Yesugei repeatedly attempted to convince Arvida to become a member of the Vth Legion, since the Thousand Sons were now considered Excommunicate Traitoris.
He even went so far as to commission his Legion's artificers to create a hybrid pauldron, incorporating the iconography of both Legions, to replace the one of Arvida's that had been severely damaged during the fighting against the Death Guard.
    Yesugei is such a bro

‘I do not doubt your visions,’ the Khan said, quietly. ‘But what do they change? Shall we stare up at the shadows and let our blades fall from our hands?'
'Know this, son of Magnus. There is more under the arch of heaven than victory and defeat. We may fall back, but not forever. We may feint and we may weave, but not forever. We may yet be doomed to lose all we cherish, but we shall do so in the knowledge that we could have turned away, and did not.’
‘We remained true,’ the Khan said. ‘They can never have this, not if they burn all we ever built and scorn us through the dancing flames. You hear me? We remained true.’

one of the great failings of the emperor was his tendency to treat his sons like glorified servitors rather than thinking, feeling beings. I like the theory that in making the primarchs he had given away so much of himself that he could no longer fully understand them let alone ordinary people.

  • @lazylazymule

As a Son of the Khagan, thank you for this. This story - the Scars treatment of Arvida is one of the big reasons I follow them. It is one of the Legion's proudest moments.
When Russ and his butchers escorted the wounded V Legion to Terra, they placed patrols and heavily armed squads on Scars ships. Yet the V Legion kept them away fron the section where Arvida was contained, leading to many tense armed confrontations as the Wolves tried to figure out what Jaghatai was hiding from them. But the Warhawk would have fought the Wolves to the last man rather than give them Arvida.

Also the Scars treatment and respect for Ilya Ravallion. She is a brilliant logistician and basically molded the Legion into an effective military force. Being the one to deal with all the political and logistical problems any Legion needs. They basically protected and respected her only second to their Primarch. They had a damn veteran Captain as basically a chauffer/bodyguard for her.

Arvida is proof that the tutelaries weren't all chaos daemons. Warp entities, sure, but not all evil.
My theory has always been that they are shards of each Thousand Sons' own souls made sentient and manifest in the Warp. Their inner daemons, perhaps, which is why the TS get betrayed by them when they become too angry, too prideful, too aggressive.
This also creates a bit of beautiful rhyming poetry with Magnus, who also is forever missing a piece of his soul, which is also an independently sentient entity.
Finally: The Crimson King shows us that when a mortal entity that has absorbed a shard of Magnus dies, the shard is released. We know the Grey Knights on Titan have a secret prisoner that none ever are to speak of. My theory? After Janus died, the Magnus shard loyal to the Emperor was released... And has been kept on Titan ever since.

Here's a thought. Maybe warn Gulliman, the Lion, Rogal, Leman and Sanguinius? Like if there was some kind ward or blockage through the warp. Use other means through the materium by warning people who aren't under such wards and whom you know fully to be loyal.

While Russ was certainly loyal, I wouldn’t call him the most loyal. Personally I would say that the Lion was more loyal. Russ wasn’t trusted enough to be given the massive dark age arsenal that the Lion was which, let’s not forget, included things like men of iron and weapons that would eradicate your very soul. Yes he was secretive, but was never disloyal to the emperor. While Russ went and fought Horus and wounded him with the Emperor’s spear, his goal of killing him failed because he hesitated at the last second. Something the Lion would never have done. In the end, we must remember: while Russ was indeed the emperor’s executioner, the Lion was the emperor’s exterminator.

Russ was sent for 2 reasons:
      1. It's Russ' job to basically be the proverbial sword of Damocles which hangs over the heads of the other primarchs. He's an enforcer.
      2. Russ and the Space Wolves are the most psychically resistant of all the legions. Russ himself has near Sister of Silence level resistance to warp shenanigans.
