@vikdaprod people who don’t enjoy trying to decipher the meaning of a 13th century poem. I’ve tried reading the divine comedy multiple times and it’s dense.
This game made me collect myself as a man and encouraged me to get myself together internally. The lengths this man went to in order to right his wrongs and save his wife's soul, even without believing he'd save his own, is inspirational.
I'm not as religious as I used to be, but when I saw my first playthrough of this game god damn did the depictions of the circles of Hell scare me. I think this game actually feels a lot more unique now than it did when it was released strictly because there have been so few hack-and-slash games released during this generation. It kind of reminds me of old movie genres like Film Noirs and Spaghetti Westerns where they released a ton of them during their era, but then they largely stopped making them, giving them a distinctive quality in retrospect. I hate to sound like one of those fuddy duddy "things were better back in my day" types, but the 2007-2013 era of video games was the best time for cutting-edge, innovative stories. Look at the stuff EA was publishing back then. Dante's Inferno, Dead Space, Alice: Madness Returns, Mass Effect, and Shadows of the Damned (which was largely changed from its original concept, but still pretty fun). Then look at the unoriginal garbage they've been publishing since then. Pretty depressing to think about.
I generally agree in terms of AAA games, but I feel that a lot of the more experimental writing can still be found in smaller titles, or even hidden in the corners of bigger bloated games.
It was also the era that moved away from gameplay-centric titles, focusing instead on-like you said-the story, as well as cutscenes and empty open worlds. So even at this time I sounded like you, saying that games used to be much more engaging. But I’d agree that games (and media in general) have been even worse in the last decade, especially in terms of high concepts or anything controversial. Part of it is likely just us not being impressionable teens and preteens anymore, but it’s easy to notice the gaming trend toward streamlined, safe, repetitive formulae that focus on vapid open worlds, checklists, politically correct characters, and other uninspired fodder gameplay elements.
I mean, I agree with what you’re saying to an extent, but let’s not pretend that that was like the greatest era of gaming or anything. 2007-2012 saw a lot of games homogenizing, genres die out, and a greater push to capitalize on popular western trends like Call of Duty and Gears of War. It also marked a significant decrease in challenging gameplay experiences and a huge increase of cinematic blockbuster type games (not that these are inherently bad, but the industry was saturated at that point) Don’t get me wrong, countless amazing titles released during the 7th Gen, but honestly it might have been one of the worst eras for gaming culturally. It was a period where even most of the great Japanese companies were moving to dumbed down, unoriginal blockbusters to appeal to the growing western mass market and chase that CoD and GoW money. If anything, I think these past few generations have been much better for gaming. TL:DR that era of gaming (the 7th Gen) was saturated by a slew of unoriginal schlock and while it had plenty of unique and fantastic titles, it was in no way significantly better than the industry today and may have actually been worse (in my opinion). I think you’re letting nostalgia cloud you, and I recommend searching for the countless amazing games that have released in the last few years.
Good analogy about the film noirs and spaghetti westerns. Especially with the return of God of War turning into a closer perspective and deeper story than they were before. The hack and slash games of the older games are fewer and farther in between nowadays.
Being born & raised a Christian, eventually backsliding, & now on my way back, I can solidly say that even if it wasn't biblically accurate, this game TERRIFIED ME & is probably one of the many reasons I find myself today, once again, a devout Christian.
Already saw MrHammers' thoughts on Dante's Inferno but wanted to see another person's on the game. It's a highly underrated game that got pushed aside because "it was copying from another video game" rather than just taking inspirations from said other game. Sad that will not get a sequel and we will not see our beautiful wife Beatrice.
The game holds up perfectly fine today. I know it's playable on Xbox but I don't know if it is elsewhere. It's one of my favorite games of all time. Its basically a masterpiece. EA shut down visceral who made it, and I don't think EA would have any of their studios to make anything like it again because they don't make games like this anymore. It is technically very much a God of War like. The story, setting, and atmosphere just sets it apart.
@@slothprizon66 wait, visceral? The same that made the original Dead Space? Damn... By the way. If you like these games, check the trailer for The Callisto Protocol. It's from the same creators. Support talent!
This is easily my favorite out of that era of hack and slash games. It feels like it takes the best of each game in the genre and just applies a badass aesthetic to it. The scythe as a main weapon, the ability to make choices in real time to absolve or punish enemies and characters, etc. All come together to create a good time.
38:52 God damn, I forgot how good the backdrops looked. And it sucks that we only get about three or four of those in the whole game. It's looking at those vast, endless vistas of a place created for and of eternal torment, that's when I personally felt the most "in Hell." I swear, a ground-up remake of this game with just a little more focus on that would make me drool.
As someone who is religious and read the divine comedy I would love a sequel of Dante going through purgatory and paradise I loved how this game made one of my favorite epics into a bad ass game about redemption, condemnation and just pure wholesome slaughter of devils
I hate it when people refer to hack and slash games as God of War clones. Everything is God of War for these people. Dante's Inferno is a God of War clone, Darksiders is a God of War clone, Castlevania Lords of Shadow is a God of War clone. Why does everything with melee combat have to be compared to God of War? At some point, even Devil May Cry was compared to God of War, though it has since gained its own notoriety.
Fun fact the creator of God of war David Jaffe got drunk at the playboy mansion after winning game of the year and he apperently was ranting about dmc 3 deserved the award since his game was just a shallow rip off of the first game and it used money to make it appealing, style over substance basically Also dmc 3 is a major mechanical upgrade over 1 so when compared to the god of war games it is vastly superior as far as game depth is concerned
@@MayorHairBear It's because thinking is hard for the average consumer. I also blame the 2 decades of IGN style reviews where they have to compare a game to the standard they like. Like if it's a hack n slash, it's compared to God of War, point n click, it's compared to Monkey Island, if it's a platformer, it's compared to Mario. Comparing is fine for reference, but to say something is a clone, insults the 100s to 1000s of people who work on the game.
@@NobleAbsinthe Very well said and I agree, comparison is a great tool to give reference to how certain mechanics work as it helps the viewer or reader know sort of instantly what that mechanic feels like. But then you throw around the words clone or copy and it's just as you said disrespectful
Well the reason is because games get compared to other games is because the Original creations are amazing and some of the best in the genre so , I don’t look at is a a negative, if it’s compared to god of war and devil may cry, it’s a win win
A thing that genuinly blew me away by this game as a kid was its music, like the music for this game is god tier (pardon the pun) and I was amazed it didn't get as much recognition when it came out.
It really is a great game. I remember fighting Dante’s father I died so many times but refused to give up. If it wasn’t for a health increase slot that I just so happened to have enough money saved up to get during the fight and using the the rage meter to go for broke in the final leg of the fight don’t think I would have beat him. And the final boss I specifically saved a health and a mana increase slot for the final fight used both of them up on the first stage thinking might as well use them now only to find out it was a multi stage boss. What a fight it was.
There was quite a few bosses here I remember really struggling with back in the day (The Cerberus and Alighiero kicked my ass) But revisiting the game today, whilst they weren't too difficult they were all really a great time to battle
My points on Dante is that people hated it on it because it was too soon from GoW releases (market saturation) I also thought that they should have stuck more to the source material and focus less on the gameplay - I know, which is crazy for game development; but I feel it actually hurt the game since it felt like it lacked personality. I would also have preferred longer durations for the Circles some of them were ridiculously short. Enemy variety does grind considering all the myriad of demons you could be fighting not just the ones endemic to their particular circle. Weapon variety is not an issue, some adventure is about arsenal other times the weapons are more personal or iconic. A parallel is the Belmont whip/chain and their side arm of choice in the Castlevania series. The magic are actually the weapons you are looking for, it was probably best for them to label them as abilities rather than spells; if you know what I mean. Moreover, I feel a lot of your points you mentioned are less relevant in higher difficulties, for example the absolutions are actually the real upgrade progression due to the exp bonus if you do perfect or semi perfect absolutions. Purchasing combos through the regular combat is rather quite difficult. Yes, I agree a more thematical reward from saving damned souls would be cool. As for, the combat absolutions, I also agree they do break combat pacing GoW has three grab kill for critter tier mobs- the exp bonus, the kill/high damage, or the combat pacing kill. In GoW the grab where Kratos throws critter tiers towards the other mobs or uses them as battering rams are good for the pacing issue. Although, for high difficulty to those short Quick Times provided very need i-frames to escape lethal damage or when low on health. Lastly, due to the nature of the final fight with Lucifer; cross builds are better over scythe builds; and most players feel like you, about the magic choices. However, maxing out Sins of The Father and Martyrdom turns the Lucifer fight into a triviality or they are must haves at top difficulty. (Yes, Lucifer phase 1 and 3 are utter bs at highest difficulty) The game rewards creative use of what seems are very lame or low utility abilities over the big flashy moves.
I played DI a few months ago for the first time (retro phase), seriously, this is one of the smoothest games when it comes to gameplay and combat I have ever played
@@MayorHairBear I was seriously amazed when I started playing it! I am playing Nier: Automata now, and Nier is a good game, not gonna question that, but seriously, controlling and fighting with Dante feels so much better..
What a great setting for a game, though the poet Dante is not exactly a good fit for a hack and slash though of course EA executives just ask "what's popular now?". This Dante is closer to Kratos and basically the opposite of the sorrowful thoughtful protagonist of the Divine Comedy. I still can't believe they tried that, just as when I first saw the newspaper article announcing the game (first time seeing a video game in Italian news). I had forgotten about that until youtube recommended to me Mr.Hammers video, glad to have found you guys and glad to see a more in-depth look at this high-budget weirdness! (note about Italian pronunciation: the 'e' is always read as in 'red')
Oh it is a completely different tone from the original work and whilst Dante's story is obviously much different stylistically I think it was a call that makes sense if you know the game is just taking bits and pieces from the source material but still doing it's own thing. Happy to have you apart of the community mate and glad you're enjoying the videos and I'll make a note about the pronunciations for the future thank you!
The interesting thing about Dante's description of Christianity and Hell is he takes so much from so many mythology's to almost create his own thing which is really interesting.
@@MayorHairBearDante actually wanted to show how christianity was censoring all knowledge of past cultures as sinful and damned. That's why when you read the Divine Comedy you can actually tell a lot of small details: 1. The Inferno is built as huge amphitheater, emulating the roman coliseum. 2. You can see a lot, and I mean, A LOT of mythological characters from other cultures doing their part in Hell. Like Charon, Phlegyas and Minos. Also, real world characters known to Dante like Cleopatra, Marcus Antonius, Farinata and his own father, burning in the ethernal flames for their sins. Dante was sending a message to uncover religious censorship and the Church thinked it was all real shit instead, LoL.
We really need more games based on the Christian mythology, imagine if God of War went to this mythology. I loved playing through this years ago. Hope they do a reboot and start fresh
I like the "It's a lazy rip-off" argument. Especially when it's a "rip-off" of an inherently good idea. They'll praise a game for the hard work and ingenuity, then when someone else puts in that same hard work to emulate the ingenuity, they're called lazy. Amazing.
Oh games that should have had sequels is a great topic and I agree, this game comes to mind instantly! Thank you so much mate, stoked you enjoyed the video!
I remember playing this game and wondering why it didn't have a bigger audience at the time. Incredibly captivating dark fantasy story, awesome art direction, fun gameplay, and just an overall polished game. I do hope we see a remaster or a spirital successor some time in the future. Great video!
Many games that left an impact on history (Mario, Castlevania SotN, SF, GoW, RE4, DS, CS to name a few) end up spawning "clone children". Is just how art works: you try to imitate what you love and that leads to competition, that leads to improvement and inovation. To see titles like Dante's Inferno or Darksiders, kinda remind me of how things still are with Souls-""clones"" or were with RE ""clones"".
man I loved this game on my first playthrough even more so now. plus knowing who the concept artist is gives me inspiration when doing sketches. I recommend trying Castlevania Lords of Shadow trilogy (I,II, and Mirror of Fate) since the story it tells is right up your alley.
@@MayorHairBear ohhh, hell yeah. I hope you have a blast playing through it once you have the time. Only thing that bugged me when reading discussions about Lords of Shadow is the comparison to God of War, when in reality Lament of Innocence predates the 1st GoW game and for me the gameplay is more so based on the latter and Curse of Darkness mixed in with Shadow of the Colossus
The story was gold, and the gameplay was awesome. One of the few early games where I would pay attention to the stories of damned souls. I even remember watching the movie
Dante's Inferno was so underrated. I discovered be stunning art of Wayne Barlowe thanks to it. You are 100% right that it was a great move to include him in the creative process. I have the great privilege to be able to speak to him easily (he follows my work on IG and is very friendly to reply), so one of the first things I told him was how big an influence this game has on my art career. He also mentioned being saddened by the fact the game didn't do better as he enjoyed making art for it.
I loved this game. I made a whole new Xbox live account around this game to get all the dlc and picture packs back in the day. Was very disappointed when it didn’t get a sequel
Great job as always my man.. the scenery in this game was very effective and even though the studio who made the game was shut down I wish we had a sequel on this good game.
Thank you so much mate, glad you enjoyed the video! Agreed, Visceral Games did an incredible job at creating Hell and at this point, I'd love to see another studio give this game the remake treatment and then continue on with Purgatory and Paradise!
A little off topic The movie “As above so below” Has a real cool hell reference! When they found the actual entrance to hell it was just a tight little tunnel so they had to get on their knees and then on their bellies to squeeze through! Once they got in the tunnel they looked at each other and made some quote from Dante’s Inferno You will enter hell like a serpent on your belly!! Or something like that I completely mangled it hopefully you know what I mean!
Crazy your video pops up when I'm doing a livestream playthrough on my channel - appreciate the love you gave for it because it needs it. Hopefully we get a sequel down the line or something.
An artistic masterpiece, a great playthtough, I love the journey through hell and intensity Dante portrays through his screams and shouts. Only thing that was lacking was the misrepresentation of the madness he experienced by journeying his personal Hell, like the anime did beautifully.
I told my best friends mom at the time to buy me devil may cry. But I forgot the name only remember the word Dante as he man’s name. She got me this game. I knew this wasn’t what I wanted but I played it anyway. And holy shit. Me being as young as I was playing a gem like this? Sure I was incredibly young but bro this game was Fucking amazing
I think the setting is easily one of the most well realised in gaming history, I loved going through the game and experiencing hell. Sadly the ganeplay is nothing to write home about, which is why I don't hold the game in as high a regard as you do. Although I'm glad we share the same opinion that it being a copy/ripoff is absolutely not a bad thing, if anything, I want more Devil May Cry/God of War games. Great video as always, you're great at this.
Thank you mate, I'm glad you enjoyed the video (one of my personal favourites!) Absolutely understand where some could find this game downfalls but you're spot on, more DMC, GOW is not a bad thing
This was one of my favorite action games from that era. I really loved the atmosphere of the game and I found the combat really enjoyable. Another action game from that era I would recommend is Heavenly Sword which is my personal favorite Ninja Theory game. Unfortunately similarly to Dante's Inferno it got hit with the "GOW clone" label at the time, but I really enjoyed the combat, main character, and Chinese inspired setting.
Damn nostalgia hitting hard, and I mean I played this game on PSP hard, the story when I was a kid was cool, as an adult I just appreciate how they made each circle and environment feel like the sin it's supposed to represent. Such an underappreciated gem o7
Not gonna lie that Super Bowl commercial is one of the reasons why I bought the game. It was a cool commercial and I liked the premise of the game and what it was based on but that commercial was badass.
I had no idea that this game existed. I was just looking around the bargain bin at *Gamestop* several years ago and picked this up. I've seen it many times before but, I wasn't interested in it at the time. I purchased it, got home, unwrapped it, popped it in and never regretted buying it. If you immerse yourself in the game become Dante makes it really fun to play. The unbaptised babies in HELL were creepy and disturbing to see with their annoying crying and bladed extremities. The destruction of the giant chains of Judecca was a nice touch I didn't expect it would free Lucifer. So that explains why I keep hearing laughter everytime I broke a chain. Dante's Infernal is a very underappreciated game would like to see it make an appearance on next-gen consoles and a remake of *The Legacy of Kain* series on next-gen consoles it's been a long time coming. Not just one or two titles the whole series from the beginnings of Kain's bloody backstory to the betrayal and rebirth of Raziel. Then begin a new storyline with a new character or known characters that's apart of the mythos maybe both then bring it all together full circle. I wish the scythe had a *Scorpion* from *Mortal Kombat* attack mechanic "GET OVER HERE!!!*
Was so excited for this to come out I must have played through it a dozen times in middle school. I really never got into dmc or other hack slashes one of my all time favs for sure
I just finished this game a couple weeks ago , super underrated game , I enjoyed most of it and I had a blast , also great analysis as always but I wished you ve talked about the soundtrack , it is pretty impressive
The soundtrack is incredible but unfortunately for me, it was only something I noticed when editing and using it for background noise. I do need to start paying closer attention though and will try and include soundtracks more in future retrospectives! Glad you enjoyed the video and game though mate
truly great video dude! really enjoyed this and it reminded of just how great this game was. It was visually stunning, awesome sound, had great gameplay and a great story. Makes me sad that they never worked on a sequel. Surely it deserves a remaster on current gen consoles
Oh my god this title speaks SO much volume because it’s true. Because Dante’s Inferno is an under appreciated Gem just like Bioshock 2 and just like Splatterhouse. Sure it’s as similar to some of the hack and slash greats. To me at the time this game stood out on its own because of the aesthetic feel of the game and setting…I never looked at it as a clone or copy. I just loved it from beginning to End…Dante himself has one of the coolest Scythe designs I’ve ever seen in Media that I almost felt you could put it into an anime. This is one of my favorite games and I appreciate this video Dude. One last good time before I’m gone for half a year. Also hey! You like Indimouse haha, small world Eh? Bro I can’t believe I found a video talking about how good this game was. This was a game a played on launch and was to young to fully understand everything but had a blast with it nonetheless! This is something I came back to and played a bunch and absolutely loved it after fully understanding it. This is definitely a underrated game and as I am a GOW fan, I do see the similarities but they didn’t try to hide the fact that it was similar ya know. They didn’t try to outright copy it. Great vid!
One of the absolute best experiences was picking up this game randomly I’ve heard of the poem, but once I saw this I was hooked I instantly platinum it then did I bought the DLC. I am a huge fan and I think they need to bring it back.
Played this as a young kid before abandoning it for god of war. Recently between the loss of a personal friend from suicide and my own depressive thoughts and struggles I was drawn back to the game. Someone also commented that it made them collect themselves and what to do better. As an adult this game feels very personal and genuine strikes and emotion in me I have not felt since last gen gaming.
I'm playing again on the hardest difficulty and it's a challenge. I enjoy. My only complaint is the last 2 or three circles arent as detailed, but everything else is cool. 👌
Yo, I played Dante's Inferno at least 15 times. That, Dead Space 2, and Castlevania Lords of Shadow over and over again as a kid. I'm glad to see Dante's getting some much needed love, especially after that ending.
I recently got this game for the PS3 for trophies and as a way too fill my collection. This game was a lot of fun and needs too come back in some way for the modern era
I read Dante's Inferno in high school, and I've been all about ever since. I bought the game on PS3 when it came out. I even paid for the special edition. I even bought the animated movie
The marketing is truly the most impressive. I wish more established IPS’s received as much physical media/content/treasures as Dante’s Inferno. One can only hope.
I’m sure you get this a lot, but I’m genuinely confused that you don’t have at least 500k subs. People are far less entertaining and put out less consistent work within the video game analysis/essay space comparatively, and I know one day, while I’m sure you’re content with the success you’ve had already, you’ll reach greater heights. Thank you for the hours of enjoyment I’ve had so far, my friend.
Thank you so much mate, that really does mean a lot to me. I'm just glad the people who are watching are enjoying the content, the growth will come through that!
would have liked to see a sequel, but idk how well they could have done it with purgatory and heaven one of the main points is that the higher you go, the less suffering and violence exists
I think a sequel is possible and you're right the further you go should equal less violence but they messed with the source material enough once it could have worked I think, at least in purgatory
Great video, a real trip down memory lane. I thought that the gameplay was similar to GoW but as you said it is a solid hack and slash game and it got unfairly hammered for being too similar.
Im playing it on my psp emulator and was really into the game, it's sad that this game was discontinued, I heard they were gonna make "Dante's: redemption"
What's your thoughts on Castlevania: Lords of Shadow? if you played it? It is also "God of War clone" with Christian mythology, and is also very underrated, i think it's deserves more recognition.
@@MayorHairBear If you'll ever have enough time, you should try them again, at least first one. Like with Dante's Inferno its a bit too limited with weapons, has a fixed camera and qte issues, but the atmosphere, solid core gameplay, and good story makes up for it's shortcomings.

Nobody gets genuine confusion in "I don't understand" like him
Wasn't it Mark Hamill
*I just looked it up and it appears that he was, no wonder it was good we got the joker/ Luke Skywalker himself
@@mysteryneophyte nah, the voice actor for Dante was Graham McTavish.
@@mysteryneophytemark Hamil played Aleghero I believe
Being born & raised a Christian, eventually backsliding, & now on my way back, I can solidly say that even if it wasn't biblically accurate, this game TERRIFIED ME & is probably one of the many reasons I find myself today, once again, a devout Christian.
I can definitely see where you're coming from, this is a brutal depiction of hell!
imagine being motivated by fear to worship a kayak on a stick
Already saw MrHammers' thoughts on Dante's Inferno but wanted to see another person's on the game. It's a highly underrated game that got pushed aside because "it was copying from another video game" rather than just taking inspirations from said other game. Sad that will not get a sequel and we will not see our beautiful wife Beatrice.
Well said mate, couldn't agree more and it is sad that we'll never see where this series would go with Purgatory and Paradise
This game looks incredible! Cant believe I never known about it until now. Hopefully it gets a remake someday
No problems at all mate, happy to introduce new games to people and hopefully someday we can see this game get revisited and remastered!
This is fun even in the highest difficulty. Recommend!
@@slothprizon66 wait, visceral? The same that made the original Dead Space? Damn...
By the way. If you like these games, check the trailer for The Callisto Protocol. It's from the same creators. Support talent!
@@rumplstiltztinkerstein yes, the same people who made Dead Space.
The environment was dark, the story was grim, wow what a game
This is easily my favorite out of that era of hack and slash games. It feels like it takes the best of each game in the genre and just applies a badass aesthetic to it. The scythe as a main weapon, the ability to make choices in real time to absolve or punish enemies and characters, etc. All come together to create a good time.
38:52
God damn, I forgot how good the backdrops looked.
And it sucks that we only get about three or four of those in the whole game.
It's looking at those vast, endless vistas of a place created for and of eternal torment, that's when I personally felt the most "in Hell."
I swear, a ground-up remake of this game with just a little more focus on that would make me drool.
As someone who is religious and read the divine comedy I would love a sequel of Dante going through purgatory and paradise I loved how this game made one of my favorite epics into a bad ass game about redemption, condemnation and just pure wholesome slaughter of devils
P
I hate it when people refer to hack and slash games as God of War clones. Everything is God of War for these people. Dante's Inferno is a God of War clone, Darksiders is a God of War clone, Castlevania Lords of Shadow is a God of War clone. Why does everything with melee combat have to be compared to God of War? At some point, even Devil May Cry was compared to God of War, though it has since gained its own notoriety.
Fun fact the creator of God of war David Jaffe got drunk at the playboy mansion after winning game of the year and he apperently was ranting about dmc 3 deserved the award since his game was just a shallow rip off of the first game and it used money to make it appealing, style over substance basically
Also dmc 3 is a major mechanical upgrade over 1 so when compared to the god of war games it is vastly superior as far as game depth is concerned
Unfortunately that's just the world we live in. Inspiration and similarities and people will say clone.
I loved this game when it came out. But the greatest thing it did for me was make me seek out the poem itself.
Poem and series is incredible
I almost forgot this game existed, I’ll definitely have to check it out
I recommend it mate, games a good time and you can get the game for $5 to $10 usually!
Oh it's incredibly smooth and fun to play!
@@MayorHairBear I was seriously amazed when I started playing it! I am playing Nier: Automata now, and Nier is a good game, not gonna question that, but seriously, controlling and fighting with Dante feels so much better..
Did you play on emulator, ps3 or 360?
@@Grunklemire ps3
The game has nothing to do with the poem really except for maybe a couple references
Worked for DMCs Dante
I never thought the Christian mythology had very many interesting stories but I feel like Dante was a really good storyteller.
The interesting thing about Dante's description of Christianity and Hell is he takes so much from so many mythology's to almost create his own thing which is really interesting.
@@MayorHairBearDante actually wanted to show how christianity was censoring all knowledge of past cultures as sinful and damned.
That's why when you read the Divine Comedy you can actually tell a lot of small details:
Amazing.
Isn't it fantastic 😂
This and Banjo are the first two games that come to my mind when people ask about sequels that should have been made. Great vid as always man!
Oh games that should have had sequels is a great topic and I agree, this game comes to mind instantly! Thank you so much mate, stoked you enjoyed the video!
Now we need to find a way to combine Banjo-Kazooie with Dante's Inferno. It would be a sequel to surpass Metal Gear.
Very well said and couldn't have said it better myself!
I remember being so good at this game because it was so addicting learning new combos and memorizing them. And the story was amazing to me.
man I loved this game on my first playthrough even more so now. plus knowing who the concept artist is gives me inspiration when doing sketches. I recommend trying Castlevania Lords of Shadow trilogy (I,II, and Mirror of Fate) since the story it tells is right up your alley.
The Lords of Shadow series is actually one of the next retrospectives, the community also recommended I revisit those games 🙏
The movie is really underrated!
Ain't no sunshine when she's gooooone, it's not warm when she's awaaaaaaay....
The UK version of this game has isaac clarke as a dlc skin
This is one of my favorite games of that console era. Criminally underrated.
I loved this game. I made a whole new Xbox live account around this game to get all the dlc and picture packs back in the day. Was very disappointed when it didn’t get a sequel
Fighting Lucifer while his dong flops around is just about the only thing I remember from this game
Definitely a moment that... sticks out 😂
I loved this game, i have replayed it at least 5 times
Great job as always my man.. the scenery in this game was very effective and even though the studio who made the game was shut down I wish we had a sequel on this good game.
Thank you so much mate, glad you enjoyed the video! Agreed, Visceral Games did an incredible job at creating Hell and at this point, I'd love to see another studio give this game the remake treatment and then continue on with Purgatory and Paradise!
A little off topic
The movie “As above so below”
Has a real cool hell reference!
When they found the actual entrance to hell it was just a tight little tunnel so they had to get on their knees and then on their bellies to squeeze through!
Once they got in the tunnel they looked at each other and made some quote from Dante’s Inferno
You will enter hell like a serpent on your belly!!
A remake and a sequel...please.
I feel so sad every time I think about this game.
100% 🙌
The fact this game has yet to be given a remaster and the lack of sequels is a Sin fit for the 6th Circle, Heresy.
1000% 😂
It was clearly a discount GOW but it was really fun nonetheless
This was one of my favorite action games from that era. I really loved the atmosphere of the game and I found the combat really enjoyable. Another action game from that era I would recommend is Heavenly Sword which is my personal favorite Ninja Theory game. Unfortunately similarly to Dante's Inferno it got hit with the "GOW clone" label at the time, but I really enjoyed the combat, main character, and Chinese inspired setting.
Legitimately just bought Heavenly Sword the other day on eBay for a potential future video! I used to love that game
Damn nostalgia hitting hard, and I mean I played this game on PSP hard, the story when I was a kid was cool, as an adult I just appreciate how they made each circle and environment feel like the sin it's supposed to represent. Such an underappreciated gem o7
Dante's inferno and GOD are like 2 type of icecream...they bowth are icecream in the end but they have diferent taste
Very true mate 🍦
Not gonna lie that Super Bowl commercial is one of the reasons why I bought the game. It was a cool commercial and I liked the premise of the game and what it was based on but that commercial was badass.
This video but for Marlow Briggs and The Mask of Death, which is an underrated gem
Very underrated game!
Such a great game. It's just too bad it didn't have its opportunity to shine. The graphics still hold up today, especially in the cutscenes.
I started playing it yesterday... already one of my favourites.
One of my all time favorites. I love God of War and I love Dante's Inferno, equally. Can't we all just get along?
Maybe one day mate 😂
Top tier jimmy, one of your best! Thankyou for the history lessons ;)
Thanks mate and you're more than welcome 😂
I just started playing this because it's on Game Pass and I'm really enjoying it. I can't believe I've never heard of this game until now!
I feel like game pass is introducing the game to a lot of new people!
I don't know how they would do a game for Purgatorio but this game was unbelievable!
I have no idea but I believe it could have been really special!
Was so excited for this to come out I must have played through it a dozen times in middle school. I really never got into dmc or other hack slashes one of my all time favs for sure
Was really hoping they were going to make a sequel back in the day
Would've loved to see the sequel get made, so much potential!

truly great video dude! really enjoyed this and it reminded of just how great this game was. It was visually stunning, awesome sound, had great gameplay and a great story. Makes me sad that they never worked on a sequel. Surely it deserves a remaster on current gen consoles
Thank you so much mate, glad you enjoyed the video!
But Yeah Mouse is a funny dude….anyway Chao man. Can’t wait to come back and catch up to whatever content you’ll have dish out by then.

Great vid!
Forgot to tell u i played this game for the first time cause of this video and I absolutely loved it so thank you man!!
No worries at all mate I'm glad you enjoyed yourself!
One of the absolute best experiences was picking up this game randomly I’ve heard of the poem, but once I saw this I was hooked I instantly platinum it then did I bought the DLC. I am a huge fan and I think they need to bring it back.
Thanks for your work on this. I still play Dante's to this day.
43:03 This transition is amazing.
How good was Dead Space 2! The build up for that game is something I still remember to this day
I recently got this game for the PS3 for trophies and as a way too fill my collection. This game was a lot of fun and needs too come back in some way for the modern era
I read Dante's Inferno in high school, and I've been all about ever since. I bought the game on PS3 when it came out. I even paid for the special edition. I even bought the animated movie
The animated movie was quality!
The marketing is truly the most impressive. I wish more established IPS’s received as much physical media/content/treasures as Dante’s Inferno. One can only hope.
It was a crazy marketing campaign and I don't think it all hit but you don't see stuff like that anymore which is a massive shame!
Good times as a kid.. i loved that you find Pilot in hell, that stuck with me. Reminds me of Clive Barker’s Jericho too
When it came out I had pre order with the Dante action figure . Was greatly detailed
I remember seeing those, that's awesome!
This man bouta take up 40 mins of my life with a game that's a walking metal album?
Yeah sure fukkit why not.
You know it fam!
I actually found a almost perfect quality disc of Dantes Inferno 360 copy . Now I just need a way to play 360 games again
You gotta love Xbox's backwards compatibility, played my original 360 disc on my xbox one for this video!
Bouth it on ebay the other day for 2 bucks. Excited to finally play it, I've always wanted to but never got around to it
What a steal! Enjoy it mate, it's a good time 🤙
would have liked to see a sequel, but idk how well they could have done it with purgatory and heaven
one of the main points is that the higher you go, the less suffering and violence exists
I think a sequel is possible and you're right the further you go should equal less violence but they messed with the source material enough once it could have worked I think, at least in purgatory
This game deserves a remake 100%, such a masterpiece back in the days.
A remake, remaster I'll take anything at this point to try and get Dante's 2 and 3!
Currently playing through for the first time. I get more Darksider vibes than God of War but still a great game in its own right. Would recommend
Still now these days im playing this game time to time such an underrated game I love every piece of it...❤
Was short and later game quality dropped but it was a great game
Played this when I was like 12 13 and I fell in love with this world
I was surprised that EA and Visceral got away with the genitalia in the game, primarily the lust circle. I loved playing this game.
It's wild isn't it 😂
Great video, a real trip down memory lane.
I thought that the gameplay was similar to GoW but as you said it is a solid hack and slash game and it got unfairly hammered for being too similar.
It's a shame people can't look past imitation sometimes!
this game made me read the iterations of Dante Alighieri, which made me realize how i suck at english
Lords of Shadow 1 and 2 are the only Castlevania games I've actually ever played and from memory I'm inclined to agree, I loved them back in the day!
@@MayorHairBear If you'll ever have enough time, you should try them again, at least first one.
Like with Dante's Inferno its a bit too limited with weapons, has a fixed camera and qte issues, but the atmosphere, solid core gameplay, and good story makes up for it's shortcomings.
@@user-ManofStyle1 I might chuck a poll up in the next couple of days with a few more hack and slasher types because I'm having a lot of fun with the genre at the moment and I do want to revisit series like Lords of Shadow and Darksiders. Maybe even finally play Bayonetta
