I’ve said it all along; no one is better at pushing people away than BoJack. If he truly disliked Mr. Peanutbutter, he would have driven him out of his life decades ago.
He does very consistently try to, but Mr peanutbutter is so persistently there for him (and also doesn't listen) that time and time again bojack self destructs only to look around and relize that Mr peanutbutter is the only one still left. I do think that Mr pb inability to take people at face value is a big reason why their friendship lasts. Somtimes people just have compatible vices. I know there are friends i have that I'm now incredibly grateful for, but when I first met them I didn't like them very much as they didnt seem very socially aware. But said friends consistently put effort into hanging out with me and being my cheerleader (since their lack of social awareness ment they didnt pick up on my not reciprocating) that I'll be damned if they didn't wear me down and win my heart.
OMG YEAH. Its sad that PB has told Diane that he waits for BJ to call him, its sort of like how Herb said BJ never called him. Imagine if BJ called PB instead of Diane that night where he almost died in his pool
its really funny that starting out, everyone expects bojack and diane to get together or at least hook up at some point but he just ends up making out with her husband on live television
A small detail I think gets overlooked a lot is that we know Mr Peanutbutter is terrible at keeping secrets but when Bojack showed up drunk to ask for help with the doll and telling Mr PB he didn't want Diane to see him until he was better, Mr PB never told Diane Bojack showed up
Something to add to this is that Mr. Peanut butter grew up in an environment where he was surrounded with nothing but love, so even if he doesn’t go about it in the best way, his care and support for others is nearly unconditional.

I honestly think PB's negative traits like his flighty-ness, distractibility and forgetfulness makes him the friend Bojack needs at the end of the series. His relationships with Diane, PC and Todd failed because they became enmeshed, Diane and PC especially feeling the burden of having to emotionally support and help him all the time. PB will never carry Bojack's burdens for him. He might try but he'll put them down for a moment and forget them, however that'd always been BJ's work to do if he wants to progress. What PB will do is BE there, not at Bojack's beck and call but regularly. He'll pick him up from prison and give him a place to stay. I think there's an honest criticism you could make of PB's willingness to associate with Bojack after he knows what he did, reflective of how he'll overlook uncomfortable issues as long as they're ignorable. However I also think people NEED that kind of human (dog) contact, and I don't think you can expect people to do better without it. Those day to day relationships ground you and the fact that someone's there to check in physically or notice if something's seriously wrong is important. Helping PB with his issues and giving him advice also gives Bojack someone else to focus on, and that itself can be helpful in getting you out of your head. They won't make each other better, but maybe friendships aren't meant to do that. I think what they can do is provide the structure and stability for each other to work on themselves.

I always felt like there is a layer of BJ and "queerness" that I felt like influenced his character being so insecure. His dad having bigoted ideas on gender roles and "queer" people. BJ's mom telling him to not drink from open containers because she said Hollywood is a "town is full of AIDS.” (she said this in the 90s) and how the OG BJ narcissus painting is painted by a gay man. BJ running from male figures because of Butterscotch. Back when Beatrice was in her nursing home, she told Hollyhock about lady named Beth and how she got mad when Beth wouldn't eat her casserole so Beatrice started a rumor in the nursing home that Beth's son is gay. So many possibilities with the reaching that is fun
People tend to hate on Mr Peanutbutter, and yeah there are some good reasons to do so, however as a friend, he is untouchable. The dog is a pillar of strength and support. If he didn't get so distracted, he'd be the perfect companion
I'm so glad you brought up PB being the first to pull Bojack off of Gina. I had forgotten that detail but it is really a low key amazing and telling moment for both their relationship and PB's growth in general.
PC and Beatrice - Two sides of a motherhood coin. Both grew up in a rather dysfunctional family, with both their biggest parental figures (mom of PC and dad of Bea) doing their damnest to demean and put down their child. Yet outcome is different. PC wanting to be a mother, failing to become one time and time again, being a working mother with good ethics of support and kindness to others. Bea detesting being a mother, having a child out of pure accident on her first try, despising work and not valuing hardship of others and being openly hostile, without an ounce of support.
I always like to joke about how Mr. Peanutbutter was in love with Bojack, but man at this point that wasn't isn't love anymore, that is borderline obssesion.
It's crazy how they made out. They didn't have to kiss at ALL but it's not even a little peck...they full-on make out for like a minuet! And then it's NEVER brought up again!
You made me love, Mr. peanut butter, and I used to really not like him. I found him annoying, but you're so right about everything you said. I see him in a new light. Thank you for your videos
Now I'm thinking: What would've changed if Bojack had befriended Mr. Peanutbutter earlier in his career? Would Bojacks life have been better? Or would Bojack make PB's life worse (like he does with the others he considers his "friends")? 🤔
Depends on both of them, Mr Peanutbutter's problem is he wants to experience life like he was still young and BoJack's problem is his self loathing and escapism.
I really need to rewatch it for the 5th time ( really that good) before Netflix pulls it out of the platform this show is amazing and it gets better the older you are the first time I watch it I was 17 , now I am 24 and still this show gets to me the jokes sound and look better and I understand better and better the messages its that good

Mr Peanutbutter is an interesting foil for Bojack with their different backgrounds Bojack who grew up in an abusive home never learned what love is because of his horrible mother PB grew up in a loving home but never learned the difference between popularity and real love
I just wanted to tell the creator/s behind this channel, that I really love your content especially about bojack horseman. This series has been there for such a long time and there is still so much to talk and think about. I really enjoy listening to your takes and theories on the stories and characters. This is basically everything I wanted to say. (you also deserve this comment and every possible interaction for the algorithm, sadly thats the only way I can currently support this content) Please continue to make Bojack Horseman content ❤
Honestly their relationship makes me wonder what would of happened if these two had dated. Gender swapped version or gay couple in the closet. Both would have different outcomes. Had PB been a woman, Bojack would of seen her exuberance to be near him as flirting and definitely would of slept with her if given the chance. Bojack's problem is that he always pushes his partners away or crosses their boundaries. MR. Peanut Butter's problem is that he never matures with his partners and dosen't truly listen. But Bojack is such a static person that Peanut Butter would never have to change and Bojack would never out grow him. Peanut Butter has little to know boundaries to be crossed and Bojack can't push him away no matter how hard he tries even platonically. The one time he did actually hurt PB's feelings, PB immediately called him out and stood up to him in a way only Diane has been able to do in the show. All the other ones never really get past the walls Bojack puts up. Granted I'm sure with Bojack's self destructive behaviors he'd (She'd in an alt universe) find SOME way to ruin or break the relationship. But it probably would last longer or as long as PC and his Relationship. Comment your thoughts in the replies
Do one for Todd and PBs friendship. I realise it’s not as complex or varied. It’s just an innocent happy companionship. So it would be nice for more analytical detail and discussion
I was really expecting Mr. Peanutbutter to find out he’s bisexual at some point. PB having that strong of a longing for someone for that many years while insisting on talking to him, touching him, being with him, and having him move in with him at some point really gave some queer pining vibes that gets so strong when you rewatch the show fully focused on that dynamic. He even eagerly jumped at the chance to passionately kiss Bojack after forgiving him for a very serious rift in their relationship that made him contemplate his loyalty for a moment. I am so sure there was conversation in the writing room at one point about PB’s fixation being more than platonic.
@@strawberrydoll7042 You are so right. I think about the parallels between Herb and Mr. Peanutbutter a ton and a queer reading of Mr. Peanutbutter’s love of Bojack really ties it all together. It feels like one of the reasons Bojack didn’t want to get too close to Mr. Peanutbutter was fear of history repeating itself and him getting attached to someone in the show business only to hurt them later on and end up alone. Feels even more real if Mr. Peanutbutter’s feelings are more than platonic, like the world giving Bojack another chance to do right by a friend in the industry who loves him in spite of his flaws haha.
@harm0ny_ that's a good point. Could have been a way to remedy Throwing Herb under the bus if he sorta stood by PB in the wake of a possible backlash of him being Bi (?)
@@strawberrydoll7042 I could definitely see that. I could also see bojack thinking things will turn out the same as they did back then only for things to not be the same because people are more open minded now. Like an instance where Bojack thought he’d be able to help and make up for his past but it didn’t quite work out that way. Really interesting possibilities with the bisexual Peanutbutter arc lol
@harm0ny_ I could definitely see Bojack fumbling, well meaning and all that, around and it causing friction with Mister Peanut Butter. Plus Herb was fully Homosexual vs PB who in this theoretical scenario is bi, making their experiences overlap but still be different ( likewise if BJ was somehow bi his experiences would also be different from either men)
Opposites attract! They're both miserable people on other sides of the spectrum. One is toxically positive, one is toxically negative. They were literally made for each other
I really love this in-depth look you give to Bojack and Mr. Peanutbutter’s interactions throughout the show. I just wish I was as sold as you are. I’m afraid that even after watching this and the full show, I can’t help but feel some of this is wishful thinking on your part. Don’t get me wrong, their relationship does evolve, but sadly not nearly enough as I think we all expect. Mr. Peanutbutter is definitely Bojack’s most devoted friend, but even by the final episode, I barely get more than a begrudging tolerance on Bojack’s part for the relationship he has with PB; he’s with him because he’s got no one else. I wish this weren’t the case, I wish Bojack out loud admitted how grateful he was for PB or how he recognized his unique charm (both things he was able to do for Todd the more the show went on). The “crossover episode” Bojack did was undoubtedly the kindest thing he could’ve done for him, but much like the series summarizes: it’s not about the big gestures, it’s consistency and dependability that matter in a relationship. Interestingly it was the last Halloween party where they acted like true, long term friends, but unfortunately there were many more episodes and interactions afterwards where I feel like Bojack’s only-slightly-toned-down coldness shone through.
I have a secret theory (that I haven't fully convinced myself of yet) that Mr. Peanutbutter is actually more savvy than he lets on. The one time I'm absolutely convinced of this is when he steals the "D" theft, so to speak. And I'm mostly there about Cordovia - like, to get out of being found out, he says to Diane, "You'll never believe this, but there's someone here that looks EXACTLY like you!" Just food for thought! 🤔
I want to watch this show again because I think my opinion about the characters would change a lot now, I watched it when I was 13 or 14 maybe. But at the same time I feel like I would cry too much again 😂
I think when he chews on his arm, that falls more under "self injurious behavior" than self harm. Self injurious behavior can be done by anyone (even though it's especially common among autistic people and people with anxiety) and includes stuff like chewing/picking your nails, peeling bits of skin off, chewing on your lips/gums, etc. A lot of the difference is motive: these things are done as a result of distress or anxiety, but not in the same way as self harm. In fact, they're often largely involuntary, unlike self harm.
I haven’t watched the video yet, so apologies if you end up addressing this, just wanted to say it before it left my head **edit** you did but I hope I brought more to the conversation with my comment, if you don’t feel so, my apologies I feel like bojack has always viewed PB as the man who ripped off his show and was more beloved after, whereas PB saw Bojack as someone who had a very similar experience to him but who’s afterwards wasn’t as positive, and I feel like this is one reason as to why PB is not only so excited every time he sees bojack, but also cares so deeply for him - he sees bojack as the troubled man he is and wants so badly for bojack to know he will always be there for him, but unfortunately bojacks ego gets in the way of this until the end of the show As others mentioned in the comments - pb did cpr on bojack while everyone watched, he told Diane about how he waited for bojack to call, and to paraphrase someone else in the comments “we can only imagine what would’ve happened that night had bojack called pb instead of Diane?” I truly feel pbs character would not have hesitated and would’ve started putting his shoes on as soon as he answered the door
I do think it's worth mentioning Mr PB's positivity is NOT a good trait to emulate. He's toxic positivity regularly, not allowing people to discuss anything bad or allowing himself to think about things that are bad. I always disliked his character for that reason. People should not see him as someone to emulate, or as an unflawed character. His flaws are as blatant as any of the other characters and discussed, called out, IN THE SHOW. It's not the cheating, though that's not good either. His fatal flaw is toxic positivity. Just like the rest of the characters it doesn't make him bad or evil, but just, Be careful about overly praising his worst trait.
0:00 Ugh. I hate when people say that. "Here's the thing." Just say the thing. You don't need to introduce the concept that there's going to be a thing.

Plus Herb was fully Homosexual vs PB who in this theoretical scenario is bi, making their experiences overlap but still be different ( likewise if BJ was somehow bi his experiences would also be different from either men)
...why am I starting to ship these two?
Toxic old man yaoi in my sad horse show 💔
Toxic old man yaoi god bless 🙏
Because you have just now realized they have a classic tsundere-sunshine dynamic.
Also, they’re pretty much canon considering they actually kissed.
Opposites attract! They're both miserable people on other sides of the spectrum. One is toxically positive, one is toxically negative. They were literally made for each other
Damm you, PosiTVity. You made me cry while I'm at work.
1:19 FFVII Victory Music. Beautiful. NO NOTES ♥
This channel is reeeeeeaaaaaaally good.
Excellent analysis
I have a secret theory (that I haven't fully convinced myself of yet) that Mr. Peanutbutter is actually more savvy than he lets on. The one time I'm absolutely convinced of this is when he steals the "D" theft, so to speak. And I'm mostly there about Cordovia - like, to get out of being found out, he says to Diane, "You'll never believe this, but there's someone here that looks EXACTLY like you!"
Just food for thought! 🤔
Actually Bojack stole the 'D' and Mr. Peanutbutter got him out by saying he did it himself
I want to watch this show again because I think my opinion about the characters would change a lot now, I watched it when I was 13 or 14 maybe. But at the same time I feel like I would cry too much again 😂
That’s why he’s my favorite character
I think when he chews on his arm, that falls more under "self injurious behavior" than self harm. Self injurious behavior can be done by anyone (even though it's especially common among autistic people and people with anxiety) and includes stuff like chewing/picking your nails, peeling bits of skin off, chewing on your lips/gums, etc.
A lot of the difference is motive: these things are done as a result of distress or anxiety, but not in the same way as self harm. In fact, they're often largely involuntary, unlike self harm.
_On live television._
I haven’t watched the video yet, so apologies if you end up addressing this, just wanted to say it before it left my head
**edit** you did but I hope I brought more to the conversation with my comment, if you don’t feel so, my apologies
I feel like bojack has always viewed PB as the man who ripped off his show and was more beloved after, whereas PB saw Bojack as someone who had a very similar experience to him but who’s afterwards wasn’t as positive, and I feel like this is one reason as to why PB is not only so excited every time he sees bojack, but also cares so deeply for him - he sees bojack as the troubled man he is and wants so badly for bojack to know he will always be there for him, but unfortunately bojacks ego gets in the way of this until the end of the show
As others mentioned in the comments - pb did cpr on bojack while everyone watched, he told Diane about how he waited for bojack to call, and to paraphrase someone else in the comments “we can only imagine what would’ve happened that night had bojack called pb instead of Diane?” I truly feel pbs character would not have hesitated and would’ve started putting his shoes on as soon as he answered the door
You should make a video about Barry. It's very similar dark humor hollywood satire
which could mean nothing.
WHICH COULD MEAN NOTHING ✨

0:00 Ugh. I hate when people say that. "Here's the thing." Just say the thing. You don't need to introduce the concept that there's going to be a thing.
geez, found irl Bojack.
@@LarrySonOfMiltonI mean he’s right
@@dasiareed2708 Bojack was often right too, he just couldn't resist being an ornery asshole while doing it!
