Honestly putting both bikes on the same dyno on the same day and comparing the powerbands and power/weight ratios is likely a better tool for direct comparison than quoting track times without context.
@@stevem4783 Dyno numbers are well and fine until you start factoring in weight and gearing. Which is why the 1/4 mile tells a better tale about what it can do than a dyno sheet. Especially when you know the DA and such when the run took place. Because then you can calculate it to sea level if you're into that kind of thing. As I said, both riders being equal, the MT-09 is the faster of the two. It doesn't hurt my pride to say that in the least because it's legit fact.
I was just curious how H-D's new liquid cooled would stack up against a manufacturers liquid cooled bike that I know is fast. Honestly didn't expect the results that we got.
No... No having haters doesn't mean that at all. Haters gonna hate no matter what, and real stupidity garnering real criticism will also alway be shrugged off as "haters hating". It is what it is. Don't be an idiot in life and be honest with everyone including yourself.
Hey Blockhead crew. Screw the haters that got all butt hurt because a Harley beat their Hypernaked. I love my 2021 MT-09SP too but it’s not the fastest bike on the planet. It’s exactly what it’s meant to be, a torque monster and great all around bike. Great content as always.
I am glad to see Harley's new engines are doing well. I have always found the torque vs hp obsession strange. As was said in the video, you are riding the horsepower. The smaller Yamaha engine just has to turn more revs to get close to the larger Harley's power output That is why God invented the gearbox. The fact that one reaches max power at a lower engine speed is not really a big deal unless you prefer the engine sound of a slower engine. Gearing is what allows the power to reach the road
Acceleration depends not just on engine power, but also on how much of that power you can actually put on the ground while keeping the front wheel on the ground. The MT09 is a wheelie happy machine, which makes it a ton of fun, but it also hurts its 0-60 acceleration. If you added more power while keeping everything else the same, it'd make little difference for the 0-60 acceleration. A bike with the same power/weight ratio, but one that is less eager to wheelie, will accelerate faster from a stop because you can use more throttle.
People are stupid bro. I had a v rod muscle a couple years back. Currently have an m109 and a hayabusa. I was on an m109 forum and they were Harley bashing. I told them the v rod is a quick bike. I told them my v rod with the same mods as my current m109 was a quicker bike. One dude blew me up saying I didn’t know how to ride the 109 and shift properly because there’s no way the v rod was quicker. Fan boys just can’t accept facts man. Is what it is.
the only thing the chart from the dyno doesn't show (or i missed) is how fast the bikes reach their max rpm. if both bikes take the same amount of time to reach max rpm the charts would be very similar. The Harley is 85 lbs heavier but has 24 more torque than the mt09 too, so how much would that affect acceleration?
Contrary to what the Yammie cult believes, it won't be that impressive. Several videos out of stock MT 10s laying down the lower end of 120 rwhp stock. Moore Mafia has one.
At 10:20 for example you should also compare dyno speed with the most similar gear so that the peak power would end at approximately the same time. Because like that if you compare different gears of the same bike you can get graph results a bit like that. Of course the HD is the torque king here, and if bikes weighted the same thr HD would always be much stronger pulling. In reality comparing the speed the 2nd gear of the HD reaches you must use 1st gear on the 09 to be closer. I do believe that way the "race" should be neck to neck.
Still surprised the Harley pulled away like it did considering I have a "built up" dyna street bob with a 110 (106hp/122tq) and a 2020 z900 with just a slip on. On paper power wise it's close hp but there is no way in hell my dyna is beating the Z even if it has almost double the tq it's also 200lbs heavier.
I'd expect your Dyna to do well against the Kawi from a dig and down low. Makes its power a lot lower and has a lot more grunt. From a roll or once you're at speed (which won't take long) the Z900 should pull away, that's where the revs and the power/weight ratio shine.
@@stevem4783 I'm not even sure it would from a dig. The Z is a low torque motor in inline 4 terms. Peak torque is at 7000ish (which it obviously revs to rather quickly). Considering his Harley is probably hitting peak at 3000-4000 out of an available 6000ish rpm, other than the first 60 feet or so, the Z should be able to rev up fast enough to hit peak torque at or before the Harley does. The real limiting factor on the dig will be that the Z will be harder to launch well without looping. Check out full gas (a drag racing channel on YT). They have several Z900s on there run 10.05ish in the quarter and pulling some upsets (poor MT 10).
@@TheAsheybabe89 That first 60 feet or so is pretty much what I was getting at, especially factoring in the ease of launching the Harley vs the difficulty of the 900.
I love the MT-09 and the CP3 engine. Not a Harley guy per se, but the Sportster S is pretty sweet and I was definitely impressed with it out pulling the MT in your last video. I'm happy for Harley as to me, it seems like they're heading in the right direction. At the end of the day, they're both cool bikes. No reason to let it twist your underpants. :)
I like both of them, was just curious to see how H-D's new liquid cooled engine would stack up against a manufacturer that's well established in the liquid cooled market. Didn't expect the results we got tbh!
I agree HD should make the transition to modernize their bikes. I am sure they can create awesome modern sport bikes, once they but the money and research into it.
its more than 300cc bigger, and has only 2 cilinders compared to the MT09 3 cilinder engine... every single pull they did was from really low rev, where the cp3 engine is barely making any power... i wish they would bring a proper comparison.
I was not impressed, it was as expected. The S has a great torque to weight ratio when compared to the MT-09. Its engine has to move like 1/2lbs less for each N of torque. Then, there's the lower rpm range the power is delivered. So, no surprises there. 👍
Id love to hear how your Hammer 1275 Sportster compares to these two bikes in overall performance and general riding experience. I came from an FZ09 to a 1200 Iron and was actually just about to go the Hammer route when you did yours but ended up pausing that for the time being.
Can you do a Rain/Road/Sport pull comparison on the S? I'd like to see how much the power is dialed in in each mode, not just for the peak, but the powerband.
Sill, it doesn't make much sense to compare these bikes. 15K5 vs 9K5 price ranges (11K for the SP that does not change power). You should compare the S against a MT-10, CB1000R or even a Z H2. That would make much more sense because of the price range.
But it makes less sense because of what they are. You can get the price ranges closer but then you're moving more into hyper nakeds and supersports which you're putting up against a...power cruiser hybrid of sorts? I mean a Harley Softail Standard costs ballpark about the same as an MT-10, does that mean it makes sense to compare them? Basically the point is that we're all just having fun here, so there's no need to be overly critical of the comparison and just take the info for what it is.
Comparing a new liquid cooled engine against a liquid cooled engine manufacturer that’s been doing it for decades is what I was interested in. Or two cylinder vs 3 cylinder performance comparison makes sense to me. But what makes sense to one person, might not makes sense to another. So be it 🤷🏻♂️
@@stevem4783 still does not make sense. Hyper or not, it is a naked x hybrid cruiser and it's bang for the buck. If you are going to spend 16k and compare straight line performance and dyno numbers, than its better be worth every dollar you put on it. Then, it kind of makes sense comparing to the MT-10, which is still 3k cheaper. Bottom line is we are just having fun with a bit of reasoning. But, if brain is optional, then you are absolutely correct. lol
@@BlockheadMoto HD made liquid cooled before and it's not like rocket science. Volumetric displacement is more important than number of cylinders. So two large cylinders can yield more power. I consider both bikes recently. But, I understood they were not for the same purpose. I would buy the S for the overall style and cruiser ride, but not for the reasons I buy a MT-09. Which is for city driving, canyon carving, flexibility in an all around best ever cost vs benefits package. 🤷
@@BlockheadMoto let me give you an comparison example that ticks your criteria but, would also not make sense. A new zx14r msrp is pretty much the same as the S. It is water cooled, manufacturer with lots of experience on such "technology". However, it puts down almost 200hp to the wheels, and smokes the S in any performance comparison... Displacement is even closer a, a 1400cc vs a 1200cc. But, would that comparison interest you and your public? Cheers!
I just noticed the nightster you guys tuned put down just 7hp less than that mto9 but 10ft lbs more than that mto9. Wow. Im curious how much weight was lost with that TBR pipe.
I don't question your integrity. I see other bike testers who have the two competing bikes in the SAME gear when they roll on. How it should be is that each bike should be in their own OPTIMAL GEAR AND AT THEIR OWN OPTIMAL RPM awaiting the signal to go! I assume this is how you conducted your rolling runs.
This may be a dumb question, but considering the MT-09 revs much higher, wouldn't shorter gearing on the MT-09 put the wheel torque of both bikes closer together?
In 1979 I had Yamaha XS 1100 Special with the most amazing color from the factory. Well 2nd gear broke again so I picked up a 1000 XLCH Harley Sportster. I was beating all my friends with 750 Yamahas and many others. It wouldn't beat any four cylinder 900 or 1000.
Nice demonstrations. Harley’s larger motor brings horsepower and torque sooner in the rev range vs MT09. I like the look of the Sportster S even the stock exhaust. Typically I like underbelly exhaust
I like the power that the Harley makes, but I just don't care for the bike. I really wish they would have come out with the Bronx. Between these two I would choose the MT-09 even though the power is less. Biggest problem now is my local Harley dealers are adding 1,000-2,000 to the price of bikes now. They might rip off somebody, but it isn't going to be me.
No. I've had a hammer kitted Sportster. It would take some serious work to put down the numbers a sportster s is. And it's 70lbs lighter. Really the nightster 975 is putting out what a basic hammer kitted Evo would put out. And that's nearly 100lbs lighter than an Evo sporty.
Liquid cooled motors you can have tighter clearances, higher compression, and more horsepower without overheating the engine as temperature controlled. Heat is friction which causes west and horsepower loss/reliability
I’ve been riding a Triumph speed triple for the last 10 years , never thought I’d ever buy something else , except another Speed Triple I rode a Sportster S And bought it It’s every bit as fast as my S3 It pulls so freakin hard !! Never thought I’d buy a Harley It’s a Great Bike !!!!
It would be great to see this video with the new nightster vs the MT09 as I think they would be a little more closer comparison both with the engine and the ergos. Great video
I traded my softail deuce for the sporter s and I gotta tell you going from a 96ci to that 1250 s there is definitely a lot more noticeable power ! I love my sporter s
I love data. We all have our own views and opinions, but it’s cool to see comparison data. As always, I’m glad you’re transparent with the info, because I know how much you love that MT-09. 🔥🤘🏼
It's more about the RPM limit that the displacement than air cooled or water cooled, but you get into high RPM you need the water cooled.but really there all air cooled the air is what cools the water.
On the sportster s can you dyno in a different gear so you dont hit speed limiter? Looks like you able to take it to 7.4k rpm but im wondering if there's actually more in it at redline.
Really enjoy this video. Could u do FTR vs sporster or even the chief dark horse. I was think going idian for my next bike but that sporster vs mt09 video made pause and take second look at Harley. Thank again

Yup, we'll be tuning up the Sportster S in a future episode. Before that though, we'd like to see how it stacks up against a few other bikes in stock form, but we'll be doing a full build on it!
My feelings aren’t hurt they are ELATED that the Sportster S came out in top! I have to say my 3 favorite naked bikes are the Ducati XDiavel, the MV Augusta Brutale, and KTM 1290 Super Duke. If you can tune the sportster S to compete with those bikes you can show us what Harley can achieve :))))
All its going to take is a tune and bolt ons to keep up with the diavel from a stop. I ran 10.93@119mph on my stock sportster s and it looks like the diavel is a mid 10 second bike. Granted that 90 degree L twin is going to always have more top end but it won't take much on the sportster to break even with a diavel in acceleration. I love all bikes so don't think I'm a Harley hard-core fan. I love any power cruiser including the Vmax, Diavel and Rocket III.
If you do get your hands on the MT-07 I’d love to see a comparison between the 07 and 09 in mode 4. Also with mode 4 if you think the 09 would be manageable for a responsible beginner.
You also have to remember the world super bike championships had 1000cc Twins (RC51/RSV/996) competing against 750cc in-line bikes because of the advantages they had. I don’t think it’s a terribly far off comparison on just the engines but the Harley is a way bigger bike and not nearly as agile as the MT. Just completely different classes of bikes. I’d like to see the SportyS against the FTR or Scout.
Got them both. Not sure how you got there. None of that means anything as I really believe it comes down to the riders on the pavement in the end. MT09 did crazy SmackDown my Sportster S in short order. Harley had nothing for it on the takeoff line. Had to tell everyone about how it caught up while they laughed. Chalked it up to too heavy. As a matter of fact the MT09 even gives my Gen1 VMAX a strong run for its money-though the Pitbull Max prevailed. Anyway, great content. Keep it coming.
I'll be curious to see how your sportster s holds up to what you guys want to do with it. Mine has 3k miles on it and is unfortunately in the shop with a major engine failure.
I qa surprised by the original video of you vs. Iron J moto and I was impressed, but believed you because who you've proven to be over the last 8 years of your channel. At the end of the day, Harley has built a fast bike! Good on them. Hope it reliable.
I have a Kawi and I love Japanese bike but altho horsepower gives the max performance, it doesn't tell how and how fast it got there. The Sportser S has only a slight horsepower advantage but that also comes with a weight disadvantage... There's only one explaining left as to why the bike is faster. It does that whole 121 HP much quicker then the MT09.

Those are two very pretty hp/torks curves - smooth on HP and early and flat on torks. We need to band together and change how we talk about torque - "peak torque at 7,200 RPMs" tells us nothing about the body of the torque, only its peak. I want to know what's happening from 3,000 to 6,000 RPMs. The "area under the curve" is where it's at.
A lot of the internals are actually very different, the only things the revmax shares with the V-rod is that they’re both over square piston designs, and the degree of the V angle. Which honestly doesn’t matter, they are both 60° v-twins, but the Revmax has a 30° offset crank. Which makes it fire like a 90° V-twin. So they don’t even share a firing order

The only way to really see when the difference is that close is to put two riders on two stock bikes on the same day and have at it a few times with each rider on both.
I've seen "official" 1/4 times vary by up to a full second depending on a whole slew of variables nobody can account for. Elevation, temp, humidity, track conditions, rider skill, among others...
Honestly putting both bikes on the same dyno on the same day and comparing the powerbands and power/weight ratios is likely a better tool for direct comparison than quoting track times without context.
@@stevem4783
Dyno numbers are well and fine until you start factoring in weight and gearing.
Having haters means you’re doing something right. Screw them. It’s all about what makes you happy.
Great video, any news please on the Sportster S streetfighter build coming soon?
Hey Blockhead crew. Screw the haters that got all butt hurt because a Harley beat their Hypernaked. I love my 2021 MT-09SP too but it’s not the fastest bike on the planet. It’s exactly what it’s meant to be, a torque monster and great all around bike. Great content as always.
MT 10 is what the 1200 Harley should have been compared to... and the Harley would have been stomped.
Yep and strapped to the dyno won't show that nature of the MT09.
Great video, I always enjoy dyno content, it’s a truth maker
I love it! That last video was surprising. Now let's compare it to the MT10
Haha I made that comment before you mentioned the MT10, nice!
@@SportyRider Sporty S vs MT10 incoming!
“Type silly stuff”
Nailed it!
Great video , Have you guys done any updates on the Sportster S ?
Great watch guys thank you
Still surprised the Harley pulled away like it did considering I have a "built up" dyna street bob with a 110 (106hp/122tq) and a 2020 z900 with just a slip on.
The S is barely 80 lbs heavier than the MT-09, so it is a much better power to weight ratio (comparing the S to other air colled HDs).
@@ErickNagy I am sure lighter wheel and tyres would drive the S crazy ;)
Get the Sportster S, will out perform a hammer in every aspect
Can you do a Rain/Road/Sport pull comparison on the S?
I'd like to see how much the power is dialed in in each mode, not just for the peak, but the powerband.
For sure!
@@BlockheadMoto Curious to see a Mode 4 pull on the MT09 as well. Supposedly that's the only mode that reduces the power.
@@BlockheadMoto my man
As a Harley owner I was shocked by the power it made stock.
The bike you guys are looking for is the SuperDuke 1290r.. Best of both worlds...
The bike is absolutely nuts... 🤘🤘
I was surprised in the VS video when the Sportster S had the MT09’s #
So were we! Honestly did not expect that out of the Sportster S!
The Sportster S has me wanting to add more power to my Street Bob lol
Love the editing! So funny. Good work Justin!!
I bought a sportster s and now having trouble finding different exhaust
my curiosity comes up to the FTR and the Sporty.
P.S. thanks for the thumbs-up reminder😂
Ended up trading my 2023 MT-09 SP for a 2024 Sportster S after test riding. Never been a "Harley guy"
I'll take the MTO9 all day!!
Great bike!
You should do the MT10 as well to see how it compares.
I am very ignorant here, but are dyno tests usually done in the highest gear? Thanks for doing this and posting these numbers!
Update on Sportster S build?
Nice demonstrations. Harley’s larger motor brings horsepower and torque sooner in the rev range vs MT09. I like the look of the Sportster S even the stock exhaust. Typically I like underbelly exhaust
Where would the super duke fit between these bikes?
We need to see the sportster with intake, exhaust and flashed ecu. Imagine how fun that would be on such a short bike.
Oooo don’t forget about the street fighter conversion!!! Gonna be a sick project and content generator!
Love these dyno videos as well! Would love to see the new nightster on the dyno
Where's does your og hammer kitted sportster fit in? Is it faster than both of these?
Bro you can’t make everyone happy lol some people just wake up every day and look forward to being a jerk. Sucks to be them!
Do it on a tuned unlocked fz09/mt09
See which one tops out higher!
Liquid cooled motors you can have tighter clearances, higher compression, and more horsepower without overheating the engine as temperature controlled. Heat is friction which causes west and horsepower loss/reliability
The Harley Sportster S I'd the first Harley I seriously think about buying. I will test ride it in the next couple of weeks
I love the new Sportster S, wish this was arrpund 20 years ago! It looks like a freaking STREET FIGHTER!
I would like to see a comparison with the V-Rod 1250 and the new Sportster s , both Dyno and on street drag race.
i wish you wuold have also dyno the mt09 in mode 4 because yamaha say that mode 4 do cut power buut not by how much
BLOCKHEAD are you guys going to modify a sportster s to be more like the mt in how it sits?
I’ve been riding a Triumph speed triple for the last 10 years , never thought I’d ever buy something else , except another Speed Triple
I rode a Sportster S
And bought it
It’s every bit as fast as my S3
It pulls so freakin hard !!
Never thought I’d buy a Harley
It’s a Great Bike !!!!
Sportster S wins again!

@@BlockheadMoto day-DAH! 😜
Just block out the haters bro. Love the videos!
Nice job and insightful, own neither bike.
How would the new Nightster compare?
Really enjoy this video. Could u do FTR vs sporster or even the chief dark horse. I was think going idian for my next bike but that sporster vs mt09 video made pause and take second look at Harley. Thank again
Wouldn't a Ducati naked bike be a better comparison? Like a 1200ish street fighter? That's a comparo I'd love to see.
No need to defend yourself, you make great content. There's always gonna be haters no matter what. Most times I make a comment I get a hater comment on my comment. Have a great day, you guys are awesome!
No FTR on the dyno?!
I really like these. Please do one for the Triumph Speed Twin 1200
All things being equal, there ain’t no substitute for cubic inches! The new Harley is an awesome bike.
Are you able to tune the sportster s? Would love to see that together with the 2 brothers exhaust and see what you can get out of it
Yup, we'll be tuning up the Sportster S in a future episode.
Looking forward to seeing what you come up with. Weight will be interesting. I hope you have a good result!
If you do get your hands on the MT-07 I’d love to see a comparison between the 07 and 09 in mode 4. Also with mode 4 if you think the 09 would be manageable for a responsible beginner.
LOL!!! I question your integrity sir!! Tegrity!!!!People are crazy. You guy are doing great. Look at the comment alittle less as you get more popular.
Would be pretty cool to see u guys do a stage 4 on the Sportster S, since it hasn’t been done on TH-cam as of yet…
I'm not a harley guy but when I saw that sportster s I wanted it but sadly it was out of my price range so I got an MT09 and I love it dont regret it!
I'll be curious to see how your sportster s holds up to what you guys want to do with it. Mine has 3k miles on it and is unfortunately in the shop with a major engine failure.
That's a bummer! Hopefully you get it fixed and never have problems with it again.
Did they say what happened?
@@BlockheadMoto Not yet, they just picked it up yesterday afternoon. Hopefully I’ll hear something soon.

Great job, you guys... I love Sportster S from Day 1...
The side profile of the sportster s screams scrambler to me.
I'd love to see a comparison of the MT-09 and the FTR1200
Maybe put it up against an mt10 which still has a lower displacement and see how that goes, 🤔
Would love a MV Agusta Brutale 800 RC or RR on your dyno .... maybe a leader board to show all the results like they had on top gear back in the day
I have a Kawi and I love Japanese bike but altho horsepower gives the max performance, it doesn't tell how and how fast it got there. The Sportser S has only a slight horsepower advantage but that also comes with a weight disadvantage... There's only one explaining left as to why the bike is faster. It does that whole 121 HP much quicker then the MT09.
Blockhead great job you're a leader two wheels one motor great comparison big ups 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
You need an I Want To Believe poster in the background

I would like to see what the RC51 has for numbers to show you what a vtwin liter bike was putting down back in the day LOL.. this is a great comparison and there will always be people who will second or 4th guess ya on stuff. glad you like both bikes, glad you got both bikes, and can't wait to see what the crew comes up with to do next. cheers. side not still would like you to put on the vrod to see its stock numbers (if no one has done a stage 1 yet) or even compare it to a stage 1.. obviously it will kill it due to the weight difference but still would be fun to see. I own a 2016 night rod and prior to that had a ktm 790 duke ( which is friggen amazing) but previously had a ride on BMW s1000r ,low rider 117 with exhaust and tune then rode the sportster s..........the sportster s is AMAZING!! Was the most fast and aggressive lill bike off the mark.
RIDE ALL BIKES EVERY BIKE IS FUN IN ITS OWN WAY.
I believe the Sportster S is the Vrod motor essentially
A lot of the internals are actually very different, the only things the revmax shares with the V-rod is that they’re both over square piston designs, and the degree of the V angle. Which honestly doesn’t matter, they are both 60° v-twins, but the Revmax has a 30° offset crank. Which makes it fire like a 90° V-twin. So they don’t even share a firing order
