I really like all the Darksiders games (including 3 and Genesis), but this one is indeed the best by far. The music, the atmosphere, the story, the puzzles, the characters, the voice acting, the loot, and - of course - the art style... it’s all just great. The combat is the only thing that could be a bit better IMO, but it’s still quite fun. Amazing game.
Agreed, I've enjoyed revisiting all the series so far (currently almost finished up with Darksiders 3) but 2 just does everything so damn well it's hard for it not to be my favourite
This is the only game in the series I've played, and I played it so long ago that I barely remember anything, but I do recall having fun with it back in the day. I agree with your sentiment about open-world fatigue. Back in the late 2000's/early 2010's, open-world games still felt so unique and novel, but now that the majority of newly-released games are open-world, the style has almost become a detriment. Lately I've found myself a lot more drawn to the shorter, linear games that don't overstay their welcome. Some of that probably has to do with age as well. When you're young, you have a lot of free time, but a limited amount of funds. Most kids could probably only afford to buy one game during a given month, so it was better to make that game last as long as possible. When you're older, the dynamic becomes inverted: You have a higher amount of funds, but much less free time. If your time is limited, you want that time spent to be as impactful and memorable as possible, you don't want to spend it roaming around doing fetch quests.
You're spot on mate. I'll take a linear or shorter experience 9 times out of 10 now but back in the day you'd play the same games over and over until you could manage to get another one.
Darksiders 1, 2 and 3 are great. Personally 3 is my fav, simply for the combat system. The story was........there. 2 felt too big. But damn, these games are all still so enjoyable to play.
Exploration for me is a big thing for games going to a area to discover a secret dungeon or enemy is tight up my ally not fighting the same mob of enemies in a narrow line for 8 hours
The best thing of the Darksiders series for me is its art style , it will never look old and dated . It still looks great for being a decade old game . Same goes for Borderlands .
@@MayorHairBear Yeah I don't care what anyone says they continue to look amazing. People shit talk Dsrksiders 3 a lot but that game is absolutely beautiful.
Yeah, there's a good reason people buy the art books. The whole design from the start was meant to evoke the feeling of 90s comics, from what I understand. I suppose that's a natural objective since the art director is an accomplished comic artist. He's playing to his strengths and that was a smart move.

Glad you enjoyed the video mate! Highly recommend Genesis so be sure to play it before that video comes out 😂 Darksiders 2 is fantastic though, hard to top
Just starting the video and I wanna say I lived the first video on this series. I think the entire series is criminally underrated. Daeksiders 2 always had and forever will be my favorite Darksiders game but I love and appreciate them all. I've beaten and play DS2 on xbox 360, Xbox One, and recently on switch jumping on here and there.
That's spot on mate and I agree, the series in general is very underrated. Darksiders 2 is still my favourite but the original is fantastic, 3 is a fun game and Genesis whilst so different is also amazing. Enjoy the video my friend and thank you for the support!
Hell yeah. One of my favorite games of all time. I might have never played it if it hadnt been for my brother borrowing this one from a friend, and I just happened to give it a go. Such a gem. GoW 2018 took a lot of elements from Darksiders 2 like how people used to say Darksiders copied or was inspired by original God of War games. The armor pieces, loot, enchantments, arcane special attacks (runic attacks in GoW). Darksiders 2 used those elements to allow people to create different builds which also enabled different builds in GoW 2018 that was using similar elements. GoW 2018 became a great game because of combining the excellent Darksiders 2 systems with it's own polish, excellent writing, story, music and playing off it's own strong points and new things that it created. I will give Darksiders 2 huge credit and inspiration for the masterpiece we got in the form of GoW 2018.
43:00 I can relate so hard to this... nowadays I dont play open world games anymore because of this. There is always a point when the exploring becomes a chore. As i get older that point comes earlier ans earlier...
I played this game a couple of years ago for the first time because it was cheap and I remembered playing the first one back in the day on a friend's house and thought it was cool. And OH MY GOD I could not believe how this game is so overlooked, I knew no one that ever played it. I thought it was one of the best game I've ever played. CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED is the perfect description for it
Nah, this game is solid but it's just a mix of mechanics from a lot of different games, making it nothing special. Again, a solid 7 out of 10. And that's for effort, but not one unique idea.
I’ve got the soundtracks on my playlist. It’s phenomenal! And I love LOTR. What a game! My favorite game period. I’ve even got a whole forearm sleeve of this game
Agree that the story didn't feel as food as 1 where it was a well paced and straight forward story. But as you say this game is more for world and lore building while giving us a story of what Death was up to. I was actually upset about this a bit at first but I grew to love DS2 almost as much as DS1. Willcott as Death is also very close to how perfect O'Brian was for War.
Man, I've replayed the original version and Deathinitive far too many times to count and it makes me so sad that Darksiders 2 doesn't get the love it deserves so much. So thank you for this.
Darksiders 2 with Dragons Dogma are the games I play through almost yearly.. 2 of my favorite games of all times.. only thing I dislike in the possessed weapons are that there is too little variation in their looks so you will be soending most of the game with identical looking scythes while there are so many cool looking models for non possessed scythes..
to me this is the best in the series. Darksiders 2>Darksiders 1>Darksiders Genesis>Darksiders 3. I've played them at least 3 times each, on my 6 playthrough of DS2 now
Great game, a shame the studio died before they found their footing with D2. Honestly, all they needed to do was fix a few blemishes and we'd have a masterpiece of a series; have the dialogue wheel serve a purpose other than exposition (you know character dialogue, expression and interaction), a bit more combat depth (Reaper form should've been incorporated into the picture a bit more, a dodge offset to continue combos after dodging leaning into that Bayonetta influence), puzzles that don't require a text pop-ups in the middle of figuring out said puzzles. It's a great game tho, worth every hr I played both now and then.
That's my favorite game of all time, I've been playing Darksiders 2 since 2014... This game means a lot to me, the game is literally the best of the best to me
I love the Darksiders series. My only problem with 2 was that it felt much less like the Book of Revelations (the reason I was so excited about the first game), and more like Tolkien. Edit: I wrote this comment before finishing the video. I'm happy for you that it's your cup of tea. Everyone has their own taste, it just felt too far away for me.
After playing 1-3, watching and listening to reviews of 2 are always my favorite. It had a “natural” feel to the combat and exploration. One of my favorite games even though I played it many years after it was released. Edit: I think I liked this game so much because I enjoyed Bloodborne the most out of the FromSoft games. Challenging but rewards offense over defense.
I love watching people cover Darksiders 2 because there is so much you can cover and everyone has different highlights. I enjoyed the combat more so here than in 2 which is strange because I prefer Dark Souls over Bloodborne 😂
I discovered the darksiders series during the pandemic. It holds a special place in my heart (especially darksiders 2) for how much it helped me escape reality and explore an amazing world.
This was the first game were I just kept grinding and grinding without even realising hiw many hours I spent this game gas a very special place in my heart forever U just made me think about playing this again
i disagree on the character bit. Darksiders 1 had great main cast but everyone else sort of didnt exist. Here Death actually interracts with the world and helps carry the story. While war was stoic and badass, Death is charismatic and badass.
I agree on that point and look I don't hate the characters here I just think Darksiders 1 focused on quality where as Darksiders 2 has a lot of good characters but not as many great ones if that makes sense
I played this game because my brother had nothing better to play and I ended up loving it. Even 10 years later I remember it and recently bought it for PS5 for $5.99. Still wonderful. AND THE SOUNDTRACK IS STILL EPIC.
this is hands down one of my favorite games ever. back when the darksiders 1 launched i was between than and bayonetta. knowing that bayonetta was weird af game, and darksiders art style reminded me a bit of wow, i went for that instead, and so glad i did!!! now for the ds2, its one of few games i replayed heavily. 4 times initially, then my saves got corrupted (ironic), then another 4. ds2 was exactly what i wanted in a video game!!! imagine my disappointment entering the soulslike darksiders 3 (as you perfectly stated in your latest related video).
Quick question, if the Nephilim were fused with Death when he sacrificed himself and the call summoned him back to life, does that mean the souls of the Nephilim were revived with him?
I have to agree tho. Darksiders 2 is, by far, the BEST game in the Darksiders series, and to me, one of the greatest games of all time, for nailing pretty much EVERY aspect a game with that title should. Absolutely underlooked AND, most of all, revolutionary, and I say this in hindsight.
i felt similar actually. I was a very casual fan of Zelda but i absolutely loved Darksiders 2. i Think Darksiders 2 is a damn masterpiece and one of my favorite games of all time. The funny part is i started Exploring and appreciating Zelda and other similar games more after finishing Darksiders 2. This game was a perfect combination of everything i love in video games and media in general.
Hilariously enough, health kinda stopped being an issue once I got my hands on the Skeletal Axe of Rending and/or sythes that had life steal. Granted I also went looking for stuff that increased my STR and Arcane stats, over all my build was for the longest time built on hitting the enemy to get my health back. This isn't to say that I was perfect at this but it really helped in some of the more challenging fights.
Darksiders II was a great game, but none of the additions to the gameplay loop put it above the first game. Ultimately Darksiders 2 was best, when it was adhering to the mold cut out within the original game, which while not as ambitious as DSII, DS1 was simply a more coherent package.
Your voice and manner of speaking is so much like Shaun's! I kept thinking why is this feeling so familiar until I realized that. Completely different channels, of course, but the voice similarity almost makes me want to ask if you're the same person! Great video btw. Pretty much agree with you on all your points, and I have also just replayed the game after 10 years. Also played the first Darksiders mostly to get a lore update before jumping in to the sequel, which is the one that I really felt like playing. Also enjoyed the first one more than I remembered though.
I find it pretty humorous that they managed to find a way to make Death an actual fun and even sympathetic character towards the end. When I first saw him back during its reveal, I thought it would be all brooding and not really caring towards humanity, but he was. I will say though, while I really like this series it is a bit frustrating that they haven't moved the main plot forward. This takes place during the timeskip of the first game, same thing with 3, and I think Genesis maybe (?). They're all fun games, but I'd like to see the riders meet up for whatever the final confrontation will entail.
I agree, if they're to do another game they need to finally expand on the aftermath of the original. 4 games and none of them have done that yet is a bit ridiculous
@@MayorHairBear It's suffering from Metroid syndrome, where they'll release new games but never progress the actual story. Although, Dread did do just that. Still, I'd like to see all the horsemen together in one game where you can swap between them on one big epic adventure to revive humanity.
@@AshXXMayftwI think Genesis sets that up really despite being a prequel. Now they just need to make it 4 horsemen instead of 2 and see how they can implement that into a more 3d space
im so happy i picked this game up for my 360 its absolute insane it reminds me of one game i use to play but i dont know what it was but i love this game it was so cheap but so fun
This game is very good!! I find it hilarious though how this is one of your favorite games but you can't play all of it. You are a great reviewer mate.
I love this game truly but I also love games like New Vegas as well. That doesn't mean I do everything I possibly can each time I replay a game or that it interests me the same everytime but that doesn't mean I don't still love the game 😂
Darksiders 2 was really good but they strayed so far into generic fantasy characters vs the more mythological characters form the first game. Everything but the story was better in part 2 and the voice actor for Death was AMAZING
I don't know about the characters... they do indeed tend to be less bombastic and extreme, but that's because they're supposed to be more endearing and accentuate Death's kindness and opposed to War's bluntness. We still have memorable characters. Like Oran that sees through your facade. Karn that keeps asking you for favors until you start liking him and helps you in provider dungeon. The Crowfather. The Lord of Bones who yanks your chain and keeps reminding you how you are beneath him. And let's not forget about the Chancellor, who might be the most entertaining interaction in the game, especially if you complete the Soul Arbiter's Maze. He is a politician to the core. He doesn't have much power, but what little power he has, he uses with great efficiency to frustrate Death. I do wish Vulgrim would have had a role in the story though. After Death, he is my favorite character. And yes, I'm watching your video again because I thirst for Darksiders 2 that much.
I definitely get your point and I completely agree their purpose is so different from Wars relationship with his ensemble. I just loved that relationship more I think even though the dialogue and relationships war builds with these characters is much greater. Also, glad the video is so good it can be watched over and over 😂
39:25 One point I do see a lot of people make about the game's platforming is that the wall running and such can be hard to get a feel for and tough to control properly, but like... Idk, maybe it's just me, but even when I first picked this up and hadn't beaten it like fifteen times yet, I don't recall struggling with it for more than the first hour or so of play. Once I understood the controls and visual cues, it just felt natural to me. Very rarely did I ever have an issue with Death not doing the thing I told him to do. Unlike the Charred Council AYOOO
I honestly think this is the best structure for a game i have ever played. Devil may cry combat, Diablo style loot, sort of open world, platforming, rpg elements. It is not fully realized but it is a great concept. The lore and world itself are the weakest aspect and the reason it never really caught on.
@@MayorHairBear I guess it's the trouble with doing video game essays, you'll always have someone saying there's this or that game you should play. Haha. I like your videos, man. Keep up the great work!
@@deckard3755 Thank you mate, glad you're enjoying the videos! Always happy to get recommendations, Shadow of the Colossus is a game I know I should play I just need to find the time!
@@MayorHairBear Well, if you want a recommendation... I'd say Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice. I think it's a really unique game and doesn't get anywhere near the praise it should.
I actually Got Darksiders 1 2 and 3 in one. Definitely found Darksiders 1 so slow and it peed me off and gave up quite soon in. The camera is bloody annoying in all three games
One think DSII had better than all the others is the ATMOSPHERE. This game just yeets you into such a well-designed world with a fantastic soundtrack by Jesper Kyd that more than often had me stopping dead in my tracks to listen to the background music. In fact, the theme for the Dead Plains, with that mix of synth and cello inspired me to pursue learning the later instrument.
I agree too many open word games kill the joy of even the good games of the type of genre. But this game dlc demon lord belial...yo play it. It's awesome and changes gamplay a bit more. overall great video!
@@MayorHairBear I was a bit too when I just recently played it. Love to see other opinions on a amazing game. I recommend maybe you should look at a playthrough if you need some interest. I think is really cool. No need to do a video on it or whatever but it's cool. Looking forward to the next video boss! Keep up the boss work.
I understand some of your late video criticisms for sure. I believe you need to play the other dlc. I think the game is one of the better open world games of its time for sure. Death is my favorite horseman and he always reminded me of Raziel from Soul Rever. The artstyle is peak Darksiders in my opinion. I plan on eventually covering the series myself eventually.
Super interesting to hear your opinion on it. I played the first game and it was kinda meh. Then I played this one and finished it and it made me drop the series as a whole. Growing up with GoW too, I always prefered it over Darksiders. The open world I think really was teh cherry on top to make me never play a game of the series again. It felt so tedious. What's more I really hate this Diablo style alsways new gear with new stats kind of loot system. It's the reason I don't like Nioh nearly as much as the From games. Cool video, really interesting to see what you enjoy about it so much.
I think u did not understand and i dont blame u because at first i didn't as well but the jamarah boss fight is not a direct head on boss fight. In order to make him vulnerable u need to redirect his attack towards himself using those portal plates all around the arena.
To be fair the role of Lilith isn't a positive one on war. Where with Samiel is actively trying to help war for for Essentially selfless reasons. If anyone is to fit the role of Samiel that probably be closer to crow father. Also Samiel is literally going easy on death that's why hes not made harder he wants death to succeed.
The biggest thing that keeps killing my interest in Darkisders 2 is the dungeon design. At a certain point in more than one dungeon, if you missed a chest, you can't go back to it. It's not a question of getting an item to unlock access to it later. You just simply missed it and can't go back for it. Because of this, I'm constantly paranoid about getting every single chest in dungeons as I go through them because if I don't, there's a chance I won't be able to get them later. This, added to the size and scope of the game, has killed my interest in playing the game several times. I keep going back to it over the years pushing a little further each time, mostly because I love the first game and the lore behind the series fascinates me so much, but the game itself feels like a chore to get through.
I loved the game even if I haven't played recently. If I have a nitpick is that you couldn't change the gear look because personally the best looking gear in the game is the middle tier.
It's such a weird thing how the first 2 games are different but good. Like the first game pulled me in with it's characters and writing. It felt like, playing a Soul Reaver game with all the style and flair. But then all of that was missing in Darksiders 2 but instead the world was fun to explore and the world had character. I think I still like the first better.
Its funny how many people belittled this masterpiece, y’all really slept on it!
Slept on and missed out on a true gem!
Wait! You could go TEN freaggin' years without replaying this game? I can't go more than half a year before returning to it and recompleting it.

CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED is the perfect description for it
It is a real shame how many people overlook this game but I'm glad you finally checked it out mate!
It's like if we put together Zelda Breath of the Wild with God of War and a bit of Devil May Cry.
Nah, this game is solid but it's just a mix of mechanics from a lot of different games, making it nothing special. Again, a solid 7 out of 10. And that's for effort, but not one unique idea.
I always loved that "fight" with Samael.
It's a bad ass encounter, just not the most challenging which is perfectly fine!
I’ve got the soundtracks on my playlist. It’s phenomenal! And I love LOTR. What a game! My favorite game period. I’ve even got a whole forearm sleeve of this game
Reading the comments you're the only person to note the soundtrack, I bought it too on import.
Highly anticipated, sir!
I've played them at least 3 times each, on my 6 playthrough of DS2 now
My exact rankings!
Darksiders 2 is one of my most favorite games of all time. I still play this masterpiece.
The graphics, animations and little touches / attention to details are just great
That's my favorite game of all time, I've been playing Darksiders 2 since 2014...
I tried picking this back up in 2023, and I can't. I beat the first Darksiders, and somehow Darksiders 2 just didn't hit the same.
Yesssss, it's finally here!!
I hope it was worth the wait!
This was the first game were I just kept grinding and grinding without even realising hiw many hours I spent this game gas a very special place in my heart forever
U just made me think about playing this again
i disagree on the character bit.
What? I got a different ending! Lilith was scolded and Lucifer allowed her to leave. You telling me there's more than one ending?
this is hands down one of my favorite games ever. back when the darksiders 1 launched i was between than and bayonetta. knowing that bayonetta was weird af game, and darksiders art style reminded me a bit of wow, i went for that instead, and so glad i did!!! now for the ds2, its one of few games i replayed heavily. 4 times initially, then my saves got corrupted (ironic), then another 4. ds2 was exactly what i wanted in a video game!!! imagine my disappointment entering the soulslike darksiders 3 (as you perfectly stated in your latest related video).
DS2 is a special, special game mate and whilst I may not get to revisit it as much as I would like there is no denying its excellence!
I was never a big Zelda fan but absolutely loved Darksiders 2 and Okami even though Zelda paved the way for these memorable games.
I'm the exact same way and I'm so glad you included Okami! Absolutely couldn't care less about Zelda personally but love the games it helped create
i felt similar actually.
There is a block & parry. It's the buckler's hold attack.
i replayed the game for the first time like a week back and gotta say, this man speaks my heart
It's a great time to this day isn't it!
@@MayorHairBear it is indeed!
Dont know how i missed this!! Well looks like I know what im doing after work today 😎😎😎
Hell yeah! 🔥
Absolute masterpiece!
This game's graphic ages like wine and so it's gameplay. I love it
Graphically still incredible!
Also, glad the video is so good it can be watched over and over 😂
what a leggendary player.
i remember playng this game with my mum, she love this game too
Ty for posting... Sometimes masterpieces go under the radar.
Been playing darksiders 2 and I love it so much ❤❤❤
It's amazing isn't it!
@@MayorHairBear Yeah! I played back in 2012 and I'm on new game plus right now. I'm currently watching your darksiders 3 video and I'm a fan👍
@@Mojavekight17 thank you mate, glad you're enjoying the videos!
@@MayorHairBear I'm getting darksiders 3 thanks to your work 👍
You can pick up Darksiders Fury Collection for 6 bucks on the Playstation store right now.
Well worth it, I think they had a similar deal like that for new years when I picked the games up again!
Watched the whole thing good stuff , just a suggestion if you can do 4k do it , your vids will age better just like Darksiders 2
I honestly think this is the best structure for a game i have ever played. Devil may cry combat, Diablo style loot, sort of open world, platforming, rpg elements. It is not fully realized but it is a great concept. The lore and world itself are the weakest aspect and the reason it never really caught on.
"Though not having played it, this has Shadow of the collosus vibes for me." You should really rememdy that.
I know, I will remedy that issue soon 😂
@@deckard3755 already have a video on it my friend! Incredible game, one of my personal favourites 🙌
Hell yeah. Darksiders 2 is a really, really good game.
Ever thought about doing a review video on,
Batman Begins the video game. It was a huge part of my early teen years of gaming.
I have thought about covering a few movie tie ins down the track. So the answer is yes, it's just a question of when!
Jugué éste juego más veces de las que quisiera, el diseño de muerte y el combate es tan adictivo. Gran juego y gran vídeo
The atmosphere in DS2 is impeccable, truly amazing!
I came to this game late as in about a year ago and what a gem ,stunningly beautiful!
The music of this game 🥰
Absolutely incredible!
I agree too many open word games kill the joy of even the good games of the type of genre. But this game dlc demon lord belial...yo play it. It's awesome and changes gamplay a bit more. overall great video!
I had a feeling I should of played Belial. I was just so burnt out by that point though unfortunately. Glad you enjoyed the video!
@@graytoast6139 I definitely need to look into it because the name alone sounds awesome. Thank you for the support mate!
@@MayorHairBear shoot your welcome boss!
Yeah I can definitely see where you're coming from, the series isn't for everyone but I'm glad you enjoyed the video nonetheless!
This game is a sertifide hood classic 👌
This is the gameplay that Kingdoms of Amalur 2 needs
Gosh, Kingdoms of Amalur takes me back 😂
I think u did not understand and i dont blame u because at first i didn't as well but the jamarah boss fight is not a direct head on boss fight.
For me, it's that and the fact everyone asks you to do fetch quests.
I have all of them. DS2 is in my top 5 of best games made. I replay DS2 at least once a year. The sound track is awesome.
Dude....I love you. Same exact feelings for this fucking gem. Subscribed.
Thank you so much mate, welcome to the channel!
Just found this channel and loved this video. I subbed immediately.
Hell yeah mate, welcome to the channel!
@@MayorHairBear Thank you!! Happy to be here!
Darksiders did what Todd McFarlane deserved and it failed because it wasn't a SPAWN trilogy
I loved the game even if I haven't played recently. If I have a nitpick is that you couldn't change the gear look because personally the best looking gear in the game is the middle tier.
Yeah that's the tricky thing with some loot systems, gotta have the style 😎
it aches my heart that I had to be the 667th like of this video however, I couldn't not like such a thorough analysis
You are forgiven my friend 😂
It's such a weird thing how the first 2 games are different but good. Like the first game pulled me in with it's characters and writing. It felt like, playing a Soul Reaver game with all the style and flair. But then all of that was missing in Darksiders 2 but instead the world was fun to explore and the world had character. I think I still like the first better.
i remember seeing this game as a kid and wanting to play it soo bad but not being able to afford it
One of my favorite games… If I had to pick 1 game it might be it
It’s awesome now on PS5. 60FPS goodness with a free update!!
Love the complete series, can't wait till Strife is comming.
Then, hopefully, a game similar to Genesis with all 4 horsemen.
I enjoyed this game a lot, especially the QoL improvements and gameplay, but liked the story & characters of original much more.
I had both of these games darksiders and darksiders 2. Sad part is I've gotten farther with death than I do with War still stuck on defeating Tiamat.
this game is about to be 10 years old.
Crazy isn't it! 👀
Good luck finding any writing as good as this in video games today.
This is NO PLACE FOR A HORSE!!
Cool video! One of my fav games ever and Ive been playing games since the 90s. First was good, second was great, third was below mediocre!
Glad you enjoyed the video mate!
