2024 Sportster S (RH1250S) Test Ride and Review

  • The Sportster line has gone through a massive change in recent years. From the Air-Cooled Evolution engine to the Revolution Max engine. We are now at a point where we no longer have any of the old Air-Cooled Evo engines. The Sportster S is the top-dog of the 3 "Rev Max" Sportsters. Matt and Nick of Laidlaw's H-D sit down and discuss all the details of this 2024 model year 1250 cc Sportster. The bike has been relatively the same for the last 3 years since it's launch on 2021 but it's position within the lineup has been changed since there has been some movement within the family. The guys at Laidlaw's H-D give us all their thoughts about the bike and make their recommendation of who it's best suited for.

Great video! I think Nick is right, there's something about the Sportster S that makes you want the Bronx even more. I think it is that the RevMax goes beyond the classic cruiser that the EVO Sportster was. It is the opposite of what the nostalgic masterpiece was. Would love to see it in some other versions as well, perhaps a retro mod XR 750 style bike or maybe a cafe racer. Keep up the great work guys, love these discussions.

I think the forward pegs are stupid, it needs mid pegs. I have the 2022 Pan Am Enthusiasts Collection and it is just fantastic. I have a V&H muffler which is just amazing, boosting bottom end power and torque (under 5,000rpm), making it more ridable and boosting above as well, and it seem to make the motor run better. I had one of the first released in the country when it came out. Very fast and capable bike. I just traded my 21 Sportster S in for a 24 Sharkskin Blue LRS. The old body just didn't agree with the long rides through the mountains anymore. A few hour ride was fine, anything more was brutal.

Matt, I love your channel and reviews. The information you provided over the last five or so years helped my wife and I choose the bikes we ride. When we decided to make our bucket list trip (3200 miles round trip) to Sturgis, we decided to upgrade my wife's bike from a 2019 Sportster Superlow 883. My wife's requirements were light, maneuverable, comfortable, cruise control, performance, and Harley-Davidson. Everyone was pointing her to a Softail. She didn't want a 700 plus pound motorcycle. We rode everything Harley-Davidson had to offer at Demo Days at our local dealership. She eventually rode the Sportster S and right away she told me "This is the bike I like. Build me a cruiser out of it." I added handlebar risers, the rear seat and passenger backrest kit, swapped the forward control pegs for boards, added Italian leather saddlebags from Limit Garage, and the windshield from our 1976 CB500T using the H-D brackets. The trip in 2022 was a huge success. More than 6000 miles later, she loves her 500 poundish Mineral Green Metallic Sport Touring bike. She and her bike get attention wherever we go. I just wanted to let you know, the Sportster S can be a lot more than an around town sport bike.

I mean I get that mentality once you already have a bike, but if you are in the market right now, and you think you are regularly going to be doing long distance rides, I think you will be doing yourself a disservice by not considering a street bob rather than the sporster S. Once you have a bike I agree, send it. If you go back far enough on this channel you will see me riding the buell 1125R I had to Death Valley with the crew before I even worked here. I was much more comfortable the second time we took that trip, because I was on my low rider s with cruiser control, fairing, and saddle bags. I would still take my buell again if it was the only bike I had, but not factoring in what kind of riding you plan on doing when buying a bike is silly, especially when we are talking about me reviewing the bike.

I personally feel like the sportster S could do with a few changes. Either that or another model that’s a little more performance based. They need to lift the suspension a little bit, give it mid or rear controls standard, and swap out that front tire For a 120 wide, duel disk front brakes, and swap the rear wheel to a 17 inch. Could call it the XR 1250. Would satisfy all the people who are still wanting the Bronx. And would require minimal changes to an existing bike

Greetings to all. Well, in my opinion they completely damaged it, I know that Euro 5 has its demands. I have a 2020 1200 sportster that I would never change for that one. Harley should have only changed its engine and not touched its aesthetics except its analogue to digital system, thinking a little more about the customer and not about the company that is certainly going downhill. Why not include a tank with more gas capacity, say 4.5 liters or more, and some suitcases and leave us the monkey hanger that we love and was typical of sportster in the past? All this in gratitude to the customers and the sportster that gave the brand so much fame and glory in the past. They should listen to customers and be grateful.

    @clintwoodruff1187 หลายเดือนก่อน

Uhh, it may not matter much to some, but the Sportster DID NOT start off as a monster performance bike !
In fact it was a 'low compression' bagger style bike, that came with a front " crash bar", a BIG gas tank, and long fenders front and rear ! It was only because some dealers went to HD jumping up & down for a more high performance model they could find success at the Flat Tracks with, that a big shot at HD agreed to give them a race bike, ( 100 made ) on a trial basis. The deal was if they don't sell, "never again" !
The bikes had no battery, no generator, no lights at all, shorter more bobbed fenders, and more compression than the original. Strictly a racer, hence the designations "XLCH", which arguably stood for " Experimental, Light, Competition, Hot. The bikes sold like wildfire & so for 1958 they hung lights & a generator on them and the rest is history.
They were indeed a monster in those early times. Especially after a few guys found that you could put the KHK Flathead model
" 4 9/16" flywheels in them ( up from 3 13/16 ) and create a Super Monster ! As the 60's rolled along, other items to compliment their performance came along on the after market, such as, bolt in Sifton cams, big S&S carburetors, better valve springs to accomadate the higher lift cams. And a host of other offerings to make the" Super Monster " truly unbeatable ! Sportsters nearly single handedly ruled the drag strips, Flat Tracks, and Street Racer scene throughout the 60's ! ( I said," nearly " ! ) But it didn't start like that ! Thanks to those dealership guys who went screaming to HD for "MORE POWER ", that we all had so much fun
    back then for about 13/15
years being TOP DOG ! After that, we just kept riding them just because they're COOL ! Even though they may not, they still sound like they'll rip up the asphalt if you bury the throttle ! Ironhead, Evo model, doesn't matter. They all sound like they'll eat you alive !
I started on Sportsters as a young man. Now 77 years old, I still ride a 2009 NIGHTSTER, SPORTSTER ! ( thats the "REAL NIGHTSTER", for you younger ones.) I can tell you I don't like that thing they call a Sportster s. They are everything a SPORTSTER isn't. I don't mind they had it built in Asia... They just should have called it something else.
The greatest times of my life were spent cruising my SPORTSTERS, no doubt at all ! If I could live it all over again, I'd do the same thing all over again ! And I wish these younger ones could experience what I did back then ! Oh, Wait ! They can ! There's still lots of them out there waiting for a rider to fix them up, & go make thunder !
Thanks to Laidlaws Harley Davidson back in the day , for always having the parts to keep us Sportster guys rolling. That was the old dealership, when Bob Laidlaw used to run it.
And one more thing to Jerry Laidlaw, it took 20 years after you beat my Ironhead in a drag race, with your Evo Sporty Dude, but yeah I finally got on a Evo model ! You were always a "gentleman". Much respect.

I will let you guys know what I decide in a couple of months.

Good review. I like the fact that at the end the bike was compared to a naked sport rather than a muscle cruiser. That is close. It is actually a naked street bike with a foot forward peg (there is no other production street bike with that setup). My only complaints are that the stock seat does not make you feel secure with the torque, it definitely needs a back lip and the gooseneck needs to come back three inches to the rider to take the bend out of the back (Corbin Smuggler seat and a $50 riser fix that though).

The revmax will never be in a frame. It kinda defeats the whole point of that engine.
The real question is if we will see classically styled cruisers with the revmax. The closest we have is the nightster, but nothing is stopping HD from using the revmax to build something that looks more like a low ride FXLRS.

See I love the Chocolate engine and really dislike when a bike is all black, I feel that the details get lost without some sort of accent finish. Doesn't have to be the chocolate finish of the S, could be the bronze of the STs, Chrome, black when used on a bike that is mostly chome, or an accent color pop. But all black everything just isn't my style, I feel like it turns a bike in a blob visually. But we all have our preferences haha!

      Different heads maybe…

    • @TH3G0ODGUY
      @TH3G0ODGUY 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

The 975 models are two plug instead of 4 plug. The larger diameter pistons of the 1250 benefit from two plugs per cylinder so that there is a more complete burn of the air fuel mixture.
The pistons in the 1250 are massive (like bigger than Milwaukee 8 pistons despite the smaller displacement), with a very short stroke, so if you run a single plug the flame front is actually too slow to cover the distance from spark to the outside of the cylinder.

The Scout isn't a touring bike, but with saddle bags they can be and it without the luxuries is more rewarding.
HD could smash Indian if it wasn't for that exhaust design limiting after market options.
It has more hp, more tech, better brakes, similar price to the Scout, looks really nice but with no possibility of touring it can't compete.
    Hopefully they fix it soon.

I haven't spent thousands of miles on one, but the electrical system is very similar to my Pan Am which i have my 10k mile review of and I go over technical gremlins I encountered. I have since done another 10k miles, so I'm at 20k miles and the last 10k miles I experienced almost no glitches, except when my battery needed to be replaced. When the charge was low the bike was unhappy. Other than that its been flawless since that review, knock on wood.

Even though the RevMax motors don’t sound anything like a traditional Harley motor, I really like the design of the Sportster S in and of itself; it’s not pretending to look like a traditional Sportster like the Nightster, which to me looks like a plastic Japanese imitation.
I just wish the left hand side of the Sportster S mirrored the right hand side more, and more use of metal finishes rather than plastic where possible.

I just wish that they'd do a combination of adjusting the foot pegs a bit back and the handlebars a bit further back to change the riding stance from the semi-clamshell/clamshell riding posture. Clamshell riding positions are a total PITA for any serious riding. Otherwise I'm loving the looks of these newer Sportsters. I do wish they'd have released the Bronx model, it was one that really had me tempted. Matt, the Bronx had a better riding position.

To me it feels like the new Softails are the real replacement for the Evo Sportys. I've had sportsters, softails and dynas and the new Softails beat them all on every level. All previous sportster engines are just a unit construction, overhead valve version of a flathead 45 introduced when the British started to win races in the 50s after the flatheads had dominated for decades. It's just a simple pushrod v8 optimized for racing, so if the M8 meets current emissions standards, I find it hard to believe an updated higher performance 8 valve version of the evo sportster was out the question. They just needed to ditch the rubber mount frame, counterbalance the engine internally, offer kits to easily add power, tweak the chassis with better handling, lower seat height and better suspension...Of course that would make it essentially the same as a new Softail. lol
Sportsters used to be considered fire breathing monsters right off the showroom floor, but Evo sportys were designed to be a more accessible entry point to the Harley thing and the Softails now have that honor. So this bike is meant to fill a different niche.
I do think the fat front tire and forward controls were a poor choice. It has a distinctly V-Rod feel to me and I never warmed up to that bike. But hopefully the drag racing guys will take a liking to this one too and we see some racing!
