WTF Happened To The Return Of The Living Dead?

  • When Night of the Living Dead released in 1968, it spawned two very different zombie series. First, was director George A. Romero's Dead franchise, which continued with Dawn, Day and Land (amongst others we won't mention here out fear of them being remembered). Then the other writer of Night, John Russo, had a series of his own that would fall under the Living Dead moniker. While his involvement lessened by the time the movie was actually made, we were left with an insane comedy/horror hybrid. So join us today as we cover The Return of the Living Dead.
WATCH OR OWN THE FILM HERE: amzn.to/3Szx1Ti
    Written by Eric Walksuski
    Narrated by Tyler Nichols
    Edited by Tyler Nichols
Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon
    Executive Producer by Berge Garabedian
SERIES SYNOPSIS: Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs. Either way, we have to ask: WTF Happened To This Horror Movie?

Absolute classic, from the cast to the practical effects, to the soundtrack, it's probably the greatest Zombie film ever created, it even came up with the concept of zombies eating brains. A gang of 1980s punks accompanied by Tommy Jarvis fighting off waves of zombies and a hungry Tarman, it doesn't get much better than that. George a remero may have some what created the modern zombie we all know now, and generated many classics himself, but - "The Return Of The Living Dead" is simply the perfect 80's Zombie film.

Growing up In the 80’s and bike riding down to our local video store, renting a few of these crazy movies was very fun.
My brothers and I were 14 years of age and below.
I was 8 in 1985 and the video store owner didn’t give 2 craps how old we were and let us rent “ scary movies”
We’d go watch them at a friends house whos dad had an old tv in the garage .
We set up a crusty old couch and watch movies late into the night .
Then my brothers and I would ride our huffey’s back home across town around 11 pm.
Yup, the 80’s were a wild time for us kids .

Man I loved reading your comments! It brings back so many memories of my on. I was the youngest of 4 kids but luckily I had a cousin that was a few months younger than me. Every weekend my uncle (jis dad) would bring us to rent a horror movie and the three of us would watch them together. I later moved close to a Video Warehouse so I started riding my bike to the warehouse to rent horror films. This current generation will never understand the thrill of walking into a video store, smelling the boxes, and viewing the cover art. Those were definetely the good old days. Don't get me wrong, I love Netflix and other streaming but nothing will ever beat the days of video stores. That was a slice a pure Americana!

      Good ole days huh
I remember riding the old Huffy bikes and my little brother had a freaking cockroach on his collar , we tried flicking it for him, he thought we were messing with him, he started speeding up till we got to the video store, he jumped off his bike and ran in . We chased after him, the owner yelled at my older brother and I , cause he thought we were trying to beat him up, we said no, we’re trying to tell him that he has a freakin cockroach on him, then my little brother started freakin out and running all over the place.
The owner said “ oh hell no, y’all get out and take that cockroach with you, just then a random person walked in, all dirty from working in the apple orchards, the guy walked out with us and asked us why the owner just called him a cockroach.
That day was hilarious, we rode back with no movie, but we did go get some burgers. We teased our little brother and said hey, you gonna feed the cockroach some fries or what .
      Good ole days

The Return of the Living Dead is the GREATEST and BEST zombie film ever made. I would love for someone hyper competent to do a tv show that revisits this specific film's feel, horror, characters and retells the story, yet also expounds more into the lore and science of the ghouls themselves, as well as the original incident in the VA hospital that eventually lead up to the events of RotLD. A lot of people mistakenly consider this film as slapstick comedy, but it really isn't. This film takes it premise quite seriously, and the only comedy comes from the character's reaction to the outright absurdity and horror of ghouls coming back to life, craving brains. I honestly believe people confuse the mediocre sequel (which contained instances of slapstick comedy) with the generally scary original, that happened to contain instances of dark humor.
This movie contains the only zombie ghouls that genuinely terrify me. These are genuine graveyard ghouls, fresh from out of the ground. They can't be killed, they can't be stopped, they can move fast and never tire, they can't be reasoned with, yet they're just as intelligent as you and I... well, just as intelligent as I am. I don't know how intelligent any of you actually are. You could be a bunch of complete morons, for all I know. But you more than likely love this excellent film as much as I do, so you have some proof of competence😅

    I f**cking LOVE this movie!!!
It is often said that every film's first scene teaches you how to watch the rest of it. The first thing you see as THIS film opens is plain white text against a black background that says something like:
"This film is based upon a true story. Not even the names of the people or business herein were changed."
Cut directly to the first actual shot, which is the front of a three story building with a large sign on it with the words "U-Need-A Medical Supply" printed on it. THIS film just taught you how to watch the rest of it with it's first SHOT!

Ok, I was 8yrs old when this came out. I always loved horror but zombies/the dead was always my favorite. This movie scared the hell out of me! Story time, my mother told me a tale that the reason they embalm dead bodies is to keep them from coming back, and that one day screaming was heard coming from the cemetery down our road and it was discovered that a recently deceased tried clawing it’s way out of its coffin!

You know, I'll also say..... It really shows when a director has the cast work out scripts before shooting. Not only does it make the actors feel like it's more of a community theater type thing(going over and over the lines) it just ends up making the dialogue in a film feel much more natural. Reanimator did this too and you can really feel the dialogue (like this film too).flow so much better and people playing off one another feels more natural.
And part 3 was done by Brain Yunza and is the greatest film in the series after part 1.
I remember being so excited about part 4 and 5. And then reading that Scifi channel.was doing them. They are awful, awful films. They even tried in part 4 to do the robot zombie thing from part 3 and somehow managed to fuck that up too.

Great vid as always, about one of my favourite movies of all time (I'm old enough to actually have seen it in theatres!) BUT you've made a terrible mistake:
@ 2:45 -> I don't know what Tom Fox looks like, but your red arrow points to Tony Gardner, one of the special effects crew, I think he was responsible for the talking half undead corpse (which he is casually carrying in the picture). That guy has had a very impressive career after that, just check his IMDb page and you'll see! 👻

I have loved this movie since day one and have in my own small way tried to champion it whenever I can. The brilliant, intense manic energy runs like a live wire through this whole production and nobody or anything in the production ever seem to miss a beat. To lovers of horror the comedy is woven through so seamlessly that you can't help but to be entertained. The -admittedly- small connection with "Lifeforce" I was previously unaware of. This intrigued me simply because if one is looking for a truly, epically gone wrong movie one need look no further than that hot mess. I would recommend it to true fans of cult trainwrecks as it's one of the worst, most confusing movies ever made. Thanks for the enjoyable re-visit.

I literally just came upon this movie a few weeks ago on Tubi I believe it was. I had no idea where it fit into the canon of the Living dead films or that it was an actual part of the legacy that included Romeros original. Being a horror movie fan to a certain degree I was overjoyed with the entire film. The special effects were, for the time, great! As least as far as I'm concerned. I'm sure many agree. This is such a great film. Outside.of Texas chainsaw massacre (I think I've told the story here about my brother telling me the girl who gets hanged on the hook was real when I was 8 or 9 when he forced me to watch it with him) this was another one of the first flicks to scare the shit out of me. I was like 10? And ROTLD was coming on channel 36. Not cable, antenna. And they used to play all kinds of horror films on this channel in Atlanta . Slugs, chopping mall, that movie with Burt Reynolds and dude from KiSS Runaway.
I begged my.mom.to watch ROTLD that afternoon and she said ok. When tarman came out in the basement. I was done. I was so fucking scared. Then my mom chased me around the house for like an hour pretending to be a zombie. Love the music of this flick. Have a first pressing of the soundtrack. I saw Roky Erickson before he died, twice!

It's amazing how many actors known for Westerns have been in horror movies. Royal Dano and Chuck Connors for example.
4:43 "Give yourself a screenwriter's credit!" ~Mike Bracken the Horror Geek
11:12 From the audience's perspective, that could be a double feature!
11:26 Possibly because "Return" has more humor and fun, while also being horrifying (especially given its fatalistic ending). Romero's pic-chah, by comparison, is yet another vehicle for yet another one of his preachy diatribes (while also being fatalistic). Captain Rhodes was a jerkweed, but his idea of dealing with the zombie plague from a warfare perspective actually makes sense. You put a good leader like Roland from the Borderlands mythos (insert reference to 'The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned') in that position, they'll get positive results.

It says a lot that this film has so many cool scenes that half the time I forget Linea Quigley is 95% naked for most of the film. 😁🤣
The 95% bit is from an interview Linea did years later where she mentioned they had her use a "barbie patch" to avoid it counting as full nudity. Basically a sticky, strapless skin-toned thong that from a distance gave a barbie-like smooth profile.
