- Mario Party is one of the most beloved multiplayer game series ever to come out from Nintendo. However Nintendo had decided to shake things up a bit when the ninth mainline entry came out, completely changing up the gameplay that most fans had come to love from the series. Nowadays Mario Party 9 is seen in a negative light, with many pointing it out as the beginning of the downfall for the series as well as one of the worst Mario Party games ever made. But is the negative reception for the game warranted or was Mario Party 9 a good game treated poorly for being different? Join me as we answer the question...

Mario Party 9 will always have a place in my heart. I got it during my childhood and it was a lot of fun. Also the Tough Enemy is such as bop especially after the boss goes to half health and it goes faster.
The track when most minibosses are at half health is called "Now You've Done It."

Dude the bob-bomb game is so fucking funny with other people. I was losing and decided that I really wanted someone else besides my brother to win the game so I predicted what he was going for unironically five times in a row just to fuck him over.
Mario Party 9 is the first ever mario game that made me discover this franchise, i used to watch no comentary playthroughs of this at my school's library computer. Not the best introduction, but not the worse either.
This game is definitely better, for when you and the boys, don't feel like ruining eachothers days, some aspects of the game could of just been polished out better.

The funny thing about people complaining it's not like traditional Mario Party is that that isn't a problem if this was your first MP like mine. Was surprised how unpopular this game was considering all the marketing and ads around it at the time

I beat on my original copy of mp9, i spent a week MINIMUM trying to beat it, thought odds are it actually took a month to 6 months to beat it.
I can't actually remember the exact amount of time it took me to beat it, but I can confirm I have beaten it

To 9's credit I'd give them some points for trying something new for the Mario Party series. Can't say the same for 10 (Which IMHO is the worst in the series if you don't count the handhelds) for mostly being a rehash of 9.

Spent hours playing choice challenge with my siblings when we were younger. The anticipation of who secretly chose what game to play made it so fun. On very rare occasions the game would even mess with you and pull up a player for game they didn’t pick only for toad to announce they had made a mistake and send that player back down.

The game that introduced it, it’s my favourite and it still has the best boss games especially Kamek’s Library, 8 also technically has the one bowser fight but I feel DS actually had boss fights with every stage, I also enjoy the Boss being skill based (unlike 9 where there’s a couple luck based especially with the coms)

I think he means bosses that can be multiplayer. DS bosses were only single player and objective based, when 9's bosses were competitive with multiple people. That was specified during that segment lol

No, it's luck. Actual psychology won't help you guessing your friend's picks right. It would be psychological to a very minor degree if you were able to talk to your friends before they make a decision, but there's not nearly enough time to do that. It's 90 % luck and 10 % knowing your friends.

The psychology is for example settling for fewer points knowing the lower placed ppl will fight for the bigger bombs, or taking a lead and purposefully impeding second place from catching up by predicting them

The bosses for each map have their own different skills needs for them
Toad Road (Lakitu and Wiggler): Hand eye coordination
Bob-omb Factory (Thwomp and King Bob-omb): Mindgames, deceiving other players so you dont get screwed
Boo's Horror Castle (Dry bones and King Boo): Memory, puzzle skills
Blooper Beach (Cheep-Cheep and Blooper): Aiming with the gyroscope, Firing shots accurately
Magma Mine (Spike and Chain Chomp): Reaction time
Bowser Station (Bowser Jr. snd Bowser): Luck, but you can screw people over in the bowser fight

I always thought this game was fun as its own thing, even if it’s not quite to the heights of older Mario Party games.
Also, what mistranslation? Ztars have been a thing before this, it’s just a joke of flipping a letter in a name. Like Mario to Wario or Luigi to Waluigi. They’re not easy to pronounce, but they existed before.
MP9 holds a special place in my heart. It’s not perfect, but it’s one game that I truly think now it’s too overhated by many. It tries to be something new, and to give its credit, it does it decently. The board are kinda mid, but the minigames slaps, the OSTs goes unironically chard af, and the visuals are gorgeous. This was the game we’re the team really improve on the motion controls compare to 8, and I’ll take. 9 is a solid game, and I’ll stand by it. Great video, and it’s nice to see someone like you defend this game

My mother, brother and I always play this game at weekends and we have fun playing it. This is also the first ever Mario Party game I ever played. I hate when I lose half of mini stars btw
Ooooo, this is a nice video! Nice to see someone else talk about this game. And yes, I'm aware I'm 11 months late to seeing this video, but I still wanted to make a comment anyways.
I grew up with Mario Party 8 and Mario Party 9, and I've absolutely adored both of these games. They're definitely very different games, but both were a lot of fun for me, and still are today. And both have elements that I return to them for. I don't think Mario Party 9 was exactly bad, it was just different, and I appreciate it for that. Its a fun game still, even if it has some flaws. It does some things I enjoy more than 8, and 8 does some things I enjoy more than in 9. Both are perfectly great games, and I love them both.
The game does lean more towards luck, but personally it isn't an issue most of the time for me. Usually skill still matters alongside the luck from my experience, and even during the times where luck reigns supreme, Mario Party is a series where I personally just prepare myself to possibly get screwed over by random chance from time to time, and to just have fun and embrace the chaos.
There are some things I don't care for in that way. Bob-omb Factory's unavoidable Bob-omb at the end is stupid in my opinion, the Whomp mid-boss is just plain bad and the fight with King Bob-omb does everything it does but way better with at least a bit more strategy, and Bowser Jr.'s mid-boss is just a luck minigame that can sometimes be satisfying if you're lucky but otherwise just lasts way too long and can't even match up to any luck minigame in Mario Party 8 or 9.
I will say that I think the Bowser boss fight is actually pretty cool. In a way, it feels like it represents what Mario Party is very well. It primarily uses the dice blocks that most (maybe even every idk since there is a lot I've yet to play) games in the series have as your main weapon of attack. It has some luck based elements with trying to toss the dice around and hoping they land on what you want or need. But there is still strategy to this. You can just toss any dice that isn't already showing one of yours, sure. You can prioritize Bowser dice to prevent his fireball attacks if you don't think you can dodge a bunch of them. You can prioritize other player dice to just reduce their score and ignore Bowser dice if you got the skill to dodge his fireballs and think that the other players may not be able to dodge them all. You can prioritize a specific player's dice, like a player who's about to win the whole game that you need to lose to stand a chance, or just whoever's currently in the lead during the boss. It is still decently luck based, but you can strategize around and find a way around it to still get victory. This, combined with it being a boss battle that lasts more than a minute (in a good way, unlike the mid-boss before it) and the call-backs with Bowser summoning other bosses for attacks at the half way point, made this one of my favorite boss fights in the game.
I also personally sometimes really liked parts of the whole car gimmick. It was an interesting switch-up that gave a unique shift in gameplay. And, it does something I really liked; not having to always go through a minigame before you can reach your turn again. As fun as minigames can be, sometimes I like just being able to traverse through the main board; The board and its events are one of the most fun aspects of Mario Party for me. So in other Mario Party games like 8, it sometimes gets annoying to play through the main Party mode because you get constantly stopped every turn by a minigame. And while Duel mode is a favorite of mine from 8 that helps with this, sometimes I prefer the normal map objectives, and the fact that you can only have two players in Duel mode sometimes can be annoying. Meanwhile in Mario Party 9, you can have decently long stretches of time where you can just go around the main map and its objectives, and you can sometimes take many turns before a minigame ends up popping up.
Overall, Mario Party 9 is still a great game just like most of the other games in this series, and I'm very thankful that it exists. Thanks for taking the time to read this, have a fantastic rest of your month!

Mario Party 9 and 10 have some of the Best minigames in the series. Some minigames in Super Mario Party and Mario Party Superstars (being some of them really odd choices) are not as good
Thanks for the content!! So, the first Mario Party game I ever played was Mario Party 10....and, I have to say, I LOVED it! It was so much fun to play with the wife and kids! Then I found MP9 and I loved it too! I had no idea that many people hated these games. I understand why people were disappointed, but I can't help but love these games! The way I see Mario Party 9 and 10 is as a "different take" on the MP series. And now that I've played the N64, GC, Wii, DS, 3DS, and Nintendo Switch MP games I have to say, I have never not had a ton of fun with any MP game. I think MP9 and 10 are loads of fun! First, the mini games are solid! Motion control only makes them wakier! Second, the mini bosses are so much fun!! Third, while the boards are linear, they also have some strategy. You can really screw each other over or get ahead if you happen to have the right dice. If you ask me, these games are solid and a great time with friends and family! They may not be the best in the series, but they still have a special place in my heart and I always have too much fun playing them! One thing I've noticed about some (not all) gamers who review games on TH-cam is that they praise very mediocre games that leave me scratching my head, and then jump on the hate bandwagon. Don't get me wrong I love every MP game in the series. If Nintendo released a Mega MP1-8 remastered collection I would be the first to be willing to pay $500 for it! But, it does make me wonder if there is a lot of confirmation bias, having the right opinion or fear of the fan base going on...
It’s a really flawed game, but I still have a soft spot for this one. There were some banger Minigames and music, if only the boards and the gameplay on them was better. I never liked everyone being stuck in the car and the boards could’ve had more variety

Before Mario Party 9, it was Mario Party 8 that everyone blame for the simple reason that it uses Wiimote's motion controls...
For the Bowser Jr boss fight, it's actually not random as the dice spins and rolls in a consistent way. As a kid I hated this fight for being luck until I found out there's a 100% consistent method to roll any number you needed by looking at the dice as it's spinning. Never lost that minigame ever again after I labed all the numbers (to beat the master AI lol).

Yeah, it’s a clear step down from the original formula, but like… it’s not the WORST thing in the world. At least… SOME of the spirit and DNA of Hudson Soft’s Mario Parties are intact. At least they had… SOME kind of excuse to change things up. I know these are flimsy excuses, but believe me, you’d be SURPRISED by how badly a sequel can miss the appeal of their predecessors, on top of making the worst possible decisions on its own merits and sending its series on a long losing streak.

No Chance Time, long and annoying animations, no longer dueling when landing on the same spaces during the last 5 turns, stupid ways to set duel wages, etc.
9 was frankly a breath of fresh air for me.
Don't get me wrong, I love that the series is going back to its roots, but I'll be damned if I ever choose to play 7 (maybe) or 8 over 9.

8 is so over hyped and it's purely because of nostalgia. It's most peoples first mario party for people my age. So they remember it with rose tinted glasses. It's clearly a bad gamecube they rushed to the wii last minute. It looks far worse than 7 and 6 before it. Also all the mini games were horrible.
Mario Party 9 has a goated minigame list, it's just unfortunate that the car holds it back. It took mario party from a luck base strategy board game. To just a generic roll dice and move board game like shoots and ladders

TLDR: Mario Party 9 is my favorite mario party game, fight me.
Mario Party 9 was my first ever mario party game as a child, hell i didnt even know the others existed (because kid brain) and i had **lots** of fun with it even when i played alone (which was all the time). I even played it again a few months ago and still had fun with it, even if i got worser at the minigames. Just playing it again after so many years made me feel like a kid again and the nostalgia i got from playing this game was also pretty positive. I really didnt had a problem with anything besides the party points but even then, i like collecting things/100%-ing games so i will push that small negative thing aside. I liked all the boards, the small story and the extra minigame modes you can do (mostly the garden one), so i like it a lot. Maybe i will introduce it to my nephews if they are older so they can have the same experience as me when they get older.

MP9 is a decent game that honestly if it were to be remade, I'd love to see a mode that turns all 7 of the boards into classic style boards.

No, it wasn't that bad. I'll admit it was too luck based and all, but it was still pretty fun, had lots of great minigames, and PHENOMENAL soundtrack. Also the restoring the night sky with the constellations was really nice, and the relaxing music track that accompanies that has a very special place in my heart.
As mediocre as mp9 may be it's still got a soft place in my heart during my childhood, but screw that last perspective game the bobsled penguins were impossible
FINALLY SOMEONE ELSE HAD TROUBLE WITH THAT LAST GAME
The only reason that I despise it was getting stuck in a backwards space, and a bowser space 6 spaces away with AI and we all rolled a 6 at LEAST 250 TIMES IN A ROW, the bowser minigames had 200 mini star pools (I wish I was joking... I lost 2 1/2 hours of my life to this.)
10 however, is one of, if not, my favorite Mario Party purely for nostalgia.

If I had a nickel every time a Mario spinoff changed the style and formula of their respective series, getting a good amount of hate from fans and both released on the same year, I would've 2 nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice, right...
After growing up with the first three games. Seeing nine and ten, I was upset too. The first three games will always have a special place in my heart. But this one is just bad. Mario party 1, had special die blocks. You had to buy them in the shop, activate them, then they would appear at random on the boards.
MP9 was my first MP, mainly because I grew up during the Wii era and only had access to a few games as a kid. I couldn’t play the older titles, but enjoyed 9 a lot, especially with my siblings. After I told my bf he was like “omg that’s the worst MP lmao,” and I’ve since played the older games with him and his friends, but you know what? It’s different but it’s still just MP, they’re all kinda the same. Who cares if 9 is kinda mid, it’s a fun time regardless. Now he’s all like “well I guess it isn’t that bad, maybe we can play it sometime” ever since people have been giving it a second chance. I only played Mario party 8 and 9 and pacman party on wii since those were my party games. I honestly enjoyed all these games with my family 8 was my favorite to play solo or with friends but it broke :( though I definitely prefer the mini games in 9 and pacman party.
As a kid i loved marioparty9 and played it so much i was able to play with 2 wii controllers on alot of the minigames which was very entertaining to my younger brother

I remember watching that video so many times when i was younger it made me love mario party 9 so much even though i havent played it
It wasn’t terrible; it wasn’t great either. I didn’t care for the boards aside from Blooper Beach, DK Ruins, and Toad Road. I liked the special dice and the mini-games though. It was a fun idea, it just go terribly executed.

When I played MP9 for the 1st time 2 yrs ago i really enjoyed it I liked the idea of everyone in a car makes the games go a little bit faster, my favorite part of the game was the mini games i liked almost all the mini games which is very surprising for a mario party game for me, I really liked the boss battles in the game my only issue with the game was the lack of items for the player/cpus to use but besides that its a very fun game,my absolute favorite game is mario party ds nostalgia reasons love the video 💯🔥
People's mostly hated it because you were driving in a car but there were so many things I had fun with when playing it.

I think the womp boss deserves some more credit. Like sure it is luck based but it is the rick paper sceissors kinda luck were the fun is in the mind games you have with the other players.
You cant fault mp9 for trying something new... you can absolutely fault mp10 for continueing the new thing despite the backlash
The only problem that 9 and 10 have is the board system. It's not based on the amount of turns. I do like that they tried something different and I enjoyed 9 and 10, but Mario party should remain Turn based
This game was released on the NSMB period of the Mario series, so the themes were all coded to that
We had fun with it for the years we played it but we always wished we could play MP2 or MP3 because we didn't like the vehicle gimmick too much
There was this one friend that was fucking good at Goomba Bowling and we always tried to beat his ass but couldn't so most of the time we played one board (mostly the magma one) and then rounds and rounds of Goomba Bowling
This was my first ever Mario Party game so I grew up on this and it was such a good game for me when playing on the Wii
we always play this game when with my cousins and its so extremely fun, our go to is magma mine, then going for whomp and chain chomp (i swear chain chomp will be there no matter what) and the only two other mario party games ive played are 2 and ds and while i didnt play then for nearly as long i dont really see a problem with mp9's formula, there are so many games in the franchise if one is drastically different you really arent losing out on much
I really love this stage in gaming where the kids who played these trashed on games growing up can see the fun in games that older fans hated. Happend with GameCube and now the wii/wiiu games.
Mario party 10 was my first Mario party so I do like this gameplay style but its still bottom 5 Mario party games after replaying it with friends. Just like with paper Mario sticker star I wish I never went back to it as an adult bc now I realize how flawed they are.
Mario Party 8 and DS were the only ones I’ve played, but I’m glad I never got 9 or 10

Honestly, I've been really enjoying this game. My friend accidentally downloaded this instead of 8 for her Wii, and it was a ton of fun to play. I'm still not quite sure if I like the car mechanic, and I feel like the game is more luck-based than a lot of other Mario Party games.
But this game is so, so charming. The music, visuals and board designs are just incredible.
I don't like the mini star or captain system, and I'm iffy on the car. But everything else about this game is great.
Mario Party 9 was one of the games on my childhood. While objectibly isn't the best game, for me is one of the best (biased opinion). The minigames are really good and the side game modes are good too. My favourite side game mode is choice challenge without a doubt. The songs I like are:

Fun fact: On the bingo captain event on Bowser Station, there's a small chance of Bowser appearing and making that, if you do a bingo, instead of getting ministars you get mini ztars.
