How to Write Great Villains - The Legend of Korra
Here is the article about increased amygdala activity: pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4980518/#:~:text=PTSD%20patients%20exhibit%20heightened%20fear%20response%20and,which%20is%20associated%20with%20increased%20amygdala%20activity

The villains of LoK are often one of the most praised parts of the series, and for good reason. Their effect on Korra as a character are immense and unique, and they each play a part in creating the extremely nuanced protagonist that we all know and love. Some more than others, but all of them definitely had a hand in changing Korra and helping her become more open-minded, patient, and understanding.
I love this series so much for deciding to focus on a different villain every single season, rather than build one up over the course of the four, even if it was largely due to thefact that they didn't know if they'd be back for more seasons. Even so, I think this worked in their favor, and the villains that they created are the best in the Avatar world. Such great motivation and understandable ideologies, despite also clearly taking things too far, so that we still root for Korra in the end.

Hollow Apologies in Bojack Horseman.
มุมมอง 141Kวันที่ผ่านมา
Bojack Horseman, as a show, contains a lot of apologizing, making up, and forgiveness. But there's a stark difference between an apology that is truly meant to make amends and show that someone has changed, and an apology simply to keep people close to you to be able to manipulate them again. This show does an amazing job dressing down what apologies work, and what apologies don't, and WHY that...

How "Escape From L.A." Plays with Suspense
มุมมอง 52Kหลายเดือนก่อน
One of the most traumatic episodes of Bojack, mostly because you can see the writing on the wall the entire episode. It absolutely loves dangling the event that you strongly suspect (but hope with all your heart that it won't) will happen in front of you and playing with your sense of tension and intrigue. A very shocking episode, overall, and they definitely earn the final climax with some inc...

One of my favorite characters in all of Avatar for sure. So well thought-out, and an integral addition to the cast, even if he's not technically a member of "Team Avatar". Being Aang's son, there were high expectations on him to be a powerful and interesting character (from fans and in-universe civilians alike). And, boy, did they deliver. Instead of making the character perfect with no flaws a...

Another suggestion from a subscriber on TH-cam (@Yezhanium ) that is insanely insightful! And I surprisingly had a lot to say on the matter too. There's a ton of comparisons to be made between these two and how they were raised, and then a stark contrast for how they raised others. And there is also a definite reason for this in what we see of their childhoods. Overall, I was super relieved tha...
Why Does Everyone LOVE Bree Van de Kamp from "Desperate Housewives"?

I know, I know. Literally no one asked for it. But I am really passionate about this show, and I had to dump my passion into a video sometime soon. She's not necessarily always my favorite housewife, as this...
Bojack's Destructive Pattern with Women

Someone requested that I do this after the professional pattern video, and...boy did we know this one was going to be a doozy. Honestly, I expected it to be even longer, so let me know if there's anything I left out! One of my TH-cam viewers pointed this common pattern out to me, and I can't believe I haven't made a video about this already! He does truly want to be a father in the worst way, specifically with a girl to raise, so that he doesn't have to face (too many) of his own demons. A really interesting and introspective look on Bojack's relationship with Hollyhock, Sarah Lynn, etc. I think it definite...
Why Princess Carolyn and Ralph Didn't Work.

This was always a point of contention among a lot of fans: how the relationship between these two characters fizzled out and never quite came back, but I think there is definitely a purposeful arc in terms of their relationship and how it affects and changes Princess Carolyn. Not only this, but I don't think they were really ever going to work, ultimately just not meeting at the right time, and...

This character was one that didn't take me long to fall in love with. I was so pleased that someone in the comments requested I make some videos about Gen V, as I really think the cast of that show is highly underrated. Why Bojack and Todd Were Never Really Friends.
Season 1 is the only good season
7:02 this is intentional. It’s why super serious scenes aren’t done between 2 humans
I don't understand why so many people hate Ms. PeanutButter to be honest, I don't know if it's because for me sometimes it's nice to have a character that helps the show seem more lighthearted when everything is too heavy and depressing or because I really see him with the humanized look that the series gives to the characters, he made a lot of mistakes and was far from being a really good dog, but I think Diane marked his development by helping him evolve as a person without always depending on new relationships (and I think that also has to do with Ms.PenautButter making the series finale sound less lonely )
I see him getting involved with younger women because he's an immature guy to deal with women who would be more serious about life, but I'm glad that changed in the end and he took it off a time to improve as a person (And I will admit that when I started the series I thought Ms. PeanutButter was in his 24s while Bojack was in his 40s/50s, I was hella surprised after seeing that they were the same age)
I myself have identified with Bojack at times, but I never thought that people would criticize anyone who tried to move away from him. Bojack often refuses to change and ends up pushing people away whenever he feel vulnerable, just the fact that he seemed to refuse to change would be more than enough, and Bojack needed that, he needed to start over and he had already hurt these people too much, Bojack's friends needed keep a certain distance from him because he already put them in too much of his own problems, for me, it was a good ending that he was "alone" to heal (And having Peanutbutter there was really a good thing, in the end he wasn't completely alone)
I get this but does that mean no one is able to be redeemed? Once a bad person always a bad person? What’s the point of trying to be better if everyone else is just gonna think you’ll never change
I really like this unique take. It's interesting to see how a relationship can be beloved and do good for people even if it isn't the most healthy. It makes me think about a friendship where I was sort of like PC, wanting someone I loved to succeed. I just reliably wanted to be there for someone, and pushed myself and them by extension to be more functional. On the other hand, I learned more about myself through them and they encouraged me to do things for me and not for others, just like Bojack. Sometimes I still feel like sharing my success with them and hearing their reaction bc I miss our chemistry. They're blocked now but even months after the fact I can't truly get over it, but maybe feeling like I can look back and say I enjoyed it helps? Love your videos!
An apology without change is manipulation.
Very good stuff here. I liked your viewpoints here. I love the journey Korra goes through and I’d say it was a much more spiritual experience than what Aang went through. And all facilitated by the incredible villains she has to face. Which includes herself. In the earlier seasons she is her own biggest enemy. And learning to see the flaws within herself and grow from it is what makes her a much better person by the end. Great video!
Makes her fat and gets her on mind frying drugs whilst enabling her narcism
Diane's statement to Bojack misses the mark. Bojack isn't good because he is not bad... he's too good at being bad--instinctively--it's not his fault. Trying to find anything to fix this bottomless pit that sucks up most of the good moments is all the character sees...
im sick of some people assuming sorry is some magic word that will just automatically make everything better
That moment with PC hits me so hard. There are times I imagine how great it would be to be a father, but I'm worried that I would be terrible at it and/or have these kinds of feelings.
I think when he chews on his arm, that falls more under "self injurious behavior" than self harm. Self injurious behavior can be done by anyone (even though it's especially common among autistic people and people with anxiety) and includes stuff like chewing/picking your nails, peeling bits of skin off, chewing on your lips/gums, etc. A lot of the difference is motive: these things are done as a result of distress or anxiety, but not in the same way as self harm. In fact, they're often largely involuntary, unlike self harm.
im writing this after the compilations at the start, not all of the apologies shown were hollow some of them were honestly said with a lot of inside and regret. especially the situation regarding kelsey Jannings deeply troubles Bojack and this apology out of all of them was the most sincere one out of all of them funnily in my opinnion for the most inisgnificant "major" fuckup. i would love to pose the question why BoJack feels so sad about this specific relationship, did she give him a sense of worth he never got from anyone else or is he just upset that secreteriat turned out the way it did and with her they could have made the movie bojack wanted to make?
I cried my soul out the first time I saw 'The View From Halfway Down', and it takes a LOT to make me cry, I love this show so much ❤
Ehhhhhhhh - Amon and Zaheer are great Villains. Unaloq is.....no. Sorry I can't do it. They had the seed of something good but then veered off the rails into him just being influenced to becoming the Avatar of Evil. But that season was rock bottom bad. Kuvira has potential but they burned that by not giving us any of her motivation except through exposition in the last episode. I think they resolved Amon's plot too neatly. It needed to be more than he had an evil father.
Saying sorry is different than showing your sorry remember the difference.
I really wish Bojack and Wanda got back together.
Korra is an interesting show but I do see why people hate the show.
I think it’s just because Jenson is so hot. That’s all.
Hmm....hey, so if you do positivity posts, how much would you charge for me to commission you to give TH-cam just ONE positivity video about RWBY?

You’re welcome
bro talking bout bojack like he's a real person 😂
“you’re BoJack Horseman. there’s no cure for that” is STILL my favorite line in the whole series. it’s so haunting, nihilistic, simple and complicated all at once. obsessed.
when they casted Ed Helms as the super dorky and loving dad and husband, I was like, “YEEEEEEEAH! THAT’S WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT!”
Is it, like, reasonable to think that someone really wants to change while being unable to?
Korra was a phenomenal series, and one that imo was better than ATLA. The villains were obviously the best part, and Korra was a great protag to go against these villains, and have a character that grew so much to the point we saw her go from a teen to adult (iirc she's 20 or 21 at the end of book 4?) So we see growth, downfall, trauma and rise respectively. LoK imo is the better half of the two but I love both series. But LoK is the one I return to more
my mother divorced my father because, despite of him being a good person and a good dad, he never changed. every time he hurt her or is, he would apologize and not change. he would do it again a week later. my parents were together for 30 years. he knew exactly how much it hurt her every time he would get angry and break things, scream and curse at us. and for 30 years she dealt with it with a smile because it was "better than violence", when it was in fact not. he would do it to her, to me, to my brother, to my grandmother. he never listened to me when i talked about the things i loved. he never took my mom to see a movie she wanted to see if he was not also interested in watching it. he didnt take us to the park, or on road trips, he never asked me what my favorite color was. when my mom gave him the divorce papers, he was shocked, genuinely shocked; he never, ever thought she would divorce him. why? because "i always apologize when i do something that hurts you and our kids". he always apologized. my mom almost gave up on the divorce, I almost gave up on leaving our home and moving out. but then i remembered Bojack, and how meaningless all his apologies were when he refused to change and stop hurting the people he loved. my father is still the same man. he still does not know my favorite color. i love him, as I always will, and I will care for him until his death, but I do not forgive him. and it's ok.
Does anyone else….really dislike him? Am I alone?
not some nostalgic fan here wants to deny your appreciation of the villain writing from LOK 😂
The closest thing iv seen to Judah getting....not even 'hate' just people preferring Ralph Stilton as PCs partner. Which I understand, but i love Judah as a person and as a partner. The biggest difference between him and Ralph is that Judah understands PCs need and love for her job despite the bad times. Not only does he accept that the job comes first, he supports her as the Best Assistant in the World. He meets PC on an even playing field in terms of job dedication. Then add that he's great with Ruthie, is a musician (his song to PC is the MOST ROMANTIC THING EVER), looks great in a suit, is a true gentleman, has a very calming presence, has the most amazing hair/beard, hes just the whole entire package, but hes not entirely perfect either (just mostly perfect). I think people wouldnt like him as much if it werent for his flaws. Perfect characters risk being annoying Mary Sues, but this show has always been amazing at giving us Real People (even the animal people). And from an audience perspective, like other comments have said, hes incredible representation. I dont know if its confirmed hes on the spectrum but it heavily reads that way. My heart broke when PC fired him and i thought he was gone for good. Even without a romance, everyone needs a PC, but PC needs a Judah. (I did not mean to write this much, its just....JUDAH ❤)
i love this show so much, i think i’ve rewatched it 3 times and i’ll probably watch it again at the beginning of 2025. to see a broken man continue to damage others and himself while constantly pushing away anything good in his life. let’s me know i’m not that bad of a person lmao 😅
30:08 Even after all these years I still can't get over how extremely good-looking that watch tower guard is. 😍😍😍🔥🔥🔥👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽
Besides that he’s a mouse and she’s a cat.
Those sorts of videos are kind of a low hanging fruit. Constantly bashing BJ for his actions and saying how everything he does is just him being a bad person. The show is more nuanced thab that. Most persons perceive him as something that he is not. Then get hurt and blame him, though they could see the redflags miles away. And some issues are just straight up wanna be good people like Diane that constantly lecture people how they should live, while she isnt really a nice person herself. In a way she is spoiled with her life yet is a total pain in the butt for her friends and husband too. Give BJ a break.
There is a difference between making a mistake that hurts someone by accident and actively making a choice to intentionally harm someone, after all. I think that ultimately determines who should be forgiven.
Korea went through so much development that in Book 3, her reflexes had changed. When the seer guy blew up his apartment, Book 1 and even Book 2 Korra would've used Fire Bending to redirect the blast. It's a valid response, but Korra had been through so much development that she used Air Bending instead. That's a level of development Aang never got. Also, I think they could've done more with Unalaq to explain how he got the spirits on his side despite being so obviously evil even when he and Korra's dad were young, but other than that, Unalaq wasn't a bad villain.
Awesome video 🎉🎉
I think you are right about Ozai.
5:49 wait, WHAT?
I generally like Diane and Mr peanut butter and I never thought they did make a good couple but I'm very glad I think it be on a friendly basis and end up on a different paths Mr peanut butter gets to focus more on himself and Diane gets to live the life she wants with guy
Each of Korra's villain represents something that they're supposedly fighting for, or against. Amon: (Equality/Egalitarianism) Unalaq: (Spiritualism) Zaheer: (Freedom/Anarchy) Kuvira: (Unity/Fascism)
People like bojack because despite his terrible actions his intentions were mostly understandable. He also tried very hard to become a better person which is quite admirable.
Good one! watching the show originally, we did kind of feel bad for bojack in certain situations, he is clearly depressed, and there was certain situations which he did try do do the right thing but for the sake of comedy he gets into problems anyway....however, there was points where he could do sooo much better yet doesn't, he gets away with apologising tooo much, that it became meaningless. We all look out for someone when they are down, but if they keep hurting you you need to realize that you are your actions.
Judah and PC really remind me of my parents. My mom is an emotional workaholic and my dad is overly rational with an intense flat affect. They really balance each other out. My dad comes across as emotionless sometimes but that's because he doesn't express it like other people. His rationality helps bring me and my mom back to earth sometimes when we're spiraling, even if it can be annoying at times for him to not understand our emotions. We know he's just not prone to overthinking or overreacting. It's good for her to have a Judah after being with a Bojack for so long.
Each villain is a weak strawman of ideologies that the writers don't like.
I'm so used to watching critiques on The Legend of Korra (which I have fun watching ngl). But I saw this video and was interested. I'm so glad I watched it. I feel like the show is always put down for "ruining atla's lore" (which I'm not sure how I feel about, because they are in the same franchise, and I believe should therefore be consistent and respectful of each other), when LoK is trying to be its own thing, and branch out, with new writing styles, and more in-depth character work. I appreciate LoK for that, even if I didn't personally like the narrative choices made for the finale of season 2, I can still say that I had a fun time watching it, and I think it was significant for Korra's overall character arc. I do agree that atla's lore should have been taken more into account there, but at the end of the day, it exists, and I'm glad that it does. This video really helped me realize that I was letting other people's opinions shape everything I thought about the show, just due to being bombarded by critiques at every turn (as it seems to be the popular opinion in atla spaces). I can't say that I disagree with said critiques, but I'm thankful for the different perspective. It's nice to take a step back sometimes and enjoy a story for what it managed to accomplish. Also, you are so right. The antagonists in LoK are all really narratively solid and enjoyable to watch. My favorites were the Red Lotus and Amon, although I enjoyed all of them.
a scene i love about Princess Caroline is when she's telling Ruthie (her baby) about Amelia Earhart and while she's telling the story she's like "and she flew off and... she flew into the sun and everything was great the end" or something lol considering what actually happened to her
