct English term) is actually fairly easy for the flyer, you just have to get over the mental block of being thrown in the air by other people
I dunno if this was on purpose in the video, but when you said “ghosts” it reminded me of “Band-aids don't fix bullet holes / You say sorry just for show / If you live like that, you live with ghosts” in Bad Blood, same album

That snake necklace is just a coincidence. This was at the VERY beginning of 1989 when she was actually friends with Kanye (or so she thought). Reputation was not even a seed in her mind. The Kimye thing occurred at the very end of the 1989 era, a little before she won the Grammy for 1989. Hence that Grammy speech she gave. Had this been after “snake-gate”/#taylorswiftisover party thing, than it could’ve meant something, but it wasn’t, so it doesn’t.
