The SOLUTION for the multifunction indicator issues, should be available later this week. I was asked by the manufacturer to wait until the new UK / EU website has been finished which should be a couple of days more. Most of my riding friends now want these lights on their bikes, so I'm going to be very busy over winter. Carl
Yes and installed on my bike ( 2021 GS Rallye) I’ve uploaded several guides to help owners install these lights and many owners have now done the same installation. Subscribe and go to my channel and your find all the information you need. Let me know if I can help Regards Carl

Just found your brilliant channel, I pick my 1250GS next week and after a break from riding of 4 years and coming from a standard 1200GS this explains all the modes very well
Hi Stuart, well congratulations for next week, and welcome back, you’ve picked a brilliant bike for your return. Thank you for saying hello Kind regards Carl

Hello and welcome, glad you enjoyed this episode and it helps you get more from your GS/GSA. There are 3 episodes in this Dynamic ESA series Best wishes Carl
Hello Carl. I just acquired a BMW R1250 GS Adventure 40th year edition back in June of 2022. Haven't even drilled down to much on the options available you've explained here as I've been fussing with 3 other bikes I've just added as I'm a new rider at 72 years playing "catch up" with riding here in the heartland of the USA. Now I see what those terms are about because as you've explained they used the same word to describe a setting at a different place! I'm now excited about experimenting with them as you being an excellent instructor having illumined me as to how they can be selected and for what purpose and effect. I better subscribe! Thanks mate!
Hello Tall tree and thank you for your feedback and subscribing. Glad to hear you have enjoyed the series and find the episodes helpful. Have fun on your motorbikes... Kind regards Carl
Thank you very much! You have done a sterling job making this video. And taking your time to explain in detail. I am now understanding and appreciating the work engineers have done on this bike
Hi George, welcome to the channel ...and thank-you, this is exactly what i hoped for, viewers understanding more about these amazing bikes and having a little fun along the way. More episodes to come.... but it does take me quite some time to put each episode together. Best Wishes Carl
A very high quality video and content. Thank you for your work ! Can't wait to see the episode on your new indicators ! Until now, (6 month of riding) no one told me I forgot to switch them of but I think it may be confusing for "cagers".
Brilliant. Thank you. Your knowledge is so helpful. Just one point. You mention this system is from 2021 onwards yet I had a Jan 2020 F850GS with ESA and all the function mentioned here so the system must have been introduced earlier. I just wish I had seen your video a while ago. Thanks. John

Good morning Chile and hello Carlos welcome to the channel. TH-cam can be quite amazing and reach viewers all over the world even as far away as chile... excellent. I am pleased that you enjoyed the episode. Beat wishes from Germany. 👍
Agree with most of your comments. Last year we rode some of the passes in the French and Spanish Pyrenees. I was riding solo but fully loaded and wanted to get a bit of a wriggle on. The bike was in Auto DSA and Dynamic Pro riding mode. The suspension coming out of slow hairpins was ideal but the throttle response was too severe with the bike leant over at slow speed. I suppose I could have fiddled about in the ‘Pro’ setting of Dynamic and altered the throttle input but it was easier on the move to change the riding mode to Road and set the suspension control to Dynamic. It gave me the ideal setup for exiting those slow hairpins. Very clever stuff. Also agree about those indicators and await with interest your solution. I’ve supplemented mine with Denali T3’s front and rear controlled with a Hex Ezecan and am now happy that my indicators and brake lights can be seen clearly. Of course it doesn’t solve the issue some have had with the front DRL’s being confused as indicators, but to date I haven’t had anyone pull out on me.
Hi String, thank you for sharing your experience with settings, like you I found on our Norway tour with all the slow speed corners up and down the Fjords, Ride Mode : Road, Damping : Dynamic and preload: Auto. Worked best. Its actually very nice to be able to mix the settings depending on the roads. Yes, more to follow with regards to the indicators. Carl
Thank you very much am not BMW rider i ride Honda CRF 1100 however i intend to join you riding BMW GSA 1250 this is why i am very interested in your content. thank you once again Carl .
That is an excellent explanation and video. Some of the comments do make me smile. Some didn't know what any of the settings do, or that by pressing this button it could make the bike do this etc etc, these are not cheap bikes, people buy them, yet have little or no understanding of what any of it can do!! The marketing people at BMW must be laughing their A**** off. Again excellent video.
Hi Frank welcome to the channel and thank you for your feedback. We are all different and some owners just get on and ride… never giving a thought to setup or adjustments, while others like to know exactly how everything works and then test all the options. I’m glad owners find the series informative and useful. I personally like to understand and try everything and make my own mind up as to which setting I like best. Have a great weekend Frank Carl
Why didn't I know your channel before? I think I'll get to know my 1200GS Rallye from 2018 better now ;) Great explanation about the misleading names BMW has chosen, for ride and damping modes
Hi Omar, thank you 🙏 and I’m pleased you are enjoying the GS explanations series. Feel free to share with your GS friends. The 2018 Rallye version in Blue is my favourite colour option 👍 Kind regards Carl
Looking forward to your DRL light replacement vid. I have the new multifunction and although no close shaves , I like you am not convinced BMW were thinking straight when they installed them as an option.
Great explanations, in both Part One and Part Two. On my non-Dynamic ESA, 2018 R1200RT, I leave the right hand Mode button in Dynamic . Depending on luggage and/or pillion I'll changing the preload . I switch between Normal and Hard on my dampening depending on cornering enthusiasm. I tried Soft (dampening) a couple time on rough roads. Waay too soft for my liking.
thanks mate ive learnt more about my GS in Two vids than i have in 18 months of owning it lol , i was wondering why i was going through two front tyres in 18800 KS on road, thanks awesome vids keep em coming,l all the best from OZ , ps, GOD SAVE THE KING
Hi Garth, good morning, yes King Charles.. that's going feel very strange for many years. Glad you found the two episodes helpful, and enjoy your summer... Best wishes Carl
Hi Carl, Thank you for your detailed explanation of the ESA system. I now feel confident making changes to the system when I'm out riding. I had a question. I ask this question here because a lot of peple on forums say that this issue is just part of the ESA making micro adjustments as I'm riding. I'm just not sure. The issue is the feeling of tapping in the footpegs. I don't feel it in the engine or frame, only when feet are on the footpegs. It happens on pavement with slight to moderate imperfections and on roads with tar snakes. On a new road with no imperfections, I hardly ever feel the tapping. Even though I see this complaint on forums from time to time, it still concerns me. I mentioned this to my dealer at my first service, They test rode the bike and said that they didn't notice anyhting, but I think the problem there is that all the rodes in that area are in very good shape with little or no imperfections. Have you heard of this and do you know what it imight be since many people think it's part of the ESA system? Thank, Kenneth
Hi Kenneth good morning Yes I know exactly what sound you mean, but I have not been able to find the source of it. Mine has got better (less tapping) as the mileage has increased and also since I changed the tyres, but it’s still there. It feels like front suspension to me possibly from the telelever area. I hope you enjoy the series and have fun on your new bike… best wishes Carl
Hello SSG and welcome to the channel. I do hope you enjoyed them and leaned something new. Please say thank you to your dealer from me when you next visit. Best wishes Carl
Hello, great video. Are you saying that the level of Road damping changes with the mode even though the suspension is set the same? In other words if I am in road mode and change the suspension to dynamic, that dynamic damping is different than if I am in Dynamic and have the suspension set to dynamic. In short, are there different levels of Dynamic damping depending on the mode?
Hi TDK. There are Three main suspension damping modes. Road, Dynamic, Enduro. These are further enhanced depending on the ride mode you choose. Is there are difference between Road + Dynamic and Dynamic + Dynamic... yes but it's small. Is there a difference between Dynamic + Dynamic and Dynamic Pro + Dynamic, again yes but it's all in the sensor system controls which take into account the way and speed you ride. I'll try to clarify this more in the next episode.
Hi Karl another amazing video. You have just made my day about sorting the indicators. How they ever got passed is beyond me. Can’t wait to see that video so I can get some. Hopefully that will be coming soon. Will there also be an installation video on them. Regards Andrew
Hi Andrew, good morning. Yes several episodes coming about the indicators, how they have been designed, how they work, the many many install options there are... and the different operating modes you can choose....more to come soon. Carl
Oh my, finally some news on changing those dreaded DRL units. I have wanted to change these since buying my GSA last September, now you have done the same it seams but are keeping us waiting for your next video, any chance you can let me know now where to sourced these please?
Thank you for Subscribing, I do appreciate it. 👍 I don’t really understand why viewers resist subscribing it’s free and has a really big impact on supporting the channel, and allowing it to grow on TH-cam. Anyway, happy Easter weekend when it arrives, Carl
I just picked up a 23' GS and trying to do some learning, I mean I'm still confused but it's not because of your video. That was well done, it's just me that's still confused.
Hi Michael, don’t worry it takes time to learn all the features and functions, and then more time to find what works best for you on your normal riding roads and your riding style. But, once that process is completed you have an extremely capable motorbike Best wishes Carl
This is a superb clear explanation of ESA, thank you. I have 2 questions I’d be grateful of your insight on please: 1. I am considering R1250R with or without electronic dynamic suspension control. If I get the one without suspension control then what damping is implemented and how will ride compare to a bike with suspension control? 2. The R1250R does not have front telelever but conventional forks. What difference does that make? I am more used to conventional fork front suspension and practice trail braking…does telelever at front allow trail breaking as breaking on entry to a curve presumably does little to shift weight to front to improve front traction with telelever?
Hi Dan, with regards to point 2: the R1250R handles much better and offers much more rider feedback than the bikes with telelever. I personally prefer this more traditional setup, because you can feel the connection between tyre and road, something that is missing from the telelever models. BMW know this are are always trying to improve it, I think the GS1300 might be getting closer but we have to wait and see. If I could have found a comfortable seat setup on the R, it would still be in my garage!!!. Point 1: I have only tested the base R without Dynamic ESA once for a very short 34km test. If I had to choose between the two versions, it would be the version with ESA as it works very very well. You could visit Rikky Tang on TH-cam, he's a good friend and might be able to offer more insight as he has been on the track a lot with his R1250R. If you send him a question... say hello from me 👍 Hope this helps Carl
@@justthewayitis Many thanks Carl for helpful comments and great content. I have followed your advice and sent a message to Rikky Tang with greetings from you! Any comment on the trail braking query with telelever…? With conventional forks trail breaking involves applying front brakes alongside throttle as necessary into turn to shift bike weight forward and compress forks which increases ground traction until curve exit is visible when brakes can be released and acceleration applied. If telelever prevents front fork compression during front braking then I’m not clear whether the same benefit is yielded of fork compression and increased downward force and traction…?
Hi Dan, you can trail brake the front on the Telelever bikes but it does not feel the same. It's not easy to load the front tyre like you can on a traditional bike. The feeling is completely different and it took me a couple of thousand km to adjust. But I think tyres play a big part too, I'm still on the Anakee Adventure tyres which are not great for sports riding. Once I'm on some nice rubber I hope the connection between rider / tyre / road will return. Carl
Hi Lionel, sadly my Multy had to go, I was and, I am still sad about letting her go, but maybe in the future i will have one back. I always liked the 2017 PP but could never find a good one for a good price. Carl
Thank you for this 2nd part of suspension explanations. Is there a complete listing of ALL the combinations possible, and the results that is providing plus examples of real situations a specific combination would be suggested for ?
Hello PSJ, there are 36 possible combinations. 3 preload x 2 damping x 5 ride modes = 30. Plus, 3 preload x 2 enduro modes = 6. That would be a big chart and hard to explain clearly, especially if you then want reall world scenarios for these 36 possible option. I did consider doing this but I couldn't find a simple way to explain and demonstrate this. So it sounds like YOU have found yourself a new task for the weekend.... smile.
Great 2 episodes explaining the suspension. Re: the indicators - are you saying that for USA models, the amber indicators were not approved by DOT so BMW had to fit the white LEDs? I have a ‘22 GSA USA model - it has amber front indicators?
Hi Hogdrive, the US has the same front options we have in EU and UK. It's the multifunction on the rear that the DOT did not approve. In the US the main rear lamp has both Side Light and Brake light functions. In the EU and UK we only have Brake light function in the main rear lamp. The Side light has been moved to the indicators which makes in terrible to see exactly what is happening. The indicators in the EU and UK have three functions to perform. Indicator flash Brake light Side light. Carl
@@justthewayitis Yes, The US does not allow the Multifunction indicators on the BMW, at least this is what my BMW dealer stated when I asked after watching your segment about the lighting packages. My '22 GS Rallye has the horizontal "V" light style amber indicators. For me, the video was a little unclear when you were talking of changing out the indicators from amber to white. It seemed like you were talking about the color of the indicators not the multifunction system. Maybe I missed something? Like the others have said in their posts, your videos are well done and very informative... Top notch!
Hello and welcome to the channel. Yes I also had the V style amber lights on the front. They are now replaced by a bright White running light (replacing the amber colour) which is a big improvement. They still flash amber when indicating and are Much brighter than the OEM indicators. I will explain the changes to the front and rear in an up coming episode which I hope, will make the improvements very clear to understand. For me at least.. its resolved all the issues and safety concerns I had. More information to come soon. Best wishes Carl
Looking forward to seeing your solution for the indicator issue as I'm in 100% agreement with you about the standard multifunction setup. I had my front ones switched off of DRL mode at the first service but haven't managed to do anything with the rears yet. Have looked at Denali and Weiser Technik setups both of which could solve the issue but are quite expensive. Interested to see if you've found a cheaper solution.
Hello TSport, that episode is few weeks away, but its getting closer. You might like to wait until that episode 😏, as I hope to give subscribers a discount code too.
Very good video!! I am also interested in the lights as I agree. Can’t understand how they think the rear lights are safe combined with the indicators. Especially since previous models had such good, bright LED indicators.
Great explanation. I have a 2016 R1200rs. When in DYNAMIC mode only, for and rider + pillion suspension mode and 2 up, while riding I get an error triangle come up and the suspension goes very hard. I heard it could be return spring closing the damping down. My question is the problem the ESA control unit module or or the actual shock? which one to replace?
Hello When the error triangle comes up and suspension goes firm that’s the bike going into safe mode or limp home mode on the suspension . The only way to be sure is to get the error code read by bmw or using an GS911 code reader. It is however a reported fault by other owners, but it could be the control unit or the shock it self. I’m presuming that when the error message comes up… if you stop the bike and turn it off and restart the message goes away? Best thing to do is get the error codes checked to see which system or part is failing . It could be a PWM output fail from the controller but only a specialist could confirm this. Hope this helps Carl
@@justthewayitis cool thanks for reply, yes have to stop, turn bike off and restart. But come back frequently in Dynamic mode so just use road for now. Until I get the codes out. Cheers
Hi Carl any chance you could at some time cover engine tick and tyre noise (ie michelin anakee tyres) i have the same model same year machine my personal experience is the bike seems noisy, great channel
Very interesting but I have a 2020 F850 GSA and want to know if you have done a tutorial on the suspension setting as it's a Pre 2021 machine and I don't have the latest settings.. Thanks.
Hi JC, welcome to the channel. I haven’t made a video on the F850 GSA, if BMW let me have one for a month I would. Perhaps you can find what your looking on your local BMW F forum ? Best wishes Carl
Great video! Very complete, very detailed. REQUEST: One thing I'd like to know more about is with the suspension settings in Dynamic/Auto, the difference between Dynamic and Dynamic Pro. Is there more performance with the Pro if all settings are left full on? I'm very curious! Thank you!
Hello Fall Bang Skid....great name. So I'm going to cover more about Dynamic and Dynamic Pro in the next episode... because part 2 was already 26 mins long. Best wishes Carl

do you think the older bikes were better as far as the display and esa?
also do you thing the base GS with a traditional shock is better as far as compression and rebound?
Hi, the new TFT display is brilliant and so is the dynamic ESA.
The pre 2018 bikes had a slightly better preload setting or spring rate.
I am watching now for hours and I really enjoy what I learn from you :-)
Thankyou, and welcome to the channel, glad to hear you are enjoying the episodes I make. best wishes Carl

Carl
Excellent set of videos. Thanks so much

You are very welcome 🙏 the AT is also a lovely motorbike 🏍️
Have a great weekend Frank

Hi Alex, thank you. Have a nice weekend
Why didn't I know your channel before? I think I'll get to know my 1200GS Rallye from 2018 better now ;)
Great explanation about the misleading names BMW has chosen, for ride and damping modes
Hi Omar, thank you 🙏 and I’m pleased you are enjoying the GS explanations series. Feel free to share with your GS friends.
The 2018 Rallye version in Blue is my favourite colour option 👍

Amazing tutorial. you almost get the feel that you are on a plane
Hello Les, thank you for the feedback, I am pleased that you have enjoyed the episode, best wishes Carl
Looking forward to your DRL light replacement vid. I have the new multifunction and although no close shaves , I like you am not convinced BMW were thinking straight when they installed them as an option.
Hi, yes many owners think the same. New indicator episode will come soon. Carl
Just hope its not the weiser solution. As good as that looks I dont think i can stretch to that sort of pricing.. look forward to next episode. 🙂
As just mentioned to another subscriber in the comments section, I hope to also be able to provide a discount code...more information to follow. Carl
Wow.......... VERY WELL described, thanks
You are very welcome, glad the video helped. Kind Regards Carl
Hi Gordon, thank you for sharing your thoughts and setting for the RT, I'm sure will help other RT users. Best wishes Carl

Lol.... thankyou 😏
Hi Carl,
Thank you for your detailed explanation of the ESA system.
Thank,
Kenneth
Hi Kenneth good morning
Yes I know exactly what sound you mean, but I have not been able to find the source of it.
Mine has got better (less tapping) as the mileage has increased and also since I changed the tyres, but it’s still there.
It feels like front suspension to me possibly from the telelever area.
I hope you enjoy the series and have fun on your new bike… best wishes Carl
@@justthewayitis Thank you , Carl! And again, thanks for all your hard work in making these videos.

ESA is amazing, ESA is not only a suspension geometry tamer, ESA is robust and works for decades with little maintenance
👍, seasons greetings, Carl 🙋🏻♂️
Thank you for the explanation.
Outstanding review. Thank you
Hi Axis and welcome to the channel Thank-you for your kind words. Best wishes Carl

Next video is up this afternoon
I just picked up a 23' GS and trying to do some learning, I mean I'm still confused but it's not because of your video. That was well done, it's just me that's still confused.
Hi Michael, don’t worry it takes time to learn all the features and functions, and then more time to find what works best for you on your normal riding roads and your riding style.
But, once that process is completed you have an extremely capable motorbike
Best wishes Carl
Thank you, great video - great explanations!!!
Hi Eric, thank you ,riding modes episode to follow.
This is a superb clear explanation of ESA, thank you.
I have 2 questions I’d be grateful of your insight on please:
If you send him a question... say hello from me 👍
Hope this helps
Carl
Carl
@@justthewayitis Many thanks Carl for the very helpful and appreciated insights.
Your welcome 👍
Gréât stuff as always… what about the MTS??? Do you still have it ?
So it sounds like YOU have found yourself a new task for the weekend.... smile.
Did you make a chart @psj3940? ;)
Great job ! Even a Texan can understand!
Hi Rusty, lol... thankyou.
Indicator flash
Brake light
Side light.
Thank you…Maestro!!!

Hello Manne and welcome to the channel Thankyou for your feedback I am happy you are enjoying the GS series

No one understands why BMW did this.
Excellent thanks 👍
Hi Peter, thank you 👍
Well explained, thanks!
Good morning California, thankyou.
Hello
When the error triangle comes up and suspension goes firm that’s the bike going into safe mode or limp home mode on the suspension .
Hope this helps
Carl
@@justthewayitis cool thanks for reply, yes have to stop, turn bike off and restart. But come back frequently in Dynamic mode so just use road for now. Until I get the codes out. Cheers
