Predators: We Defend This Unpopular Entry

  • 2010’s Predators is never going to be discussed above the first two entries in the series. It is what it is, but I think it gets unfairly forgotten and sandwiched between the AVP movies and what is the worst Predator sequel. Predators doesn’t match the out-of-nowhere success that the first movie achieved, nor has it hit the cult classic of the first sequel, but it has a lot more to offer than most either remember or would like to admit. Today we come to its defense!

    When I first saw this movie in theaters I thought it was good. Then I rewatched it again a couple of weeks ago. And I still like this movie. I don't know why this movie doesn't get more love. Underrated movie.

      It definitely has its shortcomings, mainly being interesting ideas that aren't fleshed out. It's got an ensemble of interesting characters, most of whom don't get any development. Having more than one Predator didn't add much to the film, as most of them get taken out pretty easily and aren't that memorable. It also emulates the storybeats of the original a bit too closely despite having its own interesting setting. That being said, it's still an enjoyable Predator film, but it's one where I always have this lingering feeling that it would have been better with some tweaks to the script here and there.

    Thank you! I've been saying this since the movie's release. "Predators" was so unfairly crapped on and it deserves more respect than it gets. I respect the gripes you had with it, but other than "Royce not figuring things out sooner," my biggest gripe was Laurence Fishburne in the second act. It felt like a time-eating subplot when the movie could've taken time to explore why these two predator factions were in-fighting. I would've preferred to just stay with the main cast, see their characters develop, and watch as they continued piecing things together.

    • @rianmacdonald9454

      agree fully there - drop Lawrence side plot, and should of explored the predator infighting, hell could of had the smaller one fighting a bit more with the humans, expanding a lot of their cultural. But tbf have no idea how they could of done that, as language barrier would of been a huge issue. Suppose that could of been the thinking and cut due to these issue's, and went with the fight we got. Just guessing, but yeah would of liked this explored. There is so much they can do with predators film, due to the huge amounts of worlds, other races, and the different clans, races with in the predators species. (currently reading some of the books, bought 8 for now, on my 3rd one, and really enjoying them) would love to see forever midnight made into a film, really enjoyed that book.

It expanded the lore a bit with another different variation of the Hunters we know with the Badblood Super Predators and them taking their quarry to a controlled environment instead of engaging on honorable hunts elsewhere. The idea of infighting within the species is an interesting concept that could be further exploited in future entries. Also the fact the Badblood Clan here is persecuted both by the Predators we have already seen like the Jungle Hunter as well as by other Super Predators stands out to be explored how different ethnic groups interact within their society.

      Arnold faced an alpha predator who hunts game in it's own environment, this movie has the type of hunter who flies to a game ranch and pays by the head to hunt captured prey released inside a confined area. Some fishermen use flys to trick the fish into biting, other's throw dynamite tied to rocks in the pond and scoop up what floats.
      Meaning I don't think these preds are the same caliber as what ran into Dutch on earth and that is why they died easier. I got a laugh one viewing thinking that this planet might be an old age home for pensioner predators who can't hunt without help any more. Instead of watching TV in the rec room all day they roam around a continent looking for confused and mismatched prey that gets air dropped into the Shady Hectares Retirement planet every 5 days.

      Yes… it was a dumb criticism by the guy making the video. As if Royce, one of a group of multi-National weirdos thrown together hours before is supposed to suss out and quarantine one of the group before he or any of them have fully figured out where they are, why they’re there or what they’re up against.

    • @analogicaleuphimism2078
      @analogicaleuphimism2078 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@colin5577 Not really a dumb criticism. Royce was heavily implied to have figured out that there's something off about the doctor but the payoff was disappointing. He figures out that the doctor paralyzed Isabelle and took him out and used him as a grenade trap, but the grenade trap didn't really do anything except disorient the Berserker for a few seconds.
      That twist was just thrown in there just to add a bit of drama and excuse Isabelle from directly participating in the final fight. Also the doctor should've been doing things throughout the film that sabotaged the group, instead of just revealing everything in the final act. Maybe he could've even stolen some of Nolan's predator gear and used it against the group given how his whole motivation is that he thinks he's just like the Predators.

      @@analogicaleuphimism2078 Perhaps, but you're sort of talking about something else and I don't disagree with what you're saying. I was just thinking that expecting Royce to have figured out the doctor from very early on was a bit much. As was said by someone else, a scene from the cutting room floor showed that Royce had figured things out earlier, but it was dumped because it undermined Royce's believability as a character. If he's too omniscient it's no fun for the audience. As for being disappointed by Predators... my expectations were low after the previous efforts and I was hit by a great opening scene throwing a bunch of elites back into the jungle, the Silvestri music was back and I loved the premise of the Predator game preserve. Throw in a great cast, the original Predator and ... bingo. Happy me. On the other hand, I watched Prey last night and was quickly bored watching Mary Sue Stands With Angry Face kick everyone's ass, figure out alien tech and then defeat a Predator single handedly just to prove to her tribe that a woman could.

    My idea for a sequel to the predators movie is as follows: It start with the survivals on the Yatuja planet has digged a big ring in the ground where they
    have seen the Yatuja spaceship land.When they comes out,they are supposed to fall down the round pit around the spaceship and the prisoners sets fire
    to it since they have poured something flamable down in it.The Yautjas dies and they try to fly the spaceship back to earth,but it's autopilot instead it
    takes them to the Yautjas homeplanet. When there the prisoners has to hide.And sees the Yautjas has millions of other human prisoners that they use
    for food by sending them through a slaughterhouse instalation. Our proteganoist decidedes to free all the humans and to kill the Yautjas. They finds a weapon storage
    and gives weapon and training to the freed human prisoners meant for food processing.A war breaks out,and they make their way to a Yatuja ship and manages
    to shortcut the autopilot so they can set their course to earth.
    But when they arrive at earth they realize that two Thousand years have gone by,and they doesn't reckognize anything.
    And that makes an eerie ending.

    Predators is solid, it has some fun things. I loved the three different Predators with their own style of tech and technique of tracking and attack. I LOVE Laurence Fishburne in this as a crazed Survivor. But yeah, Predator 1 & 2 are far better imo. I really loved the scene of Danny Trejo's character being dead and used as bait with the repeated lines of "help meee" and them shooting him, thinking they put him outta his misery, only for the call for help to eerily continue.
    And gonna disagree heavily with your remark that The Predator has anything fun about it. I know it has it's fans and defenders but it's such a trash movie and just besmirches the Predator license and character. It was non-stop joeks, an awful plot line thinking it was championing Autism and retcons the whole point of Predators hunting and their tribal way of life of the hunt & code. Nah, it can burn in the dogshit pile it is. The first AVP is for better than it and at least treats the Predator franchise with respect. It's unfortunate it wasn't a R rated movie and didn't do a bit better on the human characters...but I'll take them any day over Shane Black's godawful writing & jokes (yeah he had a decent role in the first Predator movie but the whole film wasn't that style, unlike The Predator).
    AVP Requiem is awful with its terrible post production of making everything pitch black and spending too long on the human characters.

    If you step back and look at it from a quasi military perspective, the addition of a Doctor to the group makes sense. Think of the group of soldiers/killers as a squad, with the Doctor as the "medic". I think that was how the audience was supposed to view Topher's character, as a resource that the Predators put with the rest of the quarry to keep them patched up, on the run and in the fight as long as possible to add more "sport" to the hunt. The fact that he turned out to be a serial killer was simply a twist that a bit of poor writing made obvious before the big "twist/reveal" was meant to be unveiled.

    • @daviddowsett1658
      @daviddowsett1658 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's not what I took, he simply is a human predator like the rest of the team, so he got "Selected" for being a predator, I don't think predators evaluate 9-5 standard jobs, so you can be a tool, that's overthinking it, just if you are a killer or not.

With some better practical effect gore over the course of the film and I think Laurence Fishburne’s character deserved better exploration and should’ve lasted till the end. And I also think the music score was almost too muted. I saw the line-up and was like, predators? I don't remember that one. So, I went in blind and gave it a watch and was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed it quite a bit and watch it every n ow and then.
    First time I watched it went a little like this. Who's that? Who's that? Hey, the cool Mexican guy from the movie From Dusk Till Dawn. Hey, the kid from that 70's show. Hey it's Morphius. And I still don't know who any of the other actors in the film are.
    The only odd plot hole I kind of wonder about is the Dr. played by the 70's show kid. Each of the characters that the Predators abducted came from a background where they would do a lot of fighting, either street, battlefield, or guerilla. That would make sense as the Predators could watch the individuals in action, they could see their fighting prowess and pick and choose which victims to abduct. But the Dr. was a serial killer who killed his patients. The patients would have been laying in a hospital bed. And from observation alone him killing the patients would look no different than taking care of patients and administering medications. So, his character just never made sense to me.

Predators is a great entry and I watched it in the Theater in Marina Del Rey right when it came out. I never really was squeamish since I grew up watching 80s horror and sci-fi films, but that scene where the two Predators fight near the end turned me a little. I didn't hate 'Predators', but tbh, it's completely forgettable. The cast & production design do their best, but the writing was "just okay". I found the Super Predators & Predator Dogs to be silly looking. On top of that, a lot of the mystery surrounding the Predators is ruined simply by showing them so much.

Also, I found the cgi a bit weird looking, where the predators and dogs didn't seem to have much weight behind them (and the aforementioned sword fight scene - the predators generally felt very clunky and awkward). It was the 80s - Arnie was riding his crest of popularity - GREAT cast and most importantly John McTiernan was at the helm. It’s like Godzilla - you have the ‘54 and then everything else after. Predators is IMO the best following the first 2 films - and the one time we’ve been given a rendition of the “bad blood” preds - ones for whom honor doesn’t really play much of a role - ie whatever it takes to get the job done (albeit Falconer went hand-to-hand with Hanzo).
