The way I see it, the wizard's gifts did nothing. In the original movie, scarecrow didn't have a brain, yet was the one to come up with all the plans. Tin man had no heart, but was always the first to comfort Dorothy. Lion had no courage, yet always lead the way into danger. They didn't need the gifts, just like Dorothy could have left whenever she wanted.

you know whats strange though like even though the whole point is they had all that stuff (brain , courage , heart , dorothy was home) the whole time .. the lion -at least in the movie cus i havent read the book- doesnt actually show any . anytime he has to do anything he tries to run away from it and the scarecrow and the tin man have to grab him and push him forward . i actually cant think of one brave thing he does in the movie without it being forced upon him

i know i am a year late, but i remember watching this moving as a kid and liking it too, but ONLY because of Marshall Mallow. my silly kid brain was absolutely ENAMORED by the romance between the two and… admittedly gave the movie a little more credit with the chemistry between the two (I’m convinced i made the chemistry up in my head or something). legit i thought the romance between the two was the peak of the movie and watching this over made me realize that there was a lot less there to the whole thing than i remember

What’s weird is that every single sequel of the movie never bothers to actually source from the original book’s successor: Ozma of Oz.

    • @SimonMoon5
      @SimonMoon5 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

Some of them do. It doesn't happen often but sometimes. Also, the second book is actually the Marvelous Land of Oz, not Ozma of Oz (the third book).
There's the Shirley Temple version and also the movie The Wonderful Land of Oz (the Rifftrax version of which is on TH-cam). But it is weird. Another rumored Oz movie (don't know if it happened because I don't keep up with all the Oz stuff) was going to adapt the second novel but with Dorothy as the main character somehow.
Anyway, the third book (Ozma of Oz) was done as a movie called Return to Oz.

I think the main three having the gifts of Oz becoming their character flaws would be an interesting story upon itself. They could learn how to control their newfound gifts or make it so that they're not hurting others.
The Lion is TOO brave and thus it's causing himself and others to get hurt. He needs to learn to be cautious again but not overly cautious like he was.
The Tin Man is overly emotional now or maybe so kind due to his heart that he's become kind of a sensitive doormat and needs to learn how to put his foot down. Or be mean to be nice sometimes.
The Scarecrow is now super smart but maybe he's got that "To be fair you have to have a large IQ to understand Oz" sort of mentality that makes him come off as pretentious. He needs to learn that being smart is fine and so it being proud of it, but boasting and acting like your king because of it is going to make you seem like a jerk.
Dorothy returns to help with the flaws but the Jester, being a Trickster, uses this to his advantage.
"Hey Lion. You're brave and strong, right? Why don't you show it by jumping off that cliff into that small pool of water. Everyone will be impressed."
"Hey Tin Man. My poor soldiers are in need of your good heart and kind nature. Could you take care of them and maybe guide them?"
"Hey Scarecrow. You're so smart, I bet you could become the new ruler of Oz. Turn it into a bustling Utopia? Everyone will LOVE you!"
Maybe he has them turn against Dorothy and when they inevitably do, she feels the need to return home until she realizes that her friends still need her.
In the end, Jester is defeated, the three learn that they can adore their gifts but there is nothing wrong with having the old sides of them still in tact. For Lion, be brave but be cautious still. For Tin Man, be kind but be independent. For Scarecrow, be smart but in be smart in both mind and heart. Dorothy would even learn a lesson in helping others realize their flaws or building them up.
Edit: Over 1000 likes? Thank you all!! Glad you liked it, guys.

The one thing that irks me about this kind of animation (and they still do this today), is that when characters move, the characters all... over-move. The characters either move like they've been smoking crack and drinking gallons of coffee. Even the calm characters can't even turn their head normal. An example of this: Just look at Dorothy when she turns her head and while she's talking here. Her head doesn't just turn. It starts turning.. then her head drops to her chest... then it looks up as high as her chin can go as it goes through the turning arc, like she's swinging her head instead of turning it. NO ONE moves like this. It's an annoying trope to me, and I don't know why. They can't make a single movement without some kind of.. over-movement. I don't know why this bothers me, but it seems to be a trait of almost all 3D animated movies. Characters absolutely cannot speak without swiveling their heads all over the place either. Even Dorothy in this video is like this. It's like they're animated Power Rangers. I would assume that they think that over-moving gives more life to the characters, but to me, it just makes them look more like soul-less robots trying to pretend to be human. It's either that or they think that kids won't watch things without crazy movement all over the damn screen. Like they think kids are toddlers who requite keys jingled in front of their faces constantly.

@@patrickkelmer6290 Not all should die and it's good to try new things and experiment but people should care more about making good content instead of just making something decent or meh and being just cash grabby. I love animation and comedy movies but if I see something that looks more like a cash grab and doesn't give a shit about being good I stay far away from it. I love a lot of the older Disney films but they seem like they just want to cash in on nostalgia now with its multiple sequels nobody cares about and the crappy live action movies. This is something we see a lot though in media that is targeted to children nowadays because they don't feel like they need to try to make something good because their target audience is too young to even notice or care so they make shitty animation with annoying characters while people like Jim Henson, Fred Rogers etc wanted to make something special even if they got tons of cash they still made some of the best content. We need more content like that instead of this. I wish there were more puppet shows and animated shows with a mix of live action that cared about what kids want and money but not just money I think when kids grow up they will appreciate that more

They're described as no bigger than Dorothy's knee, and she tries to take the princess home in her basket. Apparently though they like living in their own little country (surrounded by a wall, yes) because if they ever leave they become stiff and lifeless just like china figures on a mantel.
Also some of them are explicitly described as having been broken and re-glued. Including a clown who's always breaking himself doing acrobatics or something and has been *mended in a hundred places*. So yeah.

Listing a few that I like would be:

14:40 Really that's all on the film writers. In the original book that this movie was based on the plot twist was that the Jester was actually good but was being controlled by the evil spirit of the Wicked Witch of the West sealed inside of the Broom, so when Dorothy broke it he became good again and a friend to them. Changing that whole resolution but still keeping the attempting to befriend part just makes it more confusing with how it's presented in the movie.

When this movie first came out, I recall not being excited about it and not thinking it was going to be good. I recently watched it and, honestly? It's one of my fave films now, helped by the fact I'm in a huge "Oz" phase at the moment.
It's not perfect, sure, but I find the animation beautiful and the characters still enjoyable! It did take me awhile to get used to Scarecrow's (my fave, btw!) more gruffer voice that is different than the softer, more fatherly one Ray Bolger had for him as well as when Bill Fagerbakke voiced him in the 2017 animated series, "Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz" (also having him sound paternal).
But I can understand why most won't like this film, and that's fine! I love your reviews and still found this one hilarious and fun, despite my love for this movie! :D

I'm happy to read the comments and see that many people watched this film when they were children and to this day still have a fondness for it, even though they recognize many of its problems. I'm Brazilian, and if in the United States this film didn't have a good response, here in Brazil I feel like I'm the only one who watched it, I was 6/7 years old when my mother arrived with a copy of the film for me to watch, maybe She bought it because she likes the classic film. I really love this film to this day, my favorite characters are Marshal Mallow and the China Princess (although she doesn't have a name, I nicknamed her Marie, yes, like the queen) she is definitely my comfort character in this film, and I love her music with Marshal, I would like to see more of them in supposed sequel.

Ok but as a kid I loved this movie, mainly because I had an obsession with the eerie feeling I got from all the moments you pointed out as probably scarring children, but also because I had a massive crush on the Scarecrow's new design and that Marshmallow guy. And also possibly the Tinman, he was pretty cool looking. But mainly the Scarecrow and the Marshmallow guy. I also remember not questioning literally anything when I watched this as a kid, so any loopholes in it I just kinda ignored. Except the boat part where they ditched those mice that part always confused me. But still, anything I didn't really look into and just enjoyed all the bright colors and hot characters and creepy unsettling jester antics.

Yeah he doesn't talk about it in this video but the whole thing was a scam. The movie was made by con artists trying to trick people into investing in it. Thats why the budget is so high but the animation is so bad most of it was embezzled. Its a really crazy stories I forget which channel i saw the video on talked about it. But yeah your parents didn't just make a bad dession by change they where victims of someone's get rich quick scheme.
