There isn't always a need for "exchange", it's not stated in the movie so most likely not. Besides, West Africans unlike other cultures have high regards for physical deficiencies. Albinos and ADHD type personalities in African spirituality are seen as highly sacred.
I always thought that those teeth and 2 eyes in the jar were hers. Perhaps she had to sacrifice her eyes to keep her powers. I mean, what are the odds that the 2 things she does not have "eyes and teeth" are in the jar and responding to people as if she can see through them and use them?

Props to this dude for doing his research on New Orleanian culture and practices. A lot of people who speak about voodoo and hudoo as some sort of evil when it’s just an extreme prayer. Very appreciative you took out time to learn my culture.
I think Mama Odie's past could be even darker than we realize, because of the bottles hanging in her tree. I first saw that concept in 'Because of Winn-Dixie' with Gloria Dump (ironically, also blind) and her "mistake tree", where each bottle represents something she'd done wrong in her life. I'd love to learn more about this, like if "mistake trees" are (or were) a legit thing down south and if so, what some of Mama Odie's mistakes might've been (this could really tie in with a theory I've seen that Dr Facilier was actually Mama Odie's son).
Actually, bottles are typically hung from trees as a form of protection! Colored glass bottles are used to form a barrier, keeping evil spirits out, while allowing the good to pass. ^^ This is a common practice in the Voodoo religion from what my mom has taught me.

I think that Mama Odie was supposed to be an alternate version of Marie Lavou the Vodoo Queen of New Orleans. And, a specific deity in I believe it was Hatian Vodoo was the inspiration for Dr.Facilier. He's noted as a smooth talker, skull faced, and wears a silk top hat.
Great job on finding her background as well as going in depth on her religion! I think this movie shows there is always a good and bad to everything he used the loa to ruin other peoples lives and gain power while she used them to help others when they need it. I usually don't comment but as one of the adults who watched this at the movies alone I couldn't resist.
Mama Odie resembles a lot in that of Gloria Dump from the movie, "Because of Win Dixie": both are old, both are blind, and both hang bottles from a tree. I think they're the same person, prove me wrong.
I thought you were going to mentions all the whiskey, liquor and wines she has hanging everywhere bottles as part of her dark past. Alcohol played a part in slavery, and Mama Odie may be a recovering alcoholic, or at least someone she loved was. She turned a symbol, the bottles,of her and her family's oppression into sources of light and decoration. (She has candles hanging in said bottles and they are also hanging in the tree, catching and reflecting light.) Just my musings. This video essay is still awesome
My biggest question when I see mama oodie is why the bottles? From Wind Dixie, bottles in trees often represent some sin in a person's life. So what darkness is our light barer hiding through these bottles that she'll have to life with?
I really really want to know Tiana's mothers. I really really want to know how did she became Tiana's mother what is it for her personality who is who is the youngest mother who is she?

I would love to see you do a video on Prince Naveen. His heritage is kept a bit of a mystery but I think I know his kingdom and lineage. I think he is from Scotland and descended from king Kenneth the third (he was the first black king of Scotland) Here’s my evidence. He has a Scottish accent (given to him by his voice actor from Scotland) he looks like he could very well be part African but he couldn’t be from Africa. There was also a huge influx of Irish and Scottish immigrants during the 1920s to 1930s due to famine (And they couldn’t make him 100% African Because of the Eddy Murphy film coming to America. Potential copyright violation) Naveen would be just close enough to the throne that he’s a prince of notice but far enough away he could marry who he liked. (If you go by the lineage that married a person of African descent close enough to that time to look partially black) Kennith the third was the sire of the clan MacDuff of Shakespeare notoriety in the story Macbeth. please please use it 😊
When you first mentioned Mamma Odey (forgive spelling I’m on mobile and can’t double check without completely deleting what I wrote so far) being a slave I thought that she was a maroon. A slave that escaped and avoided being recaptured by living in the bios and swamps near New Orleans. I thought maybe she learned and practiced her magic by living in one of the Maroon communities and learned from them. I don’t know a whole lot about them, but I do remember that there were some records of Maroons being able to communicate with animals and even tell Alligators who was friend and who was foe. That last one might of been a stretch though as I read it in a book that was historical fiction and the author might of just added the alligator part to make it more interesting. You’re theory was really good and managed to get me thinking about Mamma Odey in a new way. It’s really cool to picture her as a Voodoo Queen.
I think yes, that Mama O was a slave and turned to a magical queen. I thought came to mind when you talked about Dr.F, could Mama O and Dr. F be related in some sort of way or new each other in their past lives?

Fun Fact: The bottles hanging on the trees are most likely wine or beer or alcohol bottles. People drink it and hang it on the trees to scare off the spirits.
it is very possible you could be right but given the completeness of her blindness it sort of hints that in the disney version of the world she was a slave born blind and if history has taught us anything it is that in states like Louisiana who even after becoming a state after being purchased from the french slaves that were born with such handicaps and nothing that could compensate for it which would make them useful to their masters were generally abandoned in places like bayous or the like in hopes they would eventually die.

The only characters I met were Olaf and Rafiki, but now I'm seriously regretting not asking Tiana if she's a Saints fan..tbh I'm not a sports person either way but she's from New Orleans so I thought it would be freaking hilarious)
I think this is one of my favorite videos you have done recently, Issac! Loved Mama Odie the first time watching the movie and love her even more now
Your videos are always great it's been a journey following you seeing you grow up with us and the theories are always my fave videos
All in favor of naming Mama Odie a Disney queen, say aye!
YES MORE PRINCESS AND THE FROG 🐸👸🏾
my question is how did she send tiana to help sofia the first
What
Your videos are so good and it’s nice to get the full picture of these characters on your channels
Love that you dont spread misinformation about vodou and hoodoo great video
its wild how the historical timeline of voodoo lines up with mama odie’s age
She’s like your crazy and insane grandma who could tell you stories and riddles that make no sense but are just fun to listen too
I thought you were going to mentions all the whiskey, liquor and wines she has hanging everywhere bottles as part of her dark past.
Alcohol played a part in slavery, and Mama Odie may be a recovering alcoholic, or at least someone she loved was. She turned a symbol, the bottles,of her and her family's oppression into sources of light and decoration. (She has candles hanging in said bottles and they are also hanging in the tree, catching and reflecting light.)
Just my musings. This video essay is still awesome
My biggest question when I see mama oodie is why the bottles? From Wind Dixie, bottles in trees often represent some sin in a person's life. So what darkness is our light barer hiding through these bottles that she'll have to life with?
I can’t stop watching Wotso videos
I just realized that the blind and toothless voodoo queen has two jars with teeth and eyes that could be hers 😱😱😱
I love speculating on Mama Odee, this video was really fun. Hush up and look in the gumbo!
Omg this is something I've wanted to know when I first saw this movie thanks for this update!😂👍🏾❤️💙💚💜💛♥️🖤❤️💘💕💖💗♥️👑👑👑👑✌️🏾✌️🏾
I really really want to know Tiana's mothers. I really really want to know how did she became Tiana's mother what is it for her personality who is who is the youngest mother who is she?
I’m glad I found this today i needed this
yesssssssssssssss I love mama odie she was a big part of my childhood also with the rest of the princesses and the frog I love that you focused more on her!
Plot Twist: Abe Lincoln was actually inspired to enter politics by Mama Odie.
Come on with the in depth and detailed research! Awesome job!!!
I would love to see you do a video on Prince Naveen. His heritage is kept a bit of a mystery but I think I know his kingdom and lineage. I think he is from Scotland and descended from king Kenneth the third (he was the first black king of Scotland)
Here’s my evidence. (If you go by the lineage that married a person of African descent close enough to that time to look partially black) Kennith the third was the sire of the clan MacDuff of Shakespeare notoriety in the story Macbeth.
please please use it 😊
Make a video about Maldonia!!!
There needs to be a movie about Mama Odie
maybe this is cheesy to say, but hearing how you explained her story really gave me some
hope for my current life challenges. thank you!
It’s really cool to picture her as a Voodoo Queen.
lowkey, mama odie reminds me of suga mama from the proud family
Do Randall Bogg's Full Backstory.
I don’t think anyone as powerful as mama oldie would let anyone enslave her. Magic always wins
I think yes, that Mama O was a slave and turned to a magical queen.
I thought came to mind when you talked about Dr.F, could Mama O and Dr. F be related in some sort of way or new each other in their past lives?
She probably became immortal in her 70’s and just stayed that way for 197 years
An amazingly and awesomely wonderful video, I truly admire the historical research and the others fun sources you use, in your video theories.:)
Mama Odie is one of my favorite characters, Thank you very much.:D

Nice captain America shirt!!!! Have you seen Endgame yet? I liked it but I liked infinity war more.
This was really interesting thank you 😊
I adore these videos and the history you include in them, please keep it up. 💙🙏👍
All that’s great but Mamma Odie lived through the civil war and I think that’s the greatest feat of all
I would love for you to do a video on another Princess and The Frog Theory. Some people are saying Faciler is Mama Odie’s son. It would be really fun it you dove deeper into it. 👸🏾💜🐸✨
So interesting I love 💗 your theory’s are always so amazing
Thank you for this. Your analysis does full justice to the rich history Disney pulled from to bring Mama Odie to life.
Man what a story for Mama Odie
Love your videos
Fun Fact: The bottles hanging on the trees are most likely wine or beer or alcohol bottles. People drink it and hang it on the trees to scare off the spirits.
random thought; if she was around that long what if she isn't human but is a physical manifestation of the power of voodoo and hoodoo combined?
it is very possible you could be right but given the completeness of her blindness it sort of hints that in the disney version of the world she was a slave born blind and if history has taught us anything it is that in states like Louisiana who even after becoming a state after being purchased from the french slaves that were born with such handicaps and nothing that could compensate for it which would make them useful to their masters were generally abandoned in places like bayous or the like in hopes they would eventually die.
I want a second movie, that would be awesome

*“Hush up and look at the gumbo!”*
Hey wotso...ur love of history is showing 👀👀😁😁
SUCH a good video 💖
I am guessing she comes from some random swamp in the bayou lol, or she could be a "good" voodoo god but that's for another day;/.
