    My mom swears by the original Mario Party. Part of it is nostalgia, since it was the first video game the family ever owned, but it's also one she's still pretty good at twenty-some years later. I can't surpass her when it comes to spinning the Control Stick, and she has a timing for Balloon Burst that I just can't emulate. It's honestly kinda nice, having a game where even though it can all come down to luck, she's able to use some skills I never got to come out on top now and again.

    "Lower lows, but higher highs" perfectly sums up 3. I like its QoL improvements over 2 (like more items) but I prefer 2 since it has fewer things that bug me. I gotta disagree on one thing, though: MP1's still got the best soundtrack of the series, done by the great Yasunori Mitsuda himself. Warp Pipe, Rainbow Castle, Engine Room, Eternal Star, minigame rules, victory music, most minigame tracks... it's a beautiful game to listen to, and I wish later games kept its soundtrack.

    I used to wake up early in the morning just to play 50 turn games with the CPU in pretty much all of these games and I still had a lot of fun with those personally, there's just something really comfy about just popping in a game of Mario Party, listening to the music and sucking in all the bright visuals on screen that put me in a happy mood and no game's ever really replicated that for me outside of Kirby Air Ride.

    • @zjzr08
      @zjzr08 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      It is kinda funny when someone says "single player Mario Party isn't fun" when that's how I basically play them - Easy and Normal CPU is your way if you just want a chill experience, while Hard and Brutal CPU feel like there is some challenge but still easy if you're already experienced.

    Despite the fact that 3 has some stinker boards and a few REALLY bad mini-games, it's still my favorite of the N64 trio. I think the variety of items allow for it to be one of the most strategic games in the series and you can pull off some seriously big brain moves if you get creative enough with your combination of items. I value that aspect of the game a lot.

    13:57 I much prefer MP1's version of this mini-game for two reasons. The 1st reason is that I like the aesthetics of admittedly delicious-looking mushrooms over a body of water than drab metal platforms in unusually dark lava. The 2nd reason is that I have mild colorblindness and if Toad holds up a white, teal, or pink flag in MP2's version, I cannot discern the difference between them and I'm at a disadvantage. The colors from MP1 are way more distinct from each other.

    • @egon3705

    Great video as per usual! The skeleton door on the left of Waluigi Island is for avoiding the bomb in the middle of the board. Also, for the spinning junction in the same map (assuming the tv's input doesn't ruin you), you just press A when the direction you want to travel in is lit up. This works regardless of how fast it's spinning. So it's less luck-based than it appears.

    Thank you for praising the battle mode in Mario Party 3! I loved that mode and would try to encourage friends and my brother to play it because I liked it so much. It tracks pretty well with me though because I would later go on to become a fan of games like Magic (shame that Magic is a dumpster fire now thanks to Wizards).
    You can see the similar elements with how you try to deplete your opponent's life total using creatures you summon with different stats. You even have creatures "blocking" attacks on you much like how you block attacks in Magic using your creatures. There's also a random element of what creature you get to summon mirroring the randomness of which cards you draw in a game. It's good stuff.

    I only ever really played Mario Party 1, 3, 4, and DS growing up, with some rentals of the others here and there. 4 was always my favorite, but if we're talking the N64 trilogy, 1 obviously doesn't hold up just because of the minigames where you rotate/break your analog stick. I played half a board of 3 a couple months ago, and besides the randomness, I think the game is still a lot of fun and deserves more credit. Great minigames. Always heard great things about 2 over the years, but I don't think I ever played it.

    1 I tried and got pretty bored in fast, also its control stick spinning did give me a torn blister as a kid. 2 Is amazing I love the upgrades as you said. 3 is where they got it almost perfect because you gotta strategize for several things that might happen and there's so many video games it doesn't get boring. Then they dropped the ball with 4 and 5 and improved on 6 and 7 but no return to the quality and charm of 3.
    The cool thing about the Wii is you can emulate 1 2 and 3 almost perfectly and play 4-8 natively, only one game in 3 is rendered luck based because of a graphical glitch.

    I think the reason people complained about MP2 and not smash ultimate was because of the way it was marketed. In Ultimate, you know damn well it is a compilation of all of the previous smash games. This game is all the previous content with a few additions. You know exactly that older content re-hashed is what’s in store and *that* is why you got it.
    However, MP2 lists itself as a brand spanking new entry in the series. The back of the box lists “64 new and updated mini-games” so people would probably expect mostly new with around 5-10 returning ones. However, a little under a third returned from the previous game, it feels like they got ripped off from how the back of the box understated how many would be returning. (Even though it never listed how many would return)

    I've never understood those who say the N64 Mario Parties look bad, I still swear by them being among the best looking games in the series (even if some concessions have to be made for it). The pre-rendered backgrounds used for the board maps are SO detailed, there's not an inch of wasted space in them. You can really tell the shift away from pre-rendered was a struggle, too, since Mario Party 4's boards are all just metal beams floating above a pretty generic background. 5, 6, and 7 managed to make boards that were more detailed than 4 (with the advantage of added verticality that the 64 games couldn't have), but even then there's nowhere near as many details as 64's boards. The only game that I think comes close is Superstars, but even there it's missing a good deal of things that the 64 boads had- Superstars Horror Land, for example, has no leaking ketchup bottle or highway full of ghosts.
    As far as Mario Party 2 vs Mario Party 3 goes, I definitely liked 3 more as a kid due to all of its added features, but when going back to play them, 2 absolutely reigns supreme. Aside from what was mentioned in the video, it's just a much more balanced game. There aren't any absurd broken items in 2, and it has the most balanced 1v3 minigames in the series. 2's boards, aside from Mystery Land, are designed in such a way that you can make pretty extreme comebacks via a tight strategy, rather than just having to rely on luck. 3 just doesn't hit those notes much at all.

    I'm now at the Waluigi's Island part, and some of your gripes are actually solvable. The roulette is predictable (I think by pressing to where it would land), the westward Skeleton Key route is mostly to avoid the death circle when the coutdown is close to 0, the other Skeleton Gate is for Chance Time (which to be fair a lot of gates in these games are mostly for these), although I agree maybe they could've added a more space variation in the path.
    I think 3 is great if you Solo play...which frankly I do as I play in an emulator and I don't have others actually playing it with me, hehe.

    You are 100% wrong on Waluigi Island.
    The directional path in the middle of the board is easily timed. It's the same timing every time, regardless of how fast the spinner is. Just wait for the arrow to pass the direction you want to go and you will follow that direction. This is because the spinner is buffered and will allow you a good chance to choose your direction. Never once went the way I didn't want to go on that spinner.
    The gate on the lower left side of the board is incredibly useful. It may seem useless if you are unfamiliar with the board, but the lower center of the board has happening spaces which count a timer down. When the time reaches 0 and you are in that circle, all of your coins disappear. That makes having a skeleton key in this corner the most useful in the game because you can go in a loop and prevent this from happening.
    You've also missed the point of the gate on the lower right of the board. It not only saves you a few spaces, but prevents you from going to the bank as well as gives you an opportunity for Chance Time. That gives you +5 coins, +3 spaces, and an opportunity to get yourself back in the lead if you have enough spaces. Not a bad deal.
    People consider this among the best boards not because it has Waluigi on it, but because it challenges how much you're willing to gamble. You could end up playing Game Guy or Battle 4 times in a turn because of the upper right side. You could be rolling in hundreds of coins and then instantly lose it all. You could end up with incredibly bad luck and have a star on the top right corner. Is it shitty? As incredibly uncommon as it is, it could happen. But that's what you signed up for. MP3 has among the best high-low moments with Waluigi Island being among the highest of the high to lowest of the low with its board structure. Never had more fun on any other board.

  • @DarkSim64
    @DarkSim64 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The perfect Mario Party game IMO would be a rom hack that puts all 1-2-3 in the same game. You could choose any board from MP1-2-3, all minigames from 1-2-3 are in, and the item system from MP3

    I didn't even notice the lakitu whenever playing shy guy says in Mario party 2 until you pointed that out. Anyways I group of the 90s and my first experience with Mario party was Mario party 2 would I rented it from Hollywood Video and I had a fun time I didn't complete the whole game but I had some fun with it. I then found Mario party 3 available to do the later at 5 with video and rented that and absolutely love that game. I love how the title it literally says 70 all new mini games and I love the mini-games in Mario party 3.
    I didn't play the first Mario party until several years later at my high school I was in at the time. People love bringing in their N64 and occasionally somebody brought in a PS2, but it's quite clear that the N64 was the highlight with Mario Kart 64 and why did play Mario party 1 for the first time there. I'm pretty sure I played Mario party 5 on the GameCube before I played the first Mario party.
    For whatever reason I skipped Mario party 4 I'm not sure why, but yeah I had rented Mario party 5 from Hollywood Video back in the 2000's and had a pretty great time with it. My only experience with Mario party 6 was playing some kind of demo at Toys r Us or something. I actually had never seen Mario party 7 until many years later.
    Mario party 8 became my favorite Mario party game and yeah I admit I enjoyed the motion controls and also the mini games that didn't require motion controls, but I think we all know the reason why Mario party 8 became my favorite and that is that City tycoon board that's kind of like playing Monopoly but way more fun because it's Mario characters and there's mini games. I also enjoyed the other boards on Mario party 8 as well although I wasn't very much into the Donkey Kong board though.
    It was really cool to see Mario party 1 and 2 get added to the N64 switch online as now my wife and I have played a lot of Mario party 2 together and while we played Mario party 1 but then play it much. It's quite clear that Mario party 1 hasn't aged as well especially with how brutal is with losing coins in mini-games. Mario party 2 like you said it's a vast improvement over it.
    And I hope like you're saying in that pic of Mario party 3 in the platforms that came out for I really hope it comes true that Mario party 3 does come out on switch. I enjoyed Mario party 3 more than Mario party 2 and it was my favorite Mario party until I really got into Mario party 8.

    I do think that both Space Land and Pirate Land are a bit too aggressive with their early game happening spaces especially considering how large the board is. Pirate Land especially can spend most of the game stuck on the first 3rd of the map if you're unlucky. I do like the laser idea in Space Land, but the board just feels a bit too big for it with very little going on mechanically in the top left outside of the second item shop
