Welcome to a SAFE comments section! I know this is the internet and all, but I have some rather old-fashioned beliefs about treating other humans with RESPECT, and therefore I will delete any unkind comments. Thanks so much for your thoughtful and courteous participation - I look forward to hearing from you!

    1. 51st State
    2. Dwellings of Eldervale
    3. Earth
    4. Grande Austria Hotel
    5. Sea Salt & Paper
1-4 are all in my top 10 games of all time.

Oh wow, it looks like 2023 was a great gaming year for you! I haven't played any of those, but 2-5 have very much been on my radar in recent months (and I even purchased Sea Salt & Paper for a Christmas gift exchange!). I know a few of those games are available to play on BoardGameArena, so perhaps I'll get a chance to try them out there at some point. Thanks so much for taking the time to share your favourite games of last year!

I mean, it's almost entirely thanks to you that I had such a great gaming year last year, so thank YOU, too! :)

Thanks for sharing your gaming year with us.
I'd say that my favorite games for 2023 were Test of Honour, Rising Sun and Septima.
The first one is an historical wargame about feudal Japan in which I keep losing to my sun; the second is an old but beloved also feudal Japan themed game, though not historical at all, and the last one a lovely boardgame about witches covens, witches hunters, and trials.

My girl and I have really enjoyed playing Cthulhu: Death May Die. By BGG standards, it's a 10/10 for both of us. We played it 30 times from Oct 2022 through Feb 2024. It's very challenging and encourages adapting strategies to many variables.

Your comment prompted me to look it up - looks like a fun game to explore over multiple sessions with 1 or 2 other gaming friends. Its designers certainly have some of the best pedigree in the business! (I also like how the game's description says "You start the game insane"... I'm way ahead of you, CMON!!)

I loved hearing all your stats on this Josh! Brass is a game I’ve been very curious about. Spirit Island is on my list as well.

Awesome! Those are both very complex games to get into, but I found it very much worth the effort in the case of Spirit Island. As for Brass, most "serious" board game hobbyists seem to think very highly of the game, but it's just a bit too much on the heavier end for my personal tastes. (When I invest the time and mental energy into a challenging game, I tend to prefer richer thematic immersion over a drier "mechanism"-driven experience.)
