  • BMW R1250GS Rallye, Adaptive headlights, what are they and how do they work? We also look at cornering headlights and compare the technologies. Adaptive headlights… should you tick this option when you order your new GS?... Absolutely yes.
    This is the seventh episode in this new series looking at the R1250GS. I have now decided to purchase the bike from BMW, I was not expecting to do this at the start of the test period, but the GS has proven to be a very capable motorbike.
    From this point onwards, the series changes from a long-term test to an owner’s review, and I have plans to make changes and modifications to the GS. I will continue to share, what I think about this amazing motorbike and the incredible BMW 1250 engine.
    I will also continue to release several “Tips and Tricks” episodes, for helping you understand how to use the TFT and menu system and how to get the maximum from the different riding modes and settings. I will also cover the Navigator 6 and the BMW connected app.
    I hope to upload 1 new video each week during this first season, so please Subscribe and press the Bell notification button (This will help the channel grow and develop), and of course you will be notified when the next episode is uploaded. Thank you, Carl
    If you have any requests or content suggestions about the BMW R1250GS series… just let me know. Carl

    Great content Carl, I have owned 47 motorcycles in 55 years, my first GSA 1250 a 2021 year. you are definitely filling in all the tech gaps BMW does not give us owners. BMW should be supporting your channel you are doing their work and deserve much credit ! We will be watching and recommend your channel to others ! Again thanks and well done !

      Hello UFO Hunter, that's a lot of bikes...quite amazing 👍. Thankyou for the compliment, I will let you tell BMW they should give me a part time job explaining their technology... lol.
      Have a great weekend

    Great video, it seems that you are saying the high beam is not adaptive, just the low beam, correct? Looking at the test mule pics of the 1300, I'm guessing they may have gone to cornering lights instead of the dynamic.

      @justthewayitis  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Eric and welcome to the channel, yes just the dip beam reflector it’s not needed on full beam as the spread of light is very different

    Hello. Back in 2007 my R1200 had a lovely storage place under the seat for my Anus U-Lock. Do the later R1250GS bikes have this facility. Thank you Great videos. John

      Hi, I don't have a 2007 model to compare the space with sadly, so it might be worth popping into your local dealership to check. To be honest there is not a lot of storage space on the 1250.

    Thanks for your videos. I am slowly looking from going from a 2011 1200 GS all the way to a 21 or newer 1250GS. So your videos are super useful for a wannabe 1250 buyer/owner.
    Up till now I've held back from upgrading as I really like the last of the oil/air cooled. I am beginning to think I am missing some good features and your videos are the reason.

    Hi Carl, a really useful video where you’ve explained the technology in a very accessible way - a great skill! A quick question: I’m UK-based; do I need to adjust the headlights when I take the bike to France and the rest of Europe? If so, can you suggest a link that explains how? Cheers, & keep up these videos, they’re genuinely excellent.

    • @justthewayitis
      @justthewayitis  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, you haven’t mentioned which year or version of headlight you have so it’s hard to advise.
      But the 1250 led version has a very flat and rectangular beam pattern which works well for both LHD and RHD so I don’t think for a tour in Europe you really need to do anything.
      Apart from locating the headlight height adjustment dial before you leave so you can lower it if needed while away.
      Have a great trip and thank you for your feedback 🙋🏻‍♂️

    Hi Carl, I discovered your channel just a few days ago and I am very pleased. I own a BMW R 1250 GS 2022 and would like to adjust my aux lights with my main headlight. Do you have a video on the subject?
    Thanks for your precious infos.

    • @justthewayitis
      @justthewayitis  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Marc, welcome to the channel and Hello to Three Rivers. No I do not have a video for this, but the simplest way is as follows.
      First make sure you are happy with the height of your Main Dip Beam light.
      Then ideally use your garage door and at night mark the Horizontal line that the headlight beam makes onto the garage door with tape.
      Then turn on your Aux lights and adjust them to just UNDER the tape line and make sure they are evenly matched from left to right.
      I hope this helps Marc.
      Best wishes Carl

    Thank you Carl. The slot I’m talking about was specifically designed under the seat to take the Abus U lock (minus the Lock) If you can imagine after removing the seat you could just insert the U section into the special bay just over the rear light. So useful.

    Hi, I found your video very interesting, I would ask you, nevertheless, to check the summary explanation at breaking and accelerating point when it is said that the light goes down and up respectively (11.33 min). Isn’t it the contrary ?

    • @justthewayitis
      @justthewayitis  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, it might be the words I use as I say ( the light's DONT dip when breaking for corner entry) and ( the light's DONT raise during acceleration) both of these statements are correct.

    Great video Carl. Apologies if this question has been asked already but what headlight protection do you recommend? I pick up my new GSA on Thursday and I’d like to take your advice to get some headlight protection

    • @justthewayitis
      @justthewayitis  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Andrew, congratulations on your soon to arrive GSA.
      With regard to headlight protection in some countries it’s not allowed so make sure you are aware of any local laws that restrict you from fitting one.
      Then you have lots of choices. I decided on one from WRS in Italy 🇮🇹 as I wanted something discrete and simple, but there are lots to choose from. I think I put the part number in one of the video description in the 2 accessories videos.

    Hi.
    I am currently looking at buying a 1250 GS TE and the Møre information i have the better choice i can make and i like loads of information on any bike i have bought.
    I currently have a triumph T120 black and i love BUT i want to go touring again.
    I had a yamaha FJR1300 and loved it but that was 12years ago so times have changed.
    I actually did not consider the GS to expensive too heavy too gig to tall for me (29”) inside leg but said to no i should go to a dealer and get some information about the bike speak to a salesman and see what the bike is like.
    Well he pulled out a GS 1250 Treble black LOW SEAT and i was sold totally flat footed so test drive in a few weeks.
    Thanks for the videos really helpful the info the better
    Thank you

      @justthewayitis  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi John welcome to the channel, the GSA does have taller longer travel suspension, the GS is a little lower, plus you can have a low seat fitted (as you have seen) but also they have a low suspension version which is also great if you need extra security with your feet firmly on the floor.
      Mine is a standard GS Ralley so when I’m alone on the bike I have the seat set to high, with just the balls of my boots on the ground, but when riding two up I lower the seat so that I have almost flat boots on the road.
      Have fun on your road test 😉
      Kindest regards Carl

      Hi Gary, good morning, possibly you just need a software update. Mention your error code to the dealer and ask for the latest software updates to be installed. Recently dealers wont perform an update without an issue to resolve. So you have the perfect reason. 👍

    We rented a 2020 1250GS for our 10 day vacation in Greece. Both me and my wife were extremely happy with the bike. I got an offer from my dealer for a 2023 1250GS, which is going to be available spring next year, but I only have a few days to decide. I am going through your videos to help me reach a final decision. Unfortunately adaptive LED headlight is not an option.

    • @justthewayitis
      @justthewayitis  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Mifili, and welcome to the channel, have they offered to retrofit the adaptive headlight when it becomes available? (Triumph are currently offering this service on their new 1200) ... if that answer is a no, the question is how much riding you and your wife might do at night. The adaptive headlight is VERY good, and if you ride at night on country lanes it is simply brilliant. But....if it's not available is that reason to not buy the GS ?.
      Good luck with your decision and which colour option might you choose...
      Kindest Regards, Carl

    I really like your videos as well as your excellent and clear narration. I would like to mention that your use of the term “Angle-of-Attack” in this video is not correct. You should have used the term “Angle of Incidence” which may be more appropriate. These two terms are mostly used in aviation (for aerodynamic purposes). The Angle of Attack is the angle between the chordline of the wing and relative airflow during flight. This angle is very critical to the success of the flight, too large of an angle of attack (~18 degrees depending on the airfoil) will cause the wing to stall and the plane departing controlled flight. However, the Angle of Incidence is part of the design of the aircraft, and it is fixed (at least something the pilot cannot mess with 😊). It is the angle between the same chordline of the wing and the longitudinal axis of the fuselage.
    For many years motorcycles light beams had a fixed angle of incidence, even so some could be manually adjusted up or down, as long as you had a spanner (wrench for the yanks). For a few years now, and thanks to the BMW engineers who have packed so much electronics in our bikes, we now have “Drive-by-wire” angle of incidence light beams. This should be enticing me to drive at night since I paid $400.00 for this option, alas my wife says it is not safe. It is even less safe at night since the introduction of Tesla models (sans Lidar, thx Elon!) which cannot detect motorcycles in front of them. Recently in the western US, two motorcyclists have been rear-ended and killed by Tesla cars driven under FSD. Watch your arse if followed by a Tesla 😊

    • @justthewayitis
      @justthewayitis  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Star, and good morning USA, thank you for sharing this, I will try to remember to use a different term next time. Thankyou for also sharing the important news about the Tesla cars....

    I've got BMW cars and I'm looking at buying one of their bikes. It's cool to know that the bikes also have this feature. On my current bikes they don't have any adjustment or augmentation to the headlight when cornering, so the inside goes dark. I hate it. Great to know the BMWs and some other manufactures now compensate for this. I will say the adaptive lighting tech on their cars does quite well at keeping the beams perfectly level when going over bumps and it turns the light into the corners which provides incredible visibility. If this tech works on the bike as well at it does on their cars it's going to be a game changer riding at night for me when I eventually get on of their bikes.

      Hello Seabiscuit, the best way is out on a lane or quite road at night, that's how I set mine up. This way you can choose between both set parallel or one set slightly lower.

    • @justthewayitis
      @justthewayitis  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Rusty and thank you for your comments. Maybe in the future I might do this, but the main reason I chose the Navi 6 over everything else is the wiz wheel the bmw control. I absolutely have to be able to zoom in and out of a map or route without taking my hands off the controls. I quite often lead on bigger tours, so this one feature is a must for me. Yes the XT is probably better at most things... but being able to instantly zoom in and out when approaching for example road diversions and being able to quickly look at my options is very important... especially if there's 9 other bikes behind me... smile.

    Very interesting video you explain things very well.
    Although quite a bit improved from my 2018 GS with LED headlights, I was tempted to perhaps trade in my bike for a brand new 2023, but a lot of them right now in the market, have retrofitted with halogen headlight because of chip shortage, which is unfortunate because I believe this Upgrade is quite interesting for night driving. I will keep mine maybe a year or two longer as I just did the big 2 year maintenance.

      Hello SB, yes quite a few GS/A bikes built and sold in 22/23 don’t have the adaptive headlight which is a real shame. BMW are slowly recalling some of them to refit the newer headlight but it’s going to take another year to recall all the bikes I think.
      The 2018 version was / is a great bike too.

    If you adjust the aux lights in your garage, be careful about adjusting them too high. Took numerous high beam flash "hints" for me to find out that you need to shine them at a target 15-20ft away to account for the parallax error of their offset position while aiming.

    Hi Carl my name is Jack , I'm 63 years of age and have been riding motorcycles most of my life starting at age 12. Having owned lots of different makes and models over the years fast forward to now after test riding different bikes I've been interested in I came to a decision to trade in my 2005 1200gs for a new 2023 BMW r1250gs Rallye. Like a lot of people I just wanted to check some more bike reviews ect... on the GS and I stumbled my way on to your channel. Hello Jack and welcome to the channel and thank you for your feedback and nice comments. I’m sure you are going to enjoy yourself on the new GS and as you have stated the engine and handling are great. They really are a great all round bike with more capabilities than most of us will ever use and explore. Technology has really been implemented very well. I receive similar feedback that owners eventually stumble on my channel and then enjoy the episodes, I am not sure why TH-cam does not push my content more… but I am grateful for the exposure it gets. More to come this year but currently it’s winter here in Germany and very cold with snow. But spring should arrive soon. Thank you again. Best wishes Carl

    Hi Carl, I'm a new GSA owner (Will be here soon/ordered), and a technician in the media industry, so I am finding your videos spot on for my new found "research project". I like to really dig into the details of these things, some prior to purchase to get me started with the "what is it", and some post purchase for the "why and how", after all, this is why we have heated garages for the off season, yes? So we have plenty of room for disassembly and see how it all works, before reassembly into the final re-worked project that comes out as somewhat of a monster that all your riding buddies want to know about, hahaha Great content, glad I found your series, (subscribe-CHECK!)

      @@justthewayitis Carl, I am not a fan of many of the color choices that come out of BMW Germany, so I decided on the Triple Black, and even then the bike will spend most of the next couple months being somewhat dis-assembled so many parts can be powder coated. I decided to go with 99% Black to make it different than most of the stock bikes, with a few small parts in different colors to break up full monotony and create interest/distraction. It is hard to make a GSA look different than the one its parked next too, but I have a plan. This is my relaxing passion to plan the project out with my down time while traveling for my work, and come home to the delivered boxes in my garage to build a unique vision. I'm from northern USA so a heated garage is beyond necessary this time of year, but like my Dealership said, March is almost here, hahahha , Thank you for the well wishes!

      stoic rider - I've always had similar thoughts for my GSs. I do have a film protector on the headlight to avoid chipping (which you can also get on cars), but I've never liked the appearance of any of the headlight protectors out there. I would say that breakages seem very rare (indeed can't remember seeing anybody report a breakage) - but then, 9 out of 10 GS riders seem to have the headlight protected!

    • @justthewayitis

      I think the other point is the GS headlight is Vertical... the lights on my multistrada and many other bikes are curved and I think that a stone would not damage these type of lights easily. Hence I've never fitted a protector or film on the multistrada. I do remember replacing two headlights on my Ford XR2 because they were damaged by stones, again Vertical lights and on an mk1 Mexico...but that's showing my age... smile.

    Excellent video, I'm very happy you chose the GS thus giving us this great content. Clearly this a very sophisticated headlamp unit, I have had a protector on and off on 2 GS's now as I often wonder if the guards compromise the light in any way? however with the current headlamp supply issue I'm now not willing to take the risk of a damaged unit (although I've never had a damaged headlamp unit in 30 years of motorcycling)

      Hi Simon, I bought the bike because it's so good at so many things, and I was completely wrong about the GS. My multistrada is quicker just about everywhere..... buttttt, I think with decent tyres and a little bit of adjustment it will be closer. I'm a little sad someone might think I bought a bike for TH-cam.... my next video will have very very low views.... it's a 1980 Yamaha xt, but I'm making it because I'm interested and not because of subscribers. According to the dealer there is an adaptive LED headlight and an adaptive LED headlight PRO. He doesn’t know what the difference is and neither do I. Do you know if there is indeed a difference between them?

    • @justthewayitis
      @justthewayitis  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Michievl, and welcome to the channel.
      There is only one LED headlight option.
      The pro means the DLR function is activated. I would recommend this option to be selected. When you ride during daylight hours you have a really nice bright DLR activated within the headlight.
      Your dealership should watch my videos to learn about the bikes they sell. Lol 👍

      @@justthewayitis Hi Carl, thank you very much! As always, your knowledge and your videos proof themselves very useful and educational. Your thorough explanations and calm way of presenting make them one of the best videos on TH-cam!
      After is sold my 1250GS I bought a Tiger 1200 but unfortunately the t-plane crank engine set-up, which is lovely on the T900, turned out to be not the best choice for the T1200. So after giving it a lot of thoughts, I ended up with a 1250GS Adventure. Due to the LED headlight not being available it came with a halogen light. It will however be replaced with a LED, but the dealer seems to be confused. I’ll direct him to your videos :-)
      Does the DLR function need to be activated by the dealer?

    • @justthewayitis
      @justthewayitis  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, thank you for your feedback 👍
      I think if I remember correctly the headlight DLR function is part of a pack that includes the running lights on the front. This gives you Amber indicators that are always on but return to normal indicator function when you use them for turning.
      Have a great weekend Carl

    • @michielvandepol6765

      @@justthewayitis So the answer from the BMW dealer is in. Like you said: there's only 1 LED headlight. The dealer saw 2 part numbers: one for only the LED unit and one for the LED unit plus the handlebar switch needed for the DRL. Apparently that caused confusion at the dealers side.
      So indeed no LED or LED Pro. Just the LED with or without the switch.

    Carl, that is the best description of how the BM lights work that I have seen online. I hadn’t picked the side to side movement and no one else has mentioned this at all. I am a bit of a light nut and have better than excellent lights on my car soI fitted a Cansmart and a pair of Baja Designs Squadron Pro lights to the R1250GS and the lights are good although because we have a lot of hopping wildlife in our country (Australia) travelling at night on a bike is generally unwise. Keep it coming. Geoff

    • @justthewayitis
      @justthewayitis  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Geoff, I can imagine you have to be very careful at night or not go out on a bike. We have not the same problem... but something similar. Here in Hessen/Germany we have more trees and forest areas per Sq-Km than Switzerland and with that comes lots of wild Boars and Deer, so we too have to be careful at night. I will have a look at the lights you suggested. Thankyou Carl

      Hi Nigel, yes that is a topic I planed to cover in a future episode, so thankyou for reminding me. I found the most important step for stable reliable connection between all devices....is making sure the bike software is up to date. But...
      Question. Are you using a Navi 5 or 6 unit?

    • @nigehaworth
      @nigehaworth 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Carl, good question, mine’s a Nav 5 coming from my previous R1200RS.

    • @justthewayitis
      @justthewayitis  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So the first step is the Navi 5 software update... not the maps but software version 3.50.
      My understanding is that this fixes several issues.
      This can be done through Garmin Express software, or if your not confident doing this, make an appointment with your dealer for both the GS update and the Navi 5 update.
      Let me know how you get on. Carl

    I would love to try these lights out on the serpentine roads that lead to my little house up a Greek mountain. The road bends 180 degrees and the inclination is 20 degrees. I thought of fitting a driving light attached to the front mud guard to see around the bend as the main lights shine in completely the wrong direction. I doubt whether these are retro fittable to my 19 model.
    You also mentioned the pitching of the bike during braking and acceleration. Obviously this is minimal on the GS with the telelever and paralever set up , but this would make a nice topic for a video?

    I bought an exactly the same as yours new 1250GS this spring only to sell it back to the dealer after 3 weeks and 2500km. I had several mechanical issues in 2500km (one being the leaking calipers, like the ones you had). Also, I just couldn't get along with the bike. It's noisy, very mechanical (as in not sophisticated, especially the engine and gearbox) and tiresome to ride on long tours. It requires a lot of labour to ride it.
    Good things were there too: lots of torque at low revs and very stable riding through corners. If you can't really ride a motorcycle properly but you want to go fast through corners nonetheless, this is the bike for you (and that is a compliment for BMW designers/engineers).
    However, as for the total package, it's too expensive for the older technology you get and there are certainly better options for that kind of money nowadays.

One guy in our bike club who is coming on our Norway tour in a few weeks, has the old Tiger 1050, which he loves very much. Its actually a lovely bike to tour on. Glad you have found something that suits you, am I right in remembering that the pro has longer suspension travel? And how do you find it in terms of comfort vs sporty riding?
      Carl

    • @michielvandepol6765
      @michielvandepol6765 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@justthewayitis Thank you, Carl. The T1200 Rally Pro does indeed have the longer suspension travel. It is very comfortable to ride yet one can still ride it very sporty when putting the suspension in sport mode. Truth be told, it surely doesn't ride as sporty as the GS. If blazing on twisty roads is your thing, you can do it with the Rally Pro but for sure you might be getting more fun out of a Tiger 1200 GT Pro or a 1250GS.
      That being said, if long road trips or adventures holiday travelling are your thing....the Rally Pro will definitely be a very good choice.
