Coco grew up loving music. She would sing and dance with her mother and father and loved them both with her whole heart, but of course this all changed when her father, spoiler alert, Hector left to play his music for the world. In an attempt forget the man she loved, Coco’s mother Imelda bands music and the very reference of Hector… meaning when Coco approached the end of her life, there was no one to remember him or celebrate his life on Dia De Los Muertos, but why did this happen?

If you pay attention to the movie you'll know she didn't put up the photo because in her mind her dad wasn't dead. She never saw him die. It's on the line "papa's coming home"

What if another factor is that she got old and she thinks he's coming home which means he's not dead. So her putting his photo would be her fully accepting his death.

@@DarkLadyJade it was never put up because her mother Imelda would never allowed it same way she didn’t allowed her to talk about her papa Hector , but she did keep his photo hidden, but never forgotten him it’s why He tor didn’t fade away , as long coco still remembers him, by then, she was already in late stages of Alzheimer’s, toward end of her life, she began to forgetting him u til migauel sang her favorite son of her papa, remember me.

She must have had some idea on what happened to him, since all of a sudden Ernesto played Hector's song, until 1942. Either way Miguel told everyone because on Ernesto's memorial it reads "Forget You" and the tour guides switched their tour around to make it about Hector.

she never knew he died and she has Alzheimer's so not easy for her to remember, It is studied that music actually helps patients with Alzheimer's to recover it to some extent.

I can confirm that music helps gain some forms of memories. Me and a few friends perform old songs at a care home for dementia patients. I lovely to see some patients singing and smiling.

You can literally tell in Remember Me that when Hector let go of Coco he was nearly crying, and at that point he thought he would come back and meet her again.

When Coco went,” Is Papa coming?” , she actually thought her papa was still out there and alive. Since Imelda didn’t want to remember Hector or his music, she probably was aware Hector died, but hid the news from Coco. For this, Coco still has hope Hector was still alive and to come back one day, so she never put Hector on the offense because she didn’t know he was dead
ColetteDGM actually that is likely the dementia. She is regressing to a child like state so she thinks she is still young. It's (I'm pretty sure) common among Alzheimer's patients.
jomac841 Dementia eats at newer memories first.. And she wouldn’t be able to create new ones anymore.. they do have moments of clarity though.. and depending when she developed dementia or how progressive it was (different for everyone) coco could have been suffering for years or months.. so why she never put up the picture even when you could assume that hector was dead was probably to protect coco’s own daughter... since her daughter was so much like coco’s mother.. and mother’s will generally do anything for their kids... and I can’t help but think coco herself might have been hurt or bitter towards her papa because wouldn’t you be if your parents abandoned you to pursue their dream and not include you...

@@Gekk0eIn the film she also mentions how she held onto Hector's letters and poems and songs for her. Coco probably intercepted Hector's mail for her before Imelda found out, and Coco must have retrieved the missing piece of Hector's photo as well
Randomly Ramune I don’t think Imelda ever knew he died while she was alive.
While she was still alive, Imelda would be able to prevent the photo being displayed personally. In fact, Imelda probably never knew it still existed (otherwise she would have to destroyed, as Coco likely realized). And it can easily be assumed that Imelda instilled her hatred of Hector onto Elena and the rest of the family before passing. So even after Imelda died, Coco would still always be surrounded by people who would reject the photo being put up.
What i find sweet is that Coco never abandoned her love for music( probably as a way to remember Hector) and likely inspired that same love into Miguel since it is CANON she hummed to him as a baby

And it's likely because she thought he was coming home, not knowing or unable to accept that papa was dead. True, Imelda let go of her love for Hector unlike Coco, but that's why she held onto the picture, because she never gave up on him.

why are people criticizing his pronunciation? i’m Puerto Rican + Spanish was my first language, and I think it’s nice that he’s making the effort to pronounce the words and get involved in the culture enough to make a video

I think that Coco truly loved Héctor but she didn’t know that those who were forgotten would suffer the final death and fade away since she never been to the land of the dead since she lived up to a super old age. ❤️💖

I think it's partially because of her mother and partially because she was still waiting for him to come home. Putting up the photo, even though at a certain point you know it's just being realistic, is acknowledging that he's dead and never coming back

Mama Coco reminds me of my abuela(my great grandma) they have the same quite personality, always sitting in a chair, both are loveable and you want to hug them so much
Well this could be my theory but I think the reason she didn't put up his picture is because it upset her mom to talk about him. And maybe she didn't know he was dead. They never said he was buried at the cemetery, so we don't know what happened to his body after Ernesto killed him. So for a long time, she thought he would come home and in the meantime, she kept his picture after her mother tore his face out of it and the letters and poems he wrote her. And then as she got older, she developed Dementia and possibly Alzheimer's. Because in the movie, she shows signs of it with not even knowing who her own daughter is or confusing Miguel with her husband.

@@Kimu1400 As stated before the Dementia and Alzheimer's was most likely causing her to forget. She's clearly confused and lost in some parts of the film. My mom is a nurse and has worked with patients who suffer from Alzheimer's. It's really sad. One woman forgot her daughter COMPLETELY. When the daughter came to visit her she literally bursted out in tears because her own mother didn't know who she was. Coco could have had the disease for a long time even into her middle age or youth. Meaning that at that age and time there's still a slim possibility that her father could be alive. On top of that no one in the living world knows that choosing not to hang his picture could lead to the Final Death.

Salvador Pedroza well, she said “hello Julio!” In the beginning of the movie. She would probably be there at her husbands death/funeral.
My theory was that she loved her father but loved her mother too, and knew it’d deeply hurt her by honoring his memory. I believe Coco and Miguel are very similar in the way they deal with their families opposing opinions. Miguel in the beginning of the movie, loves music but hides it because he loves and wants to please his family. I think that Coco kept her opinions a secret until Imelda’s passing. Imelda’s death left her with the opportunity to speak about him more often, but still hesitant to because of her daughters hatred towards him. I think before the passing of Imelda the hatred towards music and Hector was set in Elena’s mind. And with Coco not refuting Imelda’s belief they were spread to the rest of the Rivera family through Elena. Leaving it difficult to change all of the Rivera’s minds, and without proof of Hector’s love it became even more of a impossible feat.
I have not read the novelization but from the movie I think seeing Imelda throwing away everything about Hector, Coco must have realized just how much her mother didn't want anything that reminds of her father. Or perhaps she tried to put the photo on but Imelda got angry. Imelda's influence to the family could have continued even after she died, seeing how Elena and the rest of the family hate music and how none of the deceased family members spoke up for Hector. Imelda seems like a strong-willed and determined person and Miguel is probably the only one who dares to openly disagree with her. Hector's departure without returning home has hurt her so, and yet in secret she still cares about Hector, even though she might not know it. From these I would guess she could get angry seeing or hearing anything related to Hector because that reminds her of this trauma. Now we don't know exactly when she died, but if she lived until Elena started elementary school, she might still had been dominating the family, and her hatred towards Hector and music could have eventually skipped Coco and passed down directly to Elena. If Elena was against the idea of putting on Hector's photo after Imelda's death, I guess Coco would understand and let it be because she loves and cares about Elena. When she shares the story of Remember Me, she was sharing it to Miguel then to the whole family when Elena was touched herself by the fact that the song Hector wrote has helped Coco regain her memories.

I felt so bad for Coco when they mentioned Hector, because you can see it in her face, she's super excited and wants to get up to see him and embrace him, but then Elena starts telling her he's not coming back and she falls back into despair.

Before watching the video: i always believed it was through the fear that one day someone would take the photo and try to destroy it due to hatred of the man, so she kept it hidden and a secret so that she could remember him for as long as she could.
Or, another theory, she did once in the past, but someone tried to get rid of it and split it in half so he wasn't visibly a part of it, in a quick response she tried to yank it out of that persons hand but in turn tore the picture and kept that piece for herself.

Who on earth would have scolded Mama Coco for singing to baby Miguel? By that point in her life, Mama Imelda was long gone, and Coco herself was the matriarch of the family. If she suddenly decided to lift the ban on music, nobody could have argued with her.
Lucky Vine That's the part I don't understand. Mama Imelda hated music and banned it, and was obviously alive to see her grandchildren and pass that life style down, but Coco seemed to really love her Papa and music. IF she was that passionate, why does Elena hate it so much?

Stereotypically, most white people who attempt to pronounce Spanish words get the pronunciations wrong simply because they don't know most of the basic rules of the Spanish language. Wotso probably doesn't realize that the h in Spanish is silent, and pronounced it how he thought it would sound.

They didn't know how Hector died. All they knew is he left them one day and never came back. Imelda banished all memory of him, plus all music, from their home. Coco probably kept the photo and the letters from Hector hidden away to stop Imelda throwing them away. If she had put the photo on the ofrenda, Imelda would have torn it right back down.
I think she never put up his photo because she didn’t want to accept that he actually died. During the whole movie she asks if he is coming back, so maybe she thinks he is still alive somewhere

Now this is a more sensible theory. But from what I remember, Coco might have dementia (from another theory I had watched). Her memories are foggy and her actions and pace of life is very slow. She can only remember if she listens to music that has relations to the emotional part of the brain. (especially if its like a special song, in this case, Hector's song he used to sing to her) So, Dementia might be the reason why she didn't remember to put the photo. If you combine this theory with your theory, it makes a lot of sense.
Even though Coco has dementia, her denial of Hector's death made her not put the photo on the ofrenda.

I cry like a baby every single time
it's not really a theory but at the start of the movie, we can see mama Coco to be quiet and somehow sad. We saw how she would unexpectedly talk when she would hear someone mentioning her papa. it was shown in the movie that she was "sick" cause of her old age and that's part of it but the other part is that her family is letting her forget Hector (like how Mama Imelda would) making Coco in a way, "lifeless". Since no one ever bothered to mention her father again, she slowly forgets him until Miguel saves her. When Miguel played "Remember Me", her face instantly lit up remembering her papa. She couldn't stop talking about him and even showed the letter and songs he wrote when he was still alive. She has never done this before at the start because no one would want her to remember anything that was related to music and Hector, although it was only Coco's last and favorite memory of her father.

my idea is that Coco's mother banned her daughter from speaking about Hector and even torn his photo. Even though Coco kept all the letters and the picture, she couldn't show anyone. As it's mentioned in the beginning of the movie Coco's mom was alive when she got married so Miguel's grandma (Coco's daughter) was born knowing her grandmother. So she could with ease pass on that this man is never to be mentioned in the house, no music too (which also explains why she's that crazy strict compared to Coco). Knowing that, no way Coco would be able to bring up her father ever until Miguel sang that special song which made Coco realize she may finally have someone to share her life's worries, pain and love. She loved her father more then anything in her life, but she had to hide it for her mom so SHE can be happy too, it came at a cost YES, but in the end Miguel saved her through music that Hectòr made memories with her and her family❤❤❤❤💜💜💜 💜

Oh God...if the movie wasn´t sad enought, I got a lil tear to think...Mama Coco had, a real, real sad life, it had her up and downs, I mean, she married a man she loved, she had kids, a family she loved...but...she was never trutelly happy, always felt a part of her was missing, like if she got shattered and some broken pieces were missing and so could never be complete, her father first leaves and then she has no more news abotu him (cause he was dead, btu she did't know...she didn't know her papa was trying to go back to her...man...), then she loses her mom (Imelda kind of died, quite young, I mean, she didn't get as old as Coco) and if that wasn't enought, then she loses one of her daughters (Victoria was already dead and I think, she also died young, in comapre of her mother, which means, Coco not only had to deal with her parents gone but now griving a child of her own) and finally, her beloved husband, also dies before her...dude, her life is full of tragedy!!! D,:
But it also explains it, why even if sometimes it looked Mama Coco didn´t listen to Miguel, she liked his company and enjoyed to hear him and such, in a way, that free spirit kind of remind her to her self when was yougn and more important...it remind her to her beloved dad...
...And now, if you excuse me...I need some tishies...I love this movie so much but boy, someone tell the writer to stop placing onionsaroudn the place! D,X

James James, that she was most of her life, content, but always felt something was missing in her, her dad, her love for music and free spirit...all of that, was missing for years to come, but eventually found it in a way, again in Miguel...her great grand kid...
When you realize what de la Cruz put Hector's family through, it makes you hate him all the more. He betrayed and murdered his best friend, stole his life's work, left him to be buried in a pauper's grave and left his wife and daughter thinking he walked out on them, and they were never able to bring him home and say goodbye. I feel like the reason Coco lived so long was she wanted to find closure, to finally know what happened to her father and remember him as he was a good man who loved her, not as her mother portrayed him
I would have still encouraged the love of music even after that traumatic event and still put up Hector's photo

I grew up on Disney films and have watched pretty much every single one but Coco will always hold a special place in my heart due to the ending and how the amazing music paired perfectly with it. I don’t think I ever cried that hard at end of a movie in my life but most of the tears were happy tears 😩😭

Theory: why Coco doesn't speak much or acknowledge others unless it's Miguel or comes to anything related to her papa. My theory is that she's become depressed waiting on someone who will never come home. She hasn't come to terms to the fact that he isn't coming home and believes he's alive, which is why she asks for him and if he's come home yet. (That's all I have so far)

She has Alzheimer's too. Miguel says "she forgets things often," which is a sign of Alzheimer's alongside her not moving often. Her love for her father Hector is something that still held much in her heart and is one of the few things she doesn't forget.

I didnt know about the novelization. Before i thought she loved her papa, but imelda drilled it into her head that he was bad by running away and abandoning the family. So until later on when her mind started to wither away, so did her hatred, until finally all that was left was her childlike mind were she missed her papa. The letters i assumed imelda had saved just in case hector returned, but after her death, coco found them and hid them away from her family so as not to upset them. I do wonder why she never made her own secret offrenda for him, but i think that maybe because shes in a wheel chair that may have something to do with it. That if somebody came close to the hiding spot she wouldnt be able to rush to hid or divert the person away in time

I don't think she didn't put up his photo because of a dancing accident, to me that doesn't really make sense. I think it's because it was a factor of honoring the wishes of the dead. In the movie, Miguel promises Mama Imelda that he wouldn't play music anymore, but when he gets back to the world of the living he picks up the guitar and is immediately transported back because of him dishonoring the wishes of the dead. Mama Coco was simply trying to honor the wishes of her dead mother as is highly important in Mexican culture. I think that's why she never put Hectors photo up... Because of the honor of the dead.
no miguel got teleported back to the land of the dead because he stole from the dead mama coco probably couldn't put hector's photo up because her daughter never wanted to speak of hector again coco was just waiting for the best time to put his photo back up when her daughter wouldn't take it back down and try to trash it
I'm sorry, I didn't understand a word you just said... Punctuation is kay my friend lol. I think I have a basic idea... So you said he got teleported back because he stole from the dead, correct? Well, what did Mama Imelda tell him to promise her before her left? Not to ever play music again. When he's transported back, she says, "2 seconds and you've already broken your promise", this implying he broke his promise to play music. If you are implying how he got there to begin with, yes it is to deal with him stealing from the dead, I will admit that part. The other part you bring is that Mama Coco didn't put up Hectors photo because of her daughter not wanting to speak of him. But that, to me, makes no sense, because as a parent you don't have to listen to your children and let them tell you what to do, that's just not good parenting at all. The reason I said what I said is because I'm actually Mexican and know the traditions, symbols, and meanings by heart since...Well, it's my culture lol. So I know for a fact that by disrespecting the dead, such as by breaking a promise to your dead mother of never playing music or wanting anything to do with Hector, would (in folkloric terms) have consequences not just on your family honor, pride, and respect, but on your spirit in general.

Yeah, you may be right. Just watching that part reminds me of my grandmother, on my mother's side that sadly passed away, having Alzheimer's; especially at one time she was wondering where did her parents go. I had a strong bond with her and that definitely hit home.... :'(
I was actually just watching coco rn on Disney plus, and realized in the beginning minutes of the movie, coco refers to Miguel as Julio. so I came on to TH-cam to try and figure out if that was an Easter egg, stumbled on this video and lol I guess I was correct. what a cute detail :)
honestly this movie is probs one of the best ive seen in a long time! The fact that Hector was just trying to come home when he was killed i mean i lost it and when coco and miguel were singing together... nO WAY I BAWLED FOR LIKE AND HOUR! Honestly. such a great movie!

Could be that pictures were expensive so only a few were made coco was old as well as her other daughter and husband so it's safe to assume husband died and daughter died before they had money to get pictures back then

It seems they died pretty young due to it being during the era where medical field was pretty lacking so the smallest things took them young, such as the common cold, or even a prick of a nail

All this stuff about Coco and the novelization backstory makes me even madder at Ernesto de la Cruz, because all that pain the Rivera family went through was his fault. >=(
Actually it was partially Imelda’s fault. Her ban on music prevented anyone from noticing that Ernesto was performing Hector’s songs on Hector’s guitar. This would have alerted the family that something wasn’t right and Ernesto wouldn’t have gotten away with it as long as he did. Her own stubbornness let her husbands murderer go unpunished for decades and nearly caused Hector to have a final death right as she learned the grisly truth.
Not only did her husband try to come back to them in life and was willing to throw away fake and fortune for his family but he never stopped trying to come back to them even in death for almost a century. He was only prevented from doing so due to her actions.
You can see the look of horror on her face when she found out what Ernesto had done and that she was the one who helped him get away with it.
