Yokohama Geolandar X-AT Hybrid Tire - 5,000 Mile Review! - Super Duty Build | Part 9

  • We decided to test out the recently released Yokohama Gelandar X-AT tires.
    37x12.5R17 - Load D - 3,525 Capacity - 3 Ply Sidewalls
    Spec measurement is 36.8” unmounted. They measure at 36” installed on the truck.
    We wanted a tire that would perform well off road without sacrificing the on road comfort. Realistically, the majority of miles will be on pavement (which is true for essentially every vehicle) so road manners matter.
    We found them to be just slightly noisier than the BFG Ko2 tires which are near silent. Light tire noise can be heard at certain speeds but nearly unnoticeable otherwise. Keep in mind tire noise does increase with age/wear so we will update you as time goes on.
    They track extremely well on road. No drifting or pulling. Tire wear has been minimal and extremely even on all 4 tires. Many of these miles have been pulling our trailer or hauling the camper.
    Off road they seem to be predictable and have had good traction in the gravel, sand and rocks. We will be doing additional testing in the snow and trails in the future. They can get a bit floaty on gravel at highway pressure and comfort is drastically increased at lower tire pressures.
    So far, no complaints. Quality tire. Worth considering if you want aggressive tread with good road performance and 45k mile tread warranty.

    • @TruckCamper
      @TruckCamper  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You bet! How do you like the Ridge Grappler? I know they are popular among the full size crowd... I've run many of the popular tires. Guess it comes down to what you want from the tire. I've found most MT tires have too many draw backs and only marginally better performance in mud (not worth it). Another tire to consider is Maxxis Razr AT (3 peak snowflake rated)

    Would you say there is a significant difference in road noise between KO2's and Geolander X-AT. Which would you say drives smoother on the highway and if you could rate sound and smoothness 1-10 10 being amazing what would you rate each in those categories?

    • @TruckCamper
      @TruckCamper  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Moderate difference in road noise. X-AT has more aggressive tread... We've noticed noise increasing with wear which is normal but not a nuisance. Both are very smooth on the road and neutral handling. Ko2 is quieter. Ko2 has 3 peak snowflake rating. Both are high quality tires. Ko2 8-9. X-AT 6-7.

    What do most 37s measure after being mounted and so on. Im trying to see if I should fo with a 37x12.50 toyo rt or 37x13.50 geoalnder x at. Not much information on these tires and there true measurements. I want the bigger tire of the 2 but some 13.50s run smaller then others

    • @TruckCamper
      @TruckCamper  ปีที่แล้ว

      Believe we were at 36" with the Geolandar X-AT mounted on the truck. 36.5" mounted not on the truck. 13.5" width will rub more and need more trimming or drop the bumpstop to limit suspension compression. Toyo MT typically run larger compared to most. BFG typically run smaller than most. Hope that helps!

    I'll be installing an ARB compressor on my rig as well...I'm running E -rated tires (80psi max) and have been trying to figure how low I can air them down for off road. I'm curious what the max psi is on your tires...and you're airing them all the way down to 20psi? Did I hear that right? I was thinking I wouldn't dare take mine below 40.

    • @TruckCamper
      @TruckCamper  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice! It's a game changer to be able to air down your tires. Tire pressure depends on travel speed, load and tire. You'll basically want to pay attention more to the tire sidewall than the PSI when airing down. A small amount of tire deflection (buldge) will help with rough roads but you'll want to keep your speed down (I typically stay under 40mph). For my tires and camper that amounts to 35-40psi rear and 5 psi higher in the front (less load). For slow (under 10mph) in deep sand or snow you can go way down 10-20psi (depending on tires). Our tires have a max PSI of 50 which is what we typically run on road. Use your best judgement and play with pressure to feel the difference. Warning low PSI will affect handling and too low pressure (folding tire sidewalls) may result in tire damage especially when speed it too fast. Start conservative.

      I have 35" Toyo AT on my 06 ford F250 when I drove home after install I hated them they were extremely squirrely. after getting home I checked on line and first recommendation was to check pressure they were inflated to max press according to the door sticker which most people think is correct and would be for stock tires at max load. they said to check the Toyo website and inflate using the load charts for the specific tire I had. I went from about 60fr 65r to 40fr and 35rear it made a tremendous difference in handling and ride and those pressures are for everyday street use

    Do you think these are noticeably more aggressive than the KO2? I get that they sit between Yoko ATs and MTs, but wonder how they compare to the KO2s.

    • @TruckCamper
      @TruckCamper  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, they are definitely more aggressive than Ko2. They are better in deep snow. But Ko2 is better in basically most every other condition. I've run 6 sets of Ko2s. The X-AT is excellent on road. Fairly quiet (slightly more noise than Ko2). Track really well (no drift or pull). They have held up to some serious rough terrain fully loaded with the camper (see other videos). Deeper tread depth than Ko2. Wish they were snowflake rate. Otherwise, no complaints so far. Tread life might be a bit less than the warranty. Will do an update video soon! Thanks for watching.

    • @killallninjas
      @killallninjas 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TruckCamper Ok. Yeah. I'll be looking for that video! It sounds like..... you like the KO2s better? And even though the XATs are more aggressive, the KO2s are better in 'every other condition'?...even Mud? Or just every other condition 'on road'? I have KO2s now and am considering something a little more aggressive, but not sure about a full on MT.

    • @TruckCamper
      @TruckCamper  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@killallninjas I do like the KO2s better overall. KO2 is hard to beat... even ran them on my rock crawler Tacoma (see videos). Even in mud. There was never a trail or condition they couldn't conquer. MT tires are no better or worse in mud. Realistically, you'd need a TSL Swamper or Bogger to really have some level of mud performance. In reality, you can't spin MT or AT tires fast enough to clear the tread. I've run so many MT tires over the years: Toyo MT (3 sets), BFG KM2 (3 sets), BFG MT original, Destination MT (3 sets), TSL Swampers (1 set), Goodyear MT (1 set) and a bunch more.
      Back in the day... you needed to buy an MT tire to get a HD sidewall and durability. Today, there are many AT style tires that offer that with side lug traction as well.
      Most people buy tires for the appearance which is why MT tires are still around. Otherwise, they would be gone. Their performance is subpar compared to a good AT in every category: MPG, noise, snow, rain, tread life, hwy... but possibly marginally worse in certain "light" muddy conditions. Not worth it!

    • @TruckCamper
      @TruckCamper  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just over 22k miles. Noise isn't an issue. All tires get more noise with age/wear but quieter than a new MT for sure.

    • @TruckCamper
      @TruckCamper  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No. Wish they were! Other tires you might consider that are 3 peak snowflake: Maxxis RAZR AT, Nitto Exo Grappler, BFG Ko2 --- There are others like GY Duratrac, Toyo Open Country III, Falken Wildpeak but these are 2 ply sidewall so less durable off road.
