I love the parallels in this show between human behavior and other animal behavior. Why does Mr PB do what he does? Because he's a lab. He was born and bred that way. He doesn't know why he does things, and it's hard to be conscious of it, let alone CHANGE. Same with humans.
@@Aelffwynn In one episode, Bojack references being scared of plastic bags flying in the wind. the hilarious thing about the Jessica Biel character is that Jessica Biel voices her. I love that she’s not only in on the joke but playing along with it. So funny.

I love how the very last thing he does in the series is to leave Bojack alone in the party, as if to say "yes, he's working on himself, but there's still a lot to do"
I've always thought Mr Peanutbutter had a more complicated character than what it's often portrayed. Him learning to be alone and being happy being alone is very important and not just for people like Mr Peanutbutter. You need to be able to live on your own, otherwise it's easy to get caught in bad relationships because you're too scared to be alone.
on my first watch, i was never really too interested in mr peanutbutter. but as i was rewatching i couldn’t help but be fascinated by him. i’m in high school, and it’s so interesting to see how he still feels the need to be accepted and loved by everyone, like the teenagers in my school, instead of being able to grow up and move on. i wish we got to know more about his childhood and how it contributed to this codependency
the need to be accepted is biologically wired into us as a social species! for which there are good and bad arguments. since your'e a youth who seems into thinking about things through a cultural lens I would encourage you to look into patterns of interrelation around the world. I've met people in West Africa who claim to have never been alone in their whole lives. They don't think needing each other is "codependent" that wouldn't even make sense to them. an interesting assignment would be to learn about cultures where people do heavily rely on each other, then reimagine Mr. Peanut Butter and Bojack both in one of those cultures. how would each fit in and what might happen.
I grew up in a small town and the pervasive need to fit in ruined EVERYONE’s life in high school. I swear to you NO ONE had any real friends. Everyone in that town would talk shit about each other behind their backs, would use each other for free rides, free food, free weed, rich parents who have a pool, etc. people would stay “friends” just because they’ve known each other since preschool and not because they actually like each other. There were clique groups that even teachers had too much favour and leniency for. It was horrific as someone who innately never fits in anywhere with anyone…. Im an artist, a weirdo, someone who actually loves my friends, im like a cat, i love you only if you earn it, not because im desperate for your approval, like a dog bred to be obedient and needy. Other kids could smell that on me and tried their BEST to beat it out of me, bullying me constantly about how i dont fit in. They didnt succeed.
amazing observation! it makes a lot of sense considering how all the women are in their 20s when they start dating mr peanutbutter and eventually grow and change when he never seems to
when you brought up the idea of "women of the generation" his first wife Katrina made me think of Helen Morgendorffer, from the TV Show Daria (from the 90s) Helen. was an independent hippy going to University to learn about the world vibes, who "had it all" with a family and career as a lawyer and had to grapple with the realities of upholding "feminine" in an aggressive competitive arena that she was a minority in. so this mean manipulative side has to exist for work. the outcome of feminism asking to be equal to men by embodying both masculinity and femininity.
Helen is such an interesting underrated character! I wish she was more explored in Daria. I love her little moments with Daria in which she totally gets her point of view and challenges her without disrespect ❤
If Bojack Horseman was still predominant today Mr. Peanut Butter would be called the furry version of Dicaprio for dating women way younger than him. It might even made him date someone of his age for once.
This is a normal phase most teenagers go through. It usually goes away as your brain develops, but if it persist into adulthood then it's probably a sign of something else going on.
Thank you for diving further into my comment! I think with Katrina, you nailed it with the 90s pick me kind of vibe. She was the pretty floaty one, but also went to talk politics with Ben Stein (solidifying the “not like other girls” thing) and then later went on to be the “girl boss” that the 00s would glorify when she became his campaign manager. This was an awesome analysis, thanks again for considering my input 😊
People say that Diane is the "female Bojack" but I actually think that mrs Peanutbutter is way more similar to Bojack that ppl give credit for. Both of them have this constant search of pleasing others and staying relevant. Bojack does this trough comedy, stand-up, the shows he's been in, the Bojack dance, the original version of his book, his New Big Role and the Oscars. Its what he said about pleasing your fans and not stopping dancing. Whenever he feels hes becoming irrelevant or rejected he either comoletely ignores whatever he was doing to get validation from somewhere else (like abandoning a Project for another or going to LA) or he straight up isolates himself They are both self centered people pleaser that are always seeking validation but in completely different ways
Bojack doesn't seem to care about pleasing others. He cares about staying relevant, but he was a jerk who didn't seem to please other characters. Mr. Peanut Butter cared too much about pleasing other characters and that made him different from Bojack.
I would have like to have seen his creepy old guy thing get addressed more, that's basically it after a certain age when you date people in their 20's. Lets be real it's gross, he's gone from same age to slightly older, to old enough to be their dad. As a celebrity that's pretty standard but seeing lets say Diane call him out again and he actually thinks about what being that guy means would have been refreshing.
I'm not gonna call him a predator, but men that consistently go after much younger partners *tend* to either have issues with their own maturity, or buy into some fucked up ideas about beauty standards and woman's worth as people. I could never see Mr Peanut Butter being actively misogynistic, but if his main concern is keeping up with trends, then it makes sense that he's going to blindly reflect the values of the society he lives in.
Idk tho.... i feel like first season (and it's okay to have it be Early Installment Weirdness) had Mr PB being slightly more manipulative? Like the set scene feels vaguely manipped, he hides a picture, etc etc But i like what he became too. To me in a lot of ways hes bojack but more socially acceptable. Theyre both toxically codependent on people, and refuse to address themselves. Mr PN had moments of being "obtusely rude". Similar to BJ
Narcissistic people can be people pleasers! That's because they're used to doing things for other people's validation as much as getting their own validation. We see this with PC and Bojack whenever they know morally they should say no but cannot say no.
I don’t know which person on the development team said this but they described Mr. Peanut butter as “a dog written from the view of a cat person”. And idk I think that sums up everything about him super well. Both good and bad.
I literally LOVE your channel. You’ve inspired me to watch bojack horseman. And I do not regret it! And you’ve also helped me a lot better with connecting with the characters. Thank youuu ❤❤
i dont like thinking about the age of his Gf to much because my inherently negative self starts asking questions like does he age in dog years and does that make him dating younger women even more gross like is it also a commentary on how powerful people take advantage of young women???
I think it wouldn't be like that, he probably has the brain of a dog in certain areas (which age's until a certain point and stops- in real life they have the mental capacity of a two year old), so it wouldn't be like he has "the experience of an 80 year old" just because his body gets older faster than if he was a human
People with narcissistic personality or personality disorder are always seeking people who match their inner wounded child. Less abuse would happen if they were able to heal
I think his first relationship doesn’t exactly fit bc he was just becoming famous. There’s a huge difference in the dynamic of his boos as time moves on, where he’s always the more famous one. That started with Katrina
I think it would be awesome to see a video about Erica. Like, it would Definitely be a joke video but she's such a wild character that I don't think I've seen anyone do. Sounds fun!
This vid is great, as I just finished MPB, it’s a good analysis. Reminds me of my mass plots of wide-class discussions I want about books but will never have. Also, I love electroswing, and would really like to know the song. Please and thank you.

Maybe it’s the fandom history in me, but the fanfic of him and BoJack has got to be great. I don’t think it’s what the writers intended per se, but I could see an amazing reframing of the show that ends with them getting together. I mean, BoJack is the person Mr. Peanutbutter most consistently shows interest in, and BoJack treats PB with consistent disdain, but it almost strikes me as friendly disdain, for BoJack. He’s consistently awful to the women he loves, after all. Having the two of them discover a romantic connection after the events of the show could also be a great conclusion to both of their character arcs. There’s also a lot of queerphobia in both of their pasts, and it’d also be fun to tell the story of people coming out as queer later in life as society becomes more accepting, which is real and lovely.
So that's the main pattern of the women he's been with. Other then the fact they were in their 20s when he first meets them I didn't get the connection with why he was with these completely different women in the first place. Good analysis.
Katrina looks like she is inspired in “blossom” Mayim bialik (the girl from the Big Bang theory), it was a very trendy look for corky girls in the 90’s
Ok no. ’m sorry Diane was the problem in their relationship Sure Mr pb wasn’t perfect but ultimately the whole Chicago arc was Diane realizing she was the problem and refused herself to be happy Sure in theory they were mismatched but it turned out Diane was just never going to be happy it’s only because the Buffalo guy gave more of himself than anyone normal would or should that she became healthy.
