I Review JAMES MAY'S PUB - THE FIRST TIME!

- One of my subscribers recently emailed me and recommended visiting James May's pub in Swallowcliffe. I didn't know he had a pub but after doing a bit of research, I stumbled upon the Royal Oak. After already reviewing Clarkson's farm, I thought it would be a good idea to compare their burgers and see which one came out on top!

As an American, I look forward to the day when I can visit the UK. However, the more of Gary's videos I watch, the more days I will have to schedule for my visit. There's so many establishments worthy of giving it a go, to paraphrase our culinary guide. Gary's enthusiasm for good meals is contagious. It would be an honor to share a meal with Gary, especially a full breakfast. I think I could convince him to give me his mushrooms ...
Me too! I'd take some mushrooms too!
Be careful about the U.K. They got toys that make a lot of noise over here and the gangs are deadly.
And have some 🌶️ on his behalf 🥵🥵🥵
Mushrooms are the best, I'd have them any day.
@@snapdragon1194 👍💪😋🤣😅
Well done to James for saving our heritage and making it a place worth visiting and a great review Gary
Agreed David. Have a lovely Christmas!
£18 burger hahaha what a hero
But its like a badly decorated 80s two bed?????
A really nicely presented burger. The perfect sort of pub that if you lived nearby, you could wander in for a nice meal and a few drinks to while away a leisurely relaxing Sunday afternoon.
Indeed!!
Aha!
Gary, your eating videos really help me make it. Going thru radiation treatments, I am not eating. But watching you with the enthusiasm you show, I feel like I just ate. I really look forward to your reviews everyday after treatment, can't wait to see Gary Eats London. Thank you very much.
Hi Dennis. Sorry to hear that and wishing you all the best mate. Thank you, it means a lot. Have a brilliant Xmas.
Keep on eating!!!
All the best, you're gonna power through this stuff. Keep your head high, even if life is trying to push it down. You got this.
Hope youre doing well :) You got this!
I went to this pub last year in the summer, with a friend and 3 dogs.
We ate in the beer garden, which was lovely, and really enjoyed the food.
The menu was very different. We had kimchi fritters which were superb, and both had different seafood dishes. It was pricy, but my friend ended up ordering 3 starters as she enjoyed them so much.
It’s buried in the country, but worth the drive if you want a real treat.
It's superb. I can imagine it's wonderful in the summer. Thank you and have a brilliant Xmas!
I bet it’s bleeding dear at that prat’s pub
Just subscribed to your channel and I love your reviews, honest and factual thanks 👍
What a charming,' traditional' pub..so glad it was saved by James May!...I too would opt for a sesame bun over brioche - and chunky chips over 'fries' ...I have just hit the 'subscribe' for your channel Gary, and wish you and the camera man a Happy Christmas and many more food reviews in the coming year!
Indeed. Have a great Christmas Wendy!
Your unpretentious joy at visiting so many eateries is a real pleasure to behold! Keep it up. I'll be watching.
Thank you my friend. Hope you had a wonderful Christmas!
£17 and only one piece of bacon is criminal, you’re very kind for a “food critic” all being said great videos
I don’t like the tag “food critic”. It was Christmas, I was in a good mood 😄
Gary, you are just great! I discovered your channel a few weeks ago and I’m so pleased I did. You have a great way of combining getting to the point and telling us what we want to hear about, while also showing us your fabulous personality. Have a brilliant Christmas and I cannot wait for more videos!
You're very kind. Have a great Christmas!
We stayed at the Royal Oak just a couple of months ago. You are right about the food quality and ambience, both excellent. The chef is very good, well done to them. The beer is pretty good too! The accommodation needs a refurb, or at the very least a good clean. I would return for a meal but wouldn’t stay over. I should add every member of staff was friendly, polite and helpful which is always a plus.
Brilliant place!
Usual clear, fair and balanced review but for an old guy like me you can keep your poncy brioche bun! Give me sesame or something similar every time. Even a french stick is better than a brioche.
Happy Christmas to you and yours Gary you're the clear lead food reviewer on UK TH-cam at the moment but don't bust a gut, Take it steady. The best things come in small helpings.
I’m with you on that, I hate a brioche bun
I also prefer a sesame bun. Thank you my friend, that means a lot. Have a lovely Christmas!
Brioche buns are everywhere too making them so hard to avoid. YUK !
You geriatrics have lost your taste buds!! Brioche all the way
I recently discovered this channel and love it. It isn’t mad crazy editing or intense music. I much prefer this sort of tone. Bit sad they only gave you one piece of bacon. That feels a little bit frugal. However all looked delicious. Have a great Christmas Gary and co and look forward to whatever content the new year has in store.
Thank you my friend. Need a bit more bacon. Thank you and have a brilliant Xmas!
Hi Gary, a great revue. I have eaten twice at the Royal Oak and have sampled the fish and chips and the sliced gammon, both of which were excellent. I also had a cappuccino and a dessert along with a pint of ale. My colleague was so impressed that he booked a table for another occasion. As you say well worth a visit.
Great to hear you enjoy it as well Peter. Thank you and have a brilliant Xmas!
I was really impressed by the interior of the pub, nice and clean, plenty of space and no overbearing music. The burger looked really delicious, I was getting the old salivation going, the chips looked really nice and well cooked for my taste, I hate overcooked food, the fries didn’t look too bad at all. Thanks for another great review Gary. 😀👍🇬🇧🏴🇺🇦🇮🇱
P.S I don’t agree about the price, £17.50 for a burger and fries, that is definitely not in my price bracket, I would say that around the £9.00-£10.00 would be more reasonable, but if that is what people can afford to pay then good luck to them, it’s their money and they can spend it any way they want, doesn’t change the fact that it looked really yummy and I just can’t afford the price.
A completely fair way of looking at it Allan. Have a lovely Christmas!
Where are you being served a burger and chips for 9 quid? Get real.
Hi Gary, So glad to see that you've been to The Royal Oak, I never thought you'd venture into a local area to me, such a treat. My entire family met up there last Christmas for an afternoon gathering in the same room you ate in, it was needed for the amount of family there. It is such a lovely pub and the staff were so accommodating and friendly to us all for our meetup. It's well worth a visit for anyone visiting the area and Gary, you should definitely go back again. Merry Christmas.
It's a wonderful pub. Staff were lovely as well. Have a great Christmas!
What a lovely looking country pub and the burger looked delicious 😋👍🏻.
Happy Christmas Gary and Mr camera man.🎄
Did you see the behind the scenes video? He is now a skeleton as never gets feed!
After the recent 'chain' establishment poor review, it was great to get back to an independent outlet. What a difference! Yes, please. A full meal review from this venue, please. It was a great review, as always. Thank you for taking us along. To you and your family, cameraman, and his family, a happy Christmas.
Have a wonderful Christmas Margaret :)
I thought the other customers sounded decidedly on the raucous side. I never want to hear every detail of some yahoo’s life. Gary is obviously too nice to comment on the loudness of his fellow customers . Brioche buns are far too sweet for a savoury course .
That burger looks extremely tasty!! Putting gherkins on is definitely a winner.
It really is! Happy Christmas!!
@@GaryEats happy Christmas Gary, keep up the good work!!
Urrrrgh! They are the invention of the DEVIL!
❤ Mr May’s pup looks absolutely beautiful. I’m a fan already as the sign , near front for welcome’s you plus your four legged companion. You have won my heart ❤️ already Mr May. The interior is so sophisticated BUT welcoming & cosy & very clean. The food look very appetising. Love Australia 🇦🇺. ✌️🕊️
Thank you very much for your wonderful comment, Kristine 🇦🇺🇦🇺
It's all about what's trendy. For a while over here in New England, Pretzel roll buns were pushed everywhere. Now it seems Hawaiian rolls/sweet buns are getting the big push. I personally love a nice kaiser bun with poppy seeds or sesame seeds .
I like a french baguette with poppy seeds. Always hated pretzel buns. For burgers i like just a nice fresh white sesame bap.
Spot on Alexandria. Have a lovely Christmas!
@GaryEats Merry Christmas Gary & Cameraman 🎁
Great review Gary . And bravo to James for saving a local icon . So many great pubs have closed.
I would definitely pay ...17.50 for that, ..and I would .....but James May still owes me a stapler !
It's a long story ...He knows what he did ....
That sounds absolutely shocking, Philip LOL
Always enjoy your reviews Gary. Honest, well documented and detailed comments. Keep up the good work!
That’s really appreciated Richard thank you
That looked an exceptional tasty burger and a very nice pub. Mr May you got it right an undoubted 10 from me.
Good stuff Colin. Have a great Christmas!
@@GaryEats and a merry Christmas to you.
Another great video. Decor looked amazing and lovely Christmas tree. Have to say the burger and the chips looked quality. Keep up the great work Gary and all the best for Christmas and have an excellent 2024 👍🎉👍
Thank you Andrew. It's a wonderful pub - have a lovely Christmas!
Gary your brilliant videos have got me through covid the last few weeks. I have been really poorly but you have cheered me up and helped me to get my appetite back by watching all the delicious meals you vlog! Have a wonderful Christmas and looking forward to watching you in the New Year 🎄 ❤ and thanks from Hilary
I hope you're feeling a little better now Hilary. Have a great Christmas!
Hope you enjoy a few big burgers this year Hilary! 🍔
Great review and fair, full review would definitely be appreciated. Merry Christmas Gary and to the cameraman too🎄🎅🏼🎉
I will do that at some point in the summer. Have a lovely Christmas!
I stayed there before he bought it. (American here.) It was absolutely wonderful already. We stayed there for nearly a week. We got to see a local woman walking her dog and a lamb. Set the mood.
I'm going again very soon to do the whole menu
Great when I come across a new channel, plenty of content to binge on, great quality videos, just a normal guy trying food all over the place, A brilliant watch.
That is very kind to say thank you very much
Merry Christmas Gary and Camera Man! Your channel is one of the gems I've discovered this year. Looking forward to seeing more from you soon!
Thank you so much. Have a great Christmas!
The entire production of this video gives off such a comfy, heartfelt vibe. I really like it! It's refreshing compared to a lot of fast-paced, overly-stimulating TH-cam videos these days. Kudos to you, good sir! Subscribed!! Greetings from the Caribbean
Thank you. I'm jealous of you in the Carribean.
This pub looks very cosy & welcoming and the burger is top of the tree along with the delicious hand cut chips. It gets five Ho, Ho, Ho, Ho ,Ho's from me ! Merry Christmas Gary - have a lovely day & looking forward to more great videos once you've recovered from Christmas day lunch ! Another visit to the Royal Oak would be most welcomed !
Thank you Robert and have a brilliant Xmas!
That Burger looked fantastic to me, and I love the small menu. I prefer it to an extensive menu
Same here Ray. Have a great Christmas!
What a lovely place and the food looked fantastic for the price, Gary! Hope you and the camera man have a wonderful Christmas!🌲🎅⭐️
Have a lovely Christmas, Sheila!
17.50 for burger and fries is crazy price. Only one rasher of streaky bacon as well. Did look nice though albeit a bit dry.
Hi Gary and Mr Cameraman, great vlog as always.
I must admit im not a Brioche person i do love a good old sesame seed bun.
This looked a really good burger but i did find the price at £17-50p a little bit naughty, i do hate it when the price is high due to the person who owns the place, rather than the 10 out of 10 quality of the food.
Hope you both have an amazing Christmas and so looking forward to some more great reviews in 2024.
Chris.
I know what your saying but in todays world the price is probably spot on.
Indeed Chris. A little bit pricy and if it wasn't Christmas, I'd probably have been a bit more frustrated with.
With that being said, have an amazing Christmas yourself and all the best to you and your family.
What annoys me more is the 'service charge'. Either include all your charges in the price or tell customers you're asking them to top up the staff wages.
For that price, I wouldn't be quibbling about whether the bun is brioche or sesame, I'd be insisting that it's served to me by Elizabeth Hurley in her birthday suit! Merry Christmas Gary and the camera man. You're both doing a great job.
Agree - I think burgers make a lot of money for pubs!
Lol. Have a lovely Christmas!
Knowing my luck I would get served by James May in his birthday suit.
Totally agree with this comment about price, it's absolutely bonkers how we managed to get to a place where circa £20 is "normal" for a burger and fries. I'm lucky enough to be able to afford these prices, but it still bewilders me.
Ha ha was just thinking thats a good price for a away from home.... pre cooked (1/4 pounder) Burger and Chips
Shanghai 8am Christmas morning , As a Brit in China a couple of decades now never really been home sick in all that time, until you brought that pup to the screen, memories of similar pups in Dorset, thanks for sharing.
More than welcome Karl. Hope you're doing well in China.
The grub looked great! I'd have preferred the proper chips too over the fries. Merry Christmas to you, Gary and not forgetting the Cameraman. 🎅🏻🎄☃🎉
Happy Christmas to you my friend. Hope you enjoy your Christmas pudding!
British country pubs are part of our heritage and with local support and visitors, they'll survive the current economic crisis for future generations to enjoy
Spot on David 👍🏼
Hope everyone has a great Christmas and a happy New Year 🎊 🎆
LOL, that old chestnut.
Happy Christmas!!
Im a man who struggles to eat ,but you videos make me want to eat so thanks gary keep em coming
Hope you're ok Gareth. Thanks mate, means a lot!
Lovely pub and a nice, seasonal menu. Thought the burger looked a bit dry compared to the Diddly burger personally, and I'm on the fence with Brioche. It works well with smaller patties but all too often dissolves before you've finished. Still, thanks again Gary and Merry Christmas!
Fair enough. Have a lovely Christmas!
Hi, Gary. Thanks for keeping my ol' Dad entertained and happy in the past year, pal - I really appreciate it and so does he. Merry Christmas from Si (me) and my Dad (Michael)
👍
Hi Si and Michael. Much appreciated and I'm happy you're liking the videos. Have a lovely Christmas!
What does Jeremy Clarkson and Amy Winehouse have in common?
They both used to be on top gear.
What do you want for Christmas? Darkness.
@@britpackdog4545 Rehab with my Jokes LOL
Thought I got there Gary, then found another load, so here I go again. Thank you both. 😋😋🤗🤗
Thank you as always ❤️
A brioche bun really doesn't go with a burger in my opinion, but it's all down to personal choice in the end, another quality review, cheers Gary, and merry Christmas. 🎄💯💥
Thanks Christian. Have a lovely Christmas! 🎅🏼🎄
I agree brioche buns are too sponge like and sweet for burgers I think.
I completely agree, But not just burgers! I really don't like them for anything savoury. They are a sweet treat to me, Toasted with butter as breakfast or with jam/cream/choc spread as a sweet snack, Or at best as bread and butter pudding with custard YUM! Brioche just does not sit right at all as a sandwich or burger IMO.
@@helenHTID definitely, sweet and savoury should be kept miles apart, it's either one or the other. 👍💯🥳🎄💥🍻
You were very busy last few days Gary. Thank you for everything and Happy Christmas!
Thank you my friend. Have a great Xmas!
I agree regarding the bun. A brioche bun is trendy, but the sweetness doesn't always compliment the dish overall. A good quality toasted sesame seed bun is much better, in my opinion. Merry Christmas. 🎅
I totally agree. Have a lovely Christmas!
There's nothing better than a rural pub with a roaring fire on a cold day! The food looked great too. Agree on brioche - too rich given it already has a fatty burger, bacon and cheese.
Thanks for the video. And Merry Christmas!
Thank you and have a brilliant Xmas!
Burger looked decent, another rasher was needed, and maybe a few Jalapeños….Merry Christmas to you both!!
There are few things in life that wouldn't benefit from extra bacon and added jalapeños.
Have a lovely Christmas Danny. The Ivy is the next upload!
@@GaryEats Looking forward to that one. Assuming you haven't already done the review, I recommend you order their shephard's pie. It's their sig. dish, apparently..

Thank you for the years work with your videos, very much appreciated. 👍🏾 Season's greetings and all the best for 2024 from Birmingham
Thank you John. I'll be back in Birmingham in the New Year!

Sadly, pubs are disappearing at a great rate throughout the country. I was out for a drive around the Fylde countryside a couple of months ago, and three pubs, one of which was a regular drinking spot for us in our younger days, were all derelict and possibly due for demolition. I was quite sad about it. The cost of drinks etc and the horrendous tax on everything, has put paid to people being able to go out for lunch, or just to have a drink. It's only going to get worse to be honest.
Very sad to hear after being in the industry for so long.
Not much tax on food. Alcohol taxes came in at 1918 to help pay for the new welfare state
Its heartbreaking how many pubs are closing. Bellends are more interested in buying a cup of coffee
Its no longer legal to go anywhere in a motorised vehicle and have a drink.
@user-oe1mb9hu9i There are plenty of alcohol free beers and soft drinks to have. That's not an issue. I've not had an alcoholic drink since last new year, ( my wife is on a transplant list, which means we could get a call at any time day or night, so I won't risk it), but I'm have a wee tipple tonight! It shouldn't be a reason not to go to the pub, but it is expensive. Saying that, fish and chips are now a rare treat as the cost has risen exponentially!
Beautiful pub, lovely burger and chips. A win, win all the way. Merry Christmas.
Indeed. Have a great Christmas!
Hope his meals are better than his driving.
Lol Marie.
😂❤
Thanks for bringing us this video gary wot a lovely pub in the country food looked really nice have a lovely Christmas
Glad you enjoyed it Julie. Have a great Christmas!
Hello again Gary. Mate; I have to agree with you that James May’s pub runs circles around DIDDLEY SQUAT but *£17.50* for a burger made my eyes water and the tassels on my sporran wither. That equates to $32.50 in Aussie dollars. That earlier price chart you showed when walking into the pub depicting the cost of a 1000 gram steak for £80.00 and that 1400 gram steak for a hundred quid, sent me into shock. Surely that must be for a whole truck load of cattle. Then again, we breed the finest beef in Scotland. Hey, those cattle are named after me, *ANGUS.* Don;’t I get any royalties? Love the pub though Gary. Surely it runs ring around Clarkesons joint. I’d give it an 8 out of 10 for theburger and minus a MILLION for the cost of the “beast."
Lol no problem Angus. Thank you and have a brilliant Xmas!
Love the Christmas sweater. And nice to see that local pubs survive; even if it takes a celebrity to become the owner so they have a local spot for a drink.
I agree with you completely and thank you very much
Top Gear again?? Noooooooooooooooooooo.......that programme should have been cancelled 15 years ago for having the most annoying, contrived idiots on TV!
Lol, no more Top Gear reviews after this!
Agree😂❤
I swore to myself I would not watch utube videos over the next few days but when I saw your video pop up I couldn’t resist.
Lovely looking burger. Cameraman’s chips looked better. Diddlys weather was cold outside so I prefer James May’s place.
Happy Christmas to you both , and stop putting out new content for a couple of days so I can concentrate on the Christmas. 😂😂😂 👍
Haha Philip. I really appreciate you tuning in and I hope you have an amazing Christmas. Thank you.
Merry Christmas dear Gary!!! Thank you for all the cool vids this year!!! God Bless!!!
Happy Christmas, Ricky. All the best!!
Great videos, Gary. I love how you don't beat around the bush. Showed your channel to a mate and he likes your style as well.
Thank you mate. Have a wonderful Christmas
Hi Gary. Great revue. Went here a year ago and thought it was superb. We have friends near Shaftesbury who took us and it's a great pub. Even thought about moving there as it's such a nice village, but we live a few hundred miles north. Keep on revueing
Thanks for watching!
(462) What a PRETTY pub!!! At least you were not stuck sitting outside in the cold like you were at Mr. Clarkson's establishment. And brioche buns are rather more of a fad, in my opinion. Thank you SO much for the review today; hope you, your kith and kin have a WONDERFUL Christmas and Boxing Day!!!
Indeed. Have a great Christmas!
Great review Gary, you seen like a lovely bloke and I'm sure that why me and a lot of others watch you. I'm sure if Clarkson or May watched this they would have you round for a chat and a complementary meal. Hope you have a nice Christmas.
Thanks for that, very kind of you. Have a lovely Christmas!
Beautiful looking pub and the burger looks lovely, another honest review 😋

The pub looks great, food too. Would love to see a full 3 course review in the future, Merry Christmas to you and your cameraman.

@@GaryEats thank you Gary
Ooh, you've got me excited about this place! The menu is just up my street and they do accommodation which is very reasonable. Thinking about a weekend stay in the spring. I am quite new to burgers, having avoiding them over the years. Don't know why, homemade ones are delicious. I quite like the brioche buns, but I think the traditional buns are more dense. I don't know why restaurants serve up different chips. A local restaurant to me serves up chunky chips with fish, but if you have a burger or steak, fries come with it. Keep up the good work. Happy New Year!
Fantastic to hear Tracey, give it a go. Happy New Year!
Yes a full meal review would be good. The burger looked tasty.
Happy Christmas to you and the cameraman from Tasmania.
Have a lovely Christmas Anne!

Hi Gary,
Firstly a great Christmas to you also.
Have to admit, I get very envious watching these burger reviews. I was unfortunate enough to get a tic bit a few years ago while walking the dogs and since that have been allergic to beef. Watching all of these great burger reviews makes me so sad at what I am unable to do.
That being said, I enjoy watching every one! Keep eating those burgers for me. Each one is a happy memory of ones I have eaten in the past. My favourite was at a place called Dormy House in West Runton, Norfolk.
Once again Merry Christmas to your and yours, and I look forward to seeing more of you in the New Year.
Adie
Hope you had a wonderful Christmas. I'm sorry to hear that Adie, I hope you're okay and wishing you all the best.
Thanks Gary for another cracking review. Food and premises look great. Merry Christmas from Gloucestershire!

Cheeky Gary pinching Mr Cameraman's chips, I hope you left him at least one!! Cheered me up watching your video today as I'm not well - got the dreaded lurgy - and Chirpy's not well either, so it was a nice bonus to see your review. Burger looked nice and tasty, I would prefer a sesame bun though, as I think brioche is maybe too sweet? Congratulations on how well your channel has grown, looking forward to seeing where you go next year. All the best from Tania and Chirpy 🎄🐦
He was able to have a few Tania, haha. Have a lovely Christmas!
Merry Christmas Gary, and cameraman! Btw, that sweater was the icing on the cake! You totally crushed it! 😂

It's become one of my challenges to guess what rating you will give. I go by what you say and your expressions. I thought, I bet Gary gives this an 8/10! You're the best!
Haha!! Yes, brilliant. Thank you and have a brilliant Xmas!
Merry Christmas Gary & Cameraman. Always great videography and commentary. I would definitely return for the Saddle of Venison its description sounds amazing.

James is a real blokey bloke and knows his pubs , I’ve been there and he’s got it bang on imo .
Great stuff!
Just to say, great work as always Gary and loving the Christmas jumper, all the best!
Thank you Dave!! Have a great Christmas!
This looked cosy and welcoming and the decor very appropriate for such an old traditional pub. I could see the ambience was good. I thought the burger looked appetising too, though, like you and others I'd much rather a traditional burger bun, brioche dough is over-sweet for me with any savoury dish. But I wasn't surprised you said it tasted good! Please do return for a full review. I'd be extra interested as this pub isn't a long drive from me. I think your score was fair, and to be honest there are plenty of establishments now which charge that amount for burgers and fries. Loving the Christmas jumper! A belated Happy Christmas, and early good wishes for 2024!
Thanks for watching, have a great 2024!
Thankyou for taking the time to make this festive review ( cracking Xmas jumper by the way) . It's such a busy time watch it crossing the road mate. Costly food but real quality. Gorgeous pub. Merry Christmas Gary.x
Thank you Paul. Glad you like the jumper - have a wonderful Xmas mate.
