Hey guys I grew up in Boston but am originally from the Azores and have relatives in Porto. My uncle was a doctor who owned a clinic there in Porto for over 50 years til he passed away a couple of years ago. . His name was Jose Eduardo De Vargas. his daughter Susanna my cousin is also a doctor in Porto as is her husband and son. If yiu ask around you might be able to meet up with Suzanna or her mother my aunt Olga. She’s a character and would be a great person to interview since she is a native of Porto and knows everything and everyone in that city. Btw I am impressed with how well you guys pronounce Portuguese names etc. you really try and it shows . My best to yiu guys and your beautiful little girl.

Hey Frank G., thank you for sharing. Sorry to hear about your uncle's passing. We're definitely working on our pronunciation, but we know it's not perfect and we'll continue to make mistakes both on and off camera. 😅 We do really appreciate the moral support. We are trying. 😁 Our best to you as well. Thanks for the compliment to Cia. - Josh & Kalie

@@ExpatsEverywhere Josh when you pronounced Sao Joao de Baptista exactly right, I wanted to give you a medal LOL....,most non-Portuguese speakers find the nasal sounds difficult and when you have that many vowels together forget about it but you nailed it. You also nailed the S in Baptista which sounds like a soft J. Overall very impressed. Kalie does great too. One minor correction for Kalie (not to criticize but to encourage) , the word jardim ((garden)) is pronounced Zhar ding. Soft J plus 'im" which is prounced like "ing" anytime you have an "im" at the end of a word it's pronounced "ing". I've been watching all your neighborhood videos with my mom who is 89 and we're really enjoying them. I also find them helpful. When I moved to a different city 5 years ago I had my own criteria for what I was wanting eg close to downtown, shops, food, transportation, etc. I live the burbs of Boston and as you guys know the US is mostly built for cars whereas Europe is more pedestrian friendly (in general) but I was still able to find something that accomodated my needs. Some of it was subconscious even and when i watch you guys give ratings to each neighborhood based on what you're needs and likes are it makes sense. Btw no worries about mispronouncing any words going forward, not judgments here, just the fact that you're trying is what matters. Peace and Love.

@@Frankygoestohull1 This is so great! Thanks for the encouragement. We were just having this conversation today while walking around Faro. Kalie is Cuban American and defaults to Spanish in terms of pronunciation when she doesn't know how to say things. We used the name Jose as in Mourinho to discuss the J sound. 😂 We're both ex-soccer players and huge fans of the game.
That's so cool that your 89 year old mother has been watching our episodes. 🥰 We love to hear that. We're really trying to temper our own wants and expectation while delivering the meat and potatoes of the content, but the ratings are biased 😂. Peace and Love to you too, kind sir! I am really appreciating your takes on the various neighborhoods in Porto, however I'm a bit disappointed that you don't cross the bridge into
Vila Nova da Gaia at least as far as the metro station Santo Ovidio on Avenida da Republica. The area around the river and port on the Gaia side is all still part of the metro Porto area and just as easy to get to (and hard to get out of for the same reasons as the Porto side). There are many apartments and houses available (for less) on the Gaia side. My husband and I were so fortunate to find an apartment right on the Avenida between the first two metro stops
that has been perfect for us. We are right above a cafe on the Avenida side but about four stories above the street on the back side of the building where our apt is located. We have a fabulous view of the Douro river all the way to the Arrabida bridge. The apartment is about 900 sq ft, has two balconies (small but big enough to have a small table and 2 chairs) and an air shaft that is accessible only to us. It was completely gutted and remodeled prior to our buying it, and has ductless ac and heat and we have found it to be very economical. Like many apartment buildings in Porto, it's an old building with no elevators. We must walk up 1 flight (2 landings) to the first floor. We are both in our 70's and can do this, but one flight was my limit when considering what to buy. The exceptional views, the quality of the renovation, the metro just outside our front door, the easy access to Porto... all contributed to our decision.
Also, El Cortes Inglis is on the Gaia side. Its a Spanish department store thats a big deal here. It has everything you'd expect from a big department store plus a gourmet grocery store, auto rental, travel agency, food court.... which we can walk or metro to. There's a lot to see on this side as well, apart from the river

Completely agree with your take on Riberia. As an Aussie, I kinda feel the same way about inner-city Sydney: a feast for the eyes, great for people watching and maybe shopping but I wouldn't want to live there. I found myself transitting through Ribeira to other places both times I've been in Porto but not staying there. And definitely agree the food scene is pretty much geared to tourists. But you still have to see Ribeira. It's heart-in-your-mouth beautiful and the streets around the Jewish quarter in particular are fascinating.

That's a very good description of Ribeira. It's a pity that the panel "Alminhas da Ponte" was not visible in your video, it was completely in shade... Also there's a story behind it, that's a homage to the hundreds that died when fleeing Napoleon's troops through a bridge made of boats tied together. The bridge gave in and hundreds died. There's also a very beautiful tile panel outside the Ribeira tunnel.

Another great video. Shout out to young couples with a baby, they will walk by themselves in one year, and after 4 or 5 carry their own stuff, so don't adjust too much around baby strollers and diaper bags, that phase goes away quickly. When teenagers, they won't even want to go out with parents.
Ribeira was the place to go out in the 90's, and now it is even more so but it became too expensive for the students, so the demographics shifted a lot. Younger people hangs out more at Galerias and Cordoaria. I truly enjoy going there every once in a while.
