Thank you 🙏 that’s very kind of you to say and very much appreciated… more than you can know. I was out walking this afternoon and contemplating stopping all together, so thank you. Kind regards Carl
I agree; watching these videos has helped me sooo much; easy to follow, easy to understand, easy to reproduce while doing it yourself. Keep up the excellent work! 👍🏻👊🏻
Hi, I’ve got a 2015 1200GS with dynamic ESA (but not auto-levelling) and Tractive front and rear shocks. I understand that as part of dynamic ESA, suspension damping gets progressively stiffer until the engine is turned off. Does this happen the same way in Road or Rain as it does in Dynamic? The default mode in Rain mode is Soft ESA, in Road mode is Normal ESA, and in Dynamic, it’s Hard. I can change the ESA in all settings. For the same ESA damping setting (soft, normal, hard), is there any difference in suspension between the riding modes? For example, is there any suspension difference when running on Dynamic ride mode with Soft ESA, and Rain mode with Soft ESA?
Hello and good morning, its a good question but i don't have a clear answer for you. I do not have experience with the 2015GS model fitted with ESA, maybe one one the channel subscribers can reply to you, and give you a clear answer to your question. But... I would think.... and this is just my own thoughts, on a 2015 model I doubt there is any damping setting differences (compression or rebound) between using (Dynamic plus soft) and (Rain plus soft) but I cant be 100% sure, only BMW could answer that question for you. Each time BMW updates the ESA and systems and sensors on their bikes and rules seem to change. For example when they moved from a 5 axis IMU to a 6 axis IMU (2021 onwards for the GS/A) that extra data stream was then incorporated into the algorithm that controls the ESA and its operation within the ride modes. On the later bikes the speed / distance travel sensors attached to the dampers measure the speed of compression, so as the bike brakes hard and fast the sensors detect this and can provide extra compression support. Kindest Regards Carl
What an exceptional show. Having ridden the new GSA for a year I've learned more from Carl than from riding 10,000 in the last year! Clear, comprehensive, and easy to follow. Exceptional work Carl!
Hi Jason, good morning and welcome to the channel. Thank you for your feedback and kind words. I’m pleased to hear that you have enjoyed the series, best wishes Carl
Very well done indeed! It’s good to see that someone who has decided to operate a TH-cam channel, has taken it seriously and undertaken it in a truly professional manner. Very informative, very clearly enunciated and a genuine pleasure to watch. It all make proper sense, to me. Thank you, Carl 👍👍👍
Hi Soup Dragon, thank you for your feedback and kind words. I’m pleased to hear you enjoyed this episode. The Dynamic ESA mini series took many weeks to put together. But from the feedback it seems the effort was worth it and owners now understand more about how to get the best from there bike’s Best wishes Carl
I wonder why so many people buy and drive these bikes without knowledge of the individual possibilities. Also many people don't even use these possibilities. Puzzling. Spending sooo much money just for showing others that they can afford such a bike?
@@keinname629 Well, not true, most people buy these bikes because they love the way the bike handles any road conditions, if anyone wanted to show others of their financial affordability, they would opt for a Ferrari, Lamborghini or other vehicles, not a BMW motorcycle that cost less than $30K. We ride, because we love to ride, not because we want to prove anything.
Phenomenal video series. You explained all these systems better than any other video I've watched. I believe that since you are a mechanic you know the depth to take these topics to and have the knowledge to relay the information in a clear way. Where as folks that are just riders give more of a glancing overview. I really do appreciate your work on these videos.
Hello Correy and good morning... thankyou, I actually also enjoy putting these episodes together as I still learn every day...it never ends. Smile. Best wishes Carl
Agreed. This is better than what BMW seem capable of putting out themselves. It’s great, but it also kinda highlights how useless BMW are. Not to take away anything. The attention to detail is exceptional and highly valued.
While I have a R1250R (and obviously, the Enduro part doesn't apply), I have enjoyed all your videos in this mini-series. Wonderful presentation and explanation. I also agree that BMW should give you some $$ for helping explain these features on their newer bikes! :)
Hi J, good morning, thank you for the compliment, the R1250R is a lovely bike and I had a lot of fun on it. "RickyTang" has just posted his 10,000 mile review which you might like, if you leave a comment... say hello from me, he's a nice and very friendly chap. Best wishes Carl
Hi Carl Absolutely brilliant set of three videos that I've watched over and over again. Excellent work, way beyond anything I've seen elsewhere. Thank you so much. For me I think id go for the throttle mapping of Dynamic Pro but dial back the ESA settings to Rain to extend your imaginary safety ring around the rider. Nice concept. I too would be more than happy to purchase your chart when you publish it. Just one question please. I'm picking up my new (to me) Dec 2018 R1250 GS (not Adv) next week. Is it the same as your video or will it missing any of the key elements? Many thanks Stan
Hi Stan and welcome to the channel and thank you for your feedback 🙏. With regards to your new to you GS their are differences between the early 1250 and the later 21 on wards bikes in terms of ride modes and heated grip levels and such, but they are still great bikes. I actually prefer the ride quality on the 2018 model, but you will have lots of fun with your new bike and you have lots of adjustments to get the bike to ride and perform to your requirements. I presume your Rallye will be the blue coloured one which has always been my favourite colour option 👍. I wish for you a fun time getting used to your new ride. Kindest regards Carl
I have just purchased a 2022 GS Rallye and this series of videos have been invaluable to me. I really look forward to every new episode as I’ve learnt so much from you. Thank you for what you have produced, it is much appreciated.
An enormous amount of information, research and knowledge sharing with us youtubers. Thank You. Good excuse for me to tell the wifey as to why I am riding sooo much. I have printed out you spreadsheet!
I had to watch this to refresh my memory. Thank you, Mr. Carl, for a wonderfully remarkable job of how my "Rhino" works !!!!! BMW needs to compensate you. You are a global treasure !!!!!! 🙂
Can you install Dynamic Pro mode to a R1250R that did not come with it from the factory. Mine has Rain, Road, Eco mode. Ive heard conflicting information
Hello and welcome to the channel, sadly you can’t not. If the R1250R does not have Dynamic ESA fitted from the factory it can’t be added afterwards. Sorry to give you the news Best wishes Carl
Hi Carl, I have preselected on my GS 1250 road, rain & dynamic modes. If I switch the DTC off, ( but I won’t 😳) does it come back on by default when the bike is turned off? Thanks, Marc, Quebec 😉🏍🇨🇦
Hi Franco, send me an email address is on the channel pages. I’m away from home at the moment so I’ll reply in a week when I’m back. Kindest regards Carl
Fantastic series! I loved this! So many questions finally answered! Does anyone know if this is different on a 2019 1250gs? The only options I have on screen with the stick plugged in is DTC and ABS and this is for Dynamic pro. I feel I might be understanding the chart wrong but it seems there are more granular adjustments available on the later models of the 1250? Can anyone tell me if the levels of adjustment are different between these models? Thanks to anyone that can help 🙇🏻♂️
Hello Invis, and welcome to the channel and thank you for your feedback 🙏 Yes there are differences after 2021 and as you mention it’s more about fine control. I’ve also have tested a 2019 Rallye and I actually liked the ride quality a little more than mine, but you still have plenty to play with on the earlier version. Best wishes Carl
Hi Carl, this is very valuable knowledge concerning my BMW 1250 GS 2022. Thank you so much! Is it possible to obtain the chart on the riding modes?( screenshot isn’t clear) 😉🏍
Hi Marc, good morning, thank you for the feedback, i hope to make the charts available later in the year, once they are I will let everyone know during one of the episodes, best wishes carl
Great series of videos, thanks for the effort you have put in. I have a question - is this level of adjustability only available on 2021 onwards models? I have a 2019 which has rain, road, dynamic-pro and enduro-pro activated. Am I able to customise each of these settings as outlined in your epic spreadsheet?? Thanks again, very educational and I agree with others here - required viewing if you want to get the most out this motorcycle:)
Hi Lewis, well there are more options with the 21 onward bikes but the earlier ones are just as good in terms of performance and usability and the rear preload setting seems a little better on the earlier bikes. Thank you for your feedback, best wishes Carl
I have a question, those bikes that doesn't come with dynamic and only have road and rain, the "road" mode should be like their "dynamic"? or with dynamic they really performs better? My way of thinking is that if you have road, dynamic and dynamic pro, there's a real difference, but if you only have road and rain, road should develop max performance of the throttle and engine at 100%, is that correct? or there's really an "extra punch" with dynamic? I've always had that doubt, but I read very diverse opinions. Hope it can be clarified. (if that's true, it's very sad that if you only have road and rain, you couldn't get 100% of the engine performance, because not having dynamic mode, that's not fair btw :( I have an F900R with just road and rain modes)
Hello Juan and welcome to the channel. All bikes have 100% throttle and performance. Dynamic Mode just gives the throttle a different more direct feel which depending on how and where you ride can be beneficial. If you only have Rain and Road, Road mode is not the same as Dynamic. In Road mode the power delivery is softer and gentler. Dynamic Pro gives even more control of things like ABS and traction control (depending on the bike model) Hope this helps Regards Carl
Amazing vid. I’ve had the 21 gsa. I’ve not really appreciated the art of config within the pro modes. Is the spreadsheet you compiled shareable? Understand if not. It’s a great presentation. Well done sir.
Hi Jono, thank you for your feedback and compliment, I’m pleased you are enjoying the series on the GS and GSA. The spreadsheet is not available. Maybe I will release it later and spreadsheet you see in the video is only part of a much more detailed one, so maybe I will think about it. Best wishes Carl
Hi Carl Many thanks, for the step by step explanation on how the available riding modes, affect the motorcycle. Also, the explanation as to how to adjust the pro modes, to suit individual preferences is made clear with step by step explanations. Just brilliant! Many thanks Alex
Just finished this mini-series. Fantastic production Carl; clearly a heck of a lot of work/research has gone into this and the end result really does work. I now have a better (not going to say 'full' just yet) understanding of these systems. I don't suppose there's anywhere that the spreadsheet can be downloaded so that I can use it as I'm stood over my bike and working out the various options?
Hi Martin Thankyou it was as you guessed a lot of work and many phone calls and emails to BMW technical team to put this series together, so I’m delighted that many owners are finding it helpful. The spread sheet is not yet available but I hope to have a solution at some point Best wishes Carl
What is the safest mode for driving off-road (hard packed gravel, grass, soil)? I’d prefer if MSR and DBC weren’t at their minimum - seems like these are useful so I’d prefer them at maximum. It appears you can’t tailor that
Hi Jan, for off road the Standard Enduro mode is the option most use, but I'm not really experienced off road so probably the wrong person to ask. Do you have a local BMW forum? That you could ask... Carl
Really enjoyed the video. Wonderful work you put into this video. New subscriber here. I may have missed it but when you change rider modes, does it also change suspension settings? I may have heard in one video the answer is yes but wasn't sure. thank you to anyone that responds. I have a new bike I am picking up this week so cannot check on the bike itself.
The simple answer is yes, but maybe rewatch all three episodes to understand exactly what goes on. You have lots of adjustments Happy riding with your new bike. Regards Carl
Aww man thanks! Here I was using enduro pro offroad in a very wet slippery and muddy areas and thinking it was going to help me have better traction. That was on the same day I took delivery of the bike going home. Worse time of my life on a bike. Did I say I dropped the bike like 8 times? 😅 rain mode it is now 😂😂
Well I wish you lots of fun adventures on your new motorbike, just try the different modes and find what works best for you and the conditions you ride in. Carl
Sounds like you can set up throttle and brake setting to load up the engine and brakes as in the videos be the boss of you motorcycle videos on you tube
Hi Paul, sorry I missed your comment ( sometimes it happens) I’ve had a look at your recommendation and he has some great slow speed tips. Apologies for the late reply Carl
Carl, Thank you very much for this set of videos (and really ALL the videos you produce). I picked up my 2022 Triple Black GS back in February of this year, and am still learning all the bells and whistles that it has while I properly kit it out (aka "make it mine"). I have been through the Riders Manual many times, but your videos have done a fantastic job of explaining topics in a straight-forward manner that we can all understand. I think after this video, I am ready to step up to the Dynamic modes, while being fairly certain I will shy away from the "Pro" modes until I have more miles under my belt. You mentioned you'd be happy if we learned at least one thing from these videos. Well I have learned plenty, so "Job Well Done"!! Keep up the fabulous work, Dan
Hello Dan, welcome to the channel and thank you for your compliment. I am pleased lots of owners have found the series interesting and helpful, that's really all I hoped to achieve. Good luck with the pro modes, they are useful at times and can be fun. Best wishes Carl
Carl ciao from Italy. Great video and I really thank you. However I have a small doubt: DYNA PRO MODE = you do not talk about or write about the "throttle position" in DYNA PRO mode...or I just miss it :-) the throttle position is to be considered "DYNAMIC" by default? I have the same issue when you touch the ENDURO PRO mode - ENDURO dbc; I listened carefully but I am not able to understand what happen to the DBC when working in ENDURO PRO - Enduro Mode...the cells are blank..... 😞Thanks if you may clarify to me
Hi Luke Dynamic and Dynamic Pro in terms of throttle response are exactly the same nothing changes. But in Dynamic Pro the bike (learns) how you ride and makes small improvements over time. In Enduro Pro: DBC and MSR and ABS lift detection and DTC wheelie control are all TURNED OFF so be careful Best wishes Carl
But In Enduro Pro mode you can change the settings for: DTC, ABS, Engine Just looks through your menu options. MSR and DBS are always turned off in enduro pro mode
Fantastic series... so much information incredibly well explained. Although riding a 2017 S1000XR, it gave me some insight into how the 3 options of suspension settings (rider/rider+luggage/rider+pillion+luggage) work on my bike. Thanks very much for your channel... I'll be looking out for any new content!
Thank you 👍, and I am pleased you found the series helpful to you and your S1000XR (lovely motorbike). The suspension can be a little difficult to understand but its a great system with good flexibility. Best Wishes Carl
Thank you Carl for this series on the BMW R1250GS/A. I had a fair idea of how these things worked, but you cleared some things up for me. I am on my third big GS now with my 2022 GSA. BMW continues to refine and improve these machines. They have given me many great miles and many wonderful adventures so far and, I hope, many more. Rhys Williams, USA
Hello Rhys, thank you for the compliment, there is actually a lot more to share, but the episode was already quite long so i had to cut 35 mins out. It's a shame BMW don't tell owners more about these great bikes. Have a good weekend. Carl
Hello. There are so many tutorials that start with, "I'm going to make this easy..." Then, about 5 minutes in, your completely lost. Your work on this series was superb. Thank you! Question: I did a screen shot of the spreadsheet. Any possibility that you can share the spreadsheet here so the print resolution is good? I will definitely keep this in my panniers. Thank you for your consideration of this request. David
Hi David thank you for your feedback 🙏, the dynamic ESA mini series took weeks to put together. Including help from BMW technical support in Berlin. I’ve not made the sheet available yet, possibly in the future… Best wishes Carl
My 2020GSA does not have the same modes as the later model I've tested it over the past 2yrs to dial it in. My other bike is a 2003 1150GSA and all that has is ABS on or off
Hi Tcat, that’s correct the additional modes became available with the 2021 year model version, glad to hear you got your 2020 model setup the way you like it, it’s still a great bike. Technology keeps evolving on each version Carl 👍
@justthewayitis I love the tech and the power of the 1250 but i have to say my 2003 fitted with a rare Ohlins GSA suspension with the heavy duty springs and I still prefer that ride on a long road trip to anything else. Thank you for the great content!
You’re very welcome 🙏 Although I probably shouldn’t say this I really loved my 2013 Multistrada with fully adjustable manual suspension, it also took a while to setup and set how I wanted it, but it was worth the time. Carl
@justthewayitis Newies will never understand the time and effort it takes to properly dial in sag, compression & rebound. I still turn off ABS and DTC from time to time just to remind myself to ride it proper.
Very useful video. That spreadsheet helped make some sense of the various modes. I only recently started playing with Dynamic, instead of just Road and Rain and found a whole new bike lurking there at the push of a button. I've yet to try the Enduro, but I'll have to give that a spin to. One question though, about terminology, for a non-native English speaker; is "off road" any road with no tarmac? Dirt/gravel roads? (Some context, I've been trying the Dynamic on gravel roads recently. But I'm trying to better understand what it does to the various safety systems when I switch modes.) Also, from what I gather, rear ABS isn't necessarily ideal on gravel? You can easily get a longer breaking distance?
Hi Thomas good morning and welcome to the channel. Yes any Road without tarmac is called off-road. Normally it’s advisable to use the first Enduro setting when off-road as the rear abs is deactivated and the rider has more control. The suspension performance is very different in that mode too…so it would be better to use this and not Dynamic , because in dynamic it’s to firm and you could actually damage the bike/suspension. I’m not very experienced off-road but there are some great bmw forums that might offer you more advice. Best wishes Carl
Hi Thomas Enduro Pro when selected turns off the link between front and rear and rear ABS. Enduro keeps the brakes front and rear linked and keeps ABS on but the setting is completely different from the Road biased modes. Carl
Hi Carl, thank you for a great explanation and presentation. After 50 years of riding I have taken a leap into modern technology with 2021 GSA. Is there anywhere I could get a copy of the spreadsheets you used to summarise the settings? I have taken screen shots but the resolution is not good enough to read with my aging eyesight. Thanks again your content is really useful and appreciated.😊
Hi Michael, firstly congratulations on your new GSA, they are lovely motorbikes and you are going to have a wonderful time with your new GSA. Which colour option did you choose? I still haven’t got round to making the spread available, as soon as I do I’ll let everyone know. Thank you for feedback on the GS series 🙋🏻♂️it’s great to hear so many owners enjoy them. Kindest regards Carl
Brilliant, Carl! VERY concise and easy to understand - bravo! I have a 2019 BMW GSA 850. Do you know if (1) BMW offers to upgrade my 2019 firmware to gain access to the additional riding modes Eco and Dynamic Pro?, (2) if yes, does the upgrade come as part of a service?, and (3) if yes, does the upgrade come at a cost or is it free (... I guess not but hoping to be proven wrong:))?
Hi GH, good morning, sadly I dont think this is an option for your bike. You could ring your dealer and ask just to be 100% sure. Normally BMW do not allow this to happen after the bike has been built and delivered. But... having the main software updated is very important and I do recommend you having this done during your next service. BMW are always making small improvement in performance so its essential you make sure its updated. Best wishes Carl
Hi Carl, what can I say that's not been said before on here about your videos, I'm planning buying a r1250gs next year and I stumbled across your vids while watching reviews etc. Excellent information, comprehensible and eloquently put across, give yourself a good pat on the back. Can't wait for further gs vids.....Subscribed.
Hi Kevin, then I'm glad you found the channel, thankyou for subscribing and your positive feedback. I bet you cant wait for next year, which colour will you choose? Carl
Thanks for reply Carl, I'm going for the tripple black TE, I will be retired soon and it will be a nice present for next March. Sorry this question is not on the correct video, but how are you getting on with the risers? On my test ride I felt I needed the bars slightly towards myself, which would make the ergonomics right for me.
The TBlack looks great and March is not far away. Yes the bar risers do help, although I only wanted to come towards the rider not up... but it's a good upgrade and it works for me with seat in the higher position. One option that is worth every penny, is the heated seat option which extends the riding season. Best wishes Carl
Hi Carl, superb video, thanks for all the work you did on this. A pdf version of your spreadsheet would be so useful. Looking forward to the indicator episode, I was riding with a mate on another 2022 GS & that alerted us both to how terrible the standard ones are, verging on dangerous I’d say & arguably worthy of a recall.
Sorry to hassle you Carl but would it possible to post a link to the terrific spreadsheet you have produced? Or I'm happy to send you my email if that's easier? Thanks again best wishes Karl 😊
Hello Adam, thank you, glad you enjoyed it. Subscribers are beginning to receive their kits, installing them and leaving comments... which is great. Best wishes Carl
My question, I love the bike and do not think I need dynamic pro. But when cornering, I find that the front tire feels like it is floating more than I desire. Is this the telelever or is this a setting?
@@justthewayitis Hello! Thanks for the follow up. Currently I use predominantly Road mode but also Dynamic at times. Tires are Bridgestone BattlAX ADV tires 41RG
So the isolation you feel is part of the Telelever system characteristics on the front, but you can make an improvement when changing the tyres. I use Metzeler Next Tourance 2 which have made a noticeable positive difference. You can also use Ride Mode Dynamic but with suspension mode Road, which is nice a comfort Carl
Dear Carl, thanks for this serie of videos. A lot of good, usable information. I searched for the Excel-sheet, you've used. Is this availible for download?
Thank you for the feedback. The document I created myself, its currently not available for download but I am thinking about this for next year. Kind regards Carl
I really wish you could leave ABS off or in aggressive mode with some sliding but have wheelie control completely turned off. Who doesn’t want to do wheelies? Come on BMW.
totally brilliant, BMW Motoradd should pay you for this stuff..thanks Craig, really appreciate all the effort you put in to this..I bought a GSA 1250 in June 2022..I've learnt more from you than anyone else...your presentation is second to none...
Hello! I've just recently purchased my first 23 r1250gs Rallye and very happy to have across your channel! Very educational and not voring to watch whatso ever! Thank you very much, will be subscribing and looking foward to more videos!
Thank you, Carl! Extremely helpful. Will go and double check my Pro settings and probably dial them down. I have 50/50 tires Metzler Karoo 3, would it be more appropriate to use Enduro or Enduro Pro?
Hi TS, thank you. The Karoo 3 is a good off-road tyre, I think your fine in Enduro-pro with this type of tyre as long as your happy with the safety system reductions, and you are skilled enough to ride safely in that mode. I wish you a lot of fun, best wishes Carl
This may have been asked already but I can't seem to find it in the comments - How do I interpret the blank areas on your Ride Modes Chart / spreadsheet? Such as, what is ABS doing in column J? What is the throttle doing in column M? And what is DBC doing in columns Q and R? One might assume these settings take on the settings and/or adjustability from adjacent columns, but I would hate to presume incorrectly and experience unexpected results. Any help?
Hi Paul, it’s fairly easy In column J there is no abs setting information because you only have 3 abs setting options ( not 4 ) which are highlighted to the right. The best way to use my chart is have look at it while sitting on the bike in the garage going through the physical screens. It will make much more sense this way. This way you will see that if there is a blank in the chart it’s because you have reduced options in the category. Again it’s better understood looking at the dash board while using the chart. Throttle response is blank in M column because you only have 3 options in that category ( not 4 ) If you have a specific question I’m happy to help. Best wishes Carl
Great video my BMW dealership explained virtually nothing on my new triple black 2022 GSA, dynamic road suits my riding style perfectly but the front wheel still lifts under strong acceleration often also accidentally with a rear top box full of riding equipment so hopefully I can now adjust things accordingly.
Awesome job describing all the features. Loved it. Have a new to me 2018 r1200gsa and had trouble figuring everything out. You described it perfectly. Thanks!!
Wow, I can‘t believe how much misunderstanding and misinformation could be cleared up if everyone, riders as well as dealership staff and even BMW Motorrad staff unfamiliar with the technicalities, watches this video and would read this phenomenal chart that you‘ve made! Kudos! Now if there just was a software update for my 2017 R1200GS to allow that same amount of granularity when configuring the Pro modes…
Hello Ritter, and welcome to the channel and thank you for your feedback 👍. I’m delighted that so many owners and dealerships use and learn from these 3 episodes, it was a lot of work but the effort seems to be appreciated. Let’s hope you get your updated software 😊 Best wishes Carl
Thanks Carl for this clear.. I have watched your 3 chapters, and subscribed. So, thanks for make it in the right balance of being easy to understand, but being technically advanced and detailed in explanations. That wasn’t an easy job to do, but you did it. And, also, as English is not my mother language, let me said, your speak and pronunciation is so easy to understand for me, didn’t need even read subtitles. Why? Are you the guy who recorded the listening records I learned in school? 😂 Thanks, thanks, and thanks again
Hi Boxer, happy new year and thank you for the feedback it's nice to hear, yes it was a lot of work for me to make. I am glad you enjoyed the 3 part mini series about Dynamic ESA, it is a lot to learn and understand and a lot to watch. Thankyou very much for subscribing 👍 Kindest regards Carl
Great video. BMW has really overused the term dynamic. Eco, Rain, Road and Enduro are all pretty descriptive. Sport or Race would have made more sense. Why can't DTC just be TC? Then Dynamic Pro with Dynamic or Dyna-Pro. Geez. Get a technical writer to reign in the engineers.
Carl, this series was outstanding, a huge help. So appreciative of your efforts. I just emailed you about a project I'm about to undertake, please mine that out of your inbox in a quiet moment and give it some thought. Would be delighted to collaborate with you on it.
Hi Nils, good morning, I will get back to you about your question. Thankyou for your feedback... I'm glad so many owners enjoy the episodes. Best wishes Carl
Clearly your are a very good pedagogue. I'll leave my 1200 GSA 2017 for a new 1250 GSA in two days and I was interesting to understand the new setting the bike. moreover you explain the pro of cons of the choice. You are a great guy. thank to spending your time for us.
Hello Patrick and welcome to the channel, congratulations on your new GSA. I hope you enjoy your new bike and have many happy journeys together. Best wishes Carl
Hi Carl. THANK YOU SOOO MUCH for this info! I am a guy who has to know how every little detail on these machines work and watched each of your 1250GS videos a 100x. Would it be possible to share a link to the spreadsheets please?
Awesome series. Just finished watching all three in a row. Super interesting! Thank you so much for doing it. I have been riding for many years (a lifetime really) and picked up a brand new 2023 R1250GSA (with all the goodies) earlier this year. Debuncking the ride modes and the damping pre-sets was on the top of my to-do list. I hope you don't mind but I made exact copies of your spreadsheets as I was listening along for my own quick recap later on and to explain it to my riding buddies. Thanks again.
Hello Alain and welcome to the channel, thank you for kind words and good to hear you enjoyed the Dynamic ESA mini series. I wish you lots of fun adventures on your new GSA Kindest regards Carl
Absolutely outstanding tutorial of all the modes on the 1250GS. I own a 2022 1250GS and I finally understood the details of every mode and how the mode itself is split between drive and suspension settings etc. Hats off. Fantastic!
@@justthewayitis Believe it or not I finally put the bike in Dynamic mode yesterday after owning the bike for around 7 months now and couldn't believe what a huge difference it made... totally transformed the bike for me. That's what prompted me to look into the modes in more detail. Wish you a very happy Christmas and New Year as well 🙂
Hi Carl excellent info , finally got it clear this riding mode, spring adjustment etc. great job! On a different subject, what about mirror extension? Would they actually improve visibility or shall i say mirror better visibility at the rear? Looking forward to your reply and to more videos. Thanks and Regards Carmelo
Hello Carmelo and welcome, I have not had issues with poor visability with the mirrors, but I know some owners fit wider ones, I think Wunderlich make a height extension that mount under the standard mirrors that improve things, perhaps have a look on there website. If i come across anything I will let you know. Best wishes Carl
Hi Carl. Just purchased a GS. Picking up in the next few days. Very infomative. Just found your channel. I too am a car mechanic for 35 Years. So much simpler back then. Have to embrace the technology. All the best.
Hi Ralph, welcome to the channel, firstly congratulations on your new GS and I hope you have lots of great adventures together... they are amazingly capable motorbikes. Yes... LOL... life was much simpler for us back in the 1980's and 1990's, when working on cars, motorbikes and commercial vehicles. I have a Honda XL (37 years old) restoration series coming soon, its been a joy to work on... so simple Best wishes for your GS collection day... Kindest Regards Carl
Hi Mike, LOL... thankyou. But actually I have recently started adding subtitles in 7 different languages to my videos, I've finished the last 8 episodes but still lots to do. Happy new year Carl
This has been a great reference for explaining what is going on with the control systems on these bikes. I have just taken delivery of a 2023 model GSA Rallye and have just been out on my first ride today. So far so good. As I don't intend to ride on anything more serious than the odd stretch of road works most of the enduro/Pro modes will be superfluous to my needs as will probably be the Dynamic/Pro modes but we'll see. What I think is missing is probably a Road/Pro mode so that you are able to swap and change some of the Road options. However that may be wishful thinking and I may be over thinking it. I'll be out on the road over the next few days trying out some of all this technology though hopefully it won't detract to much from the enjoyment of just "going for a ride ". After today I reckon a set of handle bar risers and a larger screen. 👍
Hello Neville and welcome to the channel, pleased to hear you enjoyed the Dynamic ESA mini series. Congratulations on your new bike and I hope you have lots of fun. Kindest regards Carl
Amazingly detailed information that is almost impossible to learn from BMW dealers! Thank you for this great work and very well presented information. I wish we could download the spreadsheets so we can study them in more depth, maybe even translate them into Spanish so that we can spread the word. Again, thanks for the great effort! Kudos! SUBSCRIBED!
Hello Panama, welcome to the channel, thank you for your feedback, kind words and subscribing 👍. It did take several weeks to put each episode together so I’m delighted owners are enjoying them. Best wishes Carl
I have never seen someone explain technical issues so clearly and easily transferred to everyday use, absolutely illuminating, thank you very much
Thank you 🙏 that’s very kind of you to say and very much appreciated… more than you can know.
I was out walking this afternoon and contemplating stopping all together, so thank you.
Kind regards Carl
I agree; watching these videos has helped me sooo much; easy to follow, easy to understand, easy to reproduce while doing it yourself. Keep up the excellent work! 👍🏻👊🏻
Nice to hear SB.
Thank you Carl 🙏
@@justthewayitis Do not stop your videos Carl. Keep them coming. I will surely watch and learn from them. Thanks.
Very clear explanation, thank you
Hi Rik, thank you 👍
Hi, I’ve got a 2015 1200GS with dynamic ESA (but not auto-levelling) and Tractive front and rear shocks.
Kindest Regards
Carl
Any way you could provide a pdf of your chart?
Hello, sorry not at the moment
Awesome! This video should be required viewing by BMW. Can’t thank you enough!
Hi Bruce, as always your very kind with your words. I hope you learned something, I know I did making the episode. Best wishes Carl
But from the feedback it seems the effort was worth it and owners now understand more about how to get the best from there bike’s
Best wishes Carl
Then a university degree in Riding Modes is required before purchasing any BMW motorcycles? LOL
Hello IronHorse.... LOL... yes.
Have a great Sunday
I wonder why so many people buy and drive these bikes without knowledge of the individual possibilities. Also many people don't even use these possibilities. Puzzling. Spending sooo much money just for showing others that they can afford such a bike?
Possibly this does sometimes happen, many house’s are way bigger than people need for example.
Thank you for commenting
Carl
@@keinname629 Well, not true, most people buy these bikes because they love the way the bike handles any road conditions, if anyone wanted to show others of their financial affordability, they would opt for a Ferrari, Lamborghini or other vehicles, not a BMW motorcycle that cost less than $30K. We ride, because we love to ride, not because we want to prove anything.
Hello Ironhorse, thank you for sharing have a great weekend 👌
Carl
Your welcome 👍
Hi Mark, thank you for your feedback and kind words. I'm pleased to add to everyone's knowledge. Carl
HI,great video. Please share a printable brakedown of the modes for refrence.
The chart is GOLD !!! Thank you so much, I`ve never seen a similar simple and complete explanation of the ride modes.
Thank you 🙏, I’m glad the chart makes it simpler to understand and follow.

Thanks for the video - it's without doubt THE MOST COMPREHENSIVE breakdown of all the modes.
Hi Ross, thank you 👍
An enormous amount of information, research and knowledge sharing with us youtubers. Thank You.
Good excuse for me to tell the wifey as to why I am riding sooo much. I have printed out you spreadsheet!
Hi 911, thank you for your kind words, very much appreciated. Best Wishes Carl
I had to watch this to refresh my memory. Thank you, Mr. Carl, for a wonderfully remarkable job of how my "Rhino" works !!!!! BMW needs to compensate you. You are a global treasure !!!!!! 🙂
Hi Kurt, thank you 🙏 and I’m pleased you enjoyed the Dynamic ESA series. Wishing you lots of fun with “Rhino”. 🙋🏻♂️
Carl
Can you install Dynamic Pro mode to a R1250R that did not come with it from the factory. Mine has Rain, Road, Eco mode. Ive heard conflicting information
Hello and welcome to the channel, sadly you can’t not. If the R1250R does not have Dynamic ESA fitted from the factory it can’t be added afterwards.
Sorry to give you the news
Best wishes Carl
Hi Carl, I have preselected on my GS 1250 road, rain & dynamic modes. If I switch the DTC off, ( but I won’t 😳) does it come back on by default when the bike is turned off? Thanks, Marc, Quebec 😉🏍🇨🇦
Hi Marc, I’m currently away from home so can’t check on my bike, but I think it defaults to back on.
Carl 🙋🏻♂️
BMW could learn a thing or two from Aprilia in terms of making the rider systems more intuitive
Indeed they could 👍
Absolutely fabulous explanation! Thank you so much for putting this together!
Hi Johnny, you are very welcome 🙏 glad you enjoyed it. Best wishes Carl
Hi Carl - can you share the spreadsheet? Thank you so much. This series was very helpful and super insightful.
Hi Franco, send me an email address is on the channel pages. I’m away from home at the moment so I’ll reply in a week when I’m back.
Kindest regards Carl
Hi Carl, great explanation of the riding modes, are the spreadsheets already available to download?
Hi JJ, send me an email ( it’s on the channel pages) and I’ll reply
Best wishes Carl
Fantastic series! I loved this! So many questions finally answered! Does anyone know if this is different on a 2019 1250gs? The only options I have on screen with the stick plugged in is DTC and ABS and this is for Dynamic pro.
I feel I might be understanding the chart wrong but it seems there are more granular adjustments available on the later models of the 1250?
Can anyone tell me if the levels of adjustment are different between these models? Thanks to anyone that can help 🙇🏻♂️
Hello Invis, and welcome to the channel and thank you for your feedback 🙏
Yes there are differences after 2021 and as you mention it’s more about fine control. I’ve also have tested a 2019 Rallye and I actually liked the ride quality a little more than mine, but you still have plenty to play with on the earlier version.
Best wishes Carl
Have you discussed traction control, wheel spin in corners?
Check out the ride mode chart 👍
Dynamic Pro gives even more control of things like ABS and traction control (depending on the bike model)
Hope this helps
Regards Carl
Amazing vid. I’ve had the 21 gsa. I’ve not really appreciated the art of config within the pro modes. Is the spreadsheet you compiled shareable? Understand if not. It’s a great presentation. Well done sir.
Hi Jono, thank you for your feedback and compliment, I’m pleased you are enjoying the series on the GS and GSA. The spreadsheet is not available. Maybe I will release it later and spreadsheet you see in the video is only part of a much more detailed one, so maybe I will think about it.
Best wishes Carl
Hi Carl
Many thanks, for the step by step explanation on how the available riding modes, affect the motorcycle. Also, the explanation as to how to adjust the pro modes, to suit individual preferences is made clear with step by step explanations.
Just brilliant!
Many thanks
Alex
Hello Alex, so now you are all set for some lovely riding time... thankyou for the compliment. Best wishes Carl
The spread sheet is not yet available but I hope to have a solution at some point
Best wishes Carl
You have lots of adjustments
Happy riding with your new bike.
Regards Carl
Wow - that is great content - well done.
Are you making the spreadsheet available??
Thank you 🙏
Hi Carl I have a honda benly 1979 6v with points fitted can I convert this to a 12v the same way you did the xt yamaha many thanks Dave
Hi Dave, I’ve not actually worked on that motorbike but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work, the parts from Kedo are fairly cheap to try this.
Carl
Please explain to us Tyre pressure .
Thanks
Hello Fahad, i will try to include Tyres and Pressures in a later video. Thankyou Carl
thank you for this presentation. it would be very nice of you if we could have theese documents in printable format (pdf).
Hi Stelberic and welcome to the channel. Thank you 🙏
Perhaps in the future
That's a nice bit of information, I wonder how it compares to the R1200* Ride modes.
Hello and good morning, thank you for your feedback 😊
BMW made lots of changes and updates and refinements throughout the years.
Carl
Very nice video. Thanks!
Is it possible to download chart?
Hi Marko, thank you 🙏 the chart is not available at the moment but I hope later in the season
Very good Carl, but I think I better watch it a few more time so I have fully got it. 👍🤔😳😊
Hi Trevor, good morning, if you have a tablet or iPad you can use those in the garage while your doing your installation. Best wishes Carl
Carl
There is not much that looks funnier than a fully loaded GSA with camping gear backing it into a turn!
👍
Very good video. Where can we download the spreadsheets?
Hi Branco, thank you glad you enjoyed it.
Apologies for the late reply
Carl
Keep up the fabulous work,
Dan
Hello Dan, welcome to the channel and thank you for your compliment. I am pleased lots of owners have found the series interesting and helpful, that's really all I hoped to achieve. Good luck with the pro modes, they are useful at times and can be fun. Best wishes Carl
Very useful, thank you.
Hi Paul, your very welcome.
Anyway I may get the Ride Mode Excel Chart?
Please send me an email, details can be found on my channel. Carl
😞Thanks if you may clarify to me
Hi Luke
Dynamic and Dynamic Pro in terms of throttle response are exactly the same nothing changes. But in Dynamic Pro the bike (learns) how you ride and makes small improvements over time.
In Enduro Pro:
DBC and MSR and ABS lift detection and DTC wheelie control are all TURNED OFF so be careful
Best wishes Carl
But
In Enduro Pro mode you can change the settings for:
DTC, ABS, Engine
Just looks through your menu options.
Very informative and useful, thank you very much
Hi Gökce good morning, thank you 🙏 and enjoy your Sunday 🌞
Awesome as usual. I wish i can Like this video more than once...
Hi David, well I have many videos you can give can give 👍 if you like. Smile... but thankyou for your comments, much appreciated.

I’ve not made the sheet available yet, possibly in the future…

Any chance of downloading the spreadsheet that you made
Hi Pat welcome to the channel, sorry not at the moment the chart I put together is much more detailed then the part you see in the video, regards Carl
Technology keeps evolving on each version
Carl 👍
@justthewayitis I love the tech and the power of the 1250 but i have to say my 2003 fitted with a rare Ohlins GSA suspension with the heavy duty springs and I still prefer that ride on a long road trip to anything else. Thank you for the great content!
You’re very welcome 🙏
Although I probably shouldn’t say this I really loved my 2013 Multistrada with fully adjustable manual suspension, it also took a while to setup and set how I wanted it, but it was worth the time.
Carl
@justthewayitis Newies will never understand the time and effort it takes to properly dial in sag, compression & rebound. I still turn off ABS and DTC from time to time just to remind myself to ride it proper.
Smile 😊
@@justthewayitis Oh, is it completely disabled in the normal Enduro? I thought it was Enduro Pro that let you completely disable read ABS?
Hi Thomas
Enduro Pro when selected turns off the link between front and rear and rear ABS.
@@justthewayitis Same as yours. :)
Great choice 👍
Many thanks for your quick follow-up, Carl. Sadly, I believe you are right. I will check with BMW and post feedback I receive.
Thank you 👍
Hi Carl, what can I say that's not been said before on here about your videos, I'm planning buying a r1250gs next year and I stumbled across your vids while watching reviews etc.
ThAnk you, very informative video
Hello Nick and welcome to the channel. Thankyou, I'm pleased you enjoyed it. Best wishes Carl
hi
good series, can you share the ride mode excel?
Hi Charlie, I hope to release a larger more detailed version soon. Best wishes Carl
awesome great vid. can you share the spreadsheet ?
Good evening Albert. I'll give that question some thought.
Absolutely fantastic information Carl thanks so much 👍 best wishes Karl 😊
Thank you Karl 🙏
Sorry to hassle you Carl but would it possible to post a link to the terrific spreadsheet you have produced? Or I'm happy to send you my email if that's easier? Thanks again best wishes Karl 😊
Send me an email please 🙏
Very informative video, thank you
Hello Adam, thank you, glad you enjoyed it.
Hi Brian, which mode do you mainly use and which tyres are currently fitted ?
Carl
@@justthewayitis Hello! Thanks for the follow up. Currently I use predominantly Road mode but also Dynamic at times. Tires are Bridgestone BattlAX ADV tires 41RG
So the isolation you feel is part of the Telelever system characteristics on the front, but you can make an improvement when changing the tyres. I use Metzeler Next Tourance 2 which have made a noticeable positive difference.
You can also use Ride Mode Dynamic but with suspension mode Road, which is nice a comfort
Carl
Dear Carl, thanks for this serie of videos. A lot of good, usable information. I searched for the Excel-sheet, you've used. Is this availible for download?
Thank you for the feedback. The document I created myself, its currently not available for download but I am thinking about this for next year. Kind regards Carl
@@justthewayitis , I have send you an email. Perhaps it can help you.
Hi, I will reply over the weekend, best wishes Carl
Great video! Very informative and comprehensive. I will definitely be using this as a resource. Thank you for your hard work. Best!
Hi Creed, thank you for the compliment. Have a good weekend 👍
Thank you so much ,well explaned I have learned a lot .Thanks again.
Hi J , thank you 🙏 your very welcome, best wishes Carl
Excelente video, I now fully understand the difference between Enduro and Enduro Pro. Is it possible to have the spreadsheet shared with us?
Glad you enjoyed the explanation Alex.
@@justthewayitis any chance you can share the spreadsheet for easy reference?
Hi Alex, no I’ve not released a downloadable version
I really wish you could leave ABS off or in aggressive mode with some sliding but have wheelie control completely turned off. Who doesn’t want to do wheelies? Come on BMW.
Hi Ryan, it's a legal requirement to keep ABS active so I doubt they will allow us access to which it all off. But I understand your wish...Carl
@@justthewayitis Sorry, I meant have ABS ON, but wheelie control off. KTM’s do this. It’s just safer when it’s wheelie time!
Hi Ryan, ok. No problem 👍 now I understand your comments... lol. Carl
totally brilliant, BMW Motoradd should pay you for this stuff..thanks Craig, really appreciate all the effort you put in to this..I bought a GSA 1250 in June 2022..I've learnt more from you than anyone else...your presentation is second to none...
Hi Andy, good morning, thank you for the compliment. Glad everyone seems to be enjoying the series. Its Carl btw... not Craig lol
well done! tu much
You are very welcome 🙏
Hello! I've just recently purchased my first 23 r1250gs Rallye and very happy to have across your channel! Very educational and not voring to watch whatso ever! Thank you very much, will be subscribing and looking foward to more videos!
Hello and good evening,
congratulations on your new bike and thank you for subscribing 🙏🙋🏻♂️
Have fun , Carl
Very informative vid 👌
Hello Nomad Biker Tours, thank you for feedback much appreciated 👍
You certainly have a beautiful country to ride your motorbikes.
Best wishes Carl
Excellent explanation , thanks a lot
Thank you 🙏
Bravissimo ,ottima spiegazione !!!
Grazie Nikola, thank you 🙏
Thank you, Carl!
Any help?
Hi Paul, it’s fairly easy
In column J there is no abs setting information because you only have 3 abs setting options ( not 4 ) which are highlighted to the right.
The best way to use my chart is have look at it while sitting on the bike in the garage going through the physical screens.
It will make much more sense this way.
This way you will see that if there is a blank in the chart it’s because you have reduced options in the category.
Again it’s better understood looking at the dash board while using the chart.
Throttle response is blank in M column because you only have 3 options in that category ( not 4 )
If you have a specific question I’m happy to help.
Hi Andy, glad you enjoyed the 3 part series and now you can enjoy more fun times on your GSA. Best wishes Carl
Excellent video and explanations
Hi Willem and welcome to the channel. Thank you 🙏 best wishes Carl
Big up for your videos 😁
Thank you, Christian
Awesome job describing all the features. Loved it. Have a new to me 2018 r1200gsa and had trouble figuring everything out. You described it perfectly. Thanks!!
Hi James and welcome to the channel, thank you for your feedback 🙏 and I wish you lots of fun adventures on your new GSA.
Kindest regards Carl
Let’s hope you get your updated software 😊
Best wishes Carl
Thanks Carl for this clear.. I have watched your 3 chapters, and subscribed.
So, thanks for make it in the right balance of being easy to understand, but being technically advanced and detailed in explanations.
That wasn’t an easy job to do, but you did it.
And, also, as English is not my mother language, let me said, your speak and pronunciation is so easy to understand for me, didn’t need even read subtitles. Why? Are you the guy who recorded the listening records I learned in school? 😂
Thanks, thanks, and thanks again
Hi Boxer, happy new year and thank you for the feedback it's nice to hear, yes it was a lot of work for me to make.
I am glad you enjoyed the 3 part mini series about Dynamic ESA, it is a lot to learn and understand and a lot to watch.
Thankyou very much for subscribing 👍
Kindest regards
Carl
Great video. BMW has really overused the term dynamic. Eco, Rain, Road and Enduro are all pretty descriptive. Sport or Race would have made more sense. Why can't DTC just be TC? Then Dynamic Pro with Dynamic or Dyna-Pro. Geez. Get a technical writer to reign in the engineers.
Good morning Joe, yes the descriptive words could be better. Carl
Thanks for putting this together very informative... I have had 3 GS's with Ride modes and ISA and until now never really understood what they did ..
Your very welcome 🙏
Hi Carl. THANK YOU SOOO MUCH for this info! I am a guy who has to know how every little detail on these machines work and watched each of your 1250GS videos a 100x. Would it be possible to share a link to the spreadsheets please?
Hi Zac, thank you for the feedback. I might release the chart later. I'll let you know. Best wishes Carl
Best wishes Carl
I wish you lots of fun adventures on your new GSA
Kindest regards Carl
Absolutely outstanding tutorial of all the modes on the 1250GS. I own a 2022 1250GS and I finally understood the details of every mode and how the mode itself is split between drive and suspension settings etc. Hats off. Fantastic!
Hello Ritesh, thank you for your feedback its always nice to hear owners that enjoy the episodes. Seasons greetings to you.
Kindest regards Carl
@@justthewayitis Believe it or not I finally put the bike in Dynamic mode yesterday after owning the bike for around 7 months now and couldn't believe what a huge difference it made... totally transformed the bike for me. That's what prompted me to look into the modes in more detail.
Wish you a very happy Christmas and New Year as well 🙂
Hi Ritesh, yes its quite a difference when you move to Dynamic, have fun with your settings. Carl
Hi Carl excellent info , finally got it clear this riding mode, spring adjustment etc. great job! On a different subject, what about mirror extension? Would they actually improve visibility or shall i say mirror better visibility at the rear? Looking forward to your reply and to more videos. Thanks and Regards
Carmelo
Hello Carmelo and welcome, I have not had issues with poor visability with the mirrors, but I know some owners fit wider ones, I think Wunderlich make a height extension that mount under the standard mirrors that improve things, perhaps have a look on there website. If i come across anything I will let you know. Best wishes Carl
Hallo Carl,
LOL Carl
@@justthewayitis Kein Problem, habe ich sehr gut verstanden. Vielen Dank Carl!
Danke Carl
I have a Honda XL (37 years old) restoration series coming soon, its been a joy to work on... so simple
Best wishes for your GS collection day...
Kindest Regards
Carl
Excellent explanation
Thank you Nick
Carl, when can we expect this in 10 different languages😂. Happy New Year and a huge thank you.
Hi Mike, LOL... thankyou. But actually I have recently started adding subtitles in 7 different languages to my videos, I've finished the last 8 episodes but still lots to do.
Happy new year
Carl
Can’t thank you enough for this three part series! I have a 2021 GSA and think this will change my riding experiences immensely!
Hi Brain Thankyou 🙏 I hope you now have fun adjusting the settings to suit your riding style and your local roads.
Have a nice Sunday evening
Carl
Amazingly detailed information that is almost impossible to learn from BMW dealers! Thank you for this great work and very well presented information. I wish we could download the spreadsheets so we can study them in more depth, maybe even translate them into Spanish so that we can spread the word. Again, thanks for the great effort! Kudos! SUBSCRIBED!
Hello Panama, welcome to the channel, thank you for your feedback, kind words and subscribing 👍.
It did take several weeks to put each episode together so I’m delighted owners are enjoying them.
Best wishes Carl
