I just bought my first Harley Davidson a month ago. I started riding at the end of 2019 on a 2017 Yamaha R3 that I got with 1,000 miles on it. It was a great bike to learn on. I had a blast every time I rode, put about 5500 miles on it, and did a few motorcycle courses using it. I ended up selling it last month to upgrade and sold it for almost what I bought it for. In 2020, Harley released the updated Low Rider S and I knew i'd have one at some point. They touted it as a more sport oriented cruiser. With inverted forks, dual disc brakes upfront, and a relatively low weight compared to bigger cruisers, the HD LRS has blown me away. I'd be very interested to see what Chase and the team has to say about the Low Rider S. Coming off the R3, i'm surprised how good the LRS handles. @@alexduey7868 I agree. I ended up selling it for almost what I paid for it. Since the market is so wild right now, I couldn't keep it. Selling that was like 25% down on my 2021 HD. One day I will definitely own another R3 for weekend fun. It was such a nice motorcycle.
Rode this thing in sturgis this past Saturday and can back up the power of this thing, 120 mph in 4th gear with out trying hard, stop sign burn outs where easy with all the torque, the mode changes made a huge difference in throttle response, want this bike for sure
OC: 1. Another plus on getting this over the Ducati Diavel is that you would be buying American. I’ve always wanted to say that …we are a two car family and both of them are Honda’s (it’s hard to beat Japanese reliability) Anyways, this is a bike that I genuinely like the design but also seems to better than most of the competition in this category. 2. I would also add the Yamaha Vmax into this sport/cruiser/bruiser category. I’ve ridden both the Vmax and the Diavel (the Diavel was way more enjoyable than the Vmax - and cooler looking). I haven’t tried out the Sportster yet. Might have a chance this weekend - I can’t wait!
OC: I’ve loved Harley’s since I was young. I even bought a 2016 Sportster 48 new from the dealership and loved it. But I have long since thought that they needed to make something like this. Awesome bike.
OC: I think the Sportster S sounds great from the reviews and definitely has it's place in getting more people to the Harley brand. I don't think it would be a direct competitor for the Diavel. Maybe the FTR 1200.
The one brake rotor was done to ease the steering of the bike by reducing the rotating mass. Some adventure/enduro rider swap to a single disc front for a lighter steering, also reduce unsprung mass for more traction. And of course... OC BABY!
yeah , it's almost as if BUELL nailed it 20 years ago and developed an innovative system based on this concept before fucktards at Harley cut funding, huh?
I know at around 20:40 you said the mid controls might be better, but I'm actually exited to try my first forward control bike. Longer distance rides being comfortable was a big selling point for me
OC- As an HD owner with a dirt background, I love this thing. One day I would love to have this as a second bike. Longer travel shock & forks, mid controls, comfy seat, passenger seat, and a set of slip ons would make this thing perfect.
Great video, but I bought the 2022 Nightster-not the same old Harley styling. I tuned the suspension to my weight and I took it to the Tail of the Dragon. It performed similar to the previous Ducati Monster 696 with its light weight and easy to maneuver in tight turns. I prefer the Road mode as it is very smooth. It went from 60 to100 in a matter of seconds at 4,600 RPM.
I haven’t rode it yet. If I was to get a Sportster S. I would have the mid-control foot pegs installed because this will enable me to lift myself up if I see a bump coming up easily. I do that all the time on my Street Triple 765RS. We have lots of bad bumps all over the San Francisco Bay Area.
OC- I hope more people give Harley a chance with this new engine they got going on. Even if you don't like them, at least give them a chance before talking bad about them. Their dealerships are one thing, but then again I've never went to a dealership to buy a bike just because I like the fake smile people give me. I go just to buy the bike.
OC. Top notch production value as always Chase. You guys are truly the benchmark for that on YT. I think the new Sporster S is very interesting and it is genuinely GREAT that HD is trying to evolve. I wish them godspeed and good luck on their journey but I won't be going with them. I've owned 7 Harleys (4 Sportys, 2 Dynas and one Road King) over the last 2 decades. I've put up with inflated prices for bikes and bad service at snobby dealerships all along the way. Unless and until that aspect of the Motor Company changes, I will cheer on their efforts from the saddles of my non-HD motorcycles. ✌Ride Positive y'all!
I rode one this past weekend i loved it it did 137 with ease an wheelies in sport mode in first gear without trying just rolling full throttle from a slow roll
I think you are spot on, on your review. Maybe H-D used FWD controls so guys like you buy a bike like this and get used to FWD controls and later when you decide to switch over to another model like the touring you are already used to it. Just a wild guess.
OC. I’m a Harley guy but I was really interested to see what you would think of the bike. Good solid review. I thinks it’s target competition is Indian but definitely shooting for others as well. As far as dealers go I do ride ATVs and snowmobiles so I have experience with all brands of dealers. There are good ones and bad ones amongst all brands. I would honestly go as far to say my experience in Harley dealers for the most part is better than that of other brands. It’s like any other work environment if management is good the dealers is good if management is hard to work for it trickles down to the customer experience.
@@jeepstertj556 seems so to me as well, thanks for keeping me updated with the news !!! I seriously love this engine from harley ! Also dig the looks of the sportster s .
OC: I ride a VRod Muscle, I like the new direction HD is leaning toward, however I think the mid/forward controls should be a no cost option. Forward for Cruiser riders, Mid for those coming from sport bikes
As a primarily a sort bike minded guy. I found myself getting a cruiser/ touring bike from them when they didn't have the one I went there for (used SV650). It was already sold. I love my cruiser now. Since then I began to look at them more and found me anticipating the release of the Bronx that was discontinued. Now that after hearing so much from several different people I'm trying to find a local dealer that has one in stock to test ride or at least sit on. As I know this has been a while give them a shot as times are changing and so is the general mentality as people get older and new and younger take over ideas change.
OC. I love your real riding, comprehensive review. Thanks a lot. Looking forward to riding one of these. I'm a Harley guy all the way. This bike excites me.
OC: maybe in the line of a BMW R Nine T.. similar price point and I think they are wanting to take BMW on, they want it to be a hit in Europe so they can meet Euro 5 compliance and show they can hang with the big boys, across the pond.
OC: great video! I think you are right on with the suspension. I switched out my stock shocks on my sporty with 13" Legend piggyback shocks, and it now rides smoother than my Ultra Limited. I almost feel its a waste of a shock to only have 2" travel. I would have gone 3-3.5" travel and perhaps make a seat with 2 positions for shorter inseam riders. I would have also gone with 2 rotors, because I do think people will ride this bike like they stole it especailly with that engine! Other than that I think this bike beats every bike in its class with performance and aesthetics. The Diavel and 1290 Super Duke are in a higher performance class. However, when that Rev Max Bronx comes out it may be time for people to replace their Biscotti Espressos and Weinerschnitzels for a Cafe Americano. I would be interested in comparing the dyno charts for the Biscotti, Weinerschnitzel, and Americano to see if the Americano hits its power band quicker.
This Sportster S with a tune and an exhaust is a monster of a cruiser. There's a Thai bike shop that has one dynoing at ~122 hp and 121 ft/lbs torque with just those two things. Pretty crazy for the weight, since it's under 500 lbs (custom exhaust is lighter than the stock, 502 lbs stock).
I think they were right to put forward controls. A lot of customers actually put forwards on stock Harleys with mids, most of the time it is the very first mod they do.
I would love to see/hear a comparison video between the Triumph Rocket III, Sportster S and Diavel 1260. Which would be a clear winner? Let's go! Make it happen Chase.
It's a beautiful and amazing bike but it comes with a few headaches. During winter it was a NIGHTMARE getting it started. A few problems with the ECM and a couple weeks on the shop dealing with software issues. Now bike is running smoothly and let me tell ya... it's FAST !
OC: love the direction HD is going but my dad and uncles are stuck on the old HD heritage. Saying these new bikes from HD are “heartless”. This is what they have to do in order to keep their company alive though.
@@6amamoeba677 Far from the truth. Second hand market is flooded with more than acceptable condition H-D bikes at good prices, which is what hinders new sales in one way or another. People still prefer the air cooled engines that H-D has made over the years, it's just that either they can't afford to own a new one or that they are not willing to pay the high price tag. It's not a problem concerning state-of-the-art technology. In other countries, little displacement bikes with basic technology are a huge success.
the harley bronx would be the equivalent to the monster and ftr. sporsters s is equivalent to the indian bobber and other power cruisers like the diavel
@@Matt-qh5sm the bronx is aimed at the monster but it lost before it hit the street. The new monster is 40lbs lighter than the previous model so harley shelved the bronx to focus on the sportster line. Which 5 different models are in the works right now, including a tracker model to compete with the ftr
Harley turn signals. Push right button for right blinker; left for left blinker. They self-cancel, or you can cancel by pressing them again. Press both at once for emergency flasher.
OC: I think it has been said in one of the livestreams: A Harley, is a Harley. You can't compare these bikes to another brand. :) Love the looks and the technology on this bike!! :o You actually made me interested in this Sportster.
You can compare them to their direct competition. Indian. The entire reason they have a digital dash, and water cooling. The Scout and FTR are selling at a crazy rate so it's only natural to compete. We all win.
OC: Maybe not directly in competition with the Ducati, but close. I'm from the age of the power cruiser, V-Max, V65 Magna. Where you prayed the front-end didn't' lift so high you went on over, raw brute force. The Sportster (to me) is a cruiser with a big bucket load of power that can get out and run, but more refined than brutal. I'm not a huge Sportster fan myself, but I do want to see what HD does with the new engine package, and yeah, if I find a demo days nearby, I'd take it out for a ride.
That’s what I was worried about the sportster s is for corning. I want a liter but I’m tired of bending over tbh, but it’s also nice you can get mid controls instead of forward controls. Great video I’m probably gonna pick one up!
Man I love my Evo Sporty, but this thing makes me so pumped! Once the aftermarket gets ahold of this new bike and all the crazy custom parts the Harley community makes starts coming around, this thing is going to be such a monster bike to rip. Edit: Also! Most people I've seen don't buy Harley branded parts due to the upcharge, aftermarket companies will make mid control kits for WAY cheaper.
@@ZipKickGo Dude right! I'm honestly super excited to see what kinda crazy builds come out of this bike once the aftermarket for it has been well established
@@OkDude7861 Honestly for me, a set of pipes will be enough. That bike's more than fast enough for anything I'd ever want it to do. If anything, maybe a rear shock upgrade and call it a day.
I have an Evo as well. The only thing I’m concerned about is the Sportster S sound. I freaking love how the Evo sounds with V&H short shots. I don’t think this new engine is going to give me the same feeling.
@@cmfall1986 I agree with you on that, my Evo has drag pipes and it is knarly. But with the redesign of the engine from sohc to dohc, that gives it a lot more higher rpm capability meaning it will still sound loud as hell with aftermarket pipes but won't have that slower firing order sound we're used to. My best comparison so far is my buddies MT-07 inline twin. He has it straight piped and it's a touch quieter than my evo by about 500cc's. I think we'll enjoy the engines sound.
Chase your reviews are always candid, quite fair & thorough. Appreciated. Finally, Harley has allowed itself to adopt a great new truly non-Harleyisc engine, similar to the Porsche designed engine that was on the V-Rod, wrongly dispensed with, by Harley. Yes, mid controls are the way to go, as they give much better control & comfort than forwards.
I never thought there'd be a day that I want an HD bike to the same degree I want other bikes I really desire like the R7, RS660, Daytona 675R, Bonnie Bobber, Spitfire Bobber and Six, but hot damn I'd love to have one of these once I reach the intermediate level of experience.
This bike needs work. Rear wheel suspension travel is 2 inches, add forward controls and a jockey seat equals uncomfortable ride.. heavy wheels and single disc brake up front is not sport and a horribly big exhaust. Again look at the seat
@@johnengland8619 You just typed a whole lot of nothing (as far as replying to me goes) 'cause what's comfortable or good for you will likely be different for me. Seeing as how I've not ridden the bike, I can't just blindly agree with the supposed cons you're listing (other than the bit about forwards 'cause forwards are ass). Also, I love the exhaust and I typically can't stand the AA guns that come on most bikes thanks to all these bs regulations and what not.
When I first saw these bikes I thought they looked ugly and I was underwhelmed, but it's really growing on me. I hope they make a model with a (much) smaller engine, but still with this good suspension.
OC - I would say the Sportster S and the Ducati just fill out that sport cruiser segment, but are not direct competitors. Kinda like a gsxr 750 and a H2 are both in the sport bike category, but are not direct competitors. BTW, outstanding review!!!!
OC. I’m excited to see this new direction that Harley is going! Now let’s see what they can do about those dealers. I’ve been put off by my local dealer twice, I’ve been trying to get on a waitlist or order an Electra Standard for almost 2 years! Every time I call I get blown off.
Chase you need to get some experience on the standard, older Sportster & bigger Harleys, to get a real sense of how different this new Sportster actually is, including some research on the whole drive train between this new one compared to the standard Harleys. Only by doing these things, can it be determined whether this new bike offers superior engineering. Yeah, I have asked for a lot. But this will be a worthwhile learning experience. Like you, I too, have reservations about their dealerships.
OC! I would say the Sportster S is in competition with everything in its price range! It's not a sportbike, it's a cruiser with no problem being sporty when the time comes, and a lot of people are gonna catch that vibe if they get lost looking for sportbikes. The suspension is a problem, but Sportsters exist to feed the aftermarket!
Great video this! Great to hear opinion from a sports bike guy that had plenty of good parts and bad parts to say about the bike. Not just ripping into it because it’s a Harley Davidson
I like how you are honest about your experience as a sport bike rider and how this affected your ride. I'm currently on a Z1000 and am looking to this bike as a possible replacement or an addition. Thanks! OC
I too have ridden just about everything - oldest 1981 Honda 400 to my last bike a BMW 1200R. Yes, I too am drooling for not only the look but the motor. Yeah, the tech is nice but I’m here to ride a bike, not drive the space shuttle.
OC: This was directly aimed at the Indian Scout, but I'd say its competitors include the Diavel, Rebel 1100, the VMAX(I know its dead), and the Boulevard M109BOSS
Harley seats are always just kinda there as a placeholder until you can get a real seat. They're more there so you can see the motorcycle with a seat on it in the dealership and get an idea of what the bike looks like with a seat on it
OC: I'd be interested to see a side by side comparison of the Sportster S and the Diavel too. I test rode a 2021 Fatbob and the Pan America this month just to get a feel of how the new Sportster S would feel. Can't wait to see it on show room floors.
Me too. An updated Buell would be nice. I owed one of the first ones (1996 S1) and I only sold it cause I could no longer get certain parts for it. But the bike was one of 5000 and only 1 of 3000 sold in the USA. So it was understandable that parts are no longer available. But the Bronx with the Pan Am 1250 motor would be a serious contender in the naked bike segment.
Well, when I got my 2nd Ducati, this time a Hyper 950, I knew VW AG owned them it is better than my 1098 was. I think we're seeing Harley ownership making a change for the better here and why shouldn't they. If the majority of your hardcore Harley owners are migrating to converted Harley tri's since two wheels are hard to get onto from your wheelchair (somewhat sarcastically speaking), they need to innovate. I'm not a Harley guy at the moment, but I respect what they've done.
@@jeepstertj556 close friend, and youngest son, both work at my local dealer. First I've heard of the cafe racer. H-D is finally waking up and getting competitive.
This bike was originally going to be called."the custom"...they put the Bronx on the back burner...so they are now presenting this Sportster s as a sport type bike...for a " cruiser" it's very sporty!..but single brake, forward foot control, big tire , etc....I sure hope they bring out the Bronx!!!...
I know everyone is complaining about the rear suspension travel but no one mentions how much sidewall the tire has and how it effects ride quality I'd bet if you dropped the psi on the rear by 5 psi and tuned the suspension to rely a little more on the the rear tire for dampening you could smooth it out a bit
Harley suspension has ALWAYS been poor. My number one complaint about the motor company (pretty much my only complaint lol)! This was a really good review. Thanks
All new production (after 2019) come with rider adjustable rear suspension. BTW, it was never the suspension, but the geometry of the frames. The original Softail line from the 80's, did answer the rough ride problem rather well, by making the rear end travel much greater, giving the shocks more time to react. I put Fox progressive shocks on my Dyna, and they made the ride difference like night and day.
OC crew - C2W, thanks again for another very informative and honest opinion video. I've liked it since it debut and like it even more with your ride review.

I never even had a though of owning a Harley but now I'm thinking a sportster s might be my second bike.
OC: I'd be interested to see a side by side comparison of the Sportster S and the Diavel. Didn't think of it until you mentioned it
OC- I hope more people give Harley a chance with this new engine they got going on.
God willing i will own a brand new Sportster S tomorrow. Thank you for helping me understand this bike!
How is it so far? I got one too 3 weeks ago
20:12 OC : Awesome video overall !! Love that, i think sportser S is more against FTR 1200 S than the diavel.
They have a tracker model coming out for the ftr as well as a cafe racer aimed at triumph. The s model is more of a sporty bobber against the scout
@@raymondbridges7033 i agree it should be a selectable option
@@raymondbridges7033 i agree absolutely, for sporty naked bike riders, forward controls isn't good, neutral is awesome!
Definitely agree on mid controls as a standard especially for bad road conditions
Oc: You put the peg in the middle of your foot, just like when shifting or breaking. That's how most people ride.
Picked my Sportster S yesterday, you are spot on with your review!
A lot of customers actually put forwards on stock Harleys with mids, most of the time it is the very first mod they do.
definitely my next bike, I mean for 2022 model probably revised. thanks for the good review!
Harley knows that you want mids and that is why it is a $700 option
I want forwards
@@6amamoeba677 same. I bought an iron 1200 with mids, cant wait to change them for forwards.
Most who ride cruisers prefer forward controls, because it's a more comfortable riding position.
@@frankhubbardiv8711 But this ain't a cruiser.
@@NaziHampster but it is.
I would love to see/hear a comparison video between the Triumph Rocket III, Sportster S and Diavel 1260. Which would be a clear winner? Let's go! Make it happen Chase.
The triumph is 2500cc..
TRIUMPH R3 GT.
That mentality is what's killing the HD brand. This is the right direction for harley
Yea I imagine they will spend a few years running both “sides” of the company.
@@omarsalgado9715 used Harley's in my state sell at or more than MSRP
OC: Seems more like Harley's Monster (1200) to me, rather than a Diavel.
the harley bronx would be the equivalent to the monster and ftr. sporsters s is equivalent to the indian bobber and other power cruisers like the diavel
Oc: you and blockhead are the best review for sportster s.thank you for all your effort.
Your editing continues to amaze me
The sportster s is a tough looking bike, can't wait till the aftermarket kicks in especially the pipes, performance upgrades.
We all win.
What makes HD so special that it can't be compared with other bikes or brands? Don't ve ridiculous...
OC Baby!! JUst Bought mine today..great video bro!!
I'd immediately slap a knarly drag pipe on this thing, high flow intake and a tune. This thing would ride and sound like a beast! and stay cool!
OC. I own a 1260s diavel im excited on how this compares… great job on the review concise and thorough… more power…
Great review, also in Atlanta area, used to be sport bike rider, now Harley, Really like the new Sportster S, may end up pulling the trigger...OC
Agreed. People aren't going to cross-shop the Diavel and the S.
The Sportster S is a direct shot at the Scout.
Just got mine last March and let me tell ....it's a keeper....it could be your daily or Sunday ridearound.
The fun thing about that bike is that it can and WILL carry the front end throughout just about the entire rev range in 1st gear and part of 2nd
Oc i’m riding a 2008 buell lightning xb12 and now considering the sportster s .thank for the review.
Ruroc and a HD, freaking legend doesnt care what you think
C’mon Harley, build a V4 and get into MotoGP, I dare ya! 😏 Sweet review, sweet bike, finally HD - about time.
You say you think Harley dropped the ball with the forward controls but we all know that every time somebody buys mid controls HD gets another soul.
I actually remember the shaky voice lol I was surprised you didn't mention it in the press launch vid
Love this. Every vid I watch I get more convinced this is the bike for me. Thanks Chase! OC
this bike is looking amazing and is insanely fast
I think the engine is interesting. But the bike looks absolutely horrible.
Chase has become one of my favourite motorcycle reviewers 👍
I am SO excited for this bike. I will own one eventually
Great video this! Great to hear opinion from a sports bike guy that had plenty of good parts and bad parts to say about the bike. Not just ripping into it because it’s a Harley Davidson
We need an Indian Challenger First Ride
Go @ Indian, my guy. We have been trying lol. Can’t hurt to have some help getting their attention 😜
I know they’re completely different but I’m curious to see how it would go up against an mt09
You can go check out Blockhead’s ride in the same press launch. He owns a personally purchased 2021 MT-09 SP.
I like how you are honest about your experience as a sport bike rider and how this affected your ride. I'm currently on a Z1000 and am looking to this bike as a possible replacement or an addition. Thanks! OC
Erik Buell had the right brake design. Stops on a dime and less unsprung weight and you can see the beautiful wheel.
OC ,the diavel comparison makes sense 👌
I too have ridden just about everything - oldest 1981 Honda 400 to my last bike a BMW 1200R. Yes, I too am drooling for not only the look but the motor. Yeah, the tech is nice but I’m here to ride a bike, not drive the space shuttle.
OC: This was directly aimed at the Indian Scout, but I'd say its competitors include the Diavel, Rebel 1100, the VMAX(I know its dead), and the Boulevard M109BOSS
I also think so, also kinda against the FTR 1200 S with its unique niche.
@@p.chakraborty4453 Agreed!
I'm super excited about this new engine.
I'm dying to get my hands on one dude ! You're lucky!
OC I'm really hoping they do the Bronx now.
I'd like to see you ride a XR1200 and see what you think about a little older Sporty HD. FYI it has rear sets.
I sold mine but I loved that bike.

If they come out with a version with Ohlins suspension and dual Brembos up front I’m buying one!
Great review!
The bike definitely looks appealing vs the rest of the line-up.
And yes, I would consider it a Diavel “competitor “
I know everyone is complaining about the rear suspension travel but no one mentions how much sidewall the tire has and how it effects ride quality I'd bet if you dropped the psi on the rear by 5 psi and tuned the suspension to rely a little more on the the rear tire for dampening you could smooth it out a bit
or wear rear tire prematurely
@@rubensahak9178very possible
Harley suspension has ALWAYS been poor. My number one complaint about the motor company (pretty much my only complaint lol)! This was a really good review. Thanks
Agree absolutely
Evident on the dyna too.😂
All new production (after 2019) come with rider adjustable rear suspension.
Just got the 2022 , I love it
Update, nothing but problems so far! Had a no start problem and they said they had to replace the starter and bcm. Took it to the dealer for my 1k oil change and they broke it, all parts are on back order and the oil change was $330 🤦♂️
